Opis:
On the basis of literature, the paper describes changes observed in Polish agriculture in 2004 and the following years, against the background of the situation in previous years. On the grounds of the above, eight theses have been formulated: on doubling agricultural income, on years needed for reestablishing economical balance disturbed by change of conditions, on increase of property size and modernization on farms of 16 and more ESU, on low profitability of equity capital in farms basing on high labour input and high capital resources, on growing range of agricultural producers who combine farm income with other incomes, on permanent deficit of part of farms of at least 100 hectares of cropland – in effect of legal regulations, incorrect definition of the areas with disadvantageous farming conditions and highly competitive potential of farms in Poland in comparison to the selected EU countries. The above theses require to be confirmed or rejected on the basis of analyses carried out in a long term (i.e. in the years 2005-2007), after Poland’s accession to European Union.

Opis:
The effect of soil drought on leaf water content, proline content, and the activity of guaiacol (GuPX) and ascorbate (APX) peroxidases as well as the level of lipid peroxidation were investigated in leaves of drought resistant red fescue (Festuca rubra) and drought sensitive perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne). Plants were grown under glasshouse conditions in soil pot culture. 26 day-old grasses were exposed to drought by withholding irrigation for 18 days. Water content in leaves of perennial ryegrass decreased more than in red fescue throughout the experimental period. On the other hand, proline content (PC) was higher in red fescue. The activity of APX and GuPX increased in leaves of red fescue, while it did not change in perennial ryegrass. Our data demonstrate that both red fescue and perennial ryegrass were able to survive applied drought, as shown by a lack of stress-induced lipid peroxidation and hence no evidence of oxidative damage. We speculate, that the observed drought stress tolerance at cellular level was associated with the ability to accumulate proline, and to maintain high activity of APX and GuPX, resulting in protection against oxidative damage and lipid peroxidation. It seems that this mechanism works better in red fescue.

Opis:
In forest research and nursery practice there is often a need to monitor the condition and responses of trees to different stressors. Chlorophyll content in leaf is a good indicator of plant health and can be measured rapidly in many repetitions using the chlorophyll meter SPAD-502Plus. This practical tool provides the values of chlorophyll content in relative units (SPAD values), therefore it should be calibrated for each species to determine chlorophyll content in physiological units. In this study, the chlorophyll meter SPAD-502Plus was calibrated to be used for total chlorophyll (Chl), chlorophyll a (Chl a), chlorophyll b (Chl b) and carotenoids (Car) contents determination in leaves of Quercus petraea and Prunus serotina seedlings growing in different light environments. In the same leaf, SPAD values were measured with the Chl meter, and then photosynthetic pigments content (PP; chlorophyll and carotenoids) was consistently assessed using a conventional extraction method. The measurements were conducted once a month from May to November in three light treatments to obtain the widest possible range of the PP content values. To estimate total Chl content in leaves using the chlorophyll meter the quadratic polynomial functions: y = 0.0374x2 + 0.5345x + 0.5137 and y = 0.024x2 + 2.1998x – 32.7866 were obtained from the relationship between the Chl meter SPAD readings and total Chl determined spectrophotometrically for P. serotina and Q. petraea, respectively. Chl was higher under shade compared with full light regime and Car were linearly correlated with Chl. PP content was positively correlated with air temperature except for Car in P. serotina leaves. It was concluded that at the same soil conditions chlorophyll content in leaves of Q. petraea and P. serotina depended on species, light regimes and temperature of growth. The chlorophyll meter can be used as a practical tool to monitor and compare photosynthetic pigments content in leaves between tree species or populations acclimated to different environments together with a control of abiotic and biotic factors affecting pigments content and leaf optical properties.

