Opis:
Baltic integration studies, though dispersed and involving researchers of various disciplines, generally fit well in the field of economic geography research. This article attempts to review the study results of research conducted in Poland in the last four decades. It identifies eleven leading issues, including: the Baltic wide cooperation (conditions and factors, progress and collaboration perspectives), the development of the maritime economy, international legislation, environmental protection, spatial planning and cross-border cooperation. The research focus evolved reflecting the major milestones in geopolitical transformations. In Baltic Europe we can identify three evolutionary phases: identification of cooperation paths and conditions in the competitive environment of two political and military blocks, a recast of options in the period of political transformation and European integration, studies of EU enlargement consequences.

Opis:
The Polish part of the Baltic region is located within the contact zone between two large geological units: the Precambrian platform and the Paleozoic platform. It comprises the Polish sector of the southern Baltic Sea and the adjacent onshore part of Northern Poland (Western and Eastern Pomerania). The fundamental geological pattern is defined by the Teisseyre-Tornquist Zone, separating the East European Craton from the Paleozoic platform. As a result of exploration activity in the onshore Pomerania region, four oil fields in Cambrian sandstones, seven gas fields in Carboniferous sandstones, six gas fields in Rotliegend sandstones, and eleven oil fields within the Zechstein Main Dolomite horizon have been discovered. The petroleum play of the southern Baltic Sea region and adjacent areas must be considered separately for Eastern and Western Pomerania. In the Peribaltic Syneclise we can only take into consideration organic matter appearing in lower Paleozoic rocks but their geothermal history refers to the period from the Vendian up to the recent. The present extent of the "oil window" in the Upper Cambrian rocks is mainly restricted to the offshore area. Reservoir properties of the "gas window" Cambrian rocks are rather low due to intensive diagenetic processes. Acquisition of gas should be possible by processes of hydraulic stimulation (tight gas). Lower Paleozoic rocks rich in organic matter (Ordovician and Silurian), especially in the border zone of the EEC (Ro >>gt; 1.3%), could be an area of unconventional gas fields (shale gas). The Western Pomerania petroleum play shows two separate source rocks units. The older one embraces Carboniferous deposits with organic matter of terrestrial origin and generated gases accumulated in the Rotliegend and Carboniferous traps. The second petroleum system is located within the carbonates of the Zechstein Main Dolomite (Ca2). This is a closed system, meaning that the source rocks are at the same time the reservoirs sealed by Zechstein evaporates. Hitherto discovered hydrocarbon deposits in the Polish part of the Baltic region have confirmed good perspectives regarding oil and gas hydrocarbon zones. New, conventional and unconventional discoveries remain possible.

The National Security Strategy of the Russian Federation to 2020 sets the national interests of the country and strategic national priorities, which could affect strategy for the military security of Baltic States. This paper will argue that the threat to the military security of Baltic States has considerably increased since their restoration of independence because the Russian army reforms in recent years have increased the military capabilities near the Baltic States borders and military operations and other military activities have risen around the Baltic region, which have decreased the environment of the security on the entire area. The aim of this paper is to identify the Russian military threats and to analyse their implications to the concepts of the military security of Baltic States, which based on territorial defence and to make further recommendations based on research findings and analysis.

Opis:
2-D modelling of hydrocarbon generation, expulsion, migration and accumulation processes was carried out for the four (Middle Cambrian, Upper Cambrian-Tremadocian, Caradocian and Llandovery) source rock horizons. The petroleum potential of these source rocks is different, the highest being observed in the Upper Cambrian-Tremadocian horizon and the lowest in the Middle Cambrian one. The maturity of organic matter within these source units increases from the north-east to the south-west of the Polish part of Baltic region. The petroleum generation from these source rocks was highest in the Darlowo and Slupsk blocks as well as in the onshore part of the Leba Block. Expulsion took place mainly from the Upper Cambrian-Tremadocian source rocks and these rocks sourced almost all hydrocarbons accumulated within the Middle Cambrian sandstone reservoirs. Migration of hydrocarbons proceeded along fault zones. Almost all petroleum processes in the study area took place between the end of the Pridoli and the end of the Carboniferous. Moreover, during the Permian and the Mesozoic, part of the hydrocarbons remigrated within the reservoir. This process changed the setting and the volume of hydrocarbon accumulations. It was caused by the tectonic rebuilding of the basin and, in most cases, it led to the modification of accumulation range or to the dispersion of hydrocarbons.

