Opis:
Atmospheric icing poses a threat for safety in many areas of transport, especially in air transport and exerts harmful impact on operation of external sensors and mechanisms of aircraft, ships and land vehicles. In order to investigate phenomena leading to ice accretion on sensitive parts of objects exposed to icing conditions numerical simulation models are in use. These models are typically composed of submodels dealing with a fragment of the complex phenomenon of ice accretion and its interaction with external flow. A practical approach to simulation of icing process is to divide it into three problems being solved interactively: 1) simulation of two-phase flow of air and dispersed supercooled water and determination of distribution of mass of water hitting the object’s surface, 2) determination of conditions on the surface collecting supercooled water from the external flow and simulation of freezing and water film flow, and 3) modification of computational grid as a consequence of change of shape of the surface with deposits of ice. A simulation system directed at investigation of atmospheric icing on moving object is being developed as an extension of capabilities of a commercial CFD code ANSYS FLUENT. Solutions of two-phase flow of air and dispersed water with specific boundary conditions enabling the determination of distribution of water hitting the surface, as well as results of modelling of water film flow on the surface will be presented. The system of equations describing the transport of the dispersed water consists of the continuity and momentum equations. It is assumed, that interactions between the phases are onedirectional, i.e. the air flow influences the water droplet flow and not vice-versa. It is also assumed that the water film velocity distribution is linear in direction normal to surface. This way, both phenomena are being described with first order partial differential equations with respect to space and time and the solution approaches may be similar.

The article discusses the automatic control system of the Diamond DA42 aircraft anti-icing system. In the analysis of the issue of icing, four parameters were taken into account: air temperature, cloud humidity, temperature of the aircraft and precipitation. On the basis of the initial parameters, the authors determined the icing intensity, which is likely to occur on the aircraft skin. By automating the activities related to the activation of the de-icing system, it is possible to significantly relieve the pilot and increase the safety of air operations, particularly in conditions, which are conducive to the formation of icing. The authors performed a thirty-minute electronic simulation of the flight in real atmospheric conditions. The article discusses the obtained results of the simulation. Designed system uses fuzzy logic. The system inputs and output were determined and fuzzy expert inference system was developed in MATLAB software and Fuzzy Logic Toolbox. The proper system work was verified with use of MATLAB/Simulink software. Use of that kind of systems can significantly relieve the pilot and increase the safety of air operations, particularly in conditions, which are conducive to the formation of icing.

Opis:
Currently, overhead lines dominate in the Polish medium and low voltage distribution networks. Maintaining their high reliability constitutes a very important challenge, especially under the severely changing climate conditions. An overhead power line exposed to high ice and rime loads has been considered. Using the finite element method (FEM), mechanical reliability of the distribution infrastructure was examined under various atmospheric conditions. Loads under the stressful conditions of rime, ice and wind were determined for the weakest section of the 30 kV overhead line, which consisted of concrete poles and ACSR conductors. SAIDI and SAIFI reliability indices and costs were determined for several variants of object reconstruction. The results allowed for determination of a solution relying on relocating the cables of all lateral branches and main line ice protection, through a system based on a weather-coordinated increase of the electrical load. To verify the solution proposed, a field experiment was conducted. The experiment confirmed the effectiveness of the solution proposed that appears to be universal. The paper is a result of synergic cooperation of two academic teams, i.e. a mechanical and electrical power engineering one, and the Distribution System Operator (DSO).

Icing on the overhead contact line exclude the possibility of efficient current collection from the overhead contact line. The effects oficing can result in losses for carriers due to delay or cancellation of trains and also cases of damage to the traction infrastructure and pantographs. Th e existing methods of de-icing the traction network (mechanical, chemical and electrical) are currently ineffective. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a new electrical method that takes into account the detailed current flow in the overhead contact line. This article presents a model for calculating the current flow in the overhead contact line and the resistances of droppers, suspension elements, and distance holders measured on the basis of actual measurements.

Opis:
One consequence of the declining ice cover in the Arctic is increased areas of open seas. These new open sea areas lead to some challenging aspects related to ship stability. Longer fetch lengths, associated with build-up of larger waves followed by increased conditions for sea spray icing on vessels is one aspect. Open seas in combination with cold atmospheric temperatures is a prerequisite for polar low pressures to occur. Polar lows may represent an additional aspect of increased icing on vessels by heavy snow in addition to extensive sea spray ice accretion. Over the last decades, different formulas for prediction of sea spray ice accretion rate on ships were developed to form basis for ice accretion warnings. Some of these formulas seem to have certain limitations and appear to be conservative. Important limitations of some formulas are considerations regarding heat flux, relationship between wind and waves, and ice accretion related to Polar lows. This paper will take a closer look at the accuracy and the realism of different ice accretion formulas and, related to this aspect, we will also discuss whether ship officer candidates receive sufficient maritime education and training (MET) related to realistic ice accretion and ship icing aspects.

Ice formed on radome surfaces causes communication disruption due to radio-frequency interference (RFI), which reveals the importance of de-icing systems for radomes. As a radome de-icing application, in this work, carbon nanotube (CNT) thin films were fabricated using a spray-coating method, and influence of process parameters on RF transmittance and electrothermal propertieswas investigated. With the increase of spraying time, sheet resistance of the fabricated film decreases, which results in a decrease of the RF transmittance and improvement of the heating performance. Also, the de-icing capability of the fabricated CNT film was evaluated at –20°C, and efficient removal of ice under cold conditions was demonstrated.

