Opis:
The article aims to present concisely and chronologically the most critical stages of the formation and evolution of the Germans’ historical consciousness and identity after the end of the World War II. This process was based on how German society dealt with the National Socialist dictatorship (the focus of this paper) and the communist dictatorship of the Socialist Unity Party (Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands, SED). Multiple factors have, over the years, contributed to how the Germans’ have dealt with their past and to the increasing awareness of this nation of its initially ineffaceable guilt and responsibility for the memory of World War II, as well as its homicidal role in this war. Among them were the post-war acceptance and integration of the “expellees” in both German states, the gradual confrontation of German society with the subject of the Holocaust itself and its mass-scale nature (for instance through touting the Nuremberg and following trials of war criminals and their assistants), and holding public debates on challenging issues related to the past (not imposed from above, but resulting from the needs of German society—for example some disputes between historians, the Walser-Bubis debate). Literary works often inspired the latter (for example, Günter Grass’s “Crabwalk,” Jörg Friedrich’s “The Fire”) and exhibitions presented in Germany (for example, on the crimes of the Wehrmacht). These considerations are a form of introduction to the second part of this article presenting the most important conclusions from an analysis, conducted by the author in 2014, of public speeches of prominent German (and Polish) politicians from the period 1989–2011 on subjects related to history. Its results confirmed that prominent German politicians are conscious of the guilt of Germans’ fathers and grandparents—not only for the outbreak of World War II, but above all for the Holocaust and crimes committed against a number of national, ethnic, and other groups—and they admit it. However, it is noticeable that the Germans’ knowledge about the criminal occupation of Central and Eastern Europe and the role of Poland in the overthrow of communism and the reunification of Germany is low and insufficient from the Polish perspective, among others.

Opis:
The subject of Claudian’s Gigantomachia, narrating the great war between the Gods and the Giants, is vividly felt in the fourth century AD, given the historical context during which it was written. This piece, besides being mythological in a Christian world, remains unfinished, and the perspective of the incomplete end raises some questions: did Claudian do it voluntarily? Was he forced to do so? Was the end lost? And more generally, why would an official poet choose to write on a subject which does not align with the new way of thinking of a Christian Roman Empire, while rewriting a myth which tends to echo the military and the political context he was living in? In order to see through this perspective, it may be interesting to observe Claudian’s adaptations in rewriting the myth in order to grasp the different aspects of the context he was living in and that he was trying to mirror, and also to question the function of such a narration for Claudian himself, between pessimism towards loss and hope for a brighter future. This study, which focuses on the difficult adaptation of Pagans to the Christian era, allows to see, through a thorough study of Claudian’s Gigantomachia, the expression of a personal belief in an epic poem. Late Christian Antiquity poetry therefore appears both as a means to express one’s feelings and to overcome them.

Recognition that societies will not be able to build a future as long as they do not face the ‘demons of the past’ has become a kind of universal truth over the last decades of the 20th Century (Gibney et al., 2008, p. 1). This view, though challenging and ambiguous, is reflected in the globally present attempts to improve or rebuild relations within and between different communities at the domestic and international level. The question concerning, on the one hand, the essence and most essential elements and, on the other hand, the instruments and the limitations of rebuilding relations, as well as the political implications of those processes have become the broad area of interest and the discourse leading to significantly different ideas and solutions. The article aims at presenting different approaches referring to dealing with the conflicted and traumatized past both at the domestic and international level. Some selected instruments and methods which enable movement from a divided past towards a common future are discussed namely the strategy of engagement with the past versus the strategy of avoidance of the past. The special attention is paid to the notion of reconciliation understood as a process of rebuilding of relations through the multi-dimensional transformation of former adversaries after the period of violence and repression.

Managing disruptive behavior calls for a special set of techniques and ways to change it, at least during the time that the student is in school (Arends1991:170-172). The aim of this paper is to discover whether teachers employ multifarious techniques and strategies while dealing with discipline problems and how these techniques work in the classroom context.

This article deals with the importance of focusing seniors’ attention on cybercrime and cybersecurity. We should perceive cybersecurity as a key component of state security. Technological development has brought new forms of crime in this area. The people above 55 belong to the most vulnerable group in terms of cybersecurity threats and consequently they become a common target for cyber criminals. Prevention in this area is therefore of the utmost importance. Information and communication technologies make our lives easier. They speed up communication and information access and as well as access to various services on one hand. But in case of insufficient security, an increasing dependency of the public and private sector on these technologies is increasing the threat of a cybercrime. This makes cybersecurity one of the biggest challenges that need to be properly addressed by the state.

Background: Fibrinogen is a protein playing pleiotropic role in human body. It is engaged in maintaining hemostasis. Congenital fibrinogen disorders comprise quantitative and qualitative fibrinogen anomalies. The symptoms range from bleeding, thrombosis to asymptomatic at all what is the most common case. Hypodysfibrinogenemia with lower level of fibrinogen of reduced activity, is the least common of all congenital fibrinogen disorders. Case report: A 31-year-old woman was reported at the 21 weeks of gestation, suffered from genital tract bleeding and there was a history of stillbirth. Clinical examination with no pathology, however laboratory tests revealed coagulation abnormalities due to prolonged thrombin test, decreased protein S and lower fibrinogen level (70 mg/dl). Autoimmune diseases were excluded and the diagnosis was widened with rotational thromboelastometry and genetic test for hypodysfibrinogenemia. The patient was treated with fibrinogen substitution and prophylactic dose of heparin throughout pregnancy and 2 weeks following labour. At 39 week of gestation Caesarean section was done, with no complications. Results: Genetic test revealed heterozygous mutation in fibrinogen gamma gene confirming hypodysfibrinogenemia. Due to bleeding manifestation in this patient of congenital fibrinogen disorders, fibrinogen substitution was implemented with heparin as a paranticoagulant prophylaxis, what turned out to be successful and enabled the patient to maintain the pregnancy. Conclusions: As hypodysfibrinogenemia symptoms are diverse the management is difficult and each patient’s therapy should be planned separately. Pregnancy may be the first time when congenital fibrinogen disorders reveal and it is especially challenging to prevent from obstetrical complications.

