The drying process is one of the most important stages in the production of building materials. The choice of the drying method affects the chemical and physical properties of the final product. The aim of this research is to measure and analyze the dynamic changes of internal pressure in non-shrinking, porous material during convective drying. In this work the problem will be discussed with special attention to the behavior of rewetted plaster. A commercial gypsum of company PIOTROWICE II (Alpol brand), typically used in construction and decorative plastering was applied. Gypsum was mixed with water in recommended proportion of 0.6 water/gypsum and drying experiments were performed at 50°C. The changes in sample overall mass as well as pressure and material temperature on the midpoint of sample axis were monitored. On the basis of the obtained experimental data of axial pressure, it is possible to perform a more detailed analysis of mass and heat transfer mechanisms than based on the drying kinetics alone. The pressure trends in the sample allow one to determine the moment of transition from the first to the second drying period, without the need to determine the kinetics of drying. The element of novelty consists of using a direct internal pressure measurement to provide information on the variation of the actual drying rate and mass transfer mechanisms.

The aim of the study is to determine whether the development of selected communes entirely located in rural areas is progressing towards achieving integrated order in line with the concept of sustainable development. Detailed research covered typically rural communes located in the Lower Silesian Voivodship. Research was carried out according to 5 functional regions of rural areas of the voivodship. The research period covered the years 2011-2017. The research takes into account three orders: social, economic and environmental. Sustainable development indicators and the linear normalization method in the form of zeroed unitarization were used. In the analyzed rural communes of the Lower Silesian Voivodship, the indicator of striving for environmental order (E) ranged from 0.403 to 0.571, the indicator of striving for economic order (G) from 0.403 to 0.571, and the indicator of striving for social order (S) from 0.320 to 0.459. Finally, a synthetic indicator (SI) was calculated to determine the level of integrated order, which ranged between 0.370-0.452 (the lowest values were recorded for the 2nd functional region, and the highest for the 4th functional region of Lower Silesia). The synthetic indicator of the pursuit of integrated order grew, with the exception of the 5th region. Changes should be assessed as positive.
Celem opracowania jest określenie, czy rozwój wybranych gmin w całości położonych na obszarach wiejskich postępuje w kierunku osiągania ładu zintegrowanego, zgodnego z koncepcją rozwoju zrównoważonego. Badaniami szczegółowymi objęto gminy typowo wiejskie zlokalizowane na terenie województwa dolnośląskiego. Rozważania przeprowadzono według 5 regionów funkcjonalnych obszarów wiejskich województwa. Okres badań obejmował lata 2011-2017. W pracy uwzględniono trzy łady: społeczny, gospodarczy i środowiskowy. Wykorzystano wskaźniki zrównoważonego rozwoju oraz metodę normalizacji liniowej w postaci unitaryzacji zerowanej. W wybranym okresie w analizowanych gminach wiejskich województwa dolnośląskiego wskaźnik określający dążenie do ładu środowiskowego (E) wahał się od 0,403 do 0,571, wskaźnik dążenia do ładu gospodarczego (G) wynosił od 0,403 do 0,571, a wskaźnik dążenia do ładu społecznego (S) – od 0,320 do 0,459. Finalnie wyznaczono syntetyczny wskaźnik (SW) do określenia poziomu ładu zintegrowanego, który wahał się między 0,370 a 0,452 (najniższe wartości odnotowano dla 2. regionu funkcjonalnego, a najwyższe dla 4. regionu funkcjonalnego Dolnego Śląska). Syntetyczny wskaźnik dążenia do ładu zintegrowanego miał charakter rosnący, z wyjątkiem 5. regionu. Zachodzące zmiany należy ocenić jako pozytywnie.

