In the present paper, the results from investigations regarding interfacial tensions present at the borders of a liquid aluminum alloy and two selected melted fluxes (mixtures of salts) are presented. The fluxes feature solidification characteristic curves that are very close to each other as well as differentiated chemical compositions. For the comparative investigations, the so-called surface property index (WS) is calculated for both fluxes with the use of the ion theory of slags. The investigations of the interfacial tensions were conducted on a stand that enabled the measurement of the force values accompanying the tearing-off of the probe from the interfacial surface. A very clear relationship between the interfacial tension values and the WS index values that characterize both fluxes was found. An increase in the WS index value resulted in an increase in the investigated interfacial tension values. It was also found that, in both cases under investigation, an increase in the system temperature value resulted in an increase of the values of the interfacial tensions present within. In the conclusion, we state that the metallurgical treatments (for instance, the recycling of the cast metal composite materials by way of component separation) should be conducted with the use of salt mixtures (fluxes) characterized with WS index and melting temperature values as low as possible.

Opis:
Effectiveness of the slags used in metallurgy of aluminum alloys and in recycling of composite materials containing these alloys depends on their surface properties at the phase boundaries they are in contact with. An index of surface properties of molten mixtures of slag-forming salts has been formulated. Its calculated values are compared with measured results of surface tension (liquid – atmosphere) and interfacial tension (liquid – liquid) in the considered systems. It was found that the index can be helpful for purposes of proper choice of the mixtures of slag-forming salts used both in Al alloys metallurgy and in recycling of composite materials based on the matrix of Al alloys.
Skuteczność żużli stosowanych w metalurgii stopów aluminium i recyklingu kompozytów z udziałem tych stopów, zależy od ich właściwości powierzchniowych na granicach faz, z którymi mają kontakt. Opracowano wskaźnik właściwości powierzchniowych stopionych mieszanin soli żużlotwórczych, a jego wyliczone wartości porównano z wynikami pomiarów napięć powierzchniowych (ciecz-atmosfera) i międzyfazowych (ciecz-ciecz) dla badanych układów. Stwierdzono, że wskaźnik ten może być przydatny w doborze mieszanin soli żużlotwórczych stosowanych zarówno w metalurgii stopów Al, jak i recyklingu materiałów kompozytowych na osnowie stopów Al.

The problem of optimal assignment of respondents to internet surveys has been considered. The task is taken from a leading online research company in Central and Eastern Europe, which runs several dozen surveys in parallel. Each survey is assigned a target number of responses to be collected and unique selection criteria for choosing respondents based on their socio-demographic data. A mathematical programming model has been proposed that enables us to find an optimal mechanism for assigning respondents to surveys so as to minimize the required total number of invitations to surveys issued. A side effect of the assignment procedure is that the samples obtained are not representative of the population under survey. Therefore, a sample weighting scheme has been developed that takes this fact into account and allows us to obtain unbiased estimators of the characteristics of the population surveyed.

Purpose: Many printers are tempting at low prices, but later their accuracy turns out to be insufficient. The study has included checking the accuracy of printing and reproducing details of 3D printers used in dental technology and dentistry such as MultiJet Printing (ProJet MP3000, 3D Systems) and Fused Deposition Modelling (Inspire S2000, Tiertime). Design/methodology/approach: The 3D prints were created from scans of the maxillary gypsum model with the loss of left premolar. In the test, objects were set to the X and Y-axis. In order to check the dimensional differences after printing, scans of the printed models were superimposed on scans of the plaster model in the GOM Inspect V8 SR1 (Braunschweig, Germany). The focus was on the distance of scans from each other and a deviation map was created for each object. Findings: The average absolute value of deviations for each of models were equalled: FDM- for X-axis 0.06 ± 0.04 mm, for Y-axis 0.07 ± 0.04 mm; MJP- for X-axis- 0.04 ± 0.02 mm, for Y-axis- 0.06 ± 0.02 mm. A chart of arithmetic averages calculated for each tooth for the best printouts in each series show that higher deviation values exist in case of FDM printout. The models printed in the X-axis have smaller values of deviations from those printed in the Y-axis. Practical implications: MultiJet Printing technology can be used to create more precise models than the FDM, but these printouts meet the requirements of dimensional accuracy too. Originality/value: CAD / CAM technology in the future will exist in every dental technology laboratory so it is important to be aware of the way the 3D printers works. By paying attention to the quality of detail reproduction, a Dental Technician is able to choose the best 3D printer for them.

