Energy production and storage has become a pressing issue in recent decades and its solutions bring new problems. This paper reviews the literature on the human and environmental risks associated with the production, use, and disposal of increasingly common lithium-ion batteries. Popular electronic databases were used for this purpose focused on the period since 2000. Assessment of the toxicological and environmental impact of batteries should then have a holistic scope to precede and guide the introduction of appropriate safety measures. In this short review the authors will try to touch upon this complex subject and point out some important issues related to an unprecedented development of lithium ion batteries-powered world. Given the multi-billion dollar business with the risks associated with the development of new technologies requires careful consideration of whether the balance of profits and losses is beneficial to humans and the planet. Breast cancer management is important for both oncologists and plastic surgeons. We can observe a considerable progress in knowledge and treatment modalities in this type of cancer. Treatment often requires reconstruction of the removed breast. Modern methods are becoming better and more suited to patient’s needs. At the same time, we observe a steadily increasing interest in quality of life after medical procedures. This tendency is particularly visible in plastic surgery, where simple analysis of complication rate is insufficient. In order to effectively help, a scrupulous evaluation of the outcomes by the patient herself is necessary. The aim of the study is to discuss and present the use of BREAST-Q questionnaire. It allows to assess patient’s satisfaction with the breast treatment as a whole and medical care. In this article, we present BREAST-Q questionnaire scores in 20 patients following secondary breast reconstruction with DIEP flap without rib removal when accessing internal mammary vessels. The assessment of quality of life is necessary for the reconstructive surgeon to evaluate his own work. It enables deeper understanding of needs and better advice for future patients during preoperative consultation. The results can also be useful for payers in order to decide about reimbursement of specific procedures.

The paper presents data resulting by the preliminary experimental tests performed on a micro CHP (combined heat and power) 7 kWel unit. The engine load has been controlled by throttle position (quantitatively) or/and the value of air excess ratio (qualitatively) QQLC. By this way the engine efficiency can be improved in the range of partial loads by reducing the exergy losses during the inlet stroke. During the tests engine has been powered with LPG fuel. The engine performance together with environmental impact has been studied in this paper. Used method shows that despite the reduction of the load from 5.6 kW to 4.7 kW while burning the lean mixture, the efficiency of electricity generation increased slightly. The efficiency grew by approx. 1.41 percentage point comparing with the results obtained for almost constant load but obtained by burning the lean mixture (λ = 1.3), followed by increased throttling and combustion of the stoichiometric mixture.

This paper describes a semi-active control strategy that allows to transfer the vibration energy from an arbitrarily induced to a selected structural mode. The intended aim of the proposed control strategy is energy harvesting from structural vibrations. Another potential application is related to structural safety. In the paper, a mathematical model is first introduced to describe the phenomenon of vibrational energy transfer, and then, based on this model, an efficient semi-active control strategy is proposed. Finally, some problems related to measurement techniques are discussed. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology is demonstrated in an example of energy transfer between vibrational modes of a three-bar planar frame structure.
Niniejszy artykuł opisuje półaktywną strategię sterowania umożliwiającą transfer energii z dowolnej wzbudzonej postaci do innej wybranej postaci drgań własnych konstrukcji. Proponowana strategia sterowania może być wykorzystana w celu pozyskiwania energii z drgań konstrukcji. Inne potencjalne zastosowanie związane jest z kwestiami bezpieczeństwa konstrukcji. W artykule najpierw wprowadzony jest model matematyczny opisujący zjawisko transferu energii drgań, a następnie, w oparciu o ten model, przedstawiona jest efektywna strategia sterowania półaktywnego. Na koniec omówiono zagadnienia związane z technikami pomiarowymi. Skuteczność proponowanej metodologii pokazano na przykładzie transferu energii pomiędzy postaciami drgań płaskiej ramy portalowej.