The balance of major processes of metabolism is the condition of a continuous existence of the forest ecosystem. Each significant change of chemical balance in the environment brings about disturbances to homeostasis, quantitative and qualitative succession of individual components of plant and animal world, resulting in degradation of forest environment. The initiation of the continuous complex forest areas monitoring dates back to the 80`s when a sudden increase of forests` stands segments dieback occurred. The network of forest monitoring is based on the fixed observation I and II spots (SPO). Monitoring research may be extended to other substances not included in the Polish Act if the spot pollution source imposes a serious burden on the environment. It corresponds mainly to the areas situated in the closest vicinity of industrial plants which may significantly deteriorate the condition of the environment. The plants in interest include: heat and power stations, combustion plants, aluminum works, chemical plants, cellulose works, iron foundries, and industrial and municipal refuse landfill sites. The paper identifies main dangers posed to the forest environment resulting from emission and migration of polychlorinated dibenzodioxins (PCDD), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDF) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) – compounds commonly called dioxins. Mechanisms of biological activity of dioxins are insufficiently investigated. A sequence of unfavourable changes in organisms as a result of exposition to dioxins has been observed. Dioxins reach human and animal organisms together with food, as well as while inhaling and penetrating through skin. Dioxins damage living cells and as a consequence cause growth and development disorders of organisms. A symptom of dioxin intoxication in humans is chloracne (acne chlorica), characterized by disorders in both anatomy and activity of sebaceous glands. The acne symptoms are only signs which indicate a general intoxication with chlorinated hydrocarbons. The paper presents representative results of the investigation obtained within the confines of the introductory dioxin monitoring carried out in the selected forest complexes. Table 1 presents the results of the analysis of forest soil from unpolluted areas (the Antonin Forest Division - Czarnylas Forestry and the Gniezno Division - Orchówek Forestry) and a comparison with the results of polluted soil measurement collected in the vicinity of Warsaw where the earlierconducted investigations showed the general dioxin content at the level of 12.275 ng PCDD/F-TEQ/kg of soil. The carried out research proves that dioxins may accumulate both in soil and plants, and include them in food system. To maintain the chemical balance in forest areas the authors suggest covering a selected group of forest biotopes situated in the vicinity of major emitters of chemical pollution for dioxin monitoring.

Noise is one of the most popular environmental pollution. Long-standing residence in noisy areas can cause discomfort, problems with sleeping, neurosis, etc. Because of moving sources and increasing the number of routs, communicative noise is drudging on the huge areas. The level of noise emitted depends on the number of vehicles, as well as their types, speed and technical condition and also the type of routs pavement. Propagation of acoustic waves in the roadside area is stipulated by sound's source energy as well as characteristics of the emitter. Forest ecotone zones and roadside afforestation constitute a certain ecological filter buffering contaminations generated by traffic. Trees and shrubs growing in the vicinity of routs are able to reflect as well as absorb noise. They can form natural acoustic screen. The paper presents an assessment of the propagation of communicative noise on the forestry areas by analysis of variance. Researchers were carried out in the forest area, urban and park forests. Evaluation of noise propagation was conducted in January and July 2006. The measurements’ intensity of noise was interpreted according to model three-factor linear model as well as two-factor linear model. Measuring points were located in different distances away from the crown road (factor A). Researchers were carried out in winter and vegetation periods (factor C). The results obtained on forest areas were compared with those of nonforest control areas (factor B). For comparison purposes research was also carried out near the polycarbonate acoustic baffle. On the basis of analysis of variance it can be noticed that all null hypothesis of main factors effects are rejected in favour of alternative hypothesis at significance level α=0.01. It means that each factor influences on the level of communicative noise. The carried out research showed that the most important factor which determines noise propagation is plant cover. The equivalent noise levels were similar in both research periods in the afforestations situated in Złotniki, the national road 11 and Poznań, the Umultowska street. It results from the fact that the dominant species in the analysed afforestations was Pinus sylvestris L. The most significant equivalent level value decrease occurred in the 50m wide belt of the pine stand. The approx. 30m wide pine stand reduces noise propagation both in winter and summer to a degree comparable to the polycarbonated acoustic screen. The broad-leaved shrub-belt in the Sołacki Park decreased the equivalent noise level value (by approx. 5 dB) only in the vegetation season.

Metallothioneins are low-molecular-weight proteins capable of covalently binding heavy metal ions due to the presence of many cysteine residues in their sequences. We analyzed the predicted amino acid sequences of 19 metallothionein (7 from Arabidopsis thaliana and 12 from Oryza sativa) and their promoter sequences in silico in order to determine the potential regulatory cis-elements present in the promoters of metallothionein genes, from which it is possible to determine the putative functions of these genes. The PlantCARE and PLACE databases provided information about the putative regulatory elements in the metallothionein promoters. Metal response element sequences were found in the promoters of eleven O. sativa and two Arabidopsis metallothionein genes. Copper response elements were identified in both model plants, usually in many copies, particularly in O. sativa. Both the high cysteine content and the presence of metal response motifs in the promoters support the suggestion that metallothioneins play a key role in metal detoxification. The most common putative element in the analyzed promoters was CIRCADIAN, which was present in five A. thaliana and eight O. sativa sequences. The methyl jasmonate response sequence, root-specific expression element and drought response element were found only in O. sativa metallothioneins. Light and low temperature response elements, biotic and abiotic stress elements, an abscisic acid-responsive element and an ethylene-responsive element occur in selected metallothionein promoters of both species. A few promoters have putative organ- and cell-specific regulatory elements. The presence of many different motifs in the promoters of the Arabidopsis and O. sativa genes implies that metallothioneins are general stress response proteins with many important functions in plants, including regulation of their normal development and adaptation to changing environmental conditions.