Opis:
Alcoholism, which is a major public health and social problem, can be viewed from several perspectives, as its occurrence is a multifaceted phenomenon in terms of its development (causes), effects, and maintenance. The Relational Family Therapy paradigm looks at alcoholism and its dynamics in relation to dysfunctional affect regulation. Dysfunctional affect regulation and the general inability to manage emotions are often mentioned in relation to the development and maintenance of alcohol addiction. The mechanism of affect regulation generally refers to internal processes that allow an individual to maintain their emotions to a degree that feels still bearable for them. According to these assumptions, alcoholics drink in order to cope with difficult emotions, either because they have more negative emotional states than others do, or because they lack the internal resources to cope with these negative emotions. For them, consuming alcohol is a series of repeated attempts to regulate heavy emotions, which often stem from painful past experiences. The process of Relational Family Therapy, therefore, as treatment of addiction, focuses on identifying and transforming the dysfunctional regulation of affect, which is behind addictive behavior. By means of action research methodology, this paper presents the approach of Relational Family Therapy in working with an alcoholic client, with an emphasis on the aspects of affect regulation. We show how the client’s alcohol use appeared as a dynamic of inappropriate regulation of a painful core affect. In the process of Relational Family Therapy, a more functional regulation of the core affect was established, thereby reducing symptomatic behavior (alcoholism) in the client.

Aim: The main goal of the article is to showcase how husbands performed the role of caregivers for their wives after breast cancer diagnosis. The researchers analysed this issue by comparing the perspectives of the male caregivers with their wives’ opinions. The wives were active members of Amazon clubs. Background: Partners of women with breast cancer are expected to assume responsibility for taking care of their wives. Simultaneously, however, they are not prepared to fulfil their new duties, nor are they being provided with any professional support in this regard. Method: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight married couples, separately with wives and husbands. Results: Husbands perceive their role in their wives’ struggles as primarily supportive and channel any negative emotions via undertaken actions. They support their wives in four ways: by focusing on their wives’ feelings and caring about her, taking part in the healing process, manag- ing the household during the period of their wives’ recovery, and by bringing back normalcy into their lives. Conclusions: Limited knowledge about oncological diseases, deficiencies in the assistance services offered to husbands of women with breast cancer and stereotypes about gender roles contribute to the difficulties men face when taking care of their sick wives. Even the wives active participation in the Amazon movement does not seem to mitigate their problems.

Opis:
Emotion and affect are different, yet intricately interwoven. Emotions such as fear, joy, or sadness are biological in as far as they are physically felt, but they are relational in as far as they are more fully experienced. Affect arises out of the relational quality of emotion—it consists of the myriad ways in which emotions are embodied, expressed, and enacted. Emotion and affect are influenced by their physical and symbolic contexts. In terms of physical context, data for this article were collected from two different research studies and several sites in the Free State Province of South Africa. Two forms of data were collected: verbal data and images/artworks. In terms of symbolic context, these verbal and visual forms of language and their functioning were explored to generate insights on the social construction of emotion and affect. Margaret Wetherell’s work provides a theoretical basis for analyzing emotion and affect. Rather than conceptualizing emotion in terms of obscure or esoteric formulations, her “practice-based” approach grounds the study of emotion by examining its manifestation in actions. When taken together, action and practice imply pattern and order, form and function, process and consequence. Both projects featured in this paper are sensitive studies that stir emotion. This is fertile ground for exploring emotion and affect in participants’ narratives. It is also fertile ground for exploring how emotion and affect may influence the qualitative researcher and the research process itself. Accordingly, this paper offers an additional layer of analysis on the functioning of intersubjectivity, power, emotion, and affect in the research encounter. Concluding insights endorse the practice of mindfulness as a fruitful approach to manage researcher subjectivity in the qualitative research encounter.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of the research conducted among men dealing with the divorce crisis was to examine the correlation between the fathers’ hope for success, understood as their confidence in the willpower and competence to overcome difficult situations, and their sense of happiness.THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The main aim of the research was to address the question of whether there exists a correlation between the hope for success and the sense of happiness in fathers dealing with the divorce crisis and, if so, what is the nature of this connection. The study employed Hope for Success Questionnaire (the Polish adaptation of C. Snyder’s Hope Scale). The level of happiness was determined with the use of the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire.THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The disquisition consists of five parts. First, the author introduces the problem and discusses the situation of contemporary fathers dealing with the divorce conflict. The second part outlines the assumptions of the research. Then, the article offers the theoretical framework regarding the hope for success and the sense of happiness. This part is followed by the analysis of the research material. The final part contains a conclusion.RESEARCH RESULTS: The results revealed significant interdependence between the general level of hope for success and willpower, and the sense of happiness of the fathers participating in the study. The analysis of the material concerning the differences in the level of hope for success and the sense of happiness that took into account socio-demographic profile of the respondents displayed statistically significant differences as far as the financial situation of the fathers is concerned.CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: It may be assumed that in the case of fathers interested in the improvement of their relationship with the child after the divorce, the hope for success and conviction about their effectiveness and persistence foster their mental well-being, encourage the adoption of a more optimistic approach, and help find self-acceptance.
