Planning the frequency of rail services is closely related to forecasting the number of passengers and is part of the comprehensive analysis of railway systems. Most of the research presented in the literature focuses only on selected areas of this system (e.g. urban agglomerations, urban underground transport, transfer nodes), without presenting a comprehensive evaluation that would provide full knowledge and diagnostics of this mode of transport (i.e. railway transport). Therefore, this article presents methods for modelling passenger flow in rail traffic at a national level (using the example of Poland). Time series models were used to forecast the number of passengers in rail transport. The error, trend, and seasonality (ETS) exponential smoothing model and the model belonging to the ARMA class were used. An adequate model was selected, allowing future values to be forecast. The autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model follows the tested series better than the ETS model and is characterised by the lowest values of forecast errors in relation to the test set. The forecast based on the ARIMA model is characterised by a better detection of the trends and seasonality of the series. The results of the present study are considered to form the basis for solving potential rail traffic problems, which depend on the volume of passenger traffic, at the central level. The methods presented can also be implemented in other systems with similar characteristics, which affects the usability of the presented solutions.

Digitisation of transport is a tool for achieving the European Union’s political goals included in the Digital Single Market Strategy for Europe. For rail transport, digital innovation is required to increase its competitiveness. One of the tools of the digital transformation of railways is 5G networks, the fifth generation of wireless communication systems. The purpose of this article is to present the benefits of implementing 5G network for railway operators. Focus was placed on its innovative features, such as ultra-fast access to Internet services, very high connection reliability, and extremely low data transmission delays. Examples of new services for railway operators based on the capabilities of 5G networks were presented. This article describes the unique functions of the 5G network in which resources can be flexibly allocated depending on current traffic needs thanks to the network slicing function, e.g., for services of key importance to rail traffic and commercial services for other market segments. Roadmap proposals for transforming the current rail communication network infrastructure towards the target FRMCS system are presented. The analysis was based on source materials from Nokia Corporation, available literature, EU documents and regulations, as well as institutional studies of the railway sector.

Artykuł jest poświęcony podróżowaniu koleją z Krakowa do Wiednia w drugiej połowie XIX wieku. Omówione są w nim warunki podróżowania. Autorzy charakteryzują parametry obiektywne i subiektywne oceny jakości podróżowania pociągiem w XIX wieku, a także omawiają kryteria oceny: bezpieczeństwo, jazdę, komfort, estetykę, szacunek do pasażera, relacje społeczne, koszty – w kontekście ograniczonej literatury dotyczącej opinii ówczesnych pasażerów na temat jakości podróży. W artykule omówione są różnice podróżowania w różnych klasach pociągów. W podsumowaniu stwierdzono, że podróż pociągami w drugiej połowie XIX wieku była wolna w porównaniu do dzisiejszych realiów. Pomimo tego czynnikiem obniżającym komfort podróży była obawa przed dużą prędkością pociągu i ryzykiem związanym z silnikiem parowym. Pomimo ryzyk i niedogodności oraz opóźnień pociągów, podróżowanie koleją z Wiednia do Krakowa i odwrotnie było znacznie korzystniejsze niż powozem.
The article is devoted to travelling by railway from Krakow to Vienna in the second part of 19th century. Conditions of the travelling are described in the article. The authors make characteristics of objective and subjective parameters of the assessment of the journey quality by the train in the 19th century and also discuss criteria for the assessment: safety, flow, comfort, aesthetics, respect, social climate and costs – in the light of limited sources on the opinions of passengers about journey quality. In the article the differences of travel in different classes of train compartments. In the summary it was noted that travelling by railway in the 19th century was slow comparing to nowadays. Despite this there was the speed which was perceived as uncomfortably high. Despite risk and uncomfortable aspects and delays of trains travelling by railway compared to using the coach from Vienna to Krakow, or vice versa was a huge improvement.

The north-eastern region of India presents intra-regional disparity, which is reflected in every aspect of development. The transport sector, especially railway transportation, is one of the important aspects, and the development of railway infrastructure seems to be very different in every region. The research question addressed in this study was “Which factors, geo-physical or socio-economic, influenced the variation in the level of railway development in Northeast India?” The aim of the study was to delineate regional differentiation on railway development in Northeast India and to analyse the reasons for different development patterns of railway lines among the north-eastern states. The research was based on secondary data collected from multiple sources, and the existing synthetic indicator was applied for the classification of eight states based on their railway infrastructural status. An alternative approach called the alternative synthetic indicator has been proposed and found to be more efficient than the existing synthetic indicator. The degree of inequality among the northeastern states by considering railway infrastructural variables was measured by plotting a Lorenz curve; the corresponding Gini coefficient specifies the unequal distribution of railway infrastructure among all the northeastern states. The causality of such unequal development has been analysed through a correlation test by defining the composite dimension index. The analysis revealed that all the externalities of regional inequality significantly influence the development of railway lines in northeastern states. Environmental determinism plays a crucial role in railway development in Northeast India, but political willingness is also crucial for creating an actual state of differentiation and will play a special role in the future.

