Summing up, it should be emphasized that in the age of globalization it is impossible to omit the learning process internationalization, and there is no other way than to promote learning of foreign languages, especially English. Globalization does not give a choice, nor does it absolve anyone from the need to deepen knowledge and skills. Regardless of whether a given organization is a large university or a small non-public institution, each one must submit to this process in order to maintain the activities on the educational services market. Otherwise, such an institution will educate graduates doomed to unemployment which, in turn, will make it unpopular and sometimes worthless. Hence, university authorities should be open to inevitable changes and introduce innovative actions in this area.

Opis:
Purpose: The aim of this article is to present the results of research on needs and possibilities of implementing Lean Management concept at the university. Using the literature review and the results of empirical research, author proposes specific solutions (tools). Design/methodology/approach: The aim of the research was carried out on the basis of latest world literature review and empirical research conducted at a Polish university, the domain of which is practical education. The article is a case study with a proposal for the implementation of LM in a selected university. The research covered selected organizational units of universities. Findings: Recommendations for the use of selected Lean tools is the need to rationalize the activities undertaken in universities, including continuous improvement and flexibility of processes. There are economically justifiable actions to reduce waste and losses occurring in universities, as well as the integration of diversified and often non-cooperating organizational (functional) units. The proposals presented in this article may become an inspiration for universities that are thinking about implementing previously unused improvement tools. Research limitations/implications: Empirical research has been limited to one university, and the proposed methods and tools relate to selected functional areas. LM implementation requires prior analysis of the needs and capabilities of each organization. Practical implications: Due to the functioning of universities in an increasingly difficult to predict environment, they are forced to look for ways not only to survive, but above all to continuously improve the entire organization. The implemented rationalization and development measures should contribute to the improvement of the effectiveness and efficiency of management. Unpredictable changes concern the legal, socio-cultural, economic and economic environment, as well as the COVID-19 epidemic situation. These challenges are met by the concept of LM - as an inspiration and an opportunity to accelerate remedial and pro-development actions. Originality/value: The article is dedicated to people interested in the theory and practice of the LM concept. The use of the methods and tools proposed by the author in various functional areas of the university may bring about beneficial changes in the form of improvements in activities, time savings, as well as rationalization and greater efficiency of the implemented processes.

The paper aims to present theoretical and empirical research on investigating the optimization of university department management by preventing job burnout in university teaching staffwhich resulted in increasing their self-efficacy. The research sample was selected with the use of a non-random sampling technique. All foreign languages teachers invited agreed to take part in the study. To collect the empirical data from 205 foreign languages teachers a mixed methods approach was applied. The quantitative data were collected using the questionnaire on general self-efficacy created by R. Schwarzer and M. Jerusalem (1995) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (1996). The qualitative methods included observations and interviews. The obtained data were then analysed by means of Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS software). The authors theoretically substantiated and practically demonstrated the efficiency of the proposed programme aimed at optimizing university department management by preventing job burnout in foreign language teachers.

Opis:
The paper presents the diagnosis of the human resources management in Polish higher education institutions. The analysis of source literature was applied as a research method. The essence and components of HRM in connection with the university management system were discussed, the theoretical solutions, including those resulting from the provisions of the Law, and their practical implementations, were given a broad outline. The directions of changes concerning HRM that have recently taken place in HEIs were indicated. In conclusion it was stated that the human resources management in Polish higher education institutions still requires improvement, primarily in the areas of motivation and remuneration, evaluation and development of employees. It requires the improvement of the university management system, a reliable development of its mission, vision and strategy, and on the basis of those – the development of personnel strategy, and HRM processes, procedures and tools. It has been suggested that the inclusion of university employees, particularly the research and teaching staff, in the management process (through the participatory management style), can contribute to both improving the process and developing and improving the personnel function.

Purpose: The objective of the work is to develop and implement the original concept of Repository of Didactic Processes Data (RDPD) for universities. The task of the Repository is to handle formally organised content in a digital form, covering resources created in connection with didactic processes, and the origin of which is a university community. These data should be: as complete as possible, available on the Internet at any time and easy to find and retrieve, stored in commonly used formats, contain a clear indication of the stored resources, without any costs for the user downloading them. Design/methodology/approach: The concept of the Repository was developed on the basis of the results of consultations with the academic community - its primary target audience. Comments from the representatives of the Repository future main users were taken into account. An analysis of the existing available repository systems in terms of their functionality, adaptability to the specificity of data, and popularity was carried out in order to select the solution that could be the foundation for RDPD. Then, the following tasks were undertaken in the environment of the selected system: adapting the data schema developed for RDPD, the implementation of the operations of loading, browsing, and searching of data, and user management. Findings: As a result of research and analyses, DSpace was proposed as the basis for the RDPD system. The logical metadata layers as well as the technical implementation of the proposed Repository in the DSpace system were elaborated. Practical implications: The implementation of the RDPD system may significantly facilitate and support the university management process. Originality/value: There are many initiatives regarding institutional repositories within the higher education sector. However, there is no institutional repository dedicated strictly to the storage and management of data generated by university educational processes. The developed repository is the solution to the problem.