Values of energy supply and demand vary within the same timeframe and are not equal. Consequently, to minimise the amount of energy wasted, there is a need to use various types of energy storing systems. Recently, one can observe a trend in which phase change materials (PCM) have gained popularity as materials that can store an excess of heat energy. In this research, the authors ana-lysed paraffin wax (cheese wax)’s capability as a PCM energy storing material for a low temperature energy-storage device. Due to the relatively low thermal conductivity of wax, the authors also analysed open-cell ceramic Al2O3/SiC composite foams’ (in which the PCM was dispersed) influence on heat exchange process. Thermal analysis on paraffin wax was performed, determining its specific heat in liquid and solid state, latent heat (LH) of melting, melting temperature and thermal conductivity. Thermal tests were also performed on thermal energy container (with built-in PCM and ceramic foams) for transient heat transfer. Heat transfer coefficient and value of accumulated energy amount were determined.

Opis:
Perceptive review of augmented reality applications in the forging industry is the primary goal of the paper. The differences between the Virtual (VR) and Augmented (AR) realities are highlighted first. Examples of the AR technology's various industrial applications are then presented, which is followed by the evaluation of capabilities of the approaches in the forging industry. The two practical case study solutions were implemented, and their operational capabilities under industrial conditions were tested. Examples of obtained results are presented within the paper.
W pracy przedstawiono przegląd wybranych zastosowań technologii rozszerzonej rzeczywistości ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem przemysłu kuźniczego. W pierwszej kolejności omówiono różnice pomiędzy technologią rzeczywistości wirtualnej (VR, ang. Virtual Reality) i rozszerzonej (AR, ang. Augmented Reality). Następnie przedstawiono przykłady zastosowań przemysłowych technologii AR. W kolejnym etapie badań opracowano i zaimplementowano dwa rozwiązania testowe wykorzystujące AR dedykowane dla kuźni i określano możliwości ich wykorzystania w warunkach przemysłowych.

Background. Today’s pursuit of high socio-economic status predisposes to low physical activity. Health promotion has an impact on propagating fitness clubs and active lifestyle. The aim of the study was to establish the relationship between fitness clubs popularization and the physical activity of Upper Silesian inhabitants. Material and methods. There were 200 questionnaires distributed among people aged 19–64 years; 150 respondents provided feedback for further analysis. The inclusion criterion was active participation in fitness club activities in Upper Silesia and Cieszyn Silesia. The data were collected by means of the authors’ own questionnaire. Results and conclusions. The main media factor influencing the popularity of fitness clubs was web advertising. Gym and group activities turned out the most common forms of exercise. The large age span of the study group indicated a growing interest in physical activity not only among young people. Most respondents noted a positive effect of regular exercise on their well-being and health.
Cel badań. Ustalenie związku między popularyzacją fitness clubów a aktywnością fizyczną mieszkańców Górnego Śląska. Materiał i metody. Osobom w wieku 19–64 lat rozdano 200 ankiet. Uzyskano 150 wypełnionych ankiet, które poddano dalszej analizie. Kryterium włączenia było aktywne korzystanie z usług fitness clubów na terenie Górnego Śląska i Śląska Cieszyńskiego. Do zebrania danych posłużono się ankietą autorską. Wyniki i wnioski. Głównym czynnikiem medialnym wpływającym na popularność fitness clubów okazały się reklamy zamieszczane w sieci, natomiast najpopularniejszymi formami aktywności – siłownia i zajęcia grupowe. Grupę badaną cechowała duża rozpiętość wieku, świadcząca o wzroście zainteresowania aktywnością fizyczną nie tylko osób młodych. Większość respondentów zauważała pozytywny wpływ regularnych ćwiczeń na stan własnego samopoczucia i zdrowia.