The balance of power in the world is fluctuating as the US is facing new competitors as the People’s Republic of China being as rising power. So, if tensions between the US and China or another near-peer will grow, the US would need to dedicate significant resources to the face new threat. Such a shift of power could affect the balance of power in other regions of the world and it could even trigger Russian opportunism in its former Soviet satellites. There could be a risk that NATO’s current military structure in the Baltic States leaves its Eastern flank exposed to potential risks. The paper argues that additional initiatives such as easing the flow of Allied forces across borders, the establishment of NATO anti-access/ area denial (A2AD) measures and efforts towards political cohesion need to be added and done so in a manner to gain maximum benefits from their combined effects.

Opis:
XVI –wieczna Kronika Królestwa duńskiego, autorstwa Arilda Huitfeldta powstała na marginesie starań państwa o stworzenie nowoczesnej syntezy dziejów narodowych, mającej do spełnienia różnorakie polityczne cele, w odniesieniu do zagranicznego i krajowego odbiorcy. 9-tomowe dzieło omawia dzieje Danii od legendarnego króla Dana do roku 1559 (śmierć Chrystiana III). Napisane w języku narodowym, ma dość tradycyjną formę, bliską rocznikowi i kronice. Pozostaje historią pragmatyczną, realizującą polityczne, dydaktyczne i moralizatorskie cele. Narracja bardziej rozbudowana pojawia się w odniesieniu do nowszych dziejów, w przypadku m. in. wojny trzynastoletniej.
The enormous 16th century book Chronicle of the Kingdom of Denmark, written in vernacu- lar, is a testament to several features typical of that period’s historiography. As a utilitarian history it was supposed to deliver moral and political lessons and arguments. It has a tra- ditional form, in many parts annalistic. Despite several weaknesses, the work became very popular reading for generations of Danish nobility, influencing the development of histori- cal consciousness. The Chronicle is also evidence of broadening the horizons of Danish elites, a group to which the author, the Chancellor of the Realm and the magnate, belonged. The paper presents information concerning Poland, included in the book. The fact that it was so could be simply a result of historical methods applied in this period (among others, copying and repeating sources), but it could be caused also by growing interests in Poland, seen as a partner in regional politics with the Baltic Sea as the centre. Some closer connections be- tween Poland and Denmark, mainly in the 15th and the 16th centuries, could be connected with the network of conflicts and alliances among such political entities as: the Teutonic Order, the Holy Empire, Brandenburg, the Hanseatic League, Gdańsk and the whole of Po- merania. Most of the notes are scattered, rather short and do not create a comprehensive whole. In the case of more recent history, the narrative has a much more well-developed character (like for instance the case of the Thirteen Years’ War). Some Polish context (prob- ably fictitious) became useful when the author had to criticise King Christian II. Huitfeldt was also well-informed about the political system of the Commonwealth and included the information when writing about the Danish system, presenting both as similar.

The expected influence of variability in atmospheric aerosol profiles on retrievals of aerosol optical thickness (AOT) from NOAA AVHRR measurements is analysed. In particular, the bias in the AOT retrieval due to the assumption of a climatological aerosol profile in the retrieval algorithm is studied. The bias is defined as the difference between AOT retrieved with an algorithm using a climatological aerosol profile, and the actual AOT employed in the calculations of radiances at the top of the atmosphere (TOA). The TOA radiances are simulated by means of the MODTRAN code for different aerosol profiles. Atmospheric conditions and solar and satellite angles used in the bias simulations are typical of the Baltic region. In the simulations, the maximum absolute value of the bias amounts to nearly 40% in channel 2 and 14% in channel 1 of AVHRR.