The article reviews and describes the problems of the railway point heating conventional control system considering its structure, simple design, disadvantages and nonconformity. As a solution to the described problem, an innovative and advanced point heating control algorithm is proposed based on Mathlab’s Fuzzy Logic Designer module, which will allow control of heating more effectively and intellectually. The tasks for the advanced and intellectual point heating control system were set. The interdependency of different input variables and their weights of the proposed algorithm are shown and described. Conclusions show that the approach of introducing a control algorithm based on Fuzzy Logic will allow to control point heating in a more advanced and efficient way -switching on and off based on the interdependency of different weather conditions and eather forecast; the input data control system will decide automatically when to switch the heating on and off.

The article presents the scope of the project proposed, and the description of activities aimed at precising this scope. The project is aimed at defining the technical and functional brief fore design, preparation of the documentation, and implementation of the monitoring system (demonstrator) at the selected railway border crossing in Poland. The basic function of the monitoring system, supporting protection of an extensive area of a RBC (called „MoRA System” or „MoRA Demonstrator”), is automatic, continuous and intelligent Monitoring of Railway border crossing Area i.e. part of a railway line between a state border and a border railway station, an area of a railway station itself, and if necessary – adjoining areas. MoRA System will ensure implementation of current possibilities in automation of the system operation, and maximal inclusion of an infrastructure (telecom and IT networks) currently being operated, and data possible to be collected from systems in exploitation [2]. The scope of the MoRA System project will include also a technical infrastructure for data collection from monitoring devices, registration of it, and selected transfer to services and bodies interested. The future user will have a full disposal to the technical solutions with an option of adjustment, maintenance and training. The MoRA System will ensure security of RBC area, with a continuity, reliability and complexity of supervision at the level unavailable for traditional methods of monitoring.
W artykule przedstawiono zakres, proponowanego do realizacji, projektu badawczego i opisano działania zmierzające do sprecyzowania jego zakresu. Celem projektu ma być sformułowanie założeń techniczno-funkcjonalnych, opracowanie dokumentacji i wykonanie systemu monitoringu (demonstratora na poziomie co najmniej TRL6 według Narodowego Centrum Badań i Rozwoju w Warszawie) na wybranym kolejowym przejściu granicznym. Podstawową funkcją projektowanego systemu monitoringu wspierającego ochronę na rozległym obszarze kolejowego przejścia granicznego („Systemu MOP” lub „Demonstratora MOP”) jest automatyczne, ciągłe w czasie i inteligentne Monitorowanie Obszaru Przejścia granicznego, tj. odcinka linii kolejowej od granicy państwowej do stacji granicznej oraz obszaru stacji granicznej i ewentualnie wybranych obszarów przyległych. System MOP wykorzysta perspektywiczne techniki oraz technologie elektroniczne i telekomunikacyjne w celu zapewnienia poufnego przesyłu wiarygodnych danych pozyskanych z monitoringu terenu (obiektów) obserwacji [2]. Zamierza się wykorzystać obecną infrastrukturę techniczną i rozbudować ją o konieczne elementy renomowanych producentów sprzętu i oprogramowania. Przyszłościowy Gestor będzie dysponował pełnym dostępem do zastosowanych rozwiązań technologicznych z opcją skalowalności i utrzymania oraz szkoleń. System MOP zapewni ochronę obszaru kolejowego przejścia granicznego, gwarantując ciągłość, niezawodność i kompleksowość ochrony na poziomie nieosiągalnym dla rozwiązań tradycyjnych.

