Opis:
Due to its complex and microscopic nature, genetics is a difficult subject for many learners to conceptually grasp. Graphics, animation and video material can be extremely helpful to their understanding. A wealth of educational online content about genetics has been created over the past decade in the wake of the human genome being sequenced. However, these digital resources are distributed across disparate sites and it requires a high level of content and pedagogical knowledge to orchestrate the progression and choice of material available to the learner, as well as technical expertise to bundle the resources in a meaningful and accessible format. A contextualised learning sequence, called ‘Gene Medicine’, has been designed in LAMS by the author, a student teacher who has a doctorate in human genetics, and who has undertaken a career change to teach science to secondary students. This paper reflects an ongoing professional learning experience as the author integrates her high-content expertise and developing pedagogical knowledge within the LAMS digital environment.

Opis:
Building professional identities of student teachers at the beginning of their vocational education and professional training provides opportunities to explore diversity of practice and provide external support. In the available literature, there is only a small number of studies that explore the professional identity of pre-service and student teachers. The main problem of this research is to examine self-reported attitudes toward student teachers’ professional identity dimensions. The second aim of the presented study was examining the reliability and concurrent validity of the Student Teachers Professional Identity Scale (Fisherman & Abbot, 1998), which was used for the first time in Serbia. The initial sample of respondents consisted of 158 students from the Faculty of Pedagogical Sciences. Results indicate that university students perceive teaching roles more as a specific job and not as a profession. They are goal-directed towards their job as teachers and perceive their practice as a part of their studies and not as a result of their professional identity development as teachers. The mentioned scale (for one-factor solution with the satisfactory criterion of confirmatory factor analysis) obtained very good reliability (α = .935) and concurrent validity indicators and values. Researching professional identity at early career stages can help educators to emphasize the multidimensionality and complexity of the teaching profession.

Aim. This article aims to summarize the current state of understanding on a development of a caring teacher-student relationship in higher education context, grounded in relational pedagogy. Also, it provides critical reflection on the data from available literature. Methods. The development of a caring teacher-student relationship was presented using the method of description, based on the review of relevant literature. Results. The development of a caring relationship between students and higher education teachers can be monitored in stages. At first, there is the introductory meeting with the students when a teacher with his personality, authenticity, and approach lays the foundations for the development of a caring relationship. During further meetings, the teacher encourages mutual trust, respect, and appreciation and deepens the relationship by adapting the teaching process to the needs, interests, and affinities of students, until the formal completion of their cooperation. Conclusion. In order to achieve a caring relationship with students in higher education, a teacher needs to approach it consciously, intentionally, thoughtfully and to plan it well from the very beginning. It is crucial to get to know the students as real persons, and accordingly, continuously adapt the teaching process to their needs and interests, allowing them to express themselves freely in a safe, accepting, and encouraging environment. Cognitive value. By presenting the stages of a development of the caring relationship between students and higher education teachers and the synthesis of their characteristics, this paper contributes to a deeper understanding of this phenomenon.

The quality of teacher-student interactions appears to be one of the most significant prerequisites for effective instruction. One of the factors involved in determining this quality is definitely teacher talk that should adequately correspond both to the type of knowledge the teacher intends to transfer and students’ ability to absorb this knowledge. The latter we claim is directly related to the students’ attitude to the subject itself and the teacher. In this article we will delve into the problem of euphemisms as part of teacher and student talk with a view to determining the extent to which they might affect teacher-student interactions. The issue of euphemism use and their role in building positive relations in the language classroom will be discussed from the perspective of teachers’ experiences. To this end, we chose the research tool of an online questionnaire addressed at university teachers. The survey was administered in June 2023 and the results will be described and analyzed in the forthcoming pages. Euphemism use will also be considered as a manifestation of language creativity that should characterize good language teachers.

