Exhaust gases with high SO2 concentrations are emitted from combustion of high sulphur fossil fuels and from different industrial processes (e.g. copper smelter and sintering plants). The application of the electron beam process for SO2 and NOx removal from such flue gases was investigated. A parametric study was carried out to determine the SO2 and NOx removal efficiency as a function of temperature and humidity of irradiated gases, absorbed dose and ammonia stoichiometry. The efficiency 90–95% of SO2 removal was obtained in the optimal treatment conditions with an inlet SO2 concentration of up to 15% vol. The synergistic effect of high SO2 content on NOx removal was indicated. The collected by-product was a mixture of ammonium sulphate and nitrate. The content of heavy metals in the by- -products was many times lower than the values accepted for commercial fertilizers.

In this work non-combustible gases impact on combustion processes studies is performed. Research was performed in a optically accessible rapid compression machine (RCM) under spark ignition engine conditions. The distribution of the swirl charge in the relation to adopted for analysis sequence of gas delivery to the chamber was varied with regard to the main injection. Authors investigate the influence of these sequence on the combustion and the ignition delay of the main injection and the overall combustion characteristics. The aim of this work is the experimental recognition of possibilities of creating combustible mixtures of light hydrocarbon fuels surrounded by non-combustible gases affecting the function of the inhibitor. Specifying the ability of preparation and combustion of mixtures in such systems enables the scientifl analysis of adiabatization of the combustion process of fuel-air mixtures in the operating chambers. Theoretical analysis of the issues indicates possibility of obtaining such a stratification of the charge, that the inactive exhaust gases creating the outer ring surround the combustible mixture inside in such a way as to reduce the amount of heat exchanged between the working medium and the walls of the cylinder.

Maintaining a stable carbon dioxide content in the process of producing breathing air is important both for the safety of divers performing underwater work and for avoiding financial losses resulting from poor product quality. This paper deals with the implementation of safety measurement systems for online control of the breathing air production process. On the basis of a qualified control system, the capability of the rationalised process was assessed, identifying both its current status and its potential for improvement in terms of eliminating defects caused by excessive carbon dioxide content. For process reasons, the effectiveness of online process monitoring was evaluated against the previously used periodic sample control by means of laboratory methods of instrumental analysis. The analysis was conducted at KTPP AMW1 for the compressed air supply system of the DGKN - 1202 complex.

The removal of organic pollutants from ship emission was studied using two processes namely electron beam (EB) and hybrid EB with wet scrubbing process. A mobile accelerator unit was used to treat 4915 Nm3 /h of flue gas emitted from a tugboat in Riga Shipyard. A volume of 3 m3 seawater containing 36.8 mM of NaClO2 oxidant was used as a wet scrubber solution. Organic pollutants, mainly volatile organic pollutants (VOCs), were collected at three different sampling points, before and after irradiation vessels, and after wet-scrubber unit, respectively. They were collected with glass sampling bottles, tedlar bags, Coconut Shell Charcoal (CSC) sorbents and XAD-2 sorbents. CH3OH and CH3OH/CH2Cl2 (1:1) were used to extract VOCs from CSC and XAD-2 sorbents, respectively. Syringe filters were used to obtain the solid-free extraction solutions. They were concentrated using a micro-extractor under continuously blowing high-purity Ar. A gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used for analysis. The identified organic compounds were: aliphatic hydrocarbons (dodecane C12H26 to eicosane C20H42), aromatic hydrocarbon (toluene), esters (C3H7COOCH3, (C4H9OCO)2C6H4), nitro compounds (C3H5NO3, C4H7NO2) and acid (C7H15COOH). After 4.2 kGy EB irradiation, around 50–100% aliphatic hydrocarbons, 83% toluene and 7.5% (C4H9OCO)2C6H4 were removed from the off-gases, and after EB hybrid wet-scrubber process, most organic compounds including nitro compounds were removed. Only trace amount of toluene, hexadecane, octadecane and dibutyl phthalate were found to be present in the gas phase.

The innovative technology, like thermal spraying with a micro-jet cooling is one of the important modification of classical ultrasonic spraying methods. Using of micro-stream with gases like argon or nitrogen allows to cool the coating immediately after spraying, and thereby reduce the time of transition during the injection of each layer. As a result of the process, the fine dispersive structure of coatings is obtained during the shorter time in comparable to the classical high velocity oxygen fuel process (HVOF). The parameter of process and the type of stream equipment determine the quality of the obtained structure and thermal stress in the coating. The article presents the relationship between selected parameters of hybrid process and properties of the coatings. The presented technology should be adapted to the actual production of protective coating for machines and construction working in wear conditions.

The aim of the research is to test the fuel additives which decrease dimensions of atomised fuel drops, by applying changes to the specific parameters which impact the atomisation process. Those parameters include density, surface tension, viscosity and the viscosity index. Dimensions of drops of biofuels are much bigger compared to hydrocarbon fuels. By modifying the physical and chemical parameters of biofuels, dimensions of drops in an atomised fuel stream should become smaller. Those dimensions play a major role for the level of emissions of hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide, as well as mainly nitrogen oxides and particulates. The research on emissions of toxic components of fuel is relatively advanced today in the field of piston combustion engines, especially for use in car vehicles. However, the dynamic development of the air transport brings more pressure on the issue of toxic emissions in the case of aircraft engines. The level of toxic emissions from aircraft engines may be from ten up to even several thousand times greater than the level of emissions from piston engines. The issue of how biofuel additives can affect the process of fuel atomisation and thus enable the control over the atomisation to obtain the smallest possible drops leading to reduced nitrogen oxides emissions is a new and original issue. The reduced nitrogen oxides emissions in the case of biofuels is of utmost significance because, according to latest knowledge, those levels are increasing.

