The article presents the composition of the dendroflora in a historic park surrounding the castle in Szamotuły. In total 465 specimens of woody plants were inventoried (51 taxa of 37 species in 21 families). Most of them were native, angiospermous trees of the apophyte and spontaneophyte groups. In the park there are three specimens of Taxus baccata, registered as natural monuments. The age of more than 100 trees was estimated at over 100 years. The trunk circumference of more than 60 trees exceeded the minimum value assumed as a criterion of categorisation as a natural monument.

Opis:
The castle ruins in Melsztyn are situated in the Dunajec River valley between Tarnów and Zakliczyn. The castle hill holds a rich malacofauna. The presence of numerous open-country, calciphile forms is a unique feature of this assemblage. Its composition and structure seem to be directly related to anthropogenic environmental changes caused by the construction and maintenance of the castle. The fauna from Melsztyn includes many species which are very rare in the Beskidy Mountains, such as Helicella obvia, Cochlicopa lubricella, Euomphalia strigella and, particularly, Truncatellina cylindrica, which is the dominant component of the assemblage. These species seem to be anthropogenic immigrants. The Melsztyn castle ruins, like other castle remnants in the Beskidy Mts, constitute a refugium for terrestrial faunas, especially calciphilous, open-country species. The environmental, scenic and historical value of the castle hill fully entitles the site to be classified as a legally protected nature-landscape complex.

Opis:
According to the traditional understanding, the role of history in literary works was te- aching by example. History was expected to provide readers with ready formulae for appropriate behaviour, to introduce models to follow and to identify with, as well as to explain the difficulties of life. In the second half of the eighteenth century such an appro- ach to history tumed out to be inadeąuate. This article presents Horace Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto - the first Gothic novel in English literaturę - as a work that subverts exemplary historicism by reversing the traditional exemplifying role of history. Published in 1764, when neoclassical ideals were still being promoted by such important writers as Doctor Samuel Johnson, Walpole’s novel commenced a new trend in literaturę that fully developed in Romanticism proper. It is not really intended to teach by example or to ren- der medieval history in terms of modem Enlightenment standards. Instead of rational explanations and balanced opinions its readers get an abundance of supematural pheno- mena and extravagant events. With its emphasis on entertainment rather than education, the story is a signum temporis, a significant step on the way towards the priority of aesthe- tic values in literary works. The article focuses on the novel in the context of its publica- tion in the Age of Reason. The two different prefaces are briefly analysed, and the chan- ging critical reception is presented. Some attention is also given to Clara Reeve’s The Old English Baron as an immediate successor of Walpole’s book, and simultaneously a strong criticism of his innovative perception of the role of literaturę. Despite the multitude of un- favourable comments by eighteenth-century writers and critics, the conclusion reached in this article is that such Gothic novels opened up a new perspective in the literary world. Walpole’s role as the forerunner in this field remains unquestionable.

Opis:
Based on an analysis of two Prefaces to Horace Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto. A Gothic Story, the paper offers a cognitive poetics view of paratext, a literary device defined by Genette as “a threshold of interpretation”. Viewed as a symptom of the author’s presence “with-in” and “with-out” text, paratextual information is held to play an important role in text interpretation. It is claimed that a literary work’s interpretation is a result of the speaker/author – hearer/reader meaning negotiation which takes place in the Current Discourse Space (Langacker 2008) and involves intersubjectification, a cognitive process referred to by Langacker as “apprehension of other minds” (Langacker 2007).

Opis:
In 2019, new research was initiated at two archaeological sites located on the Ropa River, in Gorlice County, in the southeastern part of Małopolska Province. The first site was the Castle Hill in Biecz, and the second one was the fortified stronghold in Kobylanka. The research consisted of three stages. Firstly, extensive archival and library queries were conducted in order to gather basic information about both sites. Secondly, surface research was performed in order to collect any movable monuments. During the third stage, a reconnaissance by means of GPR, electrical resistivity imaging and geo-magnetic survey was carried out. These provided plenty of new valuable information on the spatial layout of both sites. In the case of the Castle Hill, the analysis of the discovered anomalies allowed for the interpretation of some of the finds as remnants of the brick elements of the castle, e.g. the tower, which corresponds with the plan from 1877. The results of the analyses of the anomalies from the fortified stronghold in Kobylanka, with its ramparts made of stone and earth as well as inner circular housing, were far more ambiguous. Its chronology may date back to the early Middle Ages

This article discusses The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole as the first gothic work dramatizing, through the theme of “usurpation”, the emergence of the new but “greedy” bourgeoisie in England in the eighteenth century as a threat against the long-established, and from Walpole’s perspective, “divinely ordered” aristocratic system. Au fait with the worries and expectations of aristocracy, for he is the son of Robert Walpole (the first Prime Minister of England), and a member of nobility and the Parliament, Walpole, in his work, cannot help defending the established system against the emerging bourgeois paradigm. In the article, Walpole’s concern with the chaotic state of his country, which he reveals through building a devastating class conflict in Otranto, will be analyzed with the help of biographical, historical, and Marxist approaches. Finally, by referring to the Freudian theory of “wish-fulfillment through dreams”, Walpole’s solution for the conflict will be shown to be a self-gratifying one, satisfying the author’s aristocratic self.

