Opis:
In a certain stream gauge profile, consider the low flow flows determined with the POT (Peak Over Threshold) method. Each of the flows can be described by three characteristics – deficit, duration and minimal flow. Values of the three-dimensional random variable depend on the choice of truncation level Qg (threshold flow) – POT method parameter. It is typically assumed that the threshold level is included within the range from Q95% to Q60% (Tallaksen, van Lanen 2004). However, in computational practice the Qg value is determined at the level of either Q90% to Q70%. This choice is made mainly from the hydrological (not statistical) point of view. In this paper the influence of the threshold flow on the form of estimated distributions of each of the above three characteristics is considered. The following distributions are chosen: − GEV (generalised extreme value distribution) – while examining the distribution of extremes; − log-normal – in the non-extreme case. In each of the examined stream gauge profiles the following algorithm was used: 1. from the curve of duration sums, two flow values Q90% and Q55% are chosen 2. for each flow from the range (Q90%, Q55%), using the Zelenhasić method (1987), a three-dimensional sequence is determined of observed deficits, durations and minimal flow values; 3. for each of the one-dimensional sequences, the parameters of the above distributions are estimated. The variability of the estimated quantiles and their intervals of confidence were shown with the example of three gauge profiles – Kuripapango (New Zealand), Bogusław (Prosna) and Bystrzyca Kłodzka (Nysa Kłodzka).

In recent years, there has been observed a growing need for novel, multifunctional materials that would not only replace, but also heal the damaged tissues. In this paper, the titanium dioxide films manufactured by anodic oxidation method are investigated. The study of their structurization and antimicrobial properties of the coatings is presented. Samples anodized in water solutions of ethylene glycol exhibited various character -from structurized to porous ones. As the study revealed, all samples acted anti-adhesive in terms of bacterial (Escherichia coli) and fungal (Candida albicans) surface colonisation.

Opis:
Currently, studies on the formation of microbiological biofilm on biomaterial surfaces and medical devices have become an important aspect in medicine. In vivo studies of the biofilm development show a high correlation between the environmental factors and attachment of microorganisms to artificial surfaces. This paper is devoted to determining the impact of specific environmental stimuli and parameters of cultivation of Candida albicans yeasts on their adhesion to AISI-316L and Ti6Al4V substrates. Environmental parameters include variable glucose concentrations in YPG growth medium (0, 2, 4 and 10% wt.). Development of yeasts was also analyzed in terms of variable nutrients level i.e. transferring samples from medium with low nutrients level to other with higher glucose content. Another studied parameter was incubation time and how much fungal colonization varies during 24 and 48 h of incubation. For all samples, the number of both live and dead cells was taken into account. The results showed that with the increase in sugar content in culture media, biofilm development was observed, especially on AISI 316L surface. Also, significant changes in the number of adhered cells were observed with higher glucose concentration in medium after 24 h of incubation. Almost similar number of attached cells was observed for low glucose concentrations on both studied materials.

Opis:
Currently, there are more and more new materials (nanomaterials) proposed for biological and medical applications. They are, among other things, the effect of surface modification. One of the most frequently used techniques, fairly widespread, is plasmo-chemical method of diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating fabrication. There is many alterations of them, nevertheless all are characterized by short duration of the process and its economics. The final result does not require additional finishing treatments and the required coating properties can be controlled and obtained by selecting appropriate process parameters. Good mechanical and tribological properties, high corrosion resistance and its tolerance by biological systems have been documented in the literature. However, given the very wide range of applications of biomaterials found over time that the properties of carbon coatings are not always sufficient. The research conducting by scientific centres around the world have shown, however, that surface properties can be controlled by introducing specified elements into the DLC layer. Each of these added elements causes some properties change. Taking into consideration that we are dealing with biomaterials – the materials which are used in very harsh and demanding environment of a living organism, which also have a strong intra-individual variability, the solution in the form of material designed adequately to the needs of the individual patient is even more attractive and desirable. The DLC coatings doped by silver fulfilling constitute an innovative materials for biomedical application and are the subject of our investigations.

Opis:
Investigations of the biofilm formation processes on biomaterials surfaces are focused on typical physiologic conditions - aerobic condition. In experimental works onto model strains, and also in the clinical reports there is a lack of the information related to the mechanisms engaged in biofilm grown under conditions of limited access to oxygen or in entirely anaerobic environment. Presented results show the colonization of medical steel 316L surface and creation of biofilm structures by E. coli bacteria’s, under oxygen deficit conditions or its total lack. In studied arrangement the change of the dynamics of bacterium growth was observed, which led to considerable slowdown of the biofilm development. Bacteria were observed with use of the combination of fluorescent dyes - bis-benzimide and propidium iodide – which makes it possible the distinction of live/death bacteria. In oxygen deficiency and in anaerobic conditions multiplication of death bacteria level in comparison to standard conditions was observed (suitably 34% and 41% dead cells, oxygenic conditions - 1%). The limitation of oxygen utilization possibility by the bacteria, which colonized investigated surfaces also resulted in decreased sizes reached by the cells.

Opis:
In recent years, titanium dioxide has attracted a great deal of attention as a material for photocatalytic applications. These applications include antibacterial effect as well as photocatalytic air and water purification. Another property of TiO2 concerns a substantial increase of its surface hydrophilicity upon irradiation. The aim of this work is to investigate thin TiO2films obtained by RF PECVD technique with respect to hydrophilic and long-term bactericidal activity. Structural studies, carried out by Raman spectroscopy show that all the investigated coatings are amorphous. The films exhibit agglomerates, with their amount depending on energetic conditions of deposition. Adhesion measured by a scratch test shows that films deposited at higher RF power adhere better than those synthesized at lower power values. UV irradiation causes death of nearly 100% of Escherichia coli population on TiO2films. The irradiated films are still active for about 30 min after the end of UV exposure. A substantial decrease of water contact angle is also observed upon the irradiation of the films with UV light.

Opis:
The initiative to standardize compact (SPICE-like) modelling has recently gained momentum in the semiconductor industry. Some of the important issues of the compact modelling must be addressed, such as accuracy, testing, availability, version control, verification and validation. Most compact models developed in the past did not account for these key issues which are of highest importance when introducing a new compact model to the semiconductor industry in particular going beyond the ITRS roadmap technological 100 nm node. An important application for non-fully depleted SOI technology is high performance microprocessors, other high speed logic chips, as well as analogue RF circuits. The IC design process requires a compact model that describes in detail the electrical characteristics of SOI MOSFET transistors. In this paper a non-fully depleted SOI MOSFET model and its Verilog-AMS description will be presented.
