Opis:
Calcium phosphates (CaPs) are widely used in hard tissue replacement because of their excellent biocompatibility. Calcium phosphate cements (CPCs) are an interesting alternative for sintered calcium phosphate ceramics due to their mouldability and self-setting properties which allow them to conform to even the most complex bone defects. However, one of the major limitations of CPCs is their relatively low resorption rate, not optimal for bone regeneration. The aim of our studies was to combine a stable hydroxyapatite with more soluble α-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) or calcium sulphate (CS) (resorbability: CS>>α-TCP>HA) to develop biomaterial with gradual degradation. Promising materials for use in minimally invasive surgery for bone defects repair were obtained. It was found that the degradation rate of hydroxyapatite based bone substitutes can be controlled by the addition of an appropriate kind and amount of more soluble constituent. The impact of the setting component (α-TCP or CS) on the physicochemical properties of the final products was confirmed. Furthermore the influence of organic additives (chitosan, methylcellulose, alginate) on the final materials characteristic was proven. Solutions of organic additives, applied as the liquid phases, significantly improved the workability of cement pastes. It has been demonstrated that implant materials based on calcium sulphate and α-TCP differed in their setting times, mechanical strength, dissolution rate and morphologies of apatite layers on their surfaces after soaking in simulated body fluid. The reason of observed differences is a higher susceptibility of calcium sulphate to both disintegration and degradation.

Opis:
Besides high-temperature calcium phosphates (CaPs), low-temperature calcium phosphate bone cements (CPCs), due to excellent biological properties: bioactivity, biocompability and osteoconductivity, are successfully used as bone substitutes. However, some disadvantages, related mainly to their low resorption rate and poor mechanical properties result in limited range of applications of these implant materials to non-loaded places in the skeletal system. To overcome this problem, magnesium phosphate cements (MPCs) with high strength have been considered as biomaterials. The main disadvantage of MPCs is that the acid-base setting reaction is an exothermic process that must be strictly controlled to avoid tissue necrosis. In this work, a new composite bone substitute (Hydroxyapatite Magnesium Phosphate Material – HMPM) based on hydroxyapatite (HA) and magnesium phosphate cement (MPC) with sodium pyrophosphate applied as a retardant of setting reaction was obtained. Its setting time was adequate for clinical applications. Combining properties of HA and MPC has made it possible to obtain microporous (showing bimodal pore size distribution in the range of 0.005–1.700 micrometers) potential implant material showing good surgical handiness and sufficient mechanical strength. Effectiveness of sodium pyrophosphate as a retardant of exothermic setting reaction of the new cement formulation was confirmed. After setting and hardening, the material consisted of hydroxyapatite and struvite as crystalline phases. Unreacted magnesium oxide was not detected.

In vitro chemical stability and bioactivity of three different cement type bone substitutes were determined by incubating cement samples in the simulated body fluid (SBF) for 7 and 28 days. Morphology of sample surfaces has been studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) combined with an energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The diffuse reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS) was applied as a supplementary method. The development of bone-like apatite layers on the surface depended on their initial phase composition. Obtained cements showed good surgical handiness, high bioactive potential and were chemically stable. They seem to be promising materials for bone substitution.

Opis:
Polylactic acid (PLA) offers unique features of biodegradability and thermal processability, that offer potential applications in medicine. PLA can be transformed into fibers by spinning enabling then subsequent fabrication of desirable three dimensional fabrics which may be used as scaffolds for tissue engineering applications. Incorporation of synthetic nano-hydroxyapatite into the fibrous polymer matrix can enhance bioactive properties of the prospective scaffold. In the present work, the method of production of composite fibers based on polylactic acid (PLA) and nano-hydroxyapatite (n-HAp) is proposed. Obtained fibers have shown excellent apatite-forming ability when immersed in simulated body fluid.

Opis:
Zirconium nitride is considered as a promising material for strengthening for surface of various materials, especially those designed for hard tissue surgery. In this study, five groups of materials were prepared: non-modified carbon fibre-reinforced carbon composites (CFRC), CFRC ground with metallographic paper, non-ground CFRC with a layer of ZrN deposited by magnetron sputtering, ground CFRC with a ZrN layer deposited by the arc technique, and ground CFRC with a ZrN layer deposited by a magnetron. We found that all samples gave good support for the adhesion and growth of human-osteoblast-like MG 63 cells, though the cell numbers on these materials were often lower than on standard cell culture polystyrene dishes and microscopic glass coverslips. Nevertheless, ZrN films can be considered as suitable materials for surface modification of bone implants in order to improve their mechanical properties and their integration with the surrounding tissue.

A bill of quantities (BOQ) is an important link in the cost estimation process and construction work planning. The correctness of determining the amount of work in a bill of quantities affects the accuracy of costing of construction works in budget estimates, as well as the quality of work implementation schedules. In the paper the authors point out some problems related to the issue of performing a bill of quantities in Poland. They refer to the applicable ways of taking off under the applicable legal framework and in the light of environmental methods. They draw attention to possible taking off methods. The paper also raises problems of inconsistency of definitions, discrepancies in the available principles of a bill of quantities, including temporary and accompanying works while performing BOQs.

One of the contract awarding systems in public sector in Poland is the Design & Build system. In this system, a client concludes a contract agreement with only one company, a contractor, in order to carry out both design and construction of works. While deciding on this form of delivery of a public project, the client is obliged to conduct a single proceeding aiming to select the contractor. In this paper, public works contracts awarded in the D&B system in Poland are analysed, whilst attention was put on the contracting modes and assessment criteria. The results are assessed against the experience of other countries and recommended methods for selection of the Design and Build contractor.

Opis:
In this paper a mathematical model enabling the analysis of the heat-flow phenomena occurring in the waterwalls of the combustion chambers of the boilers for supercritical parameters is proposed. It is a one-dimensional model with distributed parameters based on the solution of equations describing the conservation laws of mass, momentum, and energy. The purpose of the numerical calculations is to determine the distributions of the fluid enthalpy and the temperature of the waterwall pipes. This temperature should not exceed the calculation temperature for particular category of steel. The derived differential equations are solved using two methods: with the use of the implicit difference scheme, in which the mesh with regular nodes was applied, and using the Runge-Kutta method. The temperature distribution of the waterwall pipes is determined using the CFD. All thermophysical properties of the fluid and waterwall pipes are computed in real-time. The time-spatial heat transfer coefficient distribution is also computed in the on-line mode. The heat calculations for the combustion chamber are carried out with the use of the zone method, thus the thermal load distribution of the waterwalls is known. The time needed for the computations is of great importance when taking into consideration calculations carried out in the on-line mode. A correctly solved one-dimensional model ensures the appropriately short computational time.