Opis:
“Text and Textualization” examines the various symbolic and practical uses of a law book possessed by the High Court of Magdeburg Law at the Castle of Kraków through the entirety of its four centuries of operation. The essay contends that this book, now preserved at the library of the Jagiellonian University as manuscript codex BJ 168, played a vital symbolic role alongside its practical function. In the course of detailing these aspects, the study suggests that the multiple purposes for which the codex was used are illustrative of several aspects of the court’s peculiar culture during its medieval period of operation and beyond. Methodologically, the essay employs the notion of textualization as a tool for understanding what roles codex BJ 168 played in the context of the culture of the court and how its component texts represented different varieties of legal consciousness within that culture. First, the essay argues that the codex served an important purpose as a textualized object – as the symbolic representation of the Ius supremum Magdeburgense castri Cracoviensis and all that it signifi ed. Secondly, the codex served as an exemplar of ius scriptum – law literally textualized – that composed a repository of, and reference to, the law represented by the Ius supremum. The essay ultimately argues that the dual function of the codex, which dates to the court’s fourteenth-century foundation, points to the complexity of the social and cultural context in which later medieval legal development occurred. Indeed, this duality represents a general transformation in the broader legal culture of Latin Christendom – a culture that was marked by the coexistence of different perspectives in legal consciousness – and suggests that elements of both continuity and change can comfortably coexist within a legal culture over long historical periods.

This paper presents the results of a study to assess the feasibility of using the Structure from Motion photogrammetric method to estimate what parts of Wołek Castle have survived from the 15th century to the present day. The photogrammetric measurements were made with a Nikon D5200 camera, and 249 mock-up images were obtained. Planimetry and altitude coordinates of the castle ruins were obtained using RTN GNSS measurements and the polar method. The measurements were made in the 2000 coordinate system in zone 6, the heights were obtained in the Kronstadt system. Two spatial models were made. The first one in the field scale was made using the ground control points measured in the terrain. The second one was made using ground control points measured on the model in the local system. The control measures were analyzed, the model compared with the actual orthophotomap, and it was estimated what part of the castle was preserved in reality.

The capture of the Marienwerder Castle, or where the Teutonic Order’s expansion to the East was stoppedThis paper analyzes the construction, features, and significance of the Marienwerder castle, and its capture by Lithuanian forces in 1384. Located in what is now Kaunas, the castle represented the furthest eastern point of the Teutonic Order’s penetration into the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. As the sparse historiography on it suggests, the event seems to have been overlooked by contemporary historians. In fact, this castle of the Teutonic Order was not just an ordinary fortress, but a mighty stronghold. A detailed analysis of primary sources allows classifying the capture of Marienwerder as a major event in the war between the Order and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania as well as one of the major victories scored by the latter. It may be concluded that the Teutonic Order’s expansion to the east, which had been started from Torun, was then stopped at Kaunas.

The goal of the construction of the Museum of Folk Architecture in Stara Lubovna was to document the material and spiritual culture of Slovaks, Spis Germans, Ruthenians, Gorals, Jews and Roma who lived here side by side for centuries and created cultural values of this region. The dominant feature of the exhibition is a national cultural monument - the Byzantine Rite Catholic Church of Matysova from 1833. Houses from the period (1900-1935) withfurnished interiors show the way of life, daily activities, celebrations of important annual and family holidays. Agricultural and industrial buildings showcase exhibits related to their original use. During the summer season the museum complex holds events presenting customs, traditional activities, crafts and folklore. Thanks to its location right next to the medieval Lubovna Castle and unobstructed view of the High Tatras, the exposition presents a unique site in Slovakia.

Opis:
Noble tombstones of the Renaissance era were distinguished by lavishly decorated forms and were a direct reflection of the complex processes of artistic style formation in the lands of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and that are now Western Ukrainian territories. The tombstones combined features of the late Italian Renaissance, Dutch Mannerism and local traditions. This paper presents a study of the Renaissance allegorical sculpture of Generosity in the castle Church of the Holy Trinity in the city of Brzeżany (present-day Berezhany in Ukraine), which is an integral element of the architectural and sculptural composition of the pediment finish of the tombstone of A.H. Sieniawski and the work of an outstanding sculptor from the first half of the seventeenth century—Jan Pfister. The sculpture belongs not only to the artistic heritage of Ukraine, but also that of the entire world. Under the influence of mechanical and physical factors, the sculpture suffered significant damage and requires urgent restoration measures. An analysis of its current state is analyzed and priority restoration measures are proposed.

Niniejszy artykuł prezentuje badanie renesansowej rzeźby alegorycznej przedstawiającej Szczodrość, zlokalizowanej w zamkowym Kościele Św. Trójcy w Brzeżanach, która stanowi integralny element architektonicznej i rzeźbiarskiej kompozycji tympanonu nagrobka A.H. Pod wpływem czynników mechanicznych i fizycznych, rzeźba uległa znacznemu uszkodzeniu i wymaga pilnych działań rewaloryzacyjnych. Przedstawiono analizę jej obecnego stanu i zaproponowano priorytetowe działania naprawcze.
