Opis:
Introduction. Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae have spread rapidly through the countries and continents to become a global concern. One of the main reservoirs of NDM-1 positive strains from the Enterobacteriaceae family is the Indian subcontinent (Bangladesh, Pakistan, India). Materials and method. During June 2017 – June 2018, rectal swab samples were collected routinely in all patients returning to Poland from South and South-East Asia. During molecular examinations gene blaNDM-1 encoding NDM-1 carbapenemase was detected. Results. 31 patients were examined after returning to Poland from a trip to South and South-East Asia. The presence of New Delhi Metallo-β-lactamase-1 producing Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae was confirmed in three patients (9.7%) returning to Poland from travels to India. All the positive patients were hospitalized during the trip in a New Delhi hospital. Conclusions. Digestive tract carriage of NDM in a group of Polish travelers is a significant health and epidemiological problem. The study confirms the necessity for screening for carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE), particularly among travellers. Rectal swabs should be collected in every case of patients returning from international trips, and the possibility of environment-associated infections should be emphasized.

Opis:
A two-year field trial was carried out in order to outline reasons of maize grain yield increase due to foliar application of zinc, and to evaluate its effects on the dynamics of nitrogen and dry matter accumulation in the course of the growing season. Growth analysis methods were applied to describe the trends exhibited by the canopy and plant’s growth. Maize plants fertilized with zinc were able to increase the rate of nitrogen uptake, as indicated by the values of absolute crop uptake rate for N (CUR-N), at two distinct time-separated phases of growth, i.e., (i) from 7th to 9th leaf and (ii) from milk to physiological maturity of kernels growth. Physiological processes occurring in these two time-separated phases resulted in an increase of maize yielding capacity. The effect of zinc as recorded in the first phase resulted in extension rate of new organs or tissues ingrowth, as confirmed by the RGR analysis. At the reproductive phase of maize growth, plants well supplied with zinc accumulated more nitrogen, which was a prerequisite for significantly higher rate of dry matter accumulation, as confirmed both by CGR and RGR analyses. The amount of extra nitrogen taken up by Zn treated plants was sufficiently high to increase grain yield by 1.5 t ha-1, which was achieved in the conducted experiment.
Dwuletnie doświadczenie polowe przeprowadzono w celu wyjaśnienia przyczyn wzrostu plonu ziarna kukurydzy dolistnie traktowanej nawozem cynkowym i oceny jego wpływu na dynamikę procesów akumulacji azotu i suchej masy w okresie wegetacji. Do opisu uzyskanych trendów zastosowano metody analizy wzrostu łanu i rośliny.

Opis:
As reported in the paper by Grzebisz et al. (this issue), maize crop treated foliarly with fertilizer zinc at early stages of growth produced significantly high yields. Growth analysis procedures were applied to explain various effects of fertilizer zinc on grain yield increase and zinc accumulation and redistribution among maize organs in the course of the growing season. Therefore, based on the obtained zinc uptake characteristics, two major and one minor, but time-separated hot spots of zinc accumulation by maize plants have been distinguished. The first one, as described by RUR-Zn data, extended from the BBCH7 to BBCH9 stages. The second one, as expressed by CUR-Zn data, appeared during the milk stage of kernels growth and could be decisive for kernels sink capacity for accumulating carbohydrates. A minor hot spot, which occurred at tasselling may be responsible for pollen production and activity. The first zinc hot spot has also revealed the diagnostic problem of soil and plant tests for zinc. Current tests tend to overestimate plant zinc nutritional status, and therefore need to be urgently revised. Vegetative organs such as leaves and stems were only the minor sources of zinc for developing maize kernels. During grain filling period, most zinc absorbed by maize plants originated from soil resources.

Opis:
Due to increasing competition and market saturation, textile companies try to find new solutions to attract customers. Companies propose new materials, reorganize distribution strategies and develop interactive communication. Producers, distributors and retailers of textile products have also started to implement alternative strategies like sensory strategy. However, the study showed that the influence of the senses on the purchase behaviour of the consumer and their perception of textile products is not high. As was proved in the study, men and women do not perceive and react equally to sensory cues in the choice and evaluation of textile products. Contrary to female respondents, male purchase behaviour was not explained by either emotional or cognitive variables. Therefore it is suggested that the design and implementation of the sensory strategy should be more focused on the female rather than male target group due to their higher sensitivity to sensory stimuli.

