Opis:
The article was devoted to the methodology of research on the relationship between literature-religion. Its aim is a critical reflection on the use of the category of ‘the sacred’ in the research. In Poland, in 70. of the last century, ‘the sacred’ has become the vital category for reflections on the religious aspects of literature (eliminating such terms as ‘catholic literature’ and ‘religious literature’). The historiographical method is used in the article. The author presents the steps of the presence of the category ‘the sacred’ in the humanities, especially in the Polish literature studies. The main results of the analysis: sacrological research had prepared us to meet study of literature and cultural studies. Many factors point to the fact that sacral research was one of the first attempts to build a bond between literary and cultural studies. The term ‘the sacred’ did not have classification or typological aim (such function was sometimes assigned to ‘religious literature’ term). Its wide range allowed activities that led to identification of the religious profile of the literary work. Its primary context was not any ideology or religious doctrine, but cultural anthropology, so it demanded culture studies competence more than being involved in world outlook. The wide range of the notion – completely natural and desirable in the anthropology of culture – did not have to be something obvious in the research of separate literary works, at times evoking the image of the world strictly connected with particular religion, or even particular worship. The answer to this was Stefan Sawicki’s offer to replace ‘the sacred’ category when analysing such works with other terms. Organizational measures undertaken by the founder of Lublin school of sacral research were soon verified by the reality of academic discussion – subject, as each discussion, to the rules of terminology fashion. ‘The sacred’ became fashionable term for some time – used and overused, perhaps. It became the key-word to open all possible references to religious sphere in literary works. It was applied not only where the layer of religious meaning remained generalized in the text, but also in those which were distinctly involved in the symbolic world of a specific religion. There were of course attempts to introduce new notion where the context demanded it. Taken in the article analyzes the concept of the sacred in literary studies have been limited mainly to the area of Polish literary criticism. The text encourages further research. It has practical significance. It explains the methods, can serve students and other readers (such as teachers or students) to acquire the skills to interpret literary texts. The author is not only critically discusses the use of the sacred in the research literature, but also proposes a new research tools in the form of the category of “spirituality”.

MONOGRAPH
HISTORY OF LITERATURE
Opis:
It is difficult to imagine the history of literature devoid of such mode of research expression as monography. It is still a popular form of synthetic expressions (after all the history of literature is condemned to synthesis). At the same time, however, a literary historian can base his actions less and less often on the theoretical-literary reflection. What vectors could turn us today towards a contemporary reading of literary texts – the reading which is far not only from ingenuous naivety but also from dangerous confidence in the power of individual research concepts? Some contemporary postulates of reading ethics give answer to these questions. They induce us to be distant towards any theoretical-literary or ideological prejudices and hence to the responsibility for the research method and the language describing a work of art. It seems that a thought which returns in the reflection of literary studies about the subjectivity of reading, about the necessity of considering the sphere of values in the process of reading (which modern ethics of reading calls for) induces to turn towards interpretation, return to the author and to axiology.

Opis:
Even though Fr. Janusz Stanisław Pasierb’s essay books enjoyed considerable popularity already during the author’s lifetime and they account for a sizeable portion of his writings, they have not been a subject of a separate study yet. Recently published Ars, fides et ratio. Esej teologiczny? (Tischner – Pasierb – Szymik) (Siedlce, 2012) [Ars, fides et ratio. A theological essay? (Tischner – Pasierb – Szymik)] by Aleksandra Pethe awakens hope for a revival in interest in Fr. Pasierb’s essays. The book itself contributes very little to the research on the writer’s essays, however it does pose important questions, among others on the mechanisms of the essayisation of homilies employed by Fr. Pasierb. It seems that other ways in which he transgressed various literary forms in the direction of theological essay deserve special attention. Fr. Pasierb’s writings remain open to state-of-the-art research tools and call for urgent investigation.

Opis:
The article attempts to establish the character of references to Norwid in texts by poets representative of Polish modernity, accounting for functions of intertextual allusions, initially in the area of collective consciousness. As it turns out, during the interwar period and the Second World War works by the Romantic master were referenced at all stages of developing a distinct literary identity. Poets would not just read Norwid’s texts, but in fact regard themselves in the mirror of his works. However, after 1956 Norwid’s presence in literary life was rooted in the needs of literary scholars rather than in actual intertextual references. This tendency also manifests in studies of works by individual authors. It does happen – especially when we speak of implicit traces of Norwid in contemporary poetry – that the plane of relations between authors is not addressed by interpreters. Sometimes, dialogue as a research category disappears from their view, while the body of Norwid’s works is treated merely as a context, becoming a kind of mirror meant to display more fully a certain theme or characteristic of somebody’s writing. However, the most important forms of Norwid’s functioning in contemporary times are ones that facilitate meetings(successfulor not), as demonstrated by the fascination with Norwid’s poetry recognizable in texts by authors such as Mieczysław Jastrun, Julian Przyboś and Tadeusz Różewicz.

Opis:
Czeslaw Milosz’s poem Późna dojrzałość describes the experience of spiritual breakthrough. His past time hero feels incomplete. Full--time starts for him at the time of “awakening”. However, deep experience of “me” leads eventually beyond ego – towards the relations with others. The protagonist recognizes both a personal value of himself and of the others. It is the dignity of a “child of the King”, it has its source not so much in axiology, as in the ontology. The described spiritual breakthrough does not solve world’s problems, but introduces a new perspective of their understanding. It allows – thanks to a deep experience of hope – to anticipate the future harmony. Internal doors allow the hero to look into something which will become complete at the end of time, yet it now exists in the form of announcement hidden in the structure of reality.

Axiology
Jerzy Stempowski
Opis:
For Stempowski the act of reading is inevitably linked to assessment and valuation. In his writings the poetics of reading takes shape of a specific axiology of reception. It becomes the theory of worthful reading. Looking from a perspective of an amateur reader allowed for the essayist to recognize the fragile bases of literary criticism, the dogmatism of a theoretic approach, and finally, the literary historians’ insensitivity to the contextual and situational values of the analysed works. It is precisely this attachment to the amateurish, i.e. affective and ‘loving’, relation with a piece of written work that prompted Stempowski to search for a look at literature that would not kill the joy of reading; one that would not limit the cognitive horizons and would also take into account the contextuality of literary works and their inevitable relation with the extra-literary reality that the reader is plunged into.