The quantity, genetic type and maturity of organic matter dispersed in the Lower Cambrian to the uppermost part of the Silurian (Pridoli) sequence of the Polish part of the Baltic region was determined based on the results of geochemical analyses of a total of 1377 rock samples collected from 38 onshore and offshore boreholes. The best source rocks were found in the Upper Cambrian-Tremadocian succession where present and initial total organic carbon (TOC) contents are up to ca. 18 and 20 wt.%, respectively. Caradocian (Ordovician) strata can be considered as an additional source of hydrocarbons. In the individual boreholes median present and initial TOC contents vary from 0.5 to 3.3 wt.% and from 1 to 6 wt.%, respectively. The Llandovery (Silurian) strata reveal moderate and locally high hydrocarbon potential of the source rocks. The present TOC content reaches locally 10 wt.% (usually 1-2 wt.%). Another source of hydrocarbons can be clayey intercalations within the Middle Cambrian strata. Their organic matter content rarely exceeds 1 wt.%, being often a result of advanced organic matter transformation. In all lower Paleozoic strata investigated from the Polish part of the Baltic region oil-prone, low-sulphur Type-II kerogen occurs, deposited in anoxic or sub-oxic conditions. The maturity of all source rocks changes from the initial phase of the low-temperature thermogenic processes in the northeastern part to the overmature stage in the southwestern part of the study area.

Opis:
In January 1939, the first issue of the Italian magazine “Geopolitica” came out: it would go on monthly until 1942. Founded in the scientific circles of Trieste by two geographers, Giorgio Roletto (1885–1967) and Ernesto Massi (1909–1997), who went on to become editor and co-editor-in-chief, respectively, the magazine was inspired by the German periodical “Zeitschrift für Geopolitik” by Karl Haushofer. However, its approach to geopolitical issues used autonomous conceptional bases quite different from those of the German school. In the intentions of its founders, “Geopolitica” should have contributed to a re-evaluation of didactics of geography and to support the imperialistic politics of Mussolini’s regime, even though it never got to have a substantial role in Italy’s governing policies. It never even obtained full recognition by the academic geographical establishment that in fact denied geopolitics its own scientific autonomy. Frequent issues discussed in the magazine were the Mediterranean basin, the Balkans and Africa, close to the Italian geostrategic interests; but there was also cautious interest towards Poland, considered to be fully integrated into the German Lebensraum. Therefore, we could say there was some reticence in approaching this theme, along with a sort of reverence towards the German ally who was also “competition”, despite the fact that its territory saw strategic and political events of utmost importance during the entire four years of the magazine’s life. On the other hand, the attention towards the Baltic region was free of any conditioning. It was perceived as a sort of a “Nordic Mediterranean”, wanted both by Germans and Soviets, and an object of desire also of the states who wanted to defend their difficult neutrality in the war that was raging throughout Europe.
W styczniu 1939 roku ukazał się pierwszy numer włoskiego magazynu „Geopolitica”, który wydawany był co miesiąc do 1942 roku. Założony został w środowisku naukowym Triestu przez dwóch geografów – Giorgio Roletto (1885–1967) i Ernesto Massiego (1909–1997), którzy zostali odpowiednio redaktorem naczelnym i współredaktorem.

Opis:
The burial history and thermal evolution of the western part of the Baltic region was reconstructed by means of 1-D modelling for eight boreholes penetrating the lower Paleozoic succession. The Neoproterozoic rifting presumably caused elevation of heat flow, while Cambrian to Mid Ordovician post-rift thermal sag of the Baltica passive margin led to systematic decrease of heat flow with time. Development of the Late Ordovician to Silurian flexural foredeep of the Caledonide collision zone was associated with intensive subsidence, a high rate of sediment deposition and rapid burial of the Upper Cambrian and/or Tremadocian, Upper Ordovician and lower Silurian source rocks, presumably sufficient for the early stage of oil generation. After post-Caledonian Early Devonian uplift, the western Baltic region was subject to Early Devonian to early Carboniferous subsidence and deposition, leading to further burial of the source rocks. Together with elevated heat flow, characteristic of the Variscan broad foreland, this caused further source rocks maturation and hydrocarbon generation. Late- to post-Variscan uplift and erosion (late Carboniferous to late Permian) resulted in complete removal of the Middle Devonian to lower Carboniferous strata and development of the major regional unconformity. During late Permian to Cretaceous time the western part of the Baltic region constituted an eastern flank of the Polish Trough, with the main phases of subsidence and burial during late Permian-Early Triassic time, related to rifting in the Polish Trough, and during Late Cretaceous time, related to the compressional regime. Maturity profiles in boreholes from the vicinity of the studied boreholes indicate the presence of a late Mesozoic (Late Cretaceous?) positive thermal event, causing further maturation of the source rock.