Many definitions of “sustainable development” can be found in the literature. As some sources say the most frequently quoted definition is given in the Brundtland Report. It de-fines sustainable development as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Sustainable devel-opment understood in that sense contains two key concepts: the concept of needs and the idea of limitations. The first one is truly important, however the second one seems to be more relevant here. The need to ensure the safety of today and the future generations is one of the needs to be assured in the framework of sustainable development. Giving the fact that the assurance may be achievable with the imposed restrictions – for example the impact on the environment – the issues related to transport arise in mind as some of rather “obvious” suggestions. Realisation of the need to ensure the safety concerns of the inte-grated transport system as such, but the need realisation should be related primarily to infra-structure and means of transport. Mode of transport which seems to be the least harm to the natural environment is railroad transport. Therefore the example of this type of execu-tion which is Rail Vehicle’s and Rail Track Monitoring System is considered in the paper. It will be the main subject matter of the paper.
W literaturze przedmiotu znaleźć można wiele definicji zrównoważonego rozwoju, niemniej jednak najczęściej cytowaną definicją wydaje się być ta pochodząca z Raportu Brundtlanda. Według niej zrównoważony rozwój to taki w którym potrzeby obecnego pokolenia mogą być zaspokojone bez umniejszania szans przyszłych pokoleń na ich zaspokojenie. W tym kontek-ście zrównoważony rozwój zawiera dwa kluczowe pojęcia: koncepcje podstawowych potrzeb oraz idee ograniczonych możliwości. Mimo, że oba pojęcia mają nader istotne znaczenie, to jednak w kontekście niniejszego artykułu idea ograniczonych możliwości odgrywa ważną rolę. To właśnie konieczność zapewnienia bezpieczeństwa obecnym, ale również przyszłym poko-leniem ma niebagatelne znaczenie w kontekście zrównoważonego rozwoju. Zważywszy na fakt, że wspomniane bezpieczeństwo może być wypracowane poprzez nałożenie restrykcji m.in. dotyczących oddziaływania na środowisko, kwestie związane z transportem narastajądo rangi oczywistych sugestii. Bez wątpienia zapewnienie bezpieczeństwa związane jest z wdrożeniem systemu zintegrowanego transportu, tym niemniej zagwarantowanie bezpie-czeństwa powinno być związane przede wszystkim infrastrukturą oraz środkami transportu. W tym kontekście środkiem transportu, który wydaje się być najmniej szkodliwy dla środowi-ska naturalnego jest transport kolejowy, dlatego przykładem zapewnienia zasady bezpieczeń-stwa jest wprowadzenie Systemu monitorowania układu pojazd szynowy-tor. System ten bę-dzie głównym przedmiotem zainteresowania niniejszego opracowania.

The architectural and urban development factors of the towns’ railway complexes are considered. The study boundaries are defined by the category of cities with a population up to 50 thousand inhabitants. It is shown that railway complexe for such cities is one of the most important cities’ forming object and a nodal element of the transport and communication network for various hierarchical levels of town-planning space.Thus, it is confirmed that urban development factors have a hierarchical structure. The analysis of these factors allowed to formulate the basic principles of the development of towns’ railway complexes, outline the parameters of their development by the degree of spatial consolidation within the limits of the complex's influence.
W artykule rozpatrzono architektoniczno-urbanistyczne czynniki rozwoju dworcowych kompleksów kolejowych małych miast (liczbą ludności poniżej 50 tys. Mieszkańców). Pokazano, że dworcowe kompleksy kolejowe dla takich miast są jednym z najważniejszych elementów kształtujących miasto oraz węzłowym elementem sieci transportowej różnych hierarchicznych poziomów przestrzeni urbanistycznej. W związku z tym urbanistyczne czynniki wpływu na kształtowanie dworcowych kompleksów kolejowych mają strukturę hierarchiczną. Analiza tych czynników pozwoliła sformułować główne zasady architektoniczno-urbanistycznej organizacji takich kompleksów, zarysować przestrzenne parametry ich rozwoju.

The article discusses the development of the Italian railways between 2002 and 2015, taking into account the investment expenditure allocated to the growth of this transport mode in the period under investigation, as well as within a time horizon extending until 2026. The research has been complemented by an analysis of economic conditions. The paper describes the organizational structure of the Italian national railways, namely, the FS Group and its subsidiary companies, which manage the different sectors of the supply chain, rendering various services and supporting the activities undertaken across the group. Specific trends observed in passenger and cargo transport are analysed, with highspeed railway services given special consideration.

Railway yard is the basic composition unit of railways, therefore, the efficiency and quality of railway yard design have a crucial effect on the construction and operation of railways. Plane design is the basis and core of railway yard design, consequently, it is significant to research plane design of railway yard. In this study, through analysis and summary of the research status as well as integrated application of computer technology and railway yard plane design methods, we researched and developed railway yard plane design system based on AutoCAD platform. According to the characteristics of railway yard plane design, we constructed the information model based on which we established specialized database, with the information data organized and managed efficiently; moreover, we put forward methods of constructing geometric models of the plane equipment, meanwhile, we did a focused research on associated design of yard equipment and preliminarily realized linkage design of planar yards.

The paper presents the history of the Ethiopian railway from its beginnings up to now. Its main aims are to inform the reader about the role that Franco-Ethiopian railway played in the economic and social development of that African country. The Ethiopian railway also played a significant role in the political relations between the Empire and the Western powers. In this article the rolling stock of the Ethiopian railway is described thoroughly, which is often overlooked in other publications. The fate of the Ethiopian railway is examined against a background of the crucial historical events in Ethiopia so that the reader could understand not only the factors that contributed to its length and equipment but also its function in the Ethiopian economy and in changing the social relations among the Ethiopian nations.