Sedges are attractive ornamental plants, thanks to the specific structure of their inflorescences, perigynium morphology, an interesting habit and extended dates of individual phenological stages varying between species. Analyses were conducted on 15 sedge species differing in traits of their inflorescence shoots and varying in the shape and size of perigynia. Species characteristic of diverse habitats were selected so that they would meet the full spectrum of requirements of landscape architects. A nine-point scale was applied in this study, in which the decorative value of the investigated sedges was assessed. The greatest decorative value scores were recorded for Carex spicata, C. remota and C. pallescens (19 points each) and C. paniculata (18). In contrast, the lowest scores were found for C. ericetorum (12), C. digitata (13) and C. curta (14). Sedges planted in gardens are highly desirable elements of the landscape, particularly thanks to the phenotypic plasticity observed practically in all species throughout the entire vegetative season.

The aim of the quality of the consumed food is to guarantee a proper functioning of the body and its development according to gender, age, physical condition and demographic and environmental circumstances. Due to the ongoing development and the migrant flows, the rules and dietary habits have changed. The quality of production, in particular the production of raw materials, partly-finished and finished products and the marketing of foods are particularly susceptible to threats of physical, chemical and biological origin. There are constantly increasing demands placed on food manufacturers to ensure foods that are safe to the human health and life. The expectations of stakeholders are constantly rising and to meet their requirements, organisations often have to implement organisational, production, social and environmental changes as part of the process management aimed at improving/increasing quality. The objective of this study is to present activities in the field of food safety. A particular attention was paid to the quality management systems and to institutions supervising food security. The study attempted to present the frequent food safety hazards and their solutions in the food chain.

Opis:
The variability of pollen grains of 16 species from genus Rosa L. was studied (i.e. Rosa agrestis, R. canina, R. dumalis, R. gallica, R. inodora, R. jundzillii, R. kostrakiewiczii, R. majalis, R. micrantha, R. mollis, R. pendulina, R. rubiginosa, R. sherardii, R. tomentosa, R. villosa, and R. zalana). The material came from 107 native localities of those species in Poland. The measurements are based on at least 30–50 randomly selected mature pollen grains per specimen. In total, 3510 pollen grains were examined. They were analysed for 8 quantitative features, i.e. length of polar axis (P), length of equatorial axis (E), exine thickness on the pole (Exp), exine thickness at the equator plane (Exe), length of ectocolpi (Le), P/E ratio, and relative thickness of exine (Exp/P and Exe/E ratio). Statistically significant differences were found among the examined species with regard to all analysed pollen features. The pollen and ectocolpi dimensions (P, E and Le) were largest in R.gallica (35.9, 28.1, and 28.0 μm, respectively) and smallest in R. majalis (27.0, 20.2, and 21.2 μm, respectively). The mean coefficients of variability of the pollen features measured can be used to arrange the examined rose species from the least to the most variable as follows: R. pendulina, R. villosa, R. jundzillii, R. inodora, R. canina, R. rubiginosa, R. dumalis, R. gallica, R. agrestis , R. micrantha, R. zalana, R. tomentosa, R. sherardii, R. majalis, R. kostrakiewiczii and R. mollis. The obtained data failed to confirm fully both the division of the Rosa genus currently in force in taxonomy into sections as well as relationships among the examined species from the Caninae section. In addition, values of morphological characters of the same species may differ considerably from one another. The extent of these differences indicated that it was necessary to measure large numbers of pollen grains in order to obtain accurate biometric data.

The objective of this study was to investigate the ranges of intra- and interindividual variability on the example of R. canina. For this purpose, four flowers were collected randomly (72 flowers in total)from 18 wild shrubs of R. canina growing in one population in Poznań (Poland)and then, from each flower, 50 correctly formed pollen grains (200 pollen grains per each individual)were selected. Inter- and intraindividual pollen grain variability was characterised based on 3600 pollen grains. They were analysed for seven quantitative features, i.e. length of polar axis (P), equatorial diameter (E), thickness of the exine along the polar axis (Exp), length of ectocolpi (Le) and P/E, Exp/P, and Le/P ratios. Our study revealed highly significant differences among flowers of the particular R. canina individuals with respect to all pollen grain biometrical features. In addition, it showed that the assessment of the full range of variability in pollen grain biometric features within one individual (shrub)was more reliable if we examined several pollen grains from several flowers than for the same number of pollen grains derived from a single flower. We also found statistically significant differences among particular individuals in all pollen grain features. This proves that in order to well characterise a population of a given species from the point of view of palynology, the plant material should derive from a possibly numerous number of individuals (shrubs).