Epeiric seas covered the east and west parts of the old craton of Baltica in the Silurian and brachiopods formed a major part of the benthic macrofauna throughout Silurian times (Llandovery to Pridoli). The orders Strophomenida and Orthotetida are conspicuous components of the brachiopod fauna, and thus the genera and species of the superfamilies Plectambonitoidea, Strophomenoidea, and Chilidiopsoidea, which occur in the Silurian of Baltica are reviewed and reidentified in turn, and their individual distributions are assessed within the numerous boreholes of the East Baltic, particularly Lithuania, and attributed to benthic assemblages. The commonest plectambonitoids are Eoplectodonta (Eoplectodonta) (6 species), Leangella (2 species), and Jonesea (2 species); rarer forms include Aegiria and Eoplectodonta (Ygerodiscus), for which the new species E. (Y.) bella is erected from the Lithuanian Wenlock. Eight strophomenoid families occur; the rare Leptaenoideidae only in Gotland (Leptaenoidea, Liljevallia). Strophomenidae are represented by Katastrophomena (4 species), and Pentlandina (2 species); Bellimurina (Cyphomenoidea) is only from Oslo and Gotland. Rafinesquinidae include widespread Leptaena (at least 11 species) and Lepidoleptaena (2 species) with Scamnomena and Crassitestella known only from Gotland and Oslo. In the Amphistrophiidae Amphistrophia is widespread, and Eoamphistrophia, Eocymostrophia, and Mesodouvillina are rare. In the Leptostrophiidae Mesoleptostrophia, Brachyprion, and Protomegastrophia are common, but Eomegastrophia, Eostropheodonta, Erinostrophia, and Palaeoleptostrophia are only recorded from the west in the Baltica Silurian. In the Eopholidostrophidae, Mesopholidostrophia is common and Eopholidostrophia rare, and within the Shaleriidae the genus Shaleria is revised and found to be the only genus within the family Shaleriidae and to contain three subgenera, S. (Shaleria), S. (Shaleriella) and S. (Janiomya). In the Strophonellidae Strophonella was widespread and Eostrophonella rare. Within the Orthotetoidea, Coolinia and Morinorhynchus(with the new Ludlow and Pridoli species M. rubeli from the Lithuanian boreholes erected) are common, and Fardenia, Saughina, and Valdaria again only known from the west Baltic. Most of the genera and many of the speciesreviewed were very widespread and many found in the adjacent Avalonia and Laurentia: a few were even more cosmopolitan.

Opis:
For lithostratigraphic successions of the lower Paleozoic strata in the Polish part of the Baltic Sea between the Slupsk Block and Courland Block, assessment of petrophysical properties was carried out with the use of mercury porosimetry and well logging results. The porosimetric measurements allowed to determine critical rock parameters and to distinguish genetic types of reservoirs. To complete the information on reservoir parameters, available well logs were used. The logs allowed identification of Cambrian strata in boreholes and the distinguishing of several lithostratigraphical units. Results of the porosimetric measurements demonstrated the strongly heterogeneous character of the pore space in the Cambrian rocks, with generally very weak reservoir properties. Fractured and porous-fractured rock space is a principal feature here. Well log anomalies confirmed the diversified lithological development of the Cambrian profile and the somewhat better reservoir parameters of rocks of the Paradoxides paradoxissimus Superzone and the shaly character of the Eccaparadoxides oelandicus Superzone. From the point of view of volumes of potential hydrocarbon accumulations, the capacity of the Cambrian deposits is low, but this is a basic feature of reservoir rocks with fractured and fractured-porous space.
