Opis:
Introduction and objective. Obesity and overweight among teenagers and young adults pose serious problems for the Polish health care system. The aim of this study was to assess the relationships between the prevalence of overweight and obesity and the level of urbanization, consumption of selected food products and socio-economic development in the provinces in Poland. Materials and method. The material used in this study is based on data published by the Central Statistics Office (GUS) for population, components of the Human Development Index (HDI), urbanization level (URBI), average monthly consumption of selected food products per person, and the percentage of obese and overweight people in the Polish provinces. The prevalence of overweight and obesity in all 16 provinces was analysed in the context of the URBI, HDI, and the average monthly consumption of selected food products. Results. There was no a statistically significant correlation between the number of overweight and obesity cases and the levels of HDI and URBI. The negative correlations were found between the consumption of sugar and URBI (-0,710, p=0.002), bread and grain product consumption (-0.642; p=0.007) and fresh milk consumption (-0.594; p=0.015). Fish consumption correlated with URBI at a moderate level (0.550; p=0.027). The consumption of oils and fats strongly correlated with HDI (-0.788; p < 0,001). In the group of overweight woman, a moderate negative correlation was noted (-0.511; p=0.043) in cheese and curd consumption. Conclusions. The high level of economic development and urbanization have no direct impact on the prevalence of overweight and obesity in Poland. The results of the study indicate existing dependencies of the consumption of some of selected products with respect to the level of urbanization.

Opis:
Introduction. Growth hormone deficiency (GHD) is one of the main indications for growth hormone therapy. One characteristic of this disease is bone age delay in relation to the chronological age. Pituitary dysfunction negatively affects the growth and development of the jaws and teeth of the child. The secretion of endocrine glands regulates growth, development, and gender differentiation. It also controls the growth of bones and teeth, regulates metabolism of calcium and phosphate, proteins, lipids and carbohydrates. The primary role in the endocrine system is played by the pituitary gland which is responsible for the production of somatotropin[1]. Dysfunction of the pituitary gland has a negative effect on the growth and development of long bones in the body, and may have an adverse effect on the development of maxilla, mandible and dentition of a child. There is some information in the literature that dental age is delayed in short stature children; the replacement of deciduous teeth by permanent teeth is also delayed, and newly erupted permanent teeth often require orthodontic treatment. Applying hormonal therapy positively affects the process of replacement of dentition [2, 3, 4, 5, 6]. Objectives. The aim of the study was to assess bone and dental age, as well as analyze the state of dentition in children diagnosed with GH deficiency treated with growth hormone, depending on the duration of treatment. Materials and method. The study material consisted of 110 children (27 males, 83 females), hospitalized for somatotropin hypopituitarism in the Department of Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetology at the Medical University of Lublin, Poland. The mean birth age was 13 years (156 months) with a standard deviation of 2 years and 6 months (30 months). 47 children (43%) started treatment with the growth hormone (group starting treatment) and 63 children (57%) whose treatment was started 2–3 years previously (group in the course of treatment). The control group consisted of 41 generally healthy children (15males, 25 females) with ENT problems, such as hypoacusis and a condition after nasal injury, hospitalized in the Department of Paediatric Otolaryngology at the Medical University of Lublin, Poland. The mean age was 11 years and 5 months (137 months) with standard deviation of 2 years and 5 months (29 months). Informed consent was obtained from the parents. The study was approved by the Bioethical Committee at the Medical University of Lublin (Resolution No. KE-0254 /216 /2012).

Opis:
The phenomenon of erosion on mountain and submontane areas influences directly on high variability of soil properties. In the work there were presented results of analysis of spatial variability of bulk density, total porosity, organic matter content and saturated hydraulic conductivity, on eroded slopes of the Kasińczanka stream basin. Geostatistical analysis was carried out using the kriging method, based on irregular network, consisted of 52 points, situated by means of the GPS. Taking into account the calculated variability coefficient it was stated, that on the investigated area, the most flexible spatially was saturated hydraulic conductivity, while the less flexible turned out total porosity. Using the determined models of semivariance, the maps of spatial variability of chosen parameters were drafted. It was stated that high value of variance influenced on higher smoothing of spatial distribution in interpolation. Results of geostatistical analysis will allow to find locations for new measuring points, what has substantial significance in mountain areas, for precision analysis of soil properties. Based on the obtained results, it can be stated that the kriging method may be useful tool for determination spatial variability analysis of soil properties on an areas of mountain basins.

