Opis:
On the basis of the internal heat balance of CI engine with direct fuel injection, the quantity of heat transported during the combustion process from the combustion zone was determined. The real indicator diagrams are the bases for determination of the heat release Characteristics during the combustion process and making up of the internal heat balance. These diagrams were worked out for the engine fuelled with diesel oil for three sets of the injection timing and for work of the engine according to the full load engine Characteristics, and the load Characteristics taken at the engine speedb for the maximum engine torque. Tests with the three different injection timing were carried out. Tests with the load characteristics of the compression-igniting engine for five values of the power were carried out. The pressure in the cylinder of the engine during combustion process was recorded by means of liąuid cooled a piezo-electric quartz sensor with a load amplifier. Characteristics of heat release depended on the composition, temperature and the mol quantity of the working charge in the cylinder during the combustion process. Characteristics of the heat release were determined with the use of the novel calculation program. The program was worked out by authors at the assumption that the process of complete combustion was finished at the moment of the opening of the engine exhaust valve. For purpose of simplification calculation of the quantity of heat lost into the cooling system, the radiation, dissociation and incomplete combustion, were assumed to change during the combustion process in a linear way.

Opis:
The contemporary progress of automotive industry and transportation is determined to a large extent by the increasing environmental requirements, aimed at limiting the harmful impact of vehicles upon human life and people’s health. A crucial issue linked with operating vehicles is the exhaust gases generated by internal combustion engines. In order to reduce this hazardous impact upon the natural environment, the construction of the engines is continuously improved, electronic controlling is being developed for managing the course of working processes taking place in cylinders and auxiliary systems, exhaust gases cleaning systems are being developed, alternative fuels are being sought for and the possibilities of their optimal use are being examined. Natural gas is the fuel that is highly expected and hoped to be used more widely for powering internal combustion engines in vehicles. This article presents the values of selected ecological indicators of the Perkins 1104D-E44TA Diesel engine, powered by compressed natural gas and Diesel fuel (CNG + ON). For comparison reasons, the engine was powered with both fuels at the same time and then only by Diesel fuel (ON) in the same working conditions. Before the tests, the powering system control unit had been calibrated so as to enable obtaining similar values of torque while the engine was powered with the Diesel fuel only and with both CNG and ON while working with external speed characteristics; the calibration was also set up to allow for the maximum share of the natural gas in the total fuel amount supplied into the engine cylinders without engine knocking. When powering the engine with both CNG and Diesel fuel, the concentration levels of nitric oxides and carbon dioxide in exhaust gases were lower. However, the total content of hydrocarbons in the exhaust gases grew multiple times, and the content of the carbon monoxide was significantly increased. In addition, the obtained measurement results of the smokiness of the exhaust gases and the content of the soot with the engine powered with two fuels were not satisfactory.

Opis:
Increasingly higher demands pnt on piston internal combustion engines arę aimed at reducing their harmful impact on the natural environment. This refers primarily to nitrogen oxides, particulate matter and noise emissions. The reduction in emissions ofnoxious components oj exhaust gases in engines is achieved by means of, among others, the use of catalysts decreasing nitrogen oxide emissions, particulate matter filters and oxidising catalysts decreasing carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions. Common Rail injection systems make it possible to increase the engine power, and to reduce fuel consumption, exhaust gas toxicity and noise produced by engines. With Common Rail systems, the pattern of fuel injection process can be designed, consequently the combustion process can be controlled. The paper presents the results of test bench investigations into a compression ignition 1.3 Multijet engine with multistage fuel injection, which is manufactured in Poland by Fiat-GM Powertrain Polska Company. The tests were conducted at a stand constructed at the Heat Engines Laboratory ofthe Kielce University of Technology. The scope of investigations included determining economic and energetic parameters of the engine work, and also environmental parameters, such as the concentration of nitrogen oxides NOX, carbon monoxide CO and carbon dioxide CO2 in exhaust gases, and exhaust gas smokiness. In tests, the engine operated under speed conditions and it was fuelled by two commercial diesel oils that had different physical and chemical properties.

The paper presents results of investigations and the assessment of multi-stage fuel injection in MultiJet 1.3 engine operating under load conditions. Basic work parameters of the examined piston internal combustion engine, such as: effective power, torque, hour and unit fuel consumption and the concentration of the most important noxious components of exhaust gases were provided. Tests were conducted at the test bench stand that comprised the engine under consideration, eddy-current brake by Elektromex EMX company, control and measurement unit to control the test bench and to take measurements of parameters of the engine and brake work, the measurement system for fast-changing quantities, fuel-flow and air-flow meters, and the exhaust gas analyser. During the tests, the engine operated under load conditions at the crankshaft rotational speed: n=l200, 1750, 2400, 3800 and 4200 rpm. Such values of speed were selected because of the multi-stage fuel injection and the engine's being able to reach the maximum torque M=200Nm at the crankshaft rotational speed n = 1750 rpm and the maximum power output N=90HP, delivered at n=4200 rpm. Application of advanced engine technologies and advanced control system allowed meeting high requirements concerning energy and economic as well as environmental indices.

The paper aims to present the results of investigations into the engine with Common Rail system that performs multi-phase injection. The scope of investigations included measurements and assessment of fast-changing quantities. The paper provides the research stand description and a block diagram o f the system for taking measurements offast-changing quantities, including the system measuring the intensity of the current that controls the injector operation. The experimental results discussed in the paper were derived from introductory investigations into measurements of the air-fuel mixture pressure in the engine cylinder and those of the injector needle lift, which were assessed on the basis of measurements of the intensity of the injector-controlling current. Tests were performed while the engine operated under external speed characteristics and under load characteristics at the crankshaft rotational speed n=l200 rpm and n =3800 rpm. During tests, depending on speed and load characteristics of the engine operation, the ECU performed different strategies of fuel injection. The fuel injection control system madę it possible to complete three injection stages in a single work cycle of the internal combustion engine (pilot injection, pre-injection and the main injection). The maximum fuel pressure in the common rail amounted to 160 MPa. The engine was fuelled by commercial diesel oil.

