Opis:
The hydrogen production technologies developed in the Institute of Fluid-Flow Machinery, Polish Academy of Sciences in Gdańsk are discussed here. They include the following methods: dark fermentation, photoelectrochemical water oxidation and hydrocarbons (or alcohols) reforming by microwave plasma. The potential of hydrogen production by using dark fermentation of different popular wastes such as: agricultural wastes, textile or wood waste, was determined using suitable models. Also, the influence of microaeration during dark fermentation of some substrates, e.g. sour cabbage, was tested. Photochemical oxidation is a water-splitting process driven by radiation at the surface of a titanium-oxide anode. The Si microrods covered by titania films were verified as a photoanode material. The hydrogen production from methane, ethanol, isopropanol and kerosene was driven by a microwave plasma. The results obtained confirm that microwave plasma sources have a high potential for hydrogen production via gaseous and liquid fuels reforming.

Rosa gallica is a native species under strict protection and its cultivars are practically unknown in Poland. The aim of the observations was to evaluate the possibilities of growing the studied cultivars in the climate of Central Poland. In the years 2000–2012, observations were conducted of shrubs derived from the French rose (R. gallica L.) gathered in the Collection of Rose Cultivars of the PAS Botanical Garden CBDC in Powsin, Poland. 13 cultivars were studied: ‘Ambroise Paré’, ‘Belle Herminie’, ‘Camaïeux’, ‘Cardinal de Richelieu’, ‘Charles de Mills’, ‘Complicata’, ‘Duchesse d’Angoulême’, ‘Duchesse de Montebello’, ‘Officinalis’, ‘Splendens’, ‘Tuscany Superb’, ‘Versicolor’, and ‘Violacea’. Every year, frost damage to shrubs, the date of bud breaking and leaf development as well as the dates of initial, full and final flowering were recorded and the presence of symptoms of damage from diseases was observed. During the observation years, periods of weather conditions unfavorable for roses often occurred, both in autumnwinter- spring and in summer. Only small differences were observed in winter hardiness, development during the growing season, and blooming period. The majority of the studied rose cultivars overwinter without frost damage, even through severe winters. The shrubs begin their growth late, usually until the second half of April. Gallicas start flowering early, in the third decade of May – first decade of June. Most Gallicas should find a wider application as shrubs or hedges for parks, green areas in cities, historical places, or home gardens. They are recommendable for their high resistance to frost and diseases as well as for their small size.
Róża francuska (Rosa gallica L.) to gatunek rodzimy we florze Polski, objęty ścisłą ochroną gatunkow ą. Istnieją liczne odmiany uprawne pochodzące od tego gatunku, jednak w Polsce są one praktycznie nieznane i nieuprawiane. W latach 2000–2012 przeprowadzono obserwacje dotyczące wzrostu i kwitnienia u krzewów 13 odmian tej grupy róż zgromadzonych w Kolekcji Odmian Uprawnych Róż Ogrodu Botanicznego CZRB w Powsinie. Były to: ‘Ambroise Paré’, ‘Belle Herminie’, ‘Camaïeux’, ‘Cardinal de Richelieu’, ‘Charles de Mills’, ‘Complicata’, ‘Duchesse d’Angoulême’, ‘Duchesse de Montebello’, ‘Officinalis’, ‘Splendens’, ‘Tuscany Superb’, ‘Versicolor’, ‘Violacea’. Corocznie notowano powstałe uszkodzenia po okresie zimowym; daty początku otwierania się pąków liściowych i rozchylania blaszek liści; początku, pełni i końca kwitnienia oraz uszkodzenia spowodowane przez choroby. Warunki pogodowe w latach obserwacji często były trudne i niekorzystne dla róż, zarówno w okresie jesienno-zimowo-wiosennym (surowe zimy: 2002/2003, 2005/2006, 2009/2010, 2010/2011, 2011/2012), jak i letnim. Wśród badanych odmian obserwowano tylko niewielkie różnice w ich mrozoodporności, rozwoju w okresie wegetacyjnym i terminie kwitnienia. U większości badanych odmian nie notowano żadnych uszkodzeń mrozowych nawet po surowych zimach. Krzewy rozpoczynały wzrost póżno, zwykle w drugiej połowie kwietnia. Kwitnienie natomiast rozpoczynało się wcześnie – w pierwszej dekadzie czerwca. Odmiany pochodzące od róży francuskiej powinny znależć szerokie zastosowanie w parkach, na terenach zieleni w miastach, w założeniach historycznych, a także w ogrodach przydomowych. Odmiany te są godne polecenia ze względu na wysok ą mrozoodporność, brak podatności na choroby oraz niewielkie rozmiary.