Heat shock proteins have essential roles in a number of pathophysiologic conditions including carcinogenesis and represent a group of novel molecular markers in cancer management. The aim of this study was to investigate heat shock protein expression in correlation with other neoplasm traits such as: histological type, differentiation grade, proliferative activity, estrogenic receptor expression, and cyclooxygenase-2 and p53 proteins. Material for the investigation comprised 133 tumors of the mammary gland collected from bitches. In total 14 adenomas, 66 complex carcinomas, 47 simple carcinomas and 6 solid carcinomas were collected. Evaluations were conducted with histopathological and immunohistochemical methods using suitable antibodies. Expression of heat shock protein 70 was observed in all types of evaluated neoplasms. A higher average number of cells undergoing expression of heat shock protein 70, which was statistically insignificant, was established in complex and simple cancers and in cancers with the 1st and the 2nd degree of histological malignancy. Expression of heat shock protein 90 was observed in all studied neoplasms; it was very insignificant in adenomas, compared to cancers, and the highest expression was established in the solid cancers, as well as in cancers with the 2nd degree of histological malignancy. This high expression of heat shock protein 90 was correlated with proliferative activity. The results suggest that heat shock protein 90 is involved in canine mammary gland carcinogenesis. The results also suggest that heat shock protein 90 may be a prognostic factor, but this requires detailed clinical confirmation.

Introduction and objective: Pain is the most common and universal symptom among all patients with the oncological disease. Pain significantly reduces the quality of life, hinders decent functioning, and plays a significant role in the deterioration of the mental health of the patient and his close relatives. The study aimed to discuss the mainstreaming of effective pain treatment and to review various assessments and scales (including Brief Pain Inventory, Illness Perception Questionnaire and Numeric Rating Scale) concerning the psychological aspect of pain in selected neoplastic diseases.State of knowledge: We can distinguish various treatments for pain that can be divided into pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods. Latest studies revealed that pain treatment appears to be more and more meaningful. Various factors might influence pain perception and response to the applied treatment. Among all malignancies, special attention is paid to the pain issue in following cancers: colon cancer, gastric cancer, pancreatic cancer, ovarian cancer, breast cancer and lung cancer, that were described in this paper. Conclusions: Effective pain relief presents a positive effect, both on the physical and mental state of the patient. It also helps to maintain calm mental health among relatives. Nowadays, integration of the best methods for pain relief that are characterized as humanitarian, easily accessible and effective, seems to be one of the biggest challenges for both oncological and palliative health workers.

Introduction and objective. αB-crystallin belongs to the ubiquitous family of small heat-shock proteins. It was discovered as a physiological protein of the eye lens, maintaining its liquid-like property. Furthermore, αB-crystallin was proved to playa bipolar role in both physiological and pathophysiological conditions. This review discusses current knowledge about the biology and genetics of αB-crystallin, and summarizes recent advances in understanding its role in ophthalmic and neurological disorders, as well as breast cancer, renal cancer and other malignancies. State of knowledge. α-crystallins are established as important elements of the protein quality control network, and consequently their defects are related to multiple human diseases. New studies highlight αB-crystallin’s involvement in proliferative diabetic retinopathy angiogenesis and point out its therapeutic potential in age-related macular degeneration. αB-crystallin is thought to be associated with the disease-causing protein aggregates, leading to its connection with such neurological disturbances as anaplastic astrocytoma, Parkinson disease, aging deficits in the peripheral nervous system and multiple sclerosis. In breast cancer, it was proven to be a marker of aggressive behaviur and cerebral metastases. Strong expression of αB-crystallin promoted growth and migration of clear cell renal cell carcinoma cells and was correlated with lower overall survival rate. Considering other malignancies, its various roles were established in colorectal and gastric cancers, head and neck squamous cell carcinomas and osteosarcomas. Conclusions. Further studies concerning αB-crystallin seem to be enormously promising, as they might improve our understanding of common human pathologies as well as contemporary diagnostics and treatment.