Opis:
The study aimed to determine the baseline and indicators for the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) and to evaluate the effectiveness of GHG mitigation measures in Thai upstream petrochemical plants. During 2005–2010, the upstream production had an annual demand for energy in the range of 110 000–150 000 TJ, ca. 5–6% of the total Thailand energy consumption. The proportion of energy consumption for producing olefin and aromatic products is 73 and 14%, respectively. The amount of GHG emissions equalled approximately 7–9 Mt CO2 eq. This represents a 3% portion of the total GHG emissions of Thailand, separating into the olefin and aromatic products, around 69 and 18%, respectively. The ratios of GHG emission came from fuel combustion of 59%, steam consumption (28%), electricity consumption (10%) and flare (3%). The carbon intensity of upstream products in the olefins and aromatics’ groups had the range of 1.125–1.309 and 0.518–0.667 t CO2 eq/t, respectively. It was likely that the carbon intensity during the period of 2005–2010 was lowered as the industry sector took measures to improve energy conservation and developed their production processes. The GHG mitigation measures by energy conservation were already implemented including fuel saving (67%), steam saving (23%) and electricity saving (10%).

The typical combined heat and power plants requires the introduction of additional heating medium. The alternative solution is the direct integration of the exhaust gases from heat engine. The high temperature, surplus oxygen and low water content of the GTs exhaust gases enabled the successful integration at industrial scale as: preheated combustion air for industrial furnaces, heat source for drying and for absorption chillers. The article comprises the reference list for direct exhaust gas integration of GTs produced by GE, the processes overview, GTs selection criteria, as well as the review of documented GTs applications in process industry focusing on technical and economic considerations. The described solutions allowed to reduce the specific energy consumption in the range from 7 to 20% or the costs of energy consumption by 15-30%. The overall efficiency of cogeneration plant above 90% was achieved. The preliminary assessment of potential applications for GTs produced by GE with TEG integration in Polish process industry is done.

Online quantitative analysis of reaction gases or exhaust in industrial production is of great significance to improve the production capacity and process. A novel method is developed for the online quantitative analysis of reaction gases or exhaust using quantitative mathematical models combined with the linear regression algorithm of machine learning. After accurately estimating the component gases and their contents in the reaction gases or exhaust, a ratio matrix is constructed to separate the relevant overlapping peaks. The ratio and calibration standard gases are detected, filtered, normalized, and linearly regressed with an online process mass spectrometer to correct the ratio matrices and obtain the relative sensitivity matrices. A quantitative mathematical model can be established to obtain the content of each component of the reaction gases or exhaust in real time. The maximum quantification error and relative standard deviation of the method are within 0.3% and 1%, after online quantification of the representative yeast fermenter tail gas.

Opis:
Segmentation of greenhouse gas emission into fuel combustion emissions and process emissions is very important in energy-intensive industries, including the steel sector. The ratio of process emissions to emissions from fuel combustion is different in various industries, e.g. in the cement industry is 60:40 (no data for the steel sector). A common feature of all energy-intensive industries are very limited opportunities to reduce process emissions. Most often, this would require the development of entirely new processes. Another solution could be the method of capturing and storage carbon dioxide underground (CCS), but for various reasons, including social, this technology does not develop too intensively towards the creation of practical possibilities of its use. Therefore, it seems advisable to accurately separate process emissions and fuel combustion emissions in each production process of energy intensive industries and to make efforts so that these emissions are excluded from the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). Currently, benchmarks set by the European Commission define the total emission cap, and the share of emissions from the combustion of fuels is determined based on gas combustion, which further deteriorates the competitiveness of these industries, the functioning of which is based on the combustion of coal, as the steel sector in Poland. In many manufacturing processes reactions of carbon with oxygen are triggered not in order to produce energy required in the process (fuel emission), but are the result of chemical reactions necessary to obtain the required physico-chemical semi-finished products or products (process emissions) – e.g. calcium carbonate decomposition during sintering of iron ore. The paper presents the results of analyses that are fundamental to making efforts to exclude process emissions from the EU ETS and cover the identification of the issue and the justification for exclusion. In the steel sector, the most promising in this area are the following processes: sintering, blast furnace, BOF and steel melting in an electric arc furnace. Other energy-intensive industries, such as industrial energy, heating, non-ferrous metals, chemicals, cement, glass and lime, also conducts similar analyses, and the consolidated results will be the subject of a request to the European Commission.
Najczęściej wymagałoby to opracowania zupełnie nowych technologii.

In the present paper, the one-dimensional model for heat and mass transfer in fixed coal bed was proposed to describe the thermal and flow characteristics in a coke oven chamber. For the purpose of the studied problem, the analysis was limited to the calculations of temperature field and pyrolytic gas yield. In order to verify the model, its theoretical predictions for temperature distribution during wet coal charge carbonization were compared with the measurement results found in the literature. In general, the investigation shows good qualitative agreement between numerical and experimental data. However, some discrepancy regarding the temperature characteristics at the stage of evaporation was observed.