Purpose: The key driver to discuss the topic is a research gap as regards the management of SPEs and TTCs in the innovation ecosystem. Design/methodology/approach: The article discusses a university innovation ecosystem in Poland. It also provides a comparative analysis of the functional management models in the innovation ecosystem with the coexistence of TTCs and SPEs with: 1) separated management functions, and 2) a personal union, i.e. the same person managing TTC and SPE. The following research methods have been used: a participatory observation, a focus group discussion to analyse the collected research material and draw conclusions. Findings: The article presents major benefits and risks for TTCs and SPEs, benefits and risks that are related to specific management models applied in entities responsible for technology transfer and commercialization. It is not possible to indicate which of the two TTC and SPE management models is better or more efficient, since advantages can be achieved with both of the models, provided specific conditions are met. Those advantages are mainly related to the cooperation with the social and business environment of a university. Research limitations/implications: The recommendations contribute to a further discussion on the role of TTCs and SPEs and their relations in the innovation ecosystem, as well as efficient management and assessment of technology transfer institutions. Practical implications: The article provides recommendations for dealing with those risks in each of models identified. Originality/value: The article fills a research gap as regards the management of SPEs and TTCs in the innovation ecosystem.

Opis:
The aim of the study is to present the results of pilot study on academic staff direct participation (ASDP) in managing higher education institutions (HEI) (content, scope, intensity, practicality of impact), in key areas of its activity and its advantages and risks. The research was carried out under questionnaire survey method among academic staff of selected HEIs, in autumn 2018. It was found that ASDP applies to all areas of activity of these HEIs (content), primarily educating students; is full (academics participate in all stages of the decision-making process), has mainly operational scope (related to basic tasks in the position at work), less often strategic; it is perceived participation because the real impact of the respondents in managing HEIs is limited (passive form of participation dominates). The identified main benefits from participation indicate that ASDP can be an effective tool for creating commitment of academic staff in managing HEIs in handling their key areas of activity. The results presented are not representative (pilot study), but interesting. Therefore, the author is planning to carry out in-depth research on ASDP in managing HEI in the future.

The aim of the paper is to identify the loyalty management determinants of university alumni. As the pandemic has influenced all walks of life, including university performance and, as a result, the relations between the university and the alumni. The paper also addresses the impact of COVID-19 on selected alumni loyalty programs. The critical literature research was enriched with the analysis of loyalty programs of selected 15 universities under the EU-sponsored “Forge of Professionals 7” project, with the follow-up analysis of 2 universities during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, alumni loyalty determinants were developed. Managing alumni loyalty could be divided into three groups: alumni-based, university-based, and mixed. The most important factor influencing alumni loyalty is not the organization of alumni loyalty management, but the communication tools used by a university. The implementation of the results can bring numerous benefits to the universities: they can enjoy great flexibility in managing alumni relations systems. The university willing to strengthen alumni relations must take this from a strategic point of view. Establishing flourishing alumni relations is always a long process, requiring bold planning and consistent execution. Its value is a practical approach to the management of the relationship between a university and its alumni, and as such, it can greatly contribute to improving policy and practice in higher education.
Nawiązywanie efektywnych relacji z absolwentami to zawsze długi proces, wymagający odważnego planowania i konsekwentnej realizacji. Jego wartością jest przedstawione praktyczne podejście do zarządzania relacjami między uczelnią a jej absolwentami i jako takie może w znacznym stopniu przyczynić się do poprawy polityki i praktyki w szkolnictwie wyższym.

Opis:
Abstract: Aim: This study is on tackling Examination Timetabling Problem (ETP) of the Faculty of Economics And Administrative Sciences (FEAS) of the Ankara HBV University summer school, where the courses of fall and spring semesters are offered simultaneously and regulations on restricting enrollments in inter-department electives or in-department courses of distinct years are relaxed. Thus, the complexity of the nature of the ETP problem is exacerbated. The direct heuristics based on successive assignments that the university normally adopts was proven inadequate for assuming standard regulations hence, another approach we explain in this paper was needed. Design / Research methods: The ETP was formulated as a Linear Mixed-Integer Program (LMIP) and decomposed into three stages; timetabling exams, room assignment, student allocation. To manage the conflict between the stakeholders of the examination procedure, a lexicographic optimization process based on the priority of the parties was undertaken. Conclusions / findings: After a recursive timetabling process based on a trial-and-error method a clash-free timetable was generated and, a room assignment plan that minimizes the total number of proctoring duties, usage of higher floor rooms and total crowdedness of rooms respectively was put into action. Therefore no student group experienced any clashing exams, the faculty members saved time that can be spent on research instead, since the room usage was better planned the costs (elevator usage, lighting, air conditioning, the labor of the janitors) were assumed to be decreased. Originality / value of the article: Each examination period bares a different ETP due to its problem-specific nature (number of courses offered, structure of student enrollments, availability of rooms, etc.). Summer schools provide a more irregular structure that demands special attention, a trial-and-error reformulation of the ETP in our case. In addition, the traditional formulations of the ETP, to the extent we have been able to scan, do not include the minimization of the crowdedness of the rooms. Thus, in creating a more comfortable environment, easier to monitor exams and, ability in handling unexpected dysfunctionalities (broken classroom equipment, etc.) this study is novel. Limitations of the research: The algorithms to solve an ETP formulated as an LMIP are of high complexity therefore, we are not able to assert the optimality of our suggested solutions acquired within time limitations. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced higher education students to change their academic functioning, as well as the process of their social integration. This study focuses on the impact of the pandemic on student well-being, engagement and commitment to the university. It has also been revealed that females show higher commitment and engagement regardless of the country. Findings contribute to understanding student engagement during the COVID-19 pandemic.
