The geodetic measurements of surface geometry can be performed with new laser scanning technologies. This paper presents the results of such measurements of external surface of cooling tower using Leica TCRP 1201+ tacheometer and Image Station 03 video tacheometer. The overlapping data sets of consecutive scans were investigated in order to propose a method to compound partial surface scans. The data analysis included estimation of systematic errors in common sections of scans. The results of obtained surfaces were compared with precise point measurements using Leica TCRP 1201+.

In just a few years, gene expression microarrays have rapidly become a standard experimental tool in the biological and medical research. Microarray experiments are being increasingly carried out to address the wide range of problems, including the cluster analysis. The estimation of the number of clusters in datasets is one of the main problems of clustering microarrays. As a supplement to the existing methods we suggest the use of a density based clustering technique DBSCAN that automatically defines the number of clusters. The DBSCAN and other existing methods were compared using the microarray data from two datasets used for diagnosis of leukemia and lung cancer.

Qualitative and quantitative analysis of phenolic acids present as free and liberated from their conjunction with sugars and alcohols after hydrolysis in Salsola kali L was done, together with comparison of their content in roots and herb. Analysis was conducted by 2D-TLC and HPLC methods. Eleven phenolic acids were identified such as: protocatechuic, caffeic, gentisic, p-coumaric, p-hydroxybenzoic, p-hydroxyphenylacetic, syryngic, vanillic, ferulic, α- and ß-resorcylic. Differences in composition of fraction of free phenolic acids and those liberated after hydrolysis were noticed. The amount of individual compounds were in the range between 0.10±0.04 mg/100 g of dry weight for p-OH-benzoic acid and 6.40±1.75 mg/100 g of dry weight for ferulic acid.

Opis:
This in vitro study evaluated the temperature rise on the outer root surface of the mandibular first molar following root canal filling using the high-temperature, thermoplasticized, Gutta-Percha technique (HTTG) (BeeFill) in the dog. Twelve extracted dog mandibular first molars were used. After root canal preparation, the teeth were filled with thermoplasticized Gutta-Percha and root canal sealer. Temperature changes on the vestibular surfaces of the mesial and distal roots of mandibular first molars were measured using a thermal imaging camera. The results of this in vitro study showed that using HTTG to fill mandibular first molars in dogs produces a safe temperature rise on the root surface and, therefore, should not damage the periodontal ligament and/or surrounding tissues.

The aim of the research was to determine the energy changes during the gait cycle for a group of healthy children and a group of patients with cerebral palsy, and to compare the value of energy expenditure (EE) with the determined values of the Gillette Gait Index (GGI) and the Gait Deviation Index (GDI). Methods: The study group consisted of 56 children with regular gait and 56 patients with diagnosed cerebral palsy (CP). The gait kinematics was determined by BTS Smart System. Based on the identified position of the body mass, the following parameters were determined: the potential energy, kinetic energy, and total energy. The values were standardized to 100% of the gait cycle. The values of the Gillette Gait Index (GGI) and the Gait Deviation Index (GDI) were calculated using the authors’ own software. Results: Values of potential, kinematic and mechanical energy changes and mean values of total energy (energy expenditure – EE) were calculated for a reference group and for patients with CP. The obtained results were standardized in relation to the body mass and stride length. Furthermore, the values of the Gillette Gait Index (GGI) and the Gait Deviation Index (GDI) were calculated. Statistical analysis of the obtained results was performed. The Spearman rank correlation coefficient was defined between the calculated GGI and GDI values and energy expenditure EE. Conclusions: Values of energy expenditure changes can be used as an objective comparative tool for gait results concerning children with various neurological and orthopaedic dysfunctions.

Opis:
Purpose: Defining the influence of parameters of visual disorders on ability of balancing turns out to be an important process in effective diagnostics. Current diagnostic methods relating mainly to determination of the coefficient of BRUTM (Balance Rehabilitation Unit Trade Mark) depend on lots of tests carried out in a disturbed environment created by Virtual Reality Technology. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of the frequency of visual disturbances on stabilographic values in the virtual reality environment. Methods: The study was carried out involving one research group in Virtual Cave. There were induced visual disturbances with different frequencies and with the change of frequency during measuring the position of the center of pressure (COP) in the test. Before each test the reference test was performed. All tests were performed with disorders in two different sceneries: closed and open scenery. All measurements were carried out on an immobile Zebris platform which enables determination of feet pressure distribution. From the measured values of the position of the COP Short Time Fourier Transform (STFT) was calculated. Results: The results of calculation are shown in graphs. Their analysis showed that changing the parameters of disorder frequency in world created using Virtual Reality Technology affects stabilographic parameters. The intensity of these changes is also affected by applied research scenery. Conclusions: Conditions have been set out to carry out similar studies in order to obtain reliable results. The study is the first step in a project to develop a system for diagnosis and rehabilitation of human movement using Virtual Reality Technology.

The Baryczka stream is a small (about 20 km long), left bank tributary of the River San (Podkarpackie Voivodeship). Studies on diversity of diatom communities using OMNIDIA software were conducted in 2010 and 2011. Diatomaceous indices IPS, GDI and TDI and Van Dam et al. classification system were used for water quality assessment. Planothidium lanceolatum, Cocconeis placentula var. lineata, Achnanthidium minutissimum var. minutissimum, Nitzschia linearis, Rhoicosphenia abbreviata, Navicula lanceolata and Naicula gregaria were the most numerous. Values of the IPS index indicate good water quality (II–III class). Based on the GDI index, waters of the Baryczka stream were classified to III class water quality. The TDI index indicated poor and bad ecological state on the most sampling sites. On all sampling sites alaliphilous (pH>7) diatoms taxa predominated. The most common were eutraphentic and hypereutraphentic diatoms. With respect to trophy, it was shown that α- and β-mesosaprobous diatoms were the most common (III and II class water quality).

Quantitative determination of polysaccharides in Ganoderma lucidum fruit bodies from different sawdust cultivation substrates and their antibacterial activity was done. Thirty six samples were analyzed. Four strains of Ganoderma lucidum (GL01, GL02, GL03 and GL04) were cultivated on the growth substrates of three different sawdust types: birch (Bo), maple (Kl) or alder (Ol) amended with wheat bran in three different concentrations: 10, 20 and 30% (w/w). Even though the richest in polysaccharides was GL01 strain, the highest yields of the polysaccharides were determined in GL04Kl3 sample and was 112.82 mg/g of dry weight. The antibacterial activity of polysaccharides was determined in vitro using micro-dilution broth method. The panel of eight reference bacterial strains was used. All the polysaccharide samples tested showed the broad spectrum and the moderate antibacterial activity. Micrococcus luteus ATCC 10240 strain was the most sensitive with MIC (minimal inhibitory concentration) = 0.63 − 1.25 mg/mL.