The paper presents the results of the bench tests to measure mechanical vibrations of a new aircraft opposed piston engine with reciprocating pistons. The PLZ-100 engine is a three-cylinder, six-piston, two-shaft drive unit with a two-stroke diesel cycle. This type of engine is dedicated for powering light aircraft, e.g. autogyros. The tests were carried out on a test bench at the Lublin University of Technology. The engine was loaded with constant torque, for several fixed values of rotational speed of a crankshaft. The angle of the start of diesel injection was changed for each of the rotational speeds. The mechanical vibrations that accompanied the operation of this drive unit were recorded with three measurement transducers and a National Instruments conditioning system. Each of the transducers was mounted on a different axis of the engine. The signals were analyzed from their diagrams with the DIAdem software. The results were the diagrams of effective speed and vibration acceleration to conduct a vibration-acoustic evaluation of the PLZ-100, detect and prevent various types of defects or failures.

Actions aimed at improving the energy performance of buildings increase the share of heat loss through thermal bridges and windows in a building’s energy balance. This is especially true of buildings currently under construc- tion. In addition, it is known that the correct installation of windows is one of the biggest obstacles that must be overcome in order to achieve higher energy efficiency and reduce the impact of linear thermal bridges. Therefore, the study analysed, numerically and experimentally, the energy properties of PVC window frames with improved metal stiffening profiles, which were introduced to reduce the risk of window frame deformation and reduce leakage caused by faulty installation. The value of the frame thermal transmittance coefficient and the linear heat transfer coefficients were determined numerically. The simulation results showed that filling large air spaces with insulation material allowed for the reduction of the Uf frame’s thermal transmittance coefficient by over 10%. Moreover, where the window connects with the wall, there was a reduction in the linear thermal bridges’ influence on heat losses. The reduction in the linear thermal transmittance coefficient Ψ was 9.6%, 1.0%, and 3.5% for the window sill, jamb, and lintel, respectively, compared to a frame without insulation. Moreover, experimental studies were conducted on the influence of the insulation of the PVC window frame with metal closed stiffening profiles on the linear thermal bridge located at the joint with the glass. It was found that the incidence factor Itb decreased by more than 6%. Thus, there is also a positive effect on the linear thermal bridge at the joint of the glass pane with the window frame.

The paper presents a comprehensive Reliability, Availability and Maintainability (RAM) assessment of the Water Supply Plant WULS-SGGW (WSP). The Monte Carlo method was used to simulate failure events of components in the technological process of the water treatment system. BlockSim application was used to perform an analysis. The reliability block diagram was used as a system modeling method. Reliability metrics were estimated based on 1000 simulations of 15 years of operation of the station. Simulations allowed the estimation of reliability metrics for the WSP, its subsystems, sections as well as basic elements included in the model. They also made it possible to determine which components are most critical to reliability.
W artykule przedstawiono kompleksową ocenę niezawodności, dostępności i utrzymywalności (RAM) Zakładu Wodociągowego WULS-SGGW (WSP). Do symulacji zdarzeń awaryjnych obiektów w procesie technologicznym systemu uzdatniania wody wykorzystano metodę Monte Carlo. Do przeprowadzenia analizy wykorzystano aplikację BlockSim. Jako metodę modelowania systemu zastosowano niezawodnościowy schemat blokowy. Metryki niezawodnościowe oszacowano na podstawie 1000 symulacji 15-letniej eksploatacji stacji. Symulacje pozwoliły na oszacowanie metryk niezawodnościowych dla WSP, jej podsystemów, sekcji, a także podstawowych elementów wchodzących w skład modelu. Pozwoliły również na określenie, które elementy są najbardziej krytyczne dla niezawodności.