Opis:
The development of human civilisation has always been related to an increase in energy demand. The growth of transportation and an increase in the number of automobile vehicles in service produce a rising demand for fuel. Before piston IC engine is replaced with a different effective power source, it is necessary to use gaseous fuels on a larger scale than ever before. The natural resources of gaseous fuels are estimated to be much higher than crude oil reserves. Additionally, engines can run on biogas, i.e. gaseous renewable fuel. The use of gaseous fuels means lowering the harmful effect engines produce on the natural environment. Multi-fuelling, i.e. switching from one fuel to another, could be an advantageous feature of automobile combustion engine, both from the user’s standpoint and with respect to environmental concerns. Gaseous fuels have desirable properties that are especially suitable for fuel of spark ignition engines. The paper presents the engine test bench constructed at the Laboratory of Heat Engines of the Kielce University of Technology. The test stand comprises modern spark ignition engine Fiat 0.9 MultiAir and the eddy-current brake. At the test stand, the engine was converted to fuelling with three fuels, namely petrol, LPG gas blends and compressed natural gas (CNG). The engine could run alternatively on the three fuels mentioned above. The stand is equipped with an external unit to control the engine work, which makes it possible to extend the range of the engine investigations.

The angle of injectionhas a significant impact on the primary engine operating parameters and combustion process indicators, which include the proportion of combustion which occurs according to kinetic and diffusion models, heat emission rate and the combustion process duration. The characteristics describing emission of a relative heat quantity were determined on the basis of an analysis of actual, indicator diagrams averaged over 100 runs, under the assumption that the combustion process ends by the time the exhaust valve opens. During the test, the engine operated according to an external speed characteristic. Tests were carried out for three fuel angles of injection: 13, 17 and 21 crankshaft rotation degrees.

Fuels constitute one of the research areas within the scope of piston internal combustion engines. The works encompass both conventional as well as alternative fuels. Fuels are sought which will contribute to a reduction in the negative impact of transport on the natural environment and humans. These may be fuels obtained from organic raw materials of agricultural (most often) or forest origin. When it comes to compression-ignition engines, Biodiesel B100 type biofuels can be used to fuel them, which most often constitute a long chain fatty acid ester, made from plant oils or animal fats. The publication presents ecological indicator test results for a compression – ignition engine fuelled by SME Biodiesel, or sunflower oil methyl esters and commercially available diesel as a benchmark. During the tests, the engine operated according to load characteristics at two different crankshaft rotational speeds. A sunflower oil ethyl ester fuelled engine returned beneficial values for most of the tested ecological indicators as compared to a diesel fuelled engine. Concentrations of substances such as CO, CO2, unburned hydrocarbons (THC), particulate matter (PM) were lower in the engine emissions, exhaust smoke levels were also reduced. Only nitrogen oxides (ONx) increased.

The article describes the test results of the uniqueness of the work cycle of two-cylinder internal combustion piston FIAT 0.9 TwinAir engine, while being powered by 95 octane petrol fuel and LPG gas. The engine was working according to load characteristics. The engine mounted on the test bench was equipped with a sequential LPG gas fuel supply system. The gas fuels differ significantly from the petrol fuels in their physiochemical properties. In order to rationally utilize gas fuels to power internal combustion engines, the knowledge about basic fuel burning process of these fuels is required. The article shows the analysis of individual engine work cycles of the technologically advanced engine in order to evaluate the influence of powering by LPG gas fuel on the rate of uniqueness of its work cycles. The measure of uniqueness of the inter-cylinder processes are the work cycle uniqueness indicators, which are as follows: the maximum work cycle pressure uniqueness indicator, the average measured work cycle pressure uniqueness indicator, the measured pressure work cycle graph uniqueness indicator and the measured pressure work cycle partial graph uniqueness. The carried out research and its analysis has shown that powering the engine with LPG gas has an influence on the engine work cycles and its uniqueness. The burning process of the mixture consisting of air and LPG gas is quicker, which has an effect on the higher speed of pressure increase rate in comparison with the engine being powered by petrol fuel. Achieved maximum in-cylinder pressure values while the engine was powered by LPG gas were higher in comparison with it being fuelled with conventional fuel. This causes an increase of the gas lads on crank-piston system, which are influencing directly the piston with higher heat load, and the thermal load of the engine.

The paper presents the results of research on the impact of Perkins 1104D-44TA engine powered with sunflower oil methyl esters and, for comparison, with diesel fuel, in terms of emission of CO, THC, NOx and O2. The tests were carried out on the engine test stand. During the tests, the engine worked according to the external speed characteristics in the range from 1000 to 2200 rpm. The esters used for powering the tested engine were produced using the GW 200 reactor designed and made by Grzegorz Wcisło, one of the co-authors of the paper. The results of the tests carried out showed a decrease in the concentration of carbon monoxide in the exhaust gases, hydrocarbons when powering the engine with sunflower oil esters in relation to powering the engine with diesel fuel. At the same time, the concentration of nitrogen oxides and oxygen in the exhaust gases increased. The reduction of THC and CO emissions is the result of better combustion and afterburning of fuel. However, the increase in the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gases results from the fact that in the biofuel structure there is oxygen which is used in combustion and reduces the oxygen demand from the atmosphere. On the other hand, the increase in NOx emissions is the result of a higher combustion temperature than when the engine is powered by diesel fuel.