The variability of university education is influenced, among other things, by the fact that in addition to students at the initial stage of their education, teachers also educate professionally active adults. They should, therefore, know which teaching methods can be successfully used for the education of undergraduates and of professionally active learners, and when these two pedagogical situations differ so significantly that they need to be treated differently. In this spirit, it is also necessary to approach the choice of teaching methods. During our course of Engineering Education (designed for academics wishing to acquire or extend their pedagogical skills) the method of concept maps has proven itself. In our research, we investigated whether the teachers perceived the education (in the subjects of Pedagogy, Didactics, Psychology) in which the concept map method was used as more effective in terms of remembering the subject, understanding it and applying it in their own pedagogical activities in comparison to the method of lecture with presentation.

Scholars all over the world have been arguing for foreign language instruction which combines linguistic and cultural content. Eliminating the cultural side results in a deficient process. This study explored prospective teachers’ perceptions of both constituents, since they will ultimately be responsible for their implementation in the foreign language classroom. To this end, 137 students from three European universities were chosen and asked to fill out an online questionnaire with Likert scale items. Data was collected and interpreted using the free statistics software package R (R Core Team, 2019). The findings confirmed that the relevance of linguistic / cultural issues was unanimously acknowledged (98,5%), speaking was appointed as the most desired target skill (97,1%), interpersonal relations (88,3%) as the most important aspect of socio-cultural knowledge, and lessons with native speakers (94,2%) as the most relevant classroom resource

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The goal is to point out the importance of establishing relationships between teachers and students in view of selected research, to outline the tenets of J. Nelsen’s Positive Discipline and to signal the ways of establishing relationships in the school classroom according to this method. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The main problem was formulated as follows: What is the importance of building relationships between students and teachers, and what are the possibilities of applying Positive Discipline in the school classroom? The research is based on the analytical-synthetic method, which was used to analyze the literature on psychology and pedagogy. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The article refers to research conducted in Poland and other countries that shows the importance of relationships in the educational process, and also indicates the theoretical premises of Positive Discipline as an educational method. I also discuss the implications of this method for school practice. RESEARCH RESULTS: Research done in many countries shows that good relationships at school translate into educational success for students. Children and adolescents are more willing to learn when they have a sense of belonging and importance, and when they feel that the teacher likes them. Therefore, Positive Discipline, which is based on the premise that teachers should develop children’s social competencies in addition to their academic knowledge and skills is worth implementing in schools to build a good atmosphere between students and teachers. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, RECOMMENDATIONS: Positive discipline is a method that is worth implementing in educational institutions when working with students of all ages. Recognizing the importance of interpersonal relations in the educational process, we should organize the space at school in such a way that it becomes a place where everyone satisfies the need for belonging and meaning, and where everyone has the right to make mistakes.

This paper addresses the phenomenon of school humor, focusing on the question of how it contributes to shaping teacher-student relationships. Based on an analysis of texts written by lower secondary school students, the paper shows that humor at school serves contradictory functions, such as harmonizing teacherstudent relationships on the one hand, and enabling power negotiation aimed at gaining superiority on the other. Analysis of narrative data has identified a specific phenomenon of festive humor. Within its frame, teacher-student relationships nearly always tend to be harmonized.

The 360-degree camera is a relatively new technology that might become an effective tool for the development of students and teachers and overall educational improvement. As “normal” video provides a maximum 130-degree perspective, it could not offer a complex capture of education. This paper presents a way to use a 360-degree camera during two different modes of trainee teachers’ fieldwork and proposes how to evaluate this form of education in terms of teacher-student-environment interactions by identifying the occurrence and duration of each type of interaction. It is evident that the type and intensity of interactions affect fieldwork significantly and may lead to different depths of learning.

The paper discusses the participation of the “Quality Education” goal of SDGs, “Personal, social, and learning to learn competence” of the EU Key Competences for Lifelong Learning, and four categories (the educator is someone who…) of the Competences for Educators in ESD in student teacher university training. It presents the theoretical explorations of relevant content to show possible options to be introduced to pre-service teacher training. Reflections about desired changes in personal and professional development are followed by the presentation of workshop outcomes realised with students of 3rd stage studies of pedagogy at the University of Lodz. Students have been developing their intercultural and sustainable development competences by creating stories with multicultural aspect and sustainable perspective. The paper refers to the application of the author's original learning method “Me and you towards sustainability” inspired by books of Robbins, What if? … (2008, 2018). The paper concludes that learning by creation gives more chances to understand oneself and Others.

