Opis:
Science is not a simple increase of knowledge, but a change in state of mind. This demands a personalized approach to the teaching/learning process, the consideration of new spaces serving to gain information and experiences, as well as making use of the dialogical nature of man to create a learning community. The child cannot be a background for teachers’ actions but an authentic real creator of his/her development. School should evolve from a socially and culturally authorised knowledge-transferring institution into an agency which will be a community of life and work. This paper focuses on selected aspects of a new culture of learning: constructive, self-regulated, situated and collaborative, that prepares the student for smooth functioning in a world marked by change.

Opis:
Palynostratigraphic studies of the Carboniferous strata of the Szczawno and Wałbrzych formations, outcropping in the vicinity of Wałbrzych in the northern part of the Intra-Sudetic Basin, are reported. Rocks of the Szczawno Formation in a section near Konradów had earlier been assigned to the Upper Visean, while rocks of the Wałbrzych Formation in the Biały Kamień section were included to the Lower Namurian [the Stenozonotriletes triangulus–Rotaspora knoxi (TK) Miospore Zone]. This study describes abundant palynological material with many taxonomically diverse miospore assemblages from these rocks, allowing precise palynostratigraphic conclusions. These showed that the rocks of the Szczawno Formation studied should be referred to the lower part of the Serpukhovian [Verrucosisporites morulatus (Vm) Subzone], correlated with the lowest Namurian, while rocks of the Wałbrzych Formation from Biały Kamień belong to the Lower Bashkirian [Lycospora subtriquetra–Cirratriradites rarus (SR) Subzone], correlated with the Upper Namurian A. These results indicate that the rocks from both sections studied are younger than they were earlier believed. This revises the age of the Szczawno and Wałbrzych formations in the northern part of the Intra-Sudetic Basin which belong to four miospore zones, from Vm to SR, corresponding to the Serpukhovian and lowermost Bashkirian (Namurian A corresponding to the Pendleian to Alportian of British chronostratigraphy).

Opis:
Multidrug resistance (MDR) of tumour cells is related to the overexpression of ATP-dependent pumps responsible for the active efflux of antitumour agents out of resistant cells. Benzoperimidine and anthrapyridone compounds exhibit comparable cytotoxic activity against sensitive and MDR tumour cells. They diffuse extremely rapidly across the plasma membrane and render the ATP-dependent efflux inefficient. Such uptake could disturb an energy metabolism of normal cells possessing an elevated level of ATP-dependent proteins, especially erythrocytes having a high level of the MRP1, MRP4 and MRP5 proteins. In this study the effect of five antitumour agents: benzoperimidine (BP1), anthrapyridones (CO1, CO7) and reference drugs used in the clinic: doxorubicin (DOX) and pirarubicin (PIRA), on the energetic state in human erythrocytes has been examined. These compounds have various types of structure and kinetics of cellular uptake (slow - DOX, CO7, moderate - PIRA, fast - BP1, CO1) resulting in their different ability to saturate ATP-dependent transporters. The energetic state of erythrocytes was examined by determination of purine nucleotide contents (ATP, ADP, AMP), NAD+ and values of adenylate energy charge (AEC) using an HPLC method. It was found that the level of nucleotides as well as the AEC value of erythrocytes were not changed during 24 h of incubation with these agents independently of their structure and ability to saturate ATP-dependent pumps. This is a very promising result in view of their potential use in the clinic as antitumour drugs against multidrug resistant cancers.