Opis:
Stress causes the activation of both the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis and sympatho-adrenal system, thus leading to the release from the adrenal medulla of catecholamines: adrenaline and, to a lesser degree, noradrenaline. It has been established that in addition to catecholamines, the adrenomedullary cells produce a variety of neuropeptides, including corticoliberine (CRH), vasopressin (AVP), oxytocin (OXY) and proopiomelanocortine (POMC) – a precursor of the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). The aim of this study was to investigate adrenal medulla activity in vitro depending, on a dose of CRH, AVP and OXY on adrenaline and noradrenaline release. Pieces of sheep adrenal medulla tissue (about 50 mg) were put on 24-well plates and were incubated in 1 mL of Eagle medium without hormone (control) or supplemented only once with CRH, AVP and OXY in three doses (10⁻⁷, 10⁻⁸ and 10⁻⁹ M) in a volume of 10 μL. The results showed that CRH stimulates adrenaline and noradrenaline release from the adrenal medulla tissue. The stimulating influence of AVP on adrenaline release was visible after the application of the two lower doses of this neuropeptide; however, AVP reduced noradrenaline release from the adrenal medulla tissue. A strong, inhibitory OXY effect on catecholamine release was observed, regardless of the dose of this hormone. Our results indicate the important role of OXY in the inhibition of adrenal gland activity and thus a better adaptation to stress on the adrenal gland level.

Opis:
One of the problems in the development of the agro-food industry is the production of enormous quantities of organic waste. In recent years, in order to minimize the negative impact of waste on the environment, emphasis is put on their recycling. Organic matter derived from poultry industry waste can be processed into other products, including compost. The aim of the study was to evaluate the phytoremediation of selected plant species on the compost substrate obtained from the poultry waste as compared to other commercial composts available on the market. Analyses used the Phytotoxkit containing three test species: sorghum (Sorghum saccharatum), bittercress (Lepidium sativum) and white mustard (Sinapis alba). The test plants were placed on four different substrates: control soil, poultry compost, vermicompost and Compo Sana®. Phyto-reactivity of plants tested on compost prepared from poultry waste on a background of other commercial products was dependent on the plant species and the type of substrate. Poultry waste compost exhibited equally good nutritional properties in the composition of macro and micronutrients, which determined the growth and development of seedlings. It particularly refers to the stimulation of the growth of underground parts of mustard and bittercress, respectively 65% and 86% of the control value, and the aboveground parts, that were higher by 46% and 38%, respectively.

The “Źródła Rzeki Łyny im. prof. R. Kobendzy” nature reserve was established in 1959 and occupies the area of 120.54 ha. The paper describes fl ora and plant communities of this reserve. In total 409 vascular plant taxa from 70 families and 235 genera were inventoried, including 24 species which are under legal protection, as well as rare plants and those which are threatened in this region. Nine plant communities were identifi ed within the boundaries of the reserve of which three were forest autogenic or autogenic-like communities (Ribeso nigri-Alnetum, Stellario nemorum-Alnetum glutinosae, Tilio cordatae- -Carpinetum betuli), three were forest anthropogenic communities with Pinus sylvestris, Betula pendula, Larix decidua and Larix ×eurolepis and Picea abies on lime-oak-hornbeam forest sites, as well as three non-forest communities (Salicetum pentandro-cinereae, Phragmitetum australis and a meadow community from the Molinio-Arrhenatheretea class). The highest natural value was determined in very well developed phytocoenoses of Stellario nemorum-Alnetum glutinosae (the rarest in the reserve), in Ribeso nigri-Alnetum and Tilio cordatae-Carpinetum betuli, as well as meadow communities from the Molinio-Arrhenatheretea class. They provide sanctuary for many species of rare and threatened plants.

Opis:
The research was carried out within three forest-park complexes located in the south-western part of the Poznań city, which once had the status of ecological uses. The aim of the work was to inventory a dendroflora for the selection of trees with monumental dimensions. In addition, changes in the participation of monumental trees in local vegetation over the last 12 years had been analysed. During the current inventory, 58 monumental specimens were recorded in three afforestation complexes. Most of them grew at Leszczyńska street (31 specimens), and the least at Tyniecka street (6). Since 2004 tree trunk perimeters had increased on average of 18.5 cm. All activities, including conservation works, undertaken in the three described afforestation complexes, or in the immediate vicinity, should lead to the preservation of these objects, their protection against devastation and to expose their most valuable fragments.