Autophagy is a self-degradation process of cellular components. It plays both antiviral and pro-viral roles in the life cycle of different viruses and the pathogenesis of different viral diseases. In this study, we evaluated autophagy induction in splenocytes of ectromelia virus (ECTV)-resistant C57BL/6 and ECTV-susceptible BALB/c mice during infection with the Moscow strain of the ectromelia virus (ECTV-MOS). Autophagy was analyzed using the Western blot method by assessing type II microtubule-associated protein 1 (MAP1) light chain 3 (LC3) and Beclin 1 expression levels relative to β-actin. Results indicated an increased ratio of LC3-II to β-actin in splenocytes of C57BL/6 mice only at 7 day post infection (d.p.i.) compared to uninfected animals. LC3-II/β-actin and Beclin 1/β-actin ratios in splenocytes of BALB/c mice increased at 5 d.p.i. and remained high until day 14 and 7 p.i., respectively. We confirmed the formation of autophagosome structures in the spleen of BALB/c mice by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Moreover, autophagy accompanied necrosis in the splenocytes of infected animals. Results suggest that ECTV-MOS induced autophagy, especially in the spleen of the susceptible mouse strain, may support viral replication and promote cell necrosis.

Introduction and objective: E74-like transcription factor 3 (ELF3) is mainly expressed in epithelial tissue, being responsible for differentiation and regeneration. Furthermore, it plays a role in inflammation, remodeling, allergy regulation and apoptosis. Various studies on ELF3 conducted since 1997 have also proved its connection with carcinogenesis and metastasis. This review summarizes recent advances in understanding the role of ELF3 in the following cancers: ampullary, bladder, breast, gastric, hepatocellular, nasopharyngeal, thyroid, lung and ovarian ones. State of knowledge: There are still many unresolved and undiscovered issues regarding ELF3 mutations, however, based on research since 2016, a link to many signaling pathways important for carcinogenesis has been shown. There is no simple correlation between a specific ELF3 mutation and effect on cancer cells. In various types of cancers, ELF3 is associated with other pathways, and modifications exerted by silencing or amplifying its or associated genes, cause different effects in patient prediction. An example of the effect of ELF3 on tumor progression is achieved by negatively regulating the ZEB1 transcription factor responsible for metastasis. WNT, RAS, Akt, mTOR, HER2, Cyclin D, IRF6 are other ELF3-related factors that affects pathways crucial for tumorigenesis. Conclusions: Further research and attempts to use ELF3 in the treatment and prognosis of cancer appear to be beneficial.

Introduction. An adverse event is an incident induced while providing health care services or resulting from it, not related to the natural course of a given disease or health condition, which causes or is likely to cause negative consequences for the patient, including their death, a threat to life, the necessity of hospitalisation or its prolongation, permanent or considerable health detriment; or is a foetal disease, congenital defect or the result of foetal damage. Objective. The aim of this analysis is to explore the problem of the occurrence of adverse events from the perspective of doctors and ward nurses who manage wards. Materials and method. The research on the occurrence of adverse events among doctors and nurses (the management staff) was conducted with the use of a postal survey. Results. It was ascertained that 86.5% of the medical personnel had taken part in an adverse event, of which 20.2% took part in an occurrence associated with pharmacotherapy, 16.2% – in an event related to diagnostics and diagnosis, or an infection – 15.7%. 14.2% of respondents were involved in an occurrence linked to a medical device malfunction, and 14.1% – in an adverse event related to an operation. Conclusions. The adverse events most often identified in the nursing professional group are occurrences associated with pharmacotherapy, and in the doctors’ professional group – occurrences related to diagnostics and diagnosis. The research established that the most frequent reason for not informing patients about the occurrence of an adverse event is fear of their filing a complaint. Medical management staff show high acceptance of an adverse event reporting system as a tool for improving patient safety.

