Data on body weight and morphometric traits from one hundred and fifty-eight (158) live African cat fish sampled from two locations around Okitipupa within Ondo State, Nigeria was subjected to simple statistics analysis, Pearson’s correlation and analysis of variance to test for the effect of sex, age, location and body size on the body weight and the morphometric traits. The coefficient of variation (CV) varied among the parameters were considered. Results obtained revealed that body weight had the highest value (46.18%) in the adult fish while it was 22.76% in juvenile fish. Insignificant effect of sex (p > 0.05) was observed in both adult and juvenile fish in all the parameters considered. Age had a very highly significant effect (p < 0.0001) on all the parameters considered. The adult had higher values compared to the juvenile in body weight and the morphometric traits. Effect of body size was significant (P < 0.0001) on body weight and morphometric traits, the estimates increased from small size to medium to big size. Significant effect (P < 0.0001) of location was observed only on body weight, total length, standard length and head length. The fish from farm A had higher values compared to farm B. The correlation coefficients among the traits for juvenile and adult fish ranged between low to high and were significant (P < 0.05, P < 0.01 and P < 0.0001). Morphometric traits can be used in characterizing African catfish based on age and body size.

Opis:
Catfish (Pangasius sp.) is a freshwater fish commodity that is processed into filet. The development of the catfish fillet industry has generated a lot of waste. One of the uses is making surimi, but not all surimi produced is of high quality. Surimi is an intermediate product that has undergone a process of washing, pressing, and freezing. Surimi with low quality can be improved as raw material for making edible films. Edible film is a thin layer made of material that is safe for consumption and biodegradable. This research aims to determine the best concentration of glycerol as a plasticizer in the catfish surimi protein edible film and to determine the characteristics of the edible film produced. The method that was used in this research is the experimental method with Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three treatments and three repeats of addition glycerol plasticizer concentrations are 0.6%, 0.8%, and 1.0%. The parameters observed were thickness, tensile strength, elongation, transparency, and solubility. The resulting data were analyzed using ANOVA and continued with the Duncan test (α = 5%). The results showed that edible film with the addition of 1.0% glycerol plasticizer concentration has the best characteristics based on Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) and statistic analysis with a thickness of 0.068 mm, tensile strength of 402.02 kgf / cm2, elongation of 33.3%, clarity of 98.06% and transparency of 1.94.

Opis:
As far as the detection of metal genotoxicity in fish is concerned, micronucleus (MN) test is considered an extremely suitable measure. In this study, frequencies of micronucleated erythrocytes were scored in peripheral blood of catfish, Heteropneustes fossilis (bloch) after acute in-vivo exposure of zinc at different concentrations (5, 10 and 30 ppm) in the laboratory condition. These three concentrations of zinc were tested at different durations such as 24h, 48h, 72h and 96h respectively. Highly significant (P < 0.001) increased values were obtained for MN frequencies in the peripheral erythrocytes of exposed fishes compared to control groups of fishes. These results confirm that dose- and time-dependent micronucleation in the peripheral erythrocytes of fish after short-term exposure to zinc could provide valuable information regarding zinc containing effluent quality and also help in genetic biomonitoring with this test model. In this context safe concentration of zinc vis-a-vis genotoxicity range could be evaluated for future studies.

