Opis:
The article indicates how the figure of Zofia Kossak has been recorded in the unpublished accounts by former KL Auschwitz-Birkenau female internees who during their internment came into contact with the famous writer and activist of the Polish Underground State. Their testimonies diverge from the hagiographic tone which has dominated the known stories of Kossak’s camp experiences, rather resembling Tadeusz Borowski’s infamous post-WWII article entitled Alicja w krainie czarów.

The purpose of this study was a diagnosis of the attitudes of students of Warsaw universities towards people with disabilities and the variables which impacted on these attitudes. Additionally, we examined the relationship between the need for social approval and explicit attitudes towards people with disabilities. The study focused on two components of attitudes: behavioural (measured by preferable social distance – SDSB) and cognitive (tested with a semantic differential scale – SDSO). 318 students completed a survey including a demographic sheet, a social desirability scale, the SDSB and SDSO. The results indicate that students expressed positive attitudes towards people with disabilities. The impact of such variables as gender, the type of disability and the need for social approval was registered and were differentiated in regard to components of attitudes. The results are discussed with reference to earlier research and cues for further studies are suggested.

Opis:
In this study, sol-gel bioactive glasses and β-TCP composites were investigated regarding their thermal behaviour, microstructure, and phase composition. Sol-gel bioactive glasses based on the CaO-SiO2 -P2O5 system of either a high SiO2 content (S2) or a high CaO content (A2) were mixed with the β-TCP at 25:75, 50:50 and 75:25 weight ratios. Basing on the HSM results, i.e. shrinkage curves, densification intervals and characteristic temperatures, the sintering temperatures of composites were indicated. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction were used to determine the microstructure and phase composition of composites after sintering at selected temperatures, i.e. 1100°C and 1200°C. The SEM/EDX investigations proved the well-sintered and densified microstructure of the sintered composites. The chemistry of sol-gel bioactive glasses influenced both the thermal beha-viour and the phase composition of the composites. The dominant phases for A2-β-TCP materials were α-TCP, pseudowollastonite and β-TCP, while for S2-β-TCP – cristobalite, β-TCP, and α-TCP. However, the content of each phase varied, depending on the A2 or S2 content in the composite composition. Hot-stage microscopy provides useful information for selecting optimal sintering temperature in order to obtain well-sintered and strengthened material. Moreover, by a carefully selected combination of sol-gel bioactive glasses and β-TCP it is possible to obtain the materials with favorable phase composition with regard to biological activity.

Opis:
The interest in the properties of hydroxycinnamic acids with health-promoting properties is constantly increasing. That is why more and more research is being conducted to better understand these properties. Ferulic acid, FA (4-hydroxy-3-methoxycinnamic acid) is a derivative of hydroxycinnamic acid found in the plant tissue. It is possible to find him among others in bran cereal, popcorn bamboo shoots, and coffee. According to available literature data ferulic acid has a lot of biological properties, particularly appreciated in medicine. Its bioactive properties effectively contribute to the fight against diseases described as a civilization, including neurodegenerative diseases that increase the incidence. As reported the World Alzheimer Report, the number of people with dementia progression in 2016 exceeded 47.5 million, of which 33.5 million were diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. According to the WHO estimates, this number will triple by 2050. The manuscript presents health-promoting properties of FA on the example of its antioxidant, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, anti-atherosclerotic, neuroprotective, antineoplastic and antibacterial properties. In addition, the reaction of its synthesis in plants and in-vivo metabolization have been explained. The collected data suggest that bioactive FA molecules can effectively reduce the risk of civilization diseases and significantly reduce the level of oxidative stress contributing to the formation of neurodegenerative diseases.

Opis:
Honey is one of the world's most valued natural food products. Characteristic, pleasant aroma, golden colour, sweet taste and healthpromoting properties cause a continuous increase of honey consumption in the European Union. The most wanted is regional honey. However, imported honey available on the market has often lower prices. The honey obtained can be heat treated, which reduces water content and can slow down the growth of the microorganisms, which are responsible for the undesirable fermentation of honey. Unprocessed honey appears to be the healthiest, but in practice, it’s often heat treated to slow down or back up the crystallization process and to make its dosage during technical processes easier. It is widely believed that heating of honey may have a harmful impact on its properties. There are countless articles of popular science, that warn of heating and cooking with honey. Should honey never be heated? The aim of this work is to give an overview of the influence of technical processes on the physicochemical and health-promoting properties of honey. The results demonstrated that the physicochemical and bioactive properties of honey are significantly affected by thermal treatment. As a result of the temperature, it comes to the Maillard reaction, during which HMF is synthesized. Furthermore, heating affects the activity of the enzymes contained in honey, among others, diastase and inverses. However, few studies made in this field show that honey heat treatment may work in favour of antioxidant properties. Depending on the type of honey, melanoidins may increase or decrease the antioxidant activity.