Opis:
Introduction: Chronic rhinosinusitis is an important disease of the upper respiratory system which substantially reduces patient quality of life and the methods of symptomatic treatment are tremendously limited. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the next therapeutic option which is a combination of respiratory rehabilitation and subterraneotherapy. Material and methods: The study covered 57 patients of whom 15 were men and 42 women. The average age of patients was 60 +/- 10.87 (standard deviation). 44 patients finished 15 days of therapy which covers full-time treatment. The average age of these patients was 59.7 +/- 11.6 (standard deviation). Results: In the study group, there was a statistically significant reduction among all analyzed symptoms of chronic rhinosinusitis. The general severity of symptoms decreased from 5.66 cm to 2.57 cm (p < 0.001), blockade/congestion of the nose from 5.49 to 2.23 cm (p < 0.001), anterior nasal discharge from 5.33 cm to 2.5 cm (p < 0.001), posterior nasal discharge from 6.04 cm to 2.71 cm (p < 0.001), facial pain/pressure from 3.43 cm to 1.45 cm (p < 0.001), headache from 3.73 cm to 1.19 cm (p < 0.001) and reduction or loss of smell from 4.17 cm to 1.94 cm (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Such a notable improvement in all analyzed symptoms led us to conclude that respiratory rehabilitation, especially such conducted in adequate climatic conditions, should be a valuable therapeutic option in the symptomatic treatment of patients with chronic rhinosinusitis.

Opis:
This study has been devoted to creative attitudes represented by 6-7-year old children, evaluated by the creative and re-constructive attitudes rating scale (SPTO)1. The central focus was to relate differences in attitudes among children commencing their education at the age of 6 to those who had started their school attendance before the reform (at the age of 7). An attempt was made to answer the question whether pupils differing in the year of birth, joined within one school form, would generate any disruption of their potential creativity. A complementary issue was to evaluate the level of creative attitudes along the dimorphic pattern.

Opis:
Dust mite allergens are common factors causing bronchial hypersensitivity in children with diagnosed bronchial asthma. As one of the main type of allergens in the domestic environment, they take a signifi cant part in this process. The authors studied the severity of bronchial asthma (according to GINA 2006) of 16 children and teenagers with confi rmed allergy to mites, who lived in the city situated in Upper Silesia, in correlation to acarofauna of their dwellings. Mite species, their number in 1 g of dust and guanine concentration in 1 g of dust (Acarex test) were examined in 57 house samples from 16 houses or fl ats. The dominant species were Dermatophagoides farinae and D. pteronyssinus; other species of mites, such as: Euroglyphus mayenei, Gymnoglyphus longior, Acarus siro, Tyrophagus putrescentiae, Lepidoglyphus destructor, Lepidoglyphus fustifer occurred only sporadically. There was no correlation found between the severity of bronchial asthma and the level of exposure to mite allergens from household environments in the studied group of mite-sensitive children and teenagers.
Dominującymi gatunkami były D. farinae i D. pteronyssinus, a inne gatunki roztoczy (Euroglyphus mayenei, Gymnoglyphus longior, Acarus siro, Tyrophagus putrescentiae, Lepidoglyphus destructor, Lepidoglyphus fustifer) występowały sporadycznie. Nie stwierdzono zależności stopnia ciężkości astmy oskrzelowej od stopnia narażenia na alergeny roztoczy w środowisku domowym osób objętych badaniem.

The aim of the study was to analyze indications and results of the first one thousand liver transplantations at Chair and Clinic of General, Transplantation and Liver Surgery, Medical University of Warsaw.Material and methods. Data from 1000 transplantations (944 patients) performed at Chair and Clinic of General, Transplantation and Liver Surgery between 1994 and 2011 were analyzed retrospectively. These included 943 first transplantations and 55 retransplantations and 2 re-retransplantations. Frequency of particular indications for first transplantation and retransplantations was established. Perioperative mortality was defined as death within 30 days after the transplantation. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was used to estimate 5-year patient and graft survival.Results. The most common indications for first transplantation included: liver failure caused by hepatitis C infection (27.8%) and hepatitis B infection (18%) and alcoholic liver disease (17.7%). Early (< 6 months) and late (> 6 months) retransplantations were dominated by hepatic artery thrombosis (54.3%) and recurrence of the underlying disease (45%). Perioperative mortality rate was 8.9% for first transplantations and 34.5% for retransplantations. Five-year patient and graft survival rate was 74.3% and 71%, respectively, after first transplantations and 54.7% and 52.9%, respectively, after retransplantations.Conclusions. Development of liver transplantation program provided more than 1000 transplantations and excellent long-term results. Liver failure caused by hepatitis C and B infections remains the most common cause of liver transplantation and structure of other indications is consistent with European data.
