Opis:
The research aims to find an effective way to reduce real-world CO2 emissions of passenger vehicles, by answering the question of what kind of vehicles in various countries generates the smallest carbon footprint. Emissions were calculated for vehicles from three of the most popular segments: small, compact, and midsize, both with conventional body and SUVs. Each type of vehicle was analyzed with various types of powertrain: petrol ICE (internal combustion engine), diesel ICE, LPG ICE, petrol hybrid, LPG hybrid and BEV (battery electric vehicle) with four different carbon intensity of electric energy source. The final conclusion provides guidelines for environmentally responsible decision-making in terms of passenger vehicle choice.

Opis:
The BAT-CELL Bio-Ambient-Tests method is based on the assessment of the influence of the actual toxicity of various types of gas mixtures on living cells, taking into account the additive synergism. Work has been carried out on the application of the BAT-CELL method for testing engine exhaust gases. The application of computational fluid mechanics using Ansys Fluent made it possible to analyse the flow of engine exhaust gases through the aspiration system used, including analysis of shear stress values and their uniformity distribution on the bottom wall of the sampler containing cell culture on the bottom wall of the sampler. The appropriate flow rate of exhaust gases through the aspiration system and the shape of aspiration tubing for the sampler were selected in order to enable uniform contact of gas particles with the cell surface and not to damage them mechanically. The simulation results were verified in real-life tests and confirmed the theoretical assumptions.

Opis:
The paper presents the numerical optimization of an innovative radiator for use in electric buses in terms of energy consumption and noise emission. Computational fluid dynamics simulations were performed. The flow of the cooling medium was modeled using the RANS method. The two-equation k-ɛ turbulence model, the heat transfer model and the acoustic model were used. According to the research results, the separation of the air stream in individual fan sections contributes to the improvement of energy efficiency and reduces noise emissions. As a result of the simulation, it was found that the best solution in terms of noise emission as well as the occurring flow phenomena caused about a 2 dB decrease of maximum values of the noise level and allowed the equalization of the cooling medium velocity (prevailing velocity range between 4 and 9 m/s). The results of the simulations were verified under laboratory and field conditions, showing a very good convergence of the model with the results of the experiments (i.e. the maximum noise level was estimated at 57 dB, under measurement conditions for the same operating point at 59 dB) while maintaining the baseline energy demand, which indicates a new approach in the method of shaping internal elements of electric vehicle coolers.

A small hydro-power plant designing in aspect of current legislation is an interdisciplinary problem because of the fact that efficiency priority is not so important as ecological one. In this article the regulations concerning permissions for plant operation are discussed. The small hydro-power plant designing criteria are presented in the aspect of a plant impact on the river ecosystem.

Opis:
Hydrocarbons, especially aromatic volatile organic compounds (AVOCs) and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), emitted by IC engines, indisputably have a negative impact on the environment and public health. Even though current legislation strongly impacts on their low concentration in the exhausts, not quantity but the quality of those substances determines fumes toxicity. The paper presents results of the researches on a photocatalytic device dedicated to BTX (benzene-toluene-xylene) removal from IC engine exhausts, which can be applied in a vehicle cabin ventilation system. According to the results, the system is able to decrease toxic compounds concentration (caused by mobile emission sources) in inlet-air delivered to the vehicle interior. In effect, the system application reduces the users of a vehicle to exposure on contaminants.