Opis:
The study examined the effect of catfish production on smallholder farmers’ welfare in Osun State, Nigeria using the Odo-Otin Local Government Area of Osun State as a case study. A purposive sampling technique was used in selecting 109 farmers and a structured questionnaire was used to collect data. Descriptive statistics, gross margin analysis and a multiple regression model were used to analyse data. Results show that the majority (67.9%) of the catfish farmers were male, married (64.2%), with s mean age of 44 years (±13.1), and more than three-quarters (78.9%) had tertiary education. The majority of the catfish farmers (85.3%) raised fish to table size (grow-out) and 55.0% used static renewal technology. The average gross margin of ₦172,246 ($545) per production season (5–6 months) and BCR of 1.66 indicate that catfish farming is profitable and feasible. Regression results indicate that cost of feed and quantity of catfish harvested significantly increase the quantity of catfish sold, and quantities of catfish harvested and sold significantly increase food expenditure by farmers. Therefore, farm inputs (especially feed) should be subsidised by governments to encourage effective use of inputs to increase catfish production and subsequently, the welfare of farmers. Also, effort should be intensified at building the capacity of the farmers through education so as to enhance the adoption of technology which would invariably translate to better yields and income.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to analyze and assess the possibility of using a two-stage filtration system with ceramic membranes: a 3-tube module with 1.0 kDa cut-off (1st stage) and a one-tube module with 0.45 kDa cut-off (2nd stage) for treating effluent water from a juvenile African catfish aquaculture. The study revealed that during the 1st filtration stage of the effluent water, the highest degrees of retention were obtained with respect to: suspended solids SS (rejection coefficient RI=100%), turbidity (RI=99.40%), total iron (RI=89.20%), BOD5 (RI=76.0%), nitrite nitrogen (RI=62.30%), and CODCr (RI=41.74%). The 2nd filtration stage resulted in a lower reduction degree of the tested indicators in comparison to the 1st filtration stage. At the 2nd stage, the highest values of the rejection coefficient were noted in for the total iron content (RIV=100%), CODCr (RIV=59.52%; RV=64.28%, RVI=63.49%) and turbidity (RIV and RV = 45.0%, RVI=50.0%). The obtained results indicate that ceramic membranes (with 1.0 and 0.45 kDa cut-offs) may be used in recirculation aquaculture systems as one of the stages of effluent water treatment.
Celem pracy była analiza i ocena możliwości wykorzystania dwustopniowego systemu filtrowania z zastosowaniem membran ceramicznych w postaci modułu 3 rurowego o granicznej rozdzielczości membrany (z ang. cut-off) wynoszącej 1.0 kDa (I stopień) i modułu jednorurowego o granicznej rozdzielczości membrany wynoszącej 0.45 kDa (II stopień), do procesu oczyszczania wód poprodukcyjnych pochodzących z hodowli narybku suma afrykańskiego. Podczas I stopnia procesu filtracji wody poprodukcyjnej badania wykazały, że w najwyższym stopniu zatrzymywane były: zawiesina ogólna SS – RI= 100,0%, mętność RI=99.40%, zawartość żelaza ogólnego RI=89.20%, BZT5 RI=76.0%, oraz azot azotynowy RI=62.30% i ChZTCr RI=41.74%. II stopień procesu filtracji powodował mniejszy stopień redukcji wartości badanych wskaźników niż I stopień procesu filtracji. Wówczas najwyższy współczynnik retencji odnotowano w przypadku zawartości żelaza ogólnego RIV=100%, CODCr RIV=59.52%; RV=64.28%, RVI=63.49% i mętności RIV i RV= 45.0%, RVI=50.0%.

The manufacturing of Catfish products has been developed rapidly in the Mekong delta. Every year, about 1.2 million tons of Catfish and 150,000 tons of biofuel are produced. The biofuel B100 manufactures in Mekong delta satisfies the America standard ASTM D6751; EURO EN 14214 or Vietnamese standard TCVN 7717. Mekong delta, a lower land area, has a large inland water way system with around 100.000 river boats that operate with marine diesel engine. Using the biofuel for the marine diesel engine in area will reduce the HC, CO, SOx and NOx emission to the environment. Therefore, with a study on applying the catfish biofuel, it will reduce the climate change by the increasing of sea water level and save energy by using green energy to replace petrol oil.

Lactoferrin (LF) is a glycoprotein found in milk, neutrophil granules, secretions and selected organs of mammals. Lactoferrin exhibits antibacterial, antiviral, fungicidal, immunoregulatory and other functions. Although fish are devoid of this protein and its cell receptors, LF effect on the immune mechanisms of fish has been demonstrated. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of bovine lactoferrin, applied in vitro, on the activity of head kidney and spleen leukocytes in three freshwater fish species: rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), European eel (Anguilla anguilla) and weis catfish (Silurus glanis). The obtained results validate LF beneficial effect on the respiratory burst of phagocytes in rainbow trout and weis catfish despite the fact that the potential killing activity against Aeromonas hydrophila was not stimulated in any of the studied species. Bovine lactoferrin enhanced the proliferation of T-lymphocytes in rainbow trout and European eel, as well as of B-lymphocytes in rainbow trout.

Opis:
This research aims to determine the shelf life of catfish skin crackers in polypropylene plastic packaging using the ASLT method. This test was conducted in the Fisheries Product Processing Laboratory of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Padjadjaran University and testing the content of water content and TBA (Thiobarbituric Acid) of catfish skin crackers at the Food Technology Laboratory, Faculty of Food Science Technology, Padjadjaran University from September to November 2018. This study used an experimental method consisting of 3 storage temperature treatments at 25 ºC, 35 ºC and 45 ºC. Observations carried out include sensory (hedonic) test, water content test, and TBA (Thiobarbituric Acid) test. For the calculation, Arrhenius model was chosen with odor as a critical parameter to determine the shelf life which had the biggest R2 value with equation Arrhenius Ln K = 1079.8 (1/T) – 5.5161, with R2 value equal to 0.9212. The shelf life of catfish skin crackers that was saved at the room temperature (25 ºC) was 39 days or 1.3 month.