The Position Statement on the principles of nutrition for children aged 1-3 years emphasizes that proper nutrition of children at this age determines their optimal psychometric development and has beneficial effects on the process nutritional programming, which reduces the risk of diet-related diseases in adulthood. Continued breastfeeding in the post-infancy period, together with the proper introduction of complementary foods, supplies all the nutritional needs of the child. A varied selection of food products is important to balance out the diet of a child in the context of energy and nutrient needs. Attention should be paid to products not recommended for frequent consumption, due to the possibility of the early development of improper eating habits that can lead to undesirable health consequences. Due to the potential risk of deficiency, adequate intake of iron, iodine, calcium and vitamin D, as well as of n-3 PUFAs (which is often insufficient) should be provided. Adequate dietary energy and protein intake protects children against protein–energy undernutrition and is crucial for their proper growth and development. An important element in the assessment of the development of children involves monitoring their nutritional status and physical development by systematically measuring their body weight and length/height and analyzing their weight gain. It is necessary to diagnose the causes of being underweight/ overweight in children. Physical activity (such as outdoor walks, plays, and games) and healthy sleep hygiene are recommended. Physical activity, an adequate number of hours of sleep, and the quality of sleep in early childhood may improve immunity, reduce the risk of excessive weight gain, and consequently reduce the risk of obesity later in life. Other issues discussed include the functioning of the digestive system as one of the determinants of the nutrition of young children, basics of proper nutrition, risk of nutrient deficiencies and development of proper eating habits in early childhood.

Committee of Electronics and Telecommunications of the Polish Academy of Sciences (KEiT PAN) has been acting on behalf of scientific community in Poland since 1960. The article presents structure, statutory tasks, and Committee activities on behalf of the integration and development of electronics and telecommunications sciences and technology in Poland. The Committee of Electronics and Telecommunications of PAS is all the time an active participant of research life in the country. However, this participation is different than it used to be, and all the time is subject to intense changes. The authors present critically the current status of the Committee, but also undertake an effort to newly define the role, activity and potential of KEiT PAN, in completely new conditions of doing research in Poland, Europe and worldwide, than it was at that time, when the PAS Committees were originally defined. The conclusions, upon possible acceptance by the national research and technical communities of electronics and telecommunications, may possibly serve to change and/or optimise the work of the Committee in the near future.

The article is intended to be an appendix to an earlier discussion on the activi- ties of the foreign scientific centres of the Polish Academy of Sciences (“Nauka” 4/2020 and 2/2021). It presents another case study, namely the centre situated in Rome – one of the eldest Polish centres abroad – its historical background and heritage as well as its recent activities. It points out also some actual present problems and challenges in order to stimulate a broader debate on how the PAS foreign centres could be better used to promote and disseminate the achieve- ments of Polish researchers.

Through this article, the current director of the PolSCA Office in Brussels (Dr. Tomasz Poprawka) and former director of the PAS Scientific Center in Paris (Dr. Kamil Szafrański) share their reflections and thus contribute to the dis- cussion on the functioning and role of foreign centers of the Polish Academy of Sciences. In response to the article co-authored by the former directors of the PAS stations in Vienna, Paris and Brussels – in which they initiated the debate – the authors present their own perspective on a vision of the balanced operation of the stations in three key areas: the action plan, administrative support and communication. Having in mind an effective operation of the PAS centers abroad, the authors wish to share their ideas, based on the experience to date. These include strengthening of the stations in the future, taking up new challenges and searching for innovative solutions for their continuous development, thus meaningfully contributing to the promotion of Polish science abroad. At the same time, the authors declare their willingness to take part in further discussions on the role and operationality of the Academy’s scientific centers abroad. This pub- lication consists of the following elements: introduction, discussion of issues related to science diplomacy, lobbying and advocacy of interests, analysis of administrative issues, an outline of aspects of internal communication and ex- ternal dissemination, and a summary.

