Opis:
In the pressure form of Richards' seepage equation, the differential wa-ter capacity function is used and calculation of its values is necessary to solve the equation. The course of function variability was determined basing on the soil moisture characteristic. To obtain simpler solutions, the water capacity was expressed as a function of moisture. Using van Genuchten and logistic functions, its course for six soils available in the relevant literature was determined. Two sandy soils were used to dis-cuss the water capacity hysteresis and simple formulae were proposed, enabling the coefficient for scanning runs to be determined.

Opis:
The ability of identification of meat types using ultrasonic measurement was evaluated in this work. Four types of muscles were analyzed (turkey breast and thigh, and pork loin and ham). Ultrasonic measurements were performed at storage (5 ±1oC) and room (20±1oC) temperatures using the through-transmission technique and differential method of determination of sound velocity and the attenuation coefficient. The mean values of sound velocity for the breast, thigh, loin and ham were respectively: 1550.7, 1536.6, 1558.7, 1559.7 m/s at the storage temperature, and 1582.7, 1578.5, 1596.9, 1592.7 m/s at the room temperature. The mean values of the attenuation coefficient in the same order were: 21.3, 23.2, 30.6, 28.1 m-1 and 22.2, 18.9, 22.0, 22.4 m-1. Statistically significant differences in the sound velocity were observed between pork and turkey muscles, therefore, the meat of those species can be identified based on ultrasound measurements of sound velocity. The attenuation coefficient cannot be applied in the identification of meat types due to absence of significant differences in the mean values.

In the paper a quasi-analytical formula for moisture increase along the wetting front during infiltration into a soil column is presented. Based on the formula, the moisture distribution along the column of six soils available in the literature was calculated. Then their verification was carried out using empirical data and the results obtained from other type models. The impact on the front shape of such factors as recharge rate, initial moisture content and direction of seepage against the vertical was checked.

Opis:
This article sets out a manifesto for the development of an international values-based practice fully engaged with the diversity of cultural values and implemented through the resources of the international movement in philosophy and psychiatry. Anticipated by mid-twentieth century ordinary language philosophy of the “Oxford School,” the last three decades have witnessed a remarkable flowering of cross-disciplinary work between philosophy and psychiatry. The article indicates the scope and scale of this work and then describes the emergence of contemporary values-based practice as its philosophy-into-practice cutting edge. Values-based practice although originating in philosophy and psychiatry is currently being developed mainly in areas of bodily medicine such as surgery. As such, it has been criticized for focusing, as contemporary health care has largely focused, on the individual at the expense of cultural values. Hence arises the need for extending values-based practice internationally. The resources available from international philosophy and psychiatry for so extending values-based practice are outlined and some of the challenges are indicated. The article concludes with the hope that psychiatry in supporting the development of international values-based practice will by the same token take poll position in the development of contemporary science-led clinical care.

Dosimetric information concerning 4606 workers at the nuclear centre at Świerk (Poland) from 1956 to 2001 and medical records of 575 workers are reviewed. The average cumulative doses per person were 34 mSv (effective dose) and 18 mSv (equivalent dose to hands). The calculated odds ratio of cancers, OR = 0.90 (0.62–1.18; 68% CI), shows a statistically insignificant decrease of the cancer risk among the irradiated workers. No cancer cases were detected neither among 52 people exposed to the highest cumulative doses (from 35 to 653 mSv) nor among 43 workers who had been chronically irradiated for a long time (from 13 to 26 years).

Opis:
The mobile manipulator has the potential to become an efficient industrial robot due to its mobility and dexterity. Moreover, it has expanded the operational area of the mobile manipulator due to its ability to work in a limited space. However, adaptability to unknown environments has still not been developed to date. Therefore, adaptation of the mobile manipulator for unknown environments especially for rough/irregular terrain is discussed in this paper. Information about the environment, a key factor when aiming for compliance with an unknown and/or unstructured environment, was collected using a reaction torque observer. In order to adapt to the environment, compliance control was applied to the mobile manipulator. In this paper, we present a novel control strategy we have developed that can deal with unknown environments through the effective use of inverted pendulum control. Simulation and experiments were carried out to ensure the validity of the proposed method. The method could be confirmed as effective according to the results obtained.

Opis:
The development of a non-certainty-equivalent adaptive control system for the control of a nonlinear aeroelastic system is the subject of this paper. The prototypical aeroelastic wing section considered here includes structural nonlinearity and a single control surface for the purpose of control. Its dynamical model has two-degree-of-freedom and describes the plunge and pitch motion. It is assumed that the model parameters (except the sign of one of the control input coefficients) are not known. The uncontrolled aeroelastic model exhibits limit cycle oscillation beyond a critical free-stream velocity. Based on the attractive manifold, and the immersion and invariance methodologies, a non-certainty-equivalent adaptive state variable feedback control law for the trajectory tracking of the pitch angle is derived. Using the Lyapunov analysis, asymptotic convergence of the state variables to the origin is established. It is shown that the trajectory of the system converges to a manifold. The special feature of the designed control system is that the closed-loop system asymptotically recovers the performance of a deterministic controller. This cannot happen if certainty-equivalent adaptive controllers are used. Simulation results are presented which show that the control system suppresses the oscillatory responses of the system in the presence of large parameter uncertainties.

Opis:
The oxygen consumption of a sandy beach interstitial community was determined on four occasions (January, May, August, October) on the Gulf of Gdańsk (southern Baltic Sea). The study was carried out at four locations on the beach slope (littoral, waterline, splash zone and middle beach). Oxygen consumption varied from 158–159 cm3 O2 m−2 h−1 at the underwater site and waterline to 20–36 cm3 O2 m−2 h−1 in the middle beach. According to these data, interstitial organisms are able to utilize from 206 to 1641 mg of organic carbon per square metre per day. In general, metabolic activity decreased gradually from the waterline towards the middle beach, and a significant correlation was found between oxygen consumption and sediment water content. Changes in oxygen consumption on the beach slope were statistically significant.