Opis:
Background. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of the level of physical activity on pulmonary function in patients with pectus excavatum. Material and methods. This study included 47 patients diagnosed with pectus excavatum, with a median age of 19 years (min. 17 years, max. 26 years). The degree of deformity was evaluated clinically by anthropometric measurement. Spirometry was used for the evaluation of pulmonary function. The demographic, clinical data, and experience of patients with sporting activity were examined using a questionnaire. The self-reported International Physical Activity Questionnaire short form (IPAQ-SF) was used to determine physical activity levels. Results. With higher physical activity, there was statistically significant higher inspiratory vital capacity (IVC) (rho=0.628), forced vital capacity (FVCex) (rho=0.455), and forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV₁) (rho=0.356). A statistically significant relationship was observed between deformity rate and spirometric parameters for FEV₁ (p=0.011), maximal expiratory flow rate of 75% FVC (MEF75) (p<0.0001), and peak expiratory flow (PEF) (p<0.0001). Conclusions. Respiratory functions of patients with chest deformity are positively influenced by physical activity.
Wprowadzenie. Celem badania było ustalenie wpływu poziomu aktywności fizycznej na funkcje płuc u pacjentów z lejkowatą klatką piersiową. Materiał i metody. W badaniu wzięło udział 47 pacjentów ze zdiagnozowaną lejkowatą klatką piersiową. Średnia wieku wynosiła 19 lat (minimum 17, maksimum 26 lat). Stopień deformacji został określony klinicznie za pomocą pomiaru antropometrycznego. Do określenia funkcji płuc zastosowano spirometrię. Wyniki. Wraz ze wzrostem aktywności fizycznej pacjentów zaobserwowano statystycznie istotny wzrost wdechowej pojemności życiowej (IVC) (rho=0,628), natężonej objętości wydechowej (FVCex) (rho=0,455) i objętości wydechowej pierwszosekundowej (FEV₁) (rho=0,356). Zaobserwowany związek pomiędzy stopniem deformacji i parametrami spirometrycznymi okazał się statystycznie istotny dla zmiennych: FEV₁ (p=0.011), maksymalnego przepływu wydechowego o 75% FVC (MEF75) (p<0,0001) i szczytowego przepływu wydechowego (PEF) (p<0,0001). Wnioski. Aktywność fizyczna ma pozytywny wpływ na funkcje oddechowe pacjentów z deformacją klatki piersiowej.

Opis:
Purpose: The main purpose of this study to analyze the coordination, propulsion and non-propulsion phases in the 100 meters breaststroke race. Methods: Twenty-seven male swimmers (15.7±1.98 years old) with the total body length (TBL) of 247.0±10.60 [cm] performed an all-out 100m breaststroke bout. The bouts were recorded with an underwater camera installed on a portable trolley. The swimming kinematic parameters, stroke rate (SR) and stroke length (SL), as well as the coordination indices based on propulsive or non-propulsive movement phases of the arms and legs were distinguished. Results: Swimming speed (V 100surface breast ) was associated with SL (R=0.41, p<0.05) and with TBL tending towards statistical significance (R=0.36, p<0.07), all relationships between the selected variables in the study were measured using partial correlations with controlled age. SL interplayed negatively with the limbs propulsive phase Overlap indicator (R=-0.46, p<0.05), but has no significant relationship to the non-propulsion Glide indicator. Conclusions: The propulsion in-sweep (AP3) phase of arms and their non-propulsion partial air recovery (ARair) phase interplayed with V 100surface breast (R=0.51, p<0.05 and 0.48 p<0.05) respectively, displaying the importance of proper execution of this phase (AP3) and in reducing the resistance recovery phases in consecutive ones.