Opis:
Thermal degradation of the low density polyethylene (LDPE), polypropylene (PP) and the municipal waste plastics was investigated. The thermo-catalytic degradation of LDPE and PP was studied in the presence of the following catalysts: four different types of montmorillonite: K5, K10, K20, K30 and – for comparison – zeolites (natural – clinoptilolite, Y Na+ and YH+). Thermal analyses TG-DTA-MS of polymers and polymercatalyst mixtures were carried out in an argon flow atmosphere in isothermal and dynamic conditions. The following order was found: in lowering the reaction temperature for LDPE degradation YH+> mK5 > mK20 = mK30 >mK10 > NZ > YNa+; for PP degradation: mK20 > mK5 = mK30 >mK10 > YH+> NZ >YNa+. The activity tests were carried out in a stainless steel batch reactor under atmospheric pressure in a wide temperature range of up to 410°C, and using the atmosphere of argon flow. The liquid products were analysed by the GC-MS method. The hydrocarbons in the liquid products from thermal degradation of polymers were broadly distributed in the carbon fractions of C8 to C26 – for LDPE and C6 to C31for PP.

The paper presents the interpretation of a composite seismic profile recorded to 18 s TWT which crosses western Poland from the south to north. The interpretation is based on data along the profiles GB-2, GB-2B-96 and 25-III-82 collected between 1987 and 1996. Two reflection horizons bordering the crystalline crust have been recognized: in the top - SK, and in the base (Moho - M). The Caledonian complex is distinguished in the northern part of the profile GB-2 north of the Dolsk Zone. The results obtained allow determination of crustal structure down to the Moho. Several deep fault zones have been delimited (in the regions of Dolsk, Szamotuły and Trans-European Fault) which cut the entire crust. Crustal thickness ranges from approximately 30 km in the Palaeozoic platform up to about 40 km along the Trans-European Suture Zone.

Opis:
One possible way to improve the solubility of phosphate rock is by co-composting it with organic substances. Four variants of composts were made in a biomass composting bioreactor. Ground phosphate rock (GPR) and shredded barley straw, pine sawdust as well as beet pulp pellets were used as compost components. The four composts were different from one another in the type and amount of organic components. The composts were granulated in a pelleting press. Changes in the solubility of phosphorus were assessed via chemical analyses and P-recovery efficiency calculated from the data achieved in a pot experiment. Solubility of ground phosphate rock was increased resulting from co-composting with organic substances, which meant that bioavailability of phosphorus increased. All the tested composts were characterized by a higher ratio of ammonium citrate soluble phosphorus to total phosphorus than non-composted GPR. Co-composting GPR with all the tested organic components yielded better effects than composting it with straw alone. The four composts were characterized by a slow release of P, which justifies our expectation that they will produce residual effects in the years following their application.

Opis:
For ground phosphate rock (GPR) to be applied as phosphorus fertilizer, the availability of phosphorus to plants needs to be improved. One possible way to achieve this is by adding sulphur, which will accelerate decomposition of phosphate in soil owing to the activation of microbiological processes. This study involved granulation of fertilizers composed of phosphate and sulphur mixed at 38:1 and 10:1 ratios and two analogous fertilizer variants but with added molasses as a source of organic carbon for sulphur bacteria. A small-scale industrial installation for production of multi-component fertilizers was used to make granular fertilizer by the compaction method. The granular fertilizers were then tested in an agricultural experiment. The fertilizer in which the phosphate to sulphur ratio was 10:1 produced better effects. Addition of molasses to the fertilizers did not improve their fertilizing capacity.

Nurses are often obliged to work in a 12-hr shift work system. We have decided to check whether such a working system constitutes an excessive load for nurses. On the basis of a questionnaire survey among nurses working in an 8-hr daytime shift system (169 nurses) and in a 12-hr shift (536 nurses), the amount of physical workload, work stress, and after-work activities were compared. Data analysis has shown that a 12-hr shift system is characterized by less significant physical workload but greater mental load. The nurses working in a 2-shift system were more tired after work, but they could spend more time on leisure activities and do housework. The data suggest that there are no significant contraindications for nurses to work in a 2-shift system.