Opis:
The de-icing salt has been used for decades to increase safety on the roads and sidewalks. In Poland, mainly the sodium chloride is used in order to maintain the roads in good condition during winter. Like other salts used for surface de-icing, it depresses the freezing point to lower temperatures and has an additional thermal effect by an exothermic reaction. However, this salt causes the accumulation of chlorides in the walls and stone buildings contributing to the deterioration of these facilities. The paper addresses the issue of the influence of salt solutions on the structure and geomechanical properties of rocks at negative temperatures. The study was conducted on the basis of cyclic tests which simulate complex action of both the negative temperature and the salty environment. The conditions for the tests were chosen so as to reflect the actual conditions of the winter in Poland. During the tests, the longitudinal wave propagation velocity, changes in weights of the samples as well as visual changes were recorded which allowed continuous tracking of occurring changes. At the end of the tests, the rock samples were subjected to uniaxial compressive tests. For this purpose, four lithological types were chosen, representing the sedimentary rocks: clastic and carbonate, widely used in stone constructions.

Opis:
The study analyzed the impact of additional tower structure masses on the change of the frequency of its natural vibrations; it also made attempts to mathematical description of this impact. Considerations apply to the tower supporting the lighting system of the city stadium in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski. The source of additional masses is the icing (frost, rime) and non-structural components constituting the technical equipment of the tower. The analysis was made by modeling by means of the Finite Element Method (FEM) of the structure with the assumption of a one parameter variation of its mass (i.e., the additional mass of all components, structural and non-structural, changes in proportion to one parameter, which is the outer surface of the element on which the ice layer is deposited). Solving the problem of natural vibrations, for subsequent models, representing different intensity of tower's icing, the following natural frequencies have been established. Thus, the increase of the ice-layer thickness on the surfaces from 0 to 2.4 cm caused the reduction of basic natural frequencies by a value, consecutively: for f1 → 26.9%; for f → 27.2%. These values are important from the point of view of technical applications. The findings allow to formulate a postulate that, in the analysis of tower's structure susceptibility to gusts of wind, structure's mass variability resulting from its possible icing was taken into consideration.

Opis:
It is not easy to make the insulators of the railway catenary for the dry and cold environment of the icy Qinghai-Tibet plateau, without causing serious ice-related flashover accidents. To study the operating status of catenary icing insulators, a two-dimensional icing model of catenary cantilever insulators was established based on the winter environmental characteristics of the Golmud station on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. Compared different directions of ice growth, the spatial electric field distribution, and surface temperature distribution characteristics of icing insulators were analyzed by multi-physical field coupling simulation. The results show that as the thickness of the ice layer increases and the length of the icicle increases, the field intensity of the insulator gradually increases, and the surface temperature continues to rise. When the ice edge grows vertically downward, the electric field intensity of the insulator is the smallest, and the electric field intensity is the largest when the ice edge grows horizontally. Although the surface temperature of the insulator will rise with the increase of icing degree, it is lower than the freezing point and will not have a great impact on insulation performance. Secondly, when the cantilever insulator is arranged obliquely, the increase in the inclination angle will cause the electric field to increase and the temperature to rise slightly, so the inclination angle of the oblique cantilever should be reduced as much as possible during installation. Finally, the insulator with better insulation performance is obtained by optimizing the structure of the flat cantilever insulator.

Opis:
Aircraft are equipped with ice protection systems (IPS), to avoid, delay or remove ice accretion. Two widely used technologies are the thermo-pneumatic IPS and the electro-thermal IPS (ETIPS). Thermopneumatic IPS requires air extraction from the engine negatively affecting its performances. Moreover, in the context of green aviation, aircraft manufacturers are moving towards hybrid or fully electric aircraft requiring all electric on-board systems. In this work, an ETIPS has been designed and optimised to replace the nacelle pneumatic-thermal system. The aim is to minimise the power consumption while assuring limited or null ice formation and that the surface temperature remains between acceptable bounds to avoid material degradation. The design parameters were the length and heat flux of each heater. Runback ice formations and surface temperature were assessed by means of the in-house developed PoliMIce framework. The optimisation was performed using a genetic algorithm, and the constraints were handled through a linear penalty method. The optimal configuration required 33% less power with respect to the previously installed thermo-pneumatic IPS. Furthermore, engine performance is not affected in the case of the ETIPS. This energy saving resulted in an estimated reduction of specific fuel consumption of 3%, when operating the IPS in anti-icing mode.

The impact of winter addition of salts to roadside soils was studied for the national road No. 28 in Poland, in Małopolska Region. The measured sections of the road No. 28 are two access ways to the city of Grybów. According to instructions of GDDiKA (General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways) both sampled routes: Grybów–Gorlice (sampling section G-G) and the section Nowy Sącz-Grybów (N-G) were included in II standard of winter road maintenance. The general increase in soil salinity, chloride concentration and pH values from the roadside soils was evidenced by the difference of results of two sampling campaigns, before and after winter season of 2015/16. Salinity indicators showed significant increase, even though weather winter season 2015/16 was rated as mild and road de-icing salts were applied at less-than-average rate. Soil hydraulic properties were calculated estimated from soil texture using pedo-transfer functions for estimating the dynamics of salts into soils, suggesting easy leaching of salts from topsoil.