Cooperative approach to teaching and learning

views on the experience of the integrated teaching
Opis:
The benefits of cooperative approaches to teaching and learning are extensively documented (Blatchford et al. 2003; Dillenbourg and Schneider 1995; Hmelo-Silver et al. 2013; Johnson and Johnson 1990, 1991 1994; Neber, Finsterwald and Urban 2001; Rojas-Drummond and Mercer 2003; Ruys et al. 2010; Sapon-Shevin 2004; Slavin 1995; van Aalst 2013; Veenman et al. 2000, 2005; Vygotsky1978), but in spite of this, such methods appear to be largely under-utilised in Initial Teacher Education (ITE) (Ruys et al. 2010; Ryan and O’Toole 2013). This often means that, drawing on their ‘apprenticeship of observation’ (Lortie 1975, 2002), student teachers tend not to use such approaches with children (Bąbka 2012), perhaps due to low self-efficacy beliefs about implementing group work in classrooms (Ruys et al. ibid) and so the ‘social pedagogic potential’ of classroom and indeed university-based learning is therefore unrealised (Blatchford et al. 2003). This paper reports the insights of a cohort of student teachers on their experiences of an integrated, cooperative approach to the teaching and assessment of Psychology and Sociology in Initial Teacher Education in Ireland. In spite of some challenges in terms of logistics, the findings are overwhelmingly positive, with benefits of cooperative learning including deeper and more meaningful learning than in individualistic or competitive approaches, greater application of theory to practice, stronger motivation and more enjoyment of learning on behalf of students, more integrated inter-disciplinary thinking, improvements in academic self-efficacy beliefs and self-confidence, and stronger critical engagement with material.

The aim of this study was to investigate the association between students’ gender and teacher-student interactions in a sample of Botswanan junior secondary school Physical Education lessons. Ninety-six lessons taught by male and female physical education teachers were observed, coded, and analysed for gendered interaction patterns. Chi-square test of independence was used for data analysis. The level of statistical significance was set at p <. 05. Results reveal a statistically significant association between students’ gender and teacher-student interactions with respect to task allocation and misbehaviour management. No significant associations were found between students’ gender and teachers’ questions and feedback. The study concludes that systematic observations of pedagogical interactions in physical education settings are necessary to highlight deeply entrenched gender equity issues in co-educational classrooms. Physical education teacher preparation programmes must impress upon pre- and in-service candidates the importance of and different approaches to enacting gender-sensitive instructional practices. Providing physical education teachers with contextualized pedagogical directions and resources for analysing and addressing gender bias in their classroom will equip them to create inclusive, interactive, respectful, equitable, and productive lessons.

Throughout the years. researchers searched for the definition of a good teacher. This article offers to learn from model educators, fictional and historical, how to define values, perception and practices which characterize good teachers. Four fictional teachers were chosen based on two characteristics: First, author’s descriptions that underline their good qualities as a person and as a teacher. Second, remarks from their  students’ and/or students’ parents or guardians, stating their acknowledgment of the teachers’ special qualities. and their gratitude for the learning experience they shared. A qualitative narrative analysis of these teachers – ‘Jane Eyre’, ‘Ann of Green Gables’ and his sequel ‘Anne from Avonlea”, ‘Up the down Staircase’ and ‘Goodbye Mr. Chips’ – defined five major characteristics which represent the exceptional teacher: holistic perception of the student, identifying and addressing students’ unique needs, emphasis on student-teacher relationship, creative teaching, a sense of mission and an inspiring personality. Examining the work of exceptional educators such as Ann Sullivan (Helen Keler’s tutor). Janusz Korczak, and Haime Escelante, reveals common themes which corresponds with fictional model teachers characteristics. Qualitative interviews with 14 Israeli rural high school teachers (7 homeroom educators and 7 subject teachers) emphasized similar characteristics of their role perceptions and practices. The key to higher achievements, educational and academic alike, lies in the hands of the teachers. If these traits characterize the ‘good teacher’ we should consider merging then into teachers’ preparatory and in-work professional training, as well as teachers’ evaluation processes. Let us learn from good examples how to become ‘good teachers’.