Telecommunication systems become a key component of critical infrastructure. One of the main elements of such systems is computer system. The organizations which can be involved in crisis management (e.g. government agencies, etc. ) need to know results of security drawbacks in their systems. Moreover, they should have a tool for analysing the results of decision made in security context. And often the following question is raised: why do security systems fail? To answer it in this paper the aspects of reliability are discussed. From this point of view the security systems are analysed. We hope that thanks to such approach we will be able to reach some characteristics of security incidents occurrence. Moreover, we hope to use our results to build security attributes metrics. In addition, we present thesis that predictions of occurrence of incidents is impossible, so we should focus on registration of incidents type. On such a foundation we can formulate conclusions about drawbacks in configurations or administration of information systems. In our research we have observed that in case of some class of information systems, the availability incidents are the most dangerous. And we conclude that only using technologies with good reliability characteristics can lead to solving this problem.

The analysis of the uncertainty of the determination of the noise source direction in the aquatic environment is presented in this paper. The type A uncertainty of the bearing algorithm was determined on the bases of multiple measurements of the hydroacoustic pressure by means of the TC4032 type hydrophones and the GPS device data. The influence of the non-linearity of the amplitude-frequency characteristic on the uncertainty of the determination of the noise source direction, was also described. The influence of water density, electromagnetic disturbances and irregular noises on the final uncertainty was determined. On the bases of the determined uncertainty components the uncertainty budget, of the determination of the angle showing the direction from which hydroacoustic waves are coming, was prepared.

Effect of growing media on macro- and microelements, as well as on chlorophyll concentration in Phalaenopsis orchids were investigated. In the years 2006–2008, an experiment on Phalaenopsis orchids cultivation was carried out. The plants were planted into New Zealand sphagnum moss, mixture of expanded clay pellets and New Zealand sphagnum moss (v:v = 1:1), or into expanded clay pellets only. Orchids were grown in translucent plastic pots. Total macro and micro elements concentration in leaves and roots were determined. Furthermore concentrations of chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b in leaves and roots were measured. Growing media exert a significant influence on the nutritional status of Phalaenopsis orchids. The highest concentration of magnesium, iron and copper was found in plants grown in expanded clay, less in orchids grown in the mixed medium and the least in plants grown in sphagnum moss. A higher concentration of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and manganese was found in leaves. Inversely, in roots, there was a higher concentration of magnesium, iron and zinc. Growing media did not affect chlorophyll concentration in leaves and roots of Phalaenopsis.
Do badań dotyczących wpływu podłoży na zawartość składników pokarmowych oraz chlorofilu w liściach i korzeniach storczyka Phalaenopsis wybrano odmiany ‘Springfield’ i ‘Zagreb’. W roku 2006 rośliny sadzono do następujących podłoży: mech torfowiec (New Zealand sphagnum moss), mieszanka mchu torfowca z keramzytem (v:v = 1:1) oraz w keramzyt o granulacji 8–16 mm. Początkowo (8,5 miesiąca) storczyki rosły w doniczkach o średnicy 7 cm, następnie w przeźroczystych pojemnikach o średnicy 11 cm i pojemności 0,5 dm3. Raz na dwa tygodnie rośliny dokarmiano pożywką o składzie: N-NH4 – 100; N-NO3 – 120; P – 40, K – 230; Ca – 30; Mg – 20; Na – 10; Cl – 20; S-SO4 – 40; Fe – 0,8; Mn – 0,4; Zn – 0,2; Cu – 0,07; B – 0,2 mg·dm-3; pH 6,6; EC – 1,8 mS·cm-1. W roku 2008 (stadium kwitnienia) w liściach i korzeniach oznaczono całkowite zawartości makro- i mikroelementów oraz chlorofilu a i b. Podłoża wpływały na stan odżywienia roślin – najwyższą zawartość magnezu, żelaza, miedzi stwierdzono w organach roślin uprawianych w keramzycie, najmniejszą w storczykach uprawianych w mchu torfowcu. Jednocześnie zawartość cynku i manganu była najwyższa w roślinach uprawianych w mchu torfowcu. W liściach stwierdzono wyższą zawartość azotu, fosforu, potasu, wapnia i manganu, natomiast w korzeniach magnezu i żelaza i cynku. Ponadto liście zawierały więcej chlorofilu-a i chlorofilu-b w porównaniu z korzeniami.
