Opis:
Salt licks play an important role in the health of wildlife by supplying the essential minerals required especially for herbivores. This study assessed nine mineral salt lick sites, fauna utilization and tree species diversity in response to threats encountered at the site. Systematic random sampling, quadrat sampling and transect survey were used as the methodological indices to carry out the research. The dominant tree species is Anogeissus leiocarpus while recessive species was Vitellaria paradoxa. Fauna distribution and abundance within and across mineral salt lick sites were observed. Kobs (Kobus kob) were highest while Tantalus monkey (Chlorocebus tantalus) and Warthog (Phacochoerus aethiopicus) had least encounter rate. Park management should implement conservation education, stringent policies against wildlife offences and constant surveillance to conserve biodiversity in protected ecological site. The overall benefits derived from salt licks for wildlife health, majorly through herbivores are crucial in maintaining a healthy wildlife community for their reproduction and survival.

Opis:
Forest cover in the hill regions is essential to maintain environmental, economic and ecological balances. North Bengal accounts for 3,086 sq km (26 %) of the 11,876 sq km area of classified forests in the state, and for nearly 5,000 sq km (40 %) of all land under tree cover. Khumani is a Village (26.84o N, 88.60o E) in Gorubathan Block in Darjeeling District of West Bengal State, India. The survey work was done in December, 2014 by visiting the Khumani Forest Village (established in 1949) of upper Kumai and the primary data were gathered through field survey and direct contact with common people and authorized centers of the region. Surveys on the demography, agriculture, livestock management, water management, education, culture, health, waste management, disaster management, transport, biodiversity, human animal conflict were done in this area. Topographic map of the area was prepared by using the database of National Atlas and Thematic Mapping Organization (NATMO), Kolkata office. In every phase of the survey work, pictorial documentation was done. In spite of being positioned in a diverse and sensitive ecological zone, the village is not adequately managed. There is an urgent need for implementing sustainable management systems in the areas for the betterment of the socio-environmental structures. Some of the possible management strategies have been suggested for maintaining the social, environmental, economic and ecological balance of the region. Proper funds should be raised to conserve and manage these ecologically important zones of north Bengal, which should be one of the main focuses of future researches.

Hanrijhama is a medium size village in district East Midnapore of West Bengal, India and popularly known for its agriculture and its year ending folk-festival Gajon and Charak. The male-female ratio is higher than the average of the state. This village has a very high rate of literacy than the average rate of the state also. There is ample facility for education starting from pre-primary to high school education with two ICDS schools, one primary school and one higher-secondary school. However, for higher education, the villagers have to depend on the colleges located within its block and sub-divisional area. Agriculture is the main source of economy of the village. Although paddy is the main agricultural crop, but various vegetables are also cultivated by large amount to earn livestock of the villagers. The soil is also favourable for production of variety of crops. The village is rich with floral diversity with different species of plants. Although there are large wet land area and central canal for supplying water for cultivation but it is not sufficient. So huge water is harvested from the ground through deep tube well that is not favourable for sustainable development. So proper agricultural planning is required for sustainable environmental development. The year ending folk festival plays an important role in the economy of the village.

Opis:
Managed boreal pine forests are subject to regular clear cuts causing significant disturbances to these ecosystems. It is believed that, to some extent, they resemble natural cycles of forest growth, decline, and regeneration and can benefit, e.g., mutualistic relations among plants and pollinators. To study the impact of forest management (clear cuts) on pollinator visitation, we focused on three ericaceous plant species, Vaccinium myrtillus, V. vitis-idaea, and Calluna vulgaris, common elements of pine forest understory. Our observations, conducted in Lithuania, showed that there are no differences among control mature stands and clear cut areas in terms of visitation frequency for all three studied species. However, at least for C. vulgaris, a shift toward fly visits was observed in the clear cut site, showing that open areas are preferred habitats for these insects. Ants constituted an important share of visitors to flowers of V. myrtillus and C. vulgaris, suggesting their important role in reproduction of these plant species.
Gospodarcze drzewostany sosnowe strefy borealnej są obiektem częstych zabiegów leśnych, m.in. zrębów zupełnych, powodujących znaczące zaburzenia w tych ekosystemach.

Village Common Forests
Bandarban district
Bangladesh
Opis:
Village Common Forests (VCF) are used sustainably for water source conservation, livelihoods and other biomass needs ofethnic communities in the hilly areas of Bangladesh. The current forest degradation rate warrants the importance and potentiality of VCF for sustainable natural resources management. This study was conducted in two VCF of Lama and RumaUpazila at Chimbuk hill range in Bandarban district to explore the indigenous management techniques and tree species diversity. To identify tree species diversity, eighteen plots (9 plots from each VCF) were selected at different hill position (top, middle and bottom) by stratified random sampling method with the dimension of 20m×20m per plot. Shiner-winner and Simpson index were used to calculate the tree species diversity. According to the analyses, it was found that diversity was higher in top of the hill, but species density (stem/ha) was higher in the valley. It was also found that 23000 seedlings/ha regenerated naturally and among the 31 identified families, Moraceae was dominant where the density was 354 stems/ha with basal area 52.63 m2/ha. The dominant species were Schleicher oleosaand Anisopterascaphula and important non-timber species were Melocannabaccifera and Calamusgurubagrowing abundantly in the study areas. It was observed that the VCF were managed by ethnic Mro community with two different committees (customary and executive) who made some rules for natural forest conservation. This management practice is not only conserving hill forests, but also helping to improve degraded forest and create new habitats for biodiversity in the study area.