Introduction: Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) occurs in 5–15% of all cases of breast cancer. In most studies, it is found to be more common among older patients, form larger tumours and present with ill-defined margins, in comparison to invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC). Material and methods: Histological preparations were obtained from 651 patients suffering from breast cancer. Preparations stained with hematoxylin and eosin were used to identify tumour type and grading. Samples underwent a basic molecular profile evaluation encompassing ER (oestrogen receptor), PR (progesterone receptor) and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) expression. Results: 592 cases of IDC and 59 cases of ILC were detected. The median age was 60 in both groups. While there were no statistically significant differences between IDC and ILC in nodal status and tumour size for all age groups, IDC was more frequently diagnosed at higher grading (G3). G3 accounted for 32% of all IDC specimens compared to only 13% of ILC specimens. In both groups, the most prevalent combination of hormone receptors was ER+/PR+/HER2-. The differences in ER and PR expression were statistically significant; both were assessed as positive in most ILC cases and just over half of IDC. No HER2 amplification was noted in most cases in both cancer subtypes. Conclusions: In our study, IDC and ILC showed no difference with respect to patients’ median age at the diagnosis and local disease advancement defined by TNM. ILC cases were hormone-dependent and HER2-negative more frequently than IDC. Grade 3 tumours accounted for a higher proportion of IDC cases. This was in line with several other clinicopathological analyses of breast cancer. However, there are also several papers indicating ILC’s association with favourable prognostic features, not only in terms of hormone receptors and HER2 expression but also tumour size and nodal involvement. This underlines the fact that clear differences between IDC and ILC prognosis still cannot be established.

In this paper selected problems on building complex object (virtual model of intake conduit for the engine of F-16 aircraft) for the needs of numerical analysis, including numerical analysis of intake vortex phenomenon, are presented. The process of discretization in selected problem was described and few hints and guidelines for preparing and performing the process of computational area discretization were contained. In the next section test results were presented with the purpose of examining the accurateness of object’s shape and selected computational grid, chosen boundary conditions and algorithm of solution. This paper is an introduction to conducting wider analysis of a dangerous, from the perspective of engine’s life, phenomenon which is the air intake vortex development on F-16 aircraft.
W artykule zaprezentowano metodykę budowy modelu parametrycznego na potrzeby analizy drgań własnych elementów lotniczego silnika turbinowego. Omówiono proces modelowania w ujęciu systemowym w zastosowaniu do procesu optymalizacji łopatki turbiny. Przedstawiono osobliwości projektowania lotniczego silnika turbinowego i jego zespołów. Opracowano algorytmy wyboru punktów z danych pomiarowych do utworzenia wzorca. Przeprowadzono dyskusję doboru krzywych do parametrycznego modelowania z uwzględnieniem wejść do procesu optymalizacji odwzorowania powierzchni bazując na technice inżynierii odwrotnej. Przedstawiono proces odwzorowania geometrii od etapu wykonania precyzyjnych pomiarów, identyfikacji danych, weryfikacji krzywych, aż do utworzenia bryły modelowanego obiektu. W pracy zawarto założenia opracowanych przez autorów i zastosowanych algorytmów modelowania elementów struktur lotniczych.

Opis:
Selected problems of a complex structure, namely the fuselage-shielded inlet model of a turbine jet engine for numerical analysis purposes of the intake vortex formation phenomenon are presented in this paper. As a result of numerical analysis, an intake vortex has been developed. The analysis of the impact of changes in speed, angle and the direction of gust on vortex development has been conducted. Also, consequences of ingestion of foreign objects by the inlet and relevant statistics concerning damage to turbine engines have been presented.
