Opis:
This paper presents a systematic decision making process for accomplishing product innovation in accordance with the target quality, i.e. the target values and relative weights of the relevant quality characteristics of the product to be developed, with the help of TRIZ (the Russian abbreviation of the theory of inventive problem solving). Since TRIZ methodology deems innovation as resolving a contradiction, the proposed approach first reveals the contradictions that block the target quality from being reached, based on the engineering solutions that the current base product employs and the phenomena that take place while the base product is performing its function. Then, the approach structures the contradictions and distinguishes the causal conflicts from the resultant ones. It also calculates the criticality of each causal conflict according to the relationships with the quality characteristics. These steps make it possible to properly highlight the focus of innovation within the whole function and mechanism structure of the base product. The proposed method is described using a die-casting machine as an illustrative example, and the example confirms that some innovative conceptual design solutions can be successfully derived through the proposed decision making process.

Opis:
We measured the Seebeck coefficient of P-doped ultrathin silicon-on-insulator (SOI) layers with thicknesses of 6-100 nm. The dependence of the coefficient on the impurity concentration was investigated, and was shown to be in good agreement with that of bulk Si. In addition, it was found to decrease with increasing impurity concentration, as is usual in semiconductor materials. However, for doping levels above 3.5x1019 cm-3, the Seebeck coefficient was observed to increase. This is likely to be due to the influence of an impurity band.

Opis:
Recently magnetic field effects on f electron systems in the vicinity of a magnetic-nonmagnetic transition have attracted much interest. In order to investigate the mechanism of field induced modifications in heavy fermion systems, especially in terms of valent degrees of freedom, we have carried out the X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurement on the newly discovered heavy fermion material $YbCo_2Zn_{20}$ which exhibits extremely large specific heat at low temperatures. Our results show that the Yb valence of $YbCo_2Zn_{20}$ is very close to +3 over the whole temperature range of measurement. Besides, no significant change in the absorption spectrum was observed up to the field of 10 T. This contrasts to the previously reported strong field dependence in the resistivity, followed by an expansion of the Fermi liquid regime with increasing field. The obtained results therefore lead to the conclusion that the valent degrees of freedom play a minor role in the strong field dependence of the heavy fermion systems in this compound.

Opis:
To evaluate the utility of high-resolution micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) in observing radiolarian fossils, we examined the skeleton of the Jurassic radiolarian fossil Protunuma ? ochiensis Matsuoka using a micro-CT device. Although this species is a closed Nassellarian with a thick exterior wall, important taxonomic characters on the interior and exterior of the shell were represented almost perfectly in the acquired three-dimensional computer graphic images. These characters include those documented in the original description, such as the height and width of the skeleton, the outline, the number of segments, the pore arrangement and other features. In addition, the structure of the initial spicule of this species was revealed newly. An enlarged plaster radiolarian model printed using the laminated modelling method was useful for detailed observation. Nondestructive omnidirectional observation is an advantage of this method, which is not possible with scanning electron microscopy or optical microscopic investigations. Micro-CT technology would become an effective observational tool for radiolarian studies in the near future.

Opis:
The effects of a microbial inoculant (Thervelics®: a mixture of cells of Bacillus subtilis C-3102 and carrier materials) on rice (Oryza sativa cv. Milkyprincess) and barley (Hordeum vulgare cv. Sachiho Golden) were evaluated in four pot experiments. In the first and second experiments, the dry matter production of rice and barley increased significantly by 10–20% with the inoculation of the mixture at a rate of 107 cfu ⋅ g–1 soil compared with the non-inoculated control. In the third experiment, the growth promoting effects of the mixture, the autoclaved mixture and the carrier materials were compared. The dry mater production of rice grains was the highest in the mixture, and it was significantly higher in the three treatments than in the control, suggesting that the carrier materials may also have a plant growth promoting effect and the living cells might have an additional stimulatory effect. To confirm the efficacy of the living cells in the mixture, only B. subtilis C-3102 cells were used in the fourth experiment. In addition, to estimate the mechanisms in growth promotion by B. subtilis C-3102, three B. subtilis strains with similar or different properties in the production of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), protease and siderophore and phosphatesolubilizing ability were used as reference strains. Only B. subtilis C-3102 significantly increased the dry matter production of rice grains and the soil protease activity was consistently higher in the soil inoculated with B. subtilis C-3102 throughout the growing period. These results indicate that the microbial inoculant including live B. subtilis C-3102 may have growth promoting effects on rice and barley.