Amphibia is a class of vertebrate. Amphibians are ectothermic, or cold-blooded, and they have smooth skin that must stay moist to prevent desiccation. They play an important role in nature both, as predator and prey. Nagaland is one of the north eastern hilly states and it is very rich in biodiversity. Due to the geographical position, Nagaland has a huge number of amphibian fauna. Purpose of the present study is to get information of sociocultural relation of frog and Naga people and to study the diversity. Study was conducted through the market survey and interview. Interview was conducted among the people of different age groups which are belonging to different tribes. Frog species were collected from the markets and Morphometric measurements were taken by using a vernier caliper. Frog samples were kept as museum specimen. From the investigation, all together 11 species from 4 families were recorded from the market and identified with the help of relevant literature. Cooking procedure of frog meat among the people of Nagaland varies from tribe to tribe and people to people. Most common method of consumption is boiling with bamboo shoot. Naga people have traditional believe that frogs have medicinal purposes. Different body parts of the frog are consumed by different way to cure the various diseases. Frog eating is a traditional way and continued practice among the Naga society from the time of civilization to obtain the protein, and frogs are easily available in the markets in both, as fresh and dried. Frogs are being exploited from nature from year after year without having proper maintenance and conservation. The results of the study revealed that there is no reduction in frog population, though they are being collected in a huge number. It is necessary to culture the frog species and to establish socio-ecological system through a sustainable management and conservation of biodiversity.

The purpose of the research was to assess the species composition and biodiversity indices for xylophagous beetles collected by window traps in the parts of Gomilshanski lisy National Nature Park with different management regimes and anthropogenic load. Four window traps were placed in each of the five groups of sample plots: clear felling, selective felling, stationary recreation, regulated recreation and protected zone. The data were analysed using the statistical software package PAST, particularly, the Menhinick index (DMn) and dominance index (D) were evaluated and classical clustering (unweighted pair-group average [UPGMA]) was performed. A total of 42 species of xylophages (9903 individuals) were collected from Curculionidae (Scolytinae and Cossoninae), Cerambycidae, Histeridae, Bostrichidae, Buprestidae and Lymexilidae. The highest species richness was in the plots of clear and selective felling (25 and 22 species, respectively) and the lowest was in the protected zone (16 species), regulated recreation (19 species) and stationary recreation (22 species). The Menhinick index (DMn) was the lowest in the protected zone (0.27), increased in the zone of regulated recreation (0.43) and stationary recreation (0.45) and was maximal in the plots of selective and clear felling (0.69 and 0.77, respectively). The number of individuals was maximal in the protected zone and minimal at the plots of selective and clear felling. All sites were dominated by Xyleborinus saxesenii (Ratzeburg, 1837) (66–85% individuals) and Anisandrus dispar (Fabricius, 1792) (8.5–20.7% individuals). Minimal dominance (0.49) was found in the plot of clear felling. Cluster analysis showed similarity of the xylophage complex in the plots of clear and selective felling, as well as in the zone of stationary and regulated recreation, which differed from the protected zone.

The Forest of Upper Alibori is subject to strong agricultural and pastoral pressures from year to year despite the implementation of a forest management plan. It is therefore appropriate to conduct an integrated and spatialized analysis of the effects of these pressures on plant biodiversity from a spatial planning perspective. The research objective is to establish a multi-criteria zoning of the Upper Alibori Forest Reserve that can reconcile biodiversity conservation and sustainable agropastoral exploitation. A methodological approach based on geomatics was adopted. Hierarchical multi-criteria analysis and cross-layer analysis are the main techniques adopted. The state of plant biodiversity, one of the important criteria for multi-criteria zoning. The intersection of the scientific zoning and the zoning proposed by the riparian population shows a similarity of 54%. In the central core, the similarity between the two types of zoning is 32%. Spatially, this similarity is observed along the Alibori River. At the level of the agricultural series, the two zonings show a similarity level of 23%. The elaboration of an integrated zoning made it possible to distinguish several management series. The management series delimited are made up of the central core (32%), the protection series (11%), the production series (17%), the scientific research series (2%), the service series (2%) and the agropastoral and reforestation series (36%). The implementation of such zoning is the responsibility of the forest administration.