The paper presents the methodology for designing the injection shaft drive for diesel engines with 2,3,4,6 and 8 cylinders as well as power from 2.5 to 52 kW per cylinder using the FEM method and experimental research. The pump is the original solution of the authors. The shaft is a basic part of the pump with a complex structure. In order to assess the state of stress in the shaft, the FEM analytical method was used and experimental tests were carried out, subjecting the shaft to torsional moment resulting from the transmitted power. Experimental studies confirmed the results of numerical calculations and the correctness of the adopted solution. The destructive tests were carried out to assess the maximum load capacity of the shaft, loading it with an increasing torque until visible plastic deformations occurred. This condition appeared at twice the moment (Ms = 602 Nm) in relation to the maximum predicted moment in operation (extreme operating conditions of the pump shaft). The theoretical studies confirmed very significant stress concentration (αk coefficient at the level of 2.63 or even 4.7), which may be the cause of fatigue cracks. It also determines the strength of the shaft and its torsional stiffness, which influences the proper functioning of the pump and ensures adequate fuel injection phases.

Background. The work is designed to uncover the pattern of mutual relation among trace elements and epidemiological data in the degenerated intervertebral disk tissue in humans. Hitherto the reason of the degenerative process is not fully understood. Trace elements are the basic components of the biological compound related both its metabolism as well as environmental exposure. The relation pattern among elements occurs gives new perspective in solving the cause of the disease. Methods. We have analysed trace elements content in the 30 intervertebral disc from 22 patients with degenerative disc disease. The concentrations of Al, Cu, Cd, Mo, Ni and Pb were determined with Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. To analyse the multidimentional relation between trace element concentration and epidemiological data the chemometric analysis was applied. Results. The similarity have been shown in occurrence of following pairs: Cd-Mo as well as Mg-Zn. The second pair was correlated with Pb concentration. Pb levels are observed to be competitive to Cu concentration. Cd concentration was related to Zn and Mg deficiency. No single but rather cluster of epidemiological data show observable influence on the TE tissue variance. Zn and Cu was related to the male sex. Operation with orthopedic implants were related to combined Al, Mo and Zn concentration. Conclusions. This is the first chemometric analysis of trace elements in disk tissue. It shows multidimentional relations that are missed by the classical statistic. The analysis shows significant relation. The nature of the relations is the basis for further metabolic and environmental research.

The article presents the results of diameter mapping for circular-symmetric disturbance of homogeneity of epitaxially grown InAs (100) layers on GaAs substrates. The set of acceptors (beryllium) doped InAs epilayers was studied in order to evaluate the impact of Be doping on the 2-inch InAs-on-GaAs wafers quality. During the initial identification of size and shape of the circular pattern, non-destructive optical techniques were used, showing a 100% difference in average roughness between the wafer centre and its outer part. On the other hand, no volumetric (bulk) differences are detectable using Raman spectroscopy and highresolution X-ray diffraction. The correlation between Be doping level and circular defect pattern surface area has been found.

Opis:
The off-label use of medicinal products raises many interpretation-related issues, not only among physicians, but also pharmacists and lawyers. The use of drugs in a manner other than that specified in the Summary of Product Characteristics is not regulated by Polish law. The authors’ goal is to discuss the topic mainly from the practical perspective, while also considering its theoretical aspects, and to identify systemic solutions to several problems, that are extremely important for the proper functioning of the entire healthcare system. The paper highlights that there is a fine line between experimental medicinal practices and those that are in keeping with current medical knowledge.

Opis:
Patients with ventricular tachycardia are usually treated with antiarrhythmic drugs and ablation if the arrhythmia substrate is available for invasive treatment. Despite high efficiency of this treatment there is a significant group of patients who do not benefit from available treatment methods, either because they cannot be applied or do not allow for durable control of the disease. For that reason a novel treatment method, STereotactic Arrhythmia Radioablation (STAR) has been proposed and its safety and efficiency is extensively studied throughout the world. The method is based on irradiation of the arrhythmia substrate identified with electrophysiological examination with high-precision image-guided radiosurgical methods usually used for ablation of malignant tumors. Here we present the protocol of the first Polish study on STAR in patients with intractable ventricular tachycardia (STAR-VT, NCT04642963), designed to test the safety of the method. Secondary endpoints include measures of the treatment efficiency.
