Opis:
The article presents the concept of fundamental social motives, which is novel for Polish readers, and its relations with self-esteem. The studies conducted so far suggest that there may be significant correlations between various dimensions of self-esteem and fundamental motives focused on interpersonal relations (affiliation motives and mate acquisition/retention motives). Data was collected from a sample of N = 363 subjects in order to find predictors for the level and stability of self-esteem. The results include correlations between 11 scales measuring fundamental motives and self-esteem dimensions: its level and instability. Multiple regression analyses with self-esteem measures as explained variables and motives related to sociometer theory as explanatory variables were also conducted. The article presents a detailed discussion of regression analysis results for male and female samples. Limitations and future research directions are also discussed.

Opis:
Cadmium tolerance has been widely studied in various plant species. The study was undertaken to assess the response of Berberis thunbergii, commonly growing under urban conditions, to increasing concentrations of cadmium (1, 4 and 16 mg of Cd kg–1 soil). Experiments were conducted from June to August in a greenhouse. Accumulation of cadmium ions in barberry leaves was observed, at a simultaneous occurrence of mechanisms reducing its harmful effects by an increased synthesis of phytochelatins (PCs). Generation of PCs – putative heavy metal chelators was related to the phytochelatin synthase activity (PCS) and the level of metal accumulation. Increased contents of anthocyanins and flavonols in cadmium polluted barberry, considering that it is a coloured-leaf plant seems important in aspect of their multifunctional role in plant-environment interactions. Besides the capacity to chelate heavy metals, flavonoids are antioxidants and efficiently scavenge free radicals. Moreover, the content of chloroplast pigments was determined, but the changes were non-significant.

Opis:
The hospitality industry is classified as the most fundamental tourism service. As far as the dynamic development of the internet and its constantly growing number of its users are concerned, it seems natural for tourism managers and hoteliers to reach for this particular medium to present their offers and to sell them. Nowadays, the most significant issue for the entire hospitality industry is the broad scope of the global and international booking portals which are the contemporary distribution channels for tourism products and services worldwide. The aim of the following article is to assess the usability and functionality of four booking portals acclaimed on the Polish market (booking.com, hrs.com, hotels.com and hotel.info) with regard to the consumer’s (tourist’s) point of view and an evaluation of the suitability of this particular source of data for academic research through applying this method to hotels located in five Polish metropolises (Warsaw, Kraków, Łódź, Wrocław and Poznań).

Opis:
The personality constitutes very important factor of occupational development, adaptation and functioning. Personality disorders and their impact on the workplace are considered relatively seldom in literature. The authors analyze – theoretically and empirically – how earlier experi-ences form personality disorders and indirectly exert influence on occupational choices, and how occupational conditions and workplace could form personality disorders. In the aftermath of the research the conclusions confirm that certain forms of personality disorders depends on the experiences of childhood and adolescence, others – on the occupational career.
Osobowość stanowi znaczący czynnik zawodowego rozwoju, przystosowania i funkcjonowania.

Opis:
Biofiltration is the biological degradation of gaseous pollutants and is one methods of deodorizing disruptive malodorous gases. Micro-organisms play a central role in this process. As a result of their work, non-toxic compounds are produced. Biofiltration belongs to the methods that are low to non-waste producing. This is an alternative to classical methods used so far. The research on the improvement of process parameters and increasing its efficiency is being carried out. The applied solutions referred to above still constitute unresolved problem and for this reason are seldom used. This article presents a mechanism for biofiltration of odorous gases. The article is devoted to the mechanism of malodorous gases biofiltration on the basis of a study carried out on the half-scale support.

Opis:
Chromium (Cr) is a very common element. It occurs in 2 oxidation states, Cr(III) and Cr(VI). Although Cr(III) is not considered an element essential for mammals, it raises lots of controversy due to its role in the body. While Cr(III) action should be considered an effect of pharmacological action, Cr(VI) is included in the first group of carcinogens for humans. Moreover, it induces numerous pathological changes in the respiratory, urinary, reproductive and digestive systems. In addition, Cr(VI) is used in many industry branches, causing millions of workers all over the world to be exposed to Cr(VI) compounds. A considerable number of the occupationally exposed individuals are in favor of a deep analysis of the mechanisms of Cr(VI) action and a search for a way to reduce its negative impact on the human body. Numerous reactive oxygen species inducing oxidative stress and causing various damage are produced during Cr(VI) reduction in the cells. A good balance between antioxidants and pro-oxidants can reduce Cr(VI)-induced damage. The influence of vitamins and microelements on the adverse Cr(VI) effects has no systematic research results summary. Therefore, this work focuses on the role of dietary antioxidants such as vitamins and microelements in the prevention of Cr(VI) adverse health effects. Numerous studies have revealed a protective influence of vitamins (mainly vitamins E and C) as well as microelements (especially selenium) on the reduction of Cr(VI)-induced adverse changes. A potential protective effect of these ingredients may be useful in occupational groups that are particularly exposed to Cr(VI). However, more research in this area is required.