Opis:
Background Given the growing number of occupational voice users, easy and quick broad-scale screening is necessary to provide prophylaxis of voice disorders. The aim of the study was to assess applicability of the Voice Related Quality of Life questionnaire (V-RQOL) to screening occupational voice disorders. Material and Methods The research comprised 284 subjects divided into 3 groups: 0 – the control group of normophonic subjects, non-professional voice users (N = 60), 1 – occupational voice users with objectively confirmed voice disorders (N = 124), 2 – the non-randomized group of occupational voice users with and without voice problems (N = 100). Self-assessment of voice was performed by means of the V-RQOL in comparison to the Voice Handicap Index (VHI). The relation between the V-RQOL and VHI was determined by means of linear regression. Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves were constructed and the cut-off point of the V-RQOL was determined to discriminate between normophonic and dysphonic subjects. Results The relationship between the VHI and V-RQOL scores indicated a satisfactory coefficient of determination: R² = 0.7266. High values of Cronbach’s α confirmed high reliability of the V-RQOL test (0.867). Voice-Related Quality of Life questionnaire (V-RQOL) results were significantly worse in the study group than for normophonic controls (p < 0.001). The cut-off point for the test was set at 79 points. The determined area under the curve (AUC) = 0.910 (p < 0.001) showed high diagnostic accuracy of the V-RQOL. Results of the V-RQOL differed for diagnose-based subgroups of dysphonic patients. Conclusions The study gives grounds for application of the V-RQOL as a reliable tool for screening occupational voice disorders. Med Pr 2018;69(2):119–128

The elderly population is characterised by chronic diseases. Both age-related changes in the body’s systems and diseases can lead, on the one hand, to undernutrition and consequent cachexia, and, on the other hand, to an excessive energy supply and reduced physical activity, leading to excessive body weight (overweight/obesity). Both cachexia and excess body weight are prognostic indicators. The authors discuss the occurrence of excessive body weight in the context of the obesity paradox, the multiple morbidities observed in this population group and the recommendations for further action aimed at reducing body weight.

Background The aim of this study has been to assess the larynx and soft tissue around the vocal tract in a group of people with healthy voice, and in a group of patients with occupational dysphonia using the new laryngeal manual therapy palpatory evaluation scale (LMTPE). Material and Methods The examinations were performed in a study (dysphonic) group of professional voice users who had developed voice disorders (N = 51) and in the control group of normophonic subjects (N = 50). All the participants underwent perceptual voice assessment and examination by means of the LMTPE scale. Additionally, phoniatric examination including VHI (Voice Handicap Index) questionnaire, GRBAS (the Grade of hoarseness, Roughness, Breathiness, Asthenic, Strained) perceptual evaluation, maximum phonation time (MPT) measurement and videostroboscopy was performed in the study group. Results The comparison of the LMTPE total score showed that the results of the study group were significantly poorer than those of controls (p < 0.001). In the study group, correlations were found between the LMTPE results and the VHI scores (p < 0.05), perceptual evaluation by the GRBAS (p < 0.05) and the objective parameter MPT (p < 0.05). Conclusions The study has proven that the LMTPE scale is characterized by the high score of Cronbach’s α ratio estimating the reliability of the test. The results have confirmed that the LMTPE scale seems to be a valuable tool, useful in diagnostics of occupational dysphonia, particularly of hyperfunction origin. Med Pr 2017;68(2):179–188

Opis:
Objectives Assessment of microbial air quality and surface contamination in ambulances and administration offices as a control place without occupational exposure to biological agents; based on quantitative and qualitative analysis of bacteria, yeasts and filamentous fungi found in collected samples. Material and Methods The sampling was done by wet cyclone technology using the Coriolis recon apparatus, imprint and swab methods, respectively. In total, 280 samples from 28 ambulances and 10 offices in Warszawa were tested. Data was analyzed using Shapiro-Wilk normality test, Kruskal-Wallis test with α = 0.05. P value ≤ 0.05 was considered as significant. Results The levels of air contamination were from 0 to 2.3×10¹ colony-forming unit (CFU)/m³ for bacteria and for yeast and filamentous fungi were from 0 to 1.8×10¹ CFU/m³. The assessment of office space air samples has shown the following numbers of microorganisms: bacteria from 3.0×10¹ to 4.2×10¹ CFU/m³ and yeast and filamentous fungi from 0 to 1.9×10¹ CFU/m³. For surface contamination the mean bacterial count in ambulances has been between 1.0×10¹ and 1.3×102 CFU/25 cm² and in offices – between 1.1×10¹ and 8.5×10¹ CFU/25 cm². Mean fungal count has reached the level from 2.8×10⁰ to 4.2×10¹ CFU/25 cm² in ambulances and 1.3×10¹ to 5.8×10¹ CFU/25 cm² in offices. The qualitative analysis has revealed the presence of Acinetobacter spp. (surfaces), coagulase – negative Staphylococci (air and surfaces), Aspergillus and Penicillium genera (air and surfaces). Conclusions The study has revealed a satisfactory microbiological quantity of analyzed air and surface samples in both study and control environments. However, the presence of potentially pathogenic microorganisms in the air and on surfaces in ambulances may endanger the medical emergency staff and patients with infection. Disinfection and cleaning techniques therefore should be constantly developed and implemented. Int J Occup Med Environ Health 2017;30(4):617–627