The Poznań Branch of the PAN Archive in Warsaw was established in May 1956. From April 1974, the headquarters of the Branch was located in the building of the Poznań Society of Friends of Sciences in Poznań. The Archive collects, pro- cesses and makes available archival materials on the activities of the Polish Aca- demy of Sciences and legacies of scholars. The legacies that form the backbone of archival resources are gathered through purchases, donations and deposits. Then they are compiled in the form of inventories and made available for re- search purposes. The collections of the Archive of the Polish Academy of Scien- ces in Poznań contain rich documentation of the history of science in Poznań and in Poland. They concern both scientific institutions, including laboratories, edi- torial offices and some institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Univer- sity of Adam Mickiewicz in Poznań and other Poznań universities, as well as bio- graphies of individual scientists, especially those connected to Poznań and Great- er Poland. Archival collections with valuable materials related to groundbreaking events in the post-war history of Poznań and Poland are also interesting. Archival collections are also displayed at exhibitions and during scientific conferences. Archives from two legacies are available on the CYRYL portal – the Poznań Local Digital Repository.

The article shows the importance of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences (PAU) in building the prestige of the Polish state, reborn in 1918. It investigates primarily the first years of independence in which the Academy undertook actions aimed at gaining Polish science an international reputation. The scope and nature of the PAU’s cooperation with the authorities of the Republic of Poland – in particular with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs – was analyzed. The article is based on source materials – both archival and published – and literature on the subject. The information contained in the sources and published works has been critically evaluated, taking into account the specificity of the analyzed material. Based on the statutory objectives of the PAU, various forms of the Academy’s work were presented, which were related to building the importance of Polish science abroad. Reference was made to the involvement of the PAU in the work of international scientific organizations – the Conseil International de Recherches and the Union Académique Internationale de Recherches et de Publications. The influence of Polish national culture (supported and developed by the PAU) on the prestige of the Second Republic of Poland in the international arena indicated that the PAU’s actions were necessary in view of the desire to strengthen the position of the Republic of Poland in the circle of scholars from other countries – after years of Polish scientific and cultural achievements being underestimated, marginalized and attributed to others. The importance of support for PAU’s activities by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was established, as well as the beneficial effects but also the dangers related to the entry of politics into the field of science.
W artykule ukazano znaczenie Polskiej Akademii Umiejętności w budowaniu prestiżu odrodzonego w 1918 roku państwa polskiego. Artykuł dotyczy w głównej mierze pierwszych lat niepodległości, w których Akademia podjęła się działań, mających na celu zyskanie nauce polskiej międzynarodowej renomy. Operacjonalizując problem analizowano zakres i charakter współpracy PAU z władzami RP – w szczególności z Ministerstwem Spraw Zagranicznych. Artykuł powstał w oparciu o materiały źródłowe – zarówno archiwalne, jak publikowane – oraz literaturę przedmiotu. Informacje zawarte w źródłach i opublikowanych pracach poddano krytycznej ocenie – uwzględniającej specyfikę analizowanego materiału. W oparciu o statutowe cele PAU, przedstawiono różne formy prac Akademii, z jakimi wiązano budowę znaczenia nauki polskiej poza granicami kraju. Odwołano się do zaangażowania PAU w prace międzynarodowych organizacji naukowych – Conseil International de Recherches oraz Union Académique Internationale de Recherches et de Publications. Wpływ polskiej kultury narodowej (wspieranej i rozwijanej przez PAU) na prestiż II RP na arenie międzynarodowej, wskazywał, że działania PAU były konieczne wobec pragnienia ugruntowania pozycji Rzeczypospolitej w środowisku uczonych z innych państw – po latach niedoceniania, marginalizowania i przypisywania innym polskiego dorobku naukowego i kulturalnego.