This work presents the rates of characteristic and contractual flows of Mała Wełna river, including hydrological instream flows and environmental flows based on hydrological observations, hydro-chemical analyses and ichthyofauna structure accomplished in the years 2000-2010. The volume of instream flows were established according to requirements for the usage conditions of the Warta water region’s waters, while environmental flows were calculated by three following methods: Tennant’s, Tessman’s and method based on flow duration curves (Q70% and Q90%). Results showed that the environmental flow rates were significantly higher than currently required instream flow rates.
W pracy, na podstawie obserwacji i pomiarów hydrologicznych, badań hydrochemicznych wody oraz struktury ichtiofauny rzeki Mała Wełna w okresie 2000-2010 określono przepływy charakterystyczne i umowne w tym hydrologiczne: przepływy nienaruszalne oraz przepływy środowiskowe. Wielkości przepływów nienaruszalnych określono według wymagań warunków korzystania z wód regionu wodnego Warty, zaś przepływów środowiskowych obliczono trzema metodami: Tennanta, Tessmana oraz metodą odcięcia poziomów 70% i 90% krzywej czasów trwania wraz z wyższymi. Przeprowadzona analiza wyników obliczeń wykazał, że natężenia przepływów środowiskowych były znacznie wyższe od obecnie wymaganych natężeń przepływów nienaruszalnych.

We measured the angle-resolved ultraviolet and X-ray photoemission spectra of $UNi_2$ single crystal. The valence band angle-resolved ultraviolet photoemission spectra were compared to the accessible band structure calculations. For $UNi_2$ the lowest binding energy strong emission at about -0.1 eV comes from U 5f states and overlaps with the Fermi edge. A small feature at -0.6 eV was ascribed also to U 5f electrons with more localised character. The higher-energy two-peak structure at about -1.2 eV and -2.1 eV comes from Ni 3d states. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy shows the standard two-line spin-orbit splitting of the Ni 2p states and of the U 4f states. Some hybridisation of the Ni 3d and U 5f state was observed in the spectra. The pronounced satellites to the Ni 2p and 3p states, associated with the on-site Coulomb repulsion and other electron correlation energies, were observed.

Surface modification of Hydroxyapatite (HAp) and β-Tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) powders was performed using hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI) as a coupling agent. Polyethylene glycol (Mw = 2000) was grafted to the surface of these ceramic materials. Different methods were used to characterize modified surfaces. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and Attenuated Total Reflection Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR/ATR) technique analyses confirmed the modification reaction on HAp and β-TCP surfaces. BET isotherm analysis showed the changes in textural properties of materials after modification. Elemental analysis was performed to confirm a presence of selected elements from modifier and coupling agent. Examination of dispersion stability of materials in different solvents show better stability for samples of β-TCP than HAp.

The aim of the work was the economic valuation of the natural environment of ‘Góra Zamkowa’ in Olsztyn, which is part of the “Eagle’s Nest” Landscape Park in southern Poland. In the research, the travel cost method was used, which was based on the results of the survey. Primary sources were collected from 135 respondents selected randomly. Thanks to information from respondents, it was estimated that the economic valuation of environmental value of ‘Góra Zamkowa’ is approximately PLN 1.04 million.

Many species of Cuphea genus show promise as rich natural sources of valuable seed oils for commercial utility. Among them are C. lanceolata and C. viscosissima which seed oils contain medium-chain fatty acids. Reciprocal crosses were made between these species to assess their usefulness for Cuphea breeding program. The degree of crossability between C. lanceolata and C. viscosissima was determined by pollen grain germination and pollen tube growth observed using fluorescence microscopy in addition to capsule formation and seed number per capsule. Treatment of the pollen grain with a laser microbeam reduced the number of germinated pollen grains, tubes growth in the pistil and seed set when C. viscosissima plants were used in the crosses as a female form. In the cross C. lanceolata (female form) × C. viscosissima the pollen treatment with a laser microbeam improved pollen tube growth but reduced seed set. Crossability evaluated on the basis of pollen tube growth and seed set showed unilateral interspecific incompatibility in crosses involving C. lanceolata plants as a female form.
