Opis:
The preponderance of religion-related violence especially in recent times seems to suggest some form of religious 'illiteracy'. This paper argues that there is a sense in which religious literacy advances religious tolerance. It further argues for a renewed role of adult education in advancing religious literacy and, by implication, combating religious intolerance. The paper uses examples from recent events and from some religions, including traditional African religion to buttress its argument.

Opis:
This study is about the importance of African authors in literature and the creation of an adult education course on African novels. It begins with my acknowledgement of a historian named David Olusoga and a novelist named Ben Okri. The first, Olusoga, produced a TV programme that gave me confidence that my idea for a course entitled African Novels could be successful. The second, Okri, wrote about how African Literature was the future. I will explain how I picked up their ideas and used them as a rationale for the course. The Workers’ Educational Association, for whom I produced the course, has a long history of student involvement. I have a great interest in both student autonomy and students taking part in their own learning. In my tutor role, I wanted African Novels to begin with a general idea about African authors and move to more specific books as the course proceeded. To this end, I began the course with an overview of the subject and a statement from the African novelist Chinua Achebe – to the effect that when you begin to identify with someone of a different colour and who even eats different food from you, then literature is really performing its wonders. I hoped that the students would carry out this identification. The paper will use auto/biographical methods, as defined in Merrill and West (2009, p. 5), to tell the story of how this course was created during a teaching space when my adult education centre was closed by the pandemic. The course could only be delivered once tutors and students could meet again face to face, and I give an example of this. The paper will be supported by reference to my own extensive research on bibliotherapy and by an account of how I used autoethnography as a research method. Both of these ideas enabled the course to develop and grow through reading, research, practice and reflection, as I will show.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of a study that explored the experiences of adult educators during the COVID-19 pandemic. This online survey was conducted in June 2020 and included directors and teachers in adult education from various institutions in Slovenia. Tutors at Slovenian Third-Age Universities and other associations that provided adult education were also included. The aim of our study was to examine how distance education was implemented during the pandemic, using the concept of ‘emergency remote teaching’ (Hodges, 2020). The study sample included 30 directors of adult education institutions and 124 teachers or tutors. The results showed that organisations providing adult education responded during the lockdown by providing adults with the opportunity to continue their education through distance learning. However, this was not the case for all of adult education programmes. Mostly language courses and formal education were offered. The results show that most adult educators quickly adapted to the new working conditions, but that teaching approaches were rather static and asynchronous teaching solutions. An analysis of the problems teachers faced and the support they needed has shown that action is needed to remove the obstacles to the future provision of adult education as much as possible.

Environmental adult education for community sustainability situates local knowledge within a global pedagogy and activism of survival. Practical and theoretical considerations of environmental popular education within indigenous people's social movements are explained, the environment and adult learning is explored. The aim of environmental adult literacy is to challenge scientific knowledge as the fundamental structure of learning, and to revalue people's experiential knowledge. A transformative ecological understanding of lifelong learning reconnects humans with nature and fosters social dialogue and action. Environmental adult education provides a rich and provocative discourse, and this article can be useful to readers seeking to connect social and ecological issues.

ADULT LEARNERS (21ST C.)
FREIRE PAULO
Opis:
Paulo Freire's humanistic adult education ideas were woven around his literacy 'method' that is synonymous with Conscientization. His ideas were aimed at empowering adult learners through the ability for critical thinking. He focused on critical thinking as a way of using education to rescue learners from decadent educational and political systems and making them truly human. This paper analyzes Freire's Conscientization and argues that it is more appropriate for addressing most of the challenges that confront 21st century adult education and adult learners. The discussion in this paper uses 21st century synonymously with globalization.

This article focuses on the analysis of the current state of the key competence development of adults in Lithuania. The following key competences are analysed: communication in native tongues and foreign languages, development of cultural awareness, entrepreneurship, application of information society technologies, and learning to learn. The research involved analysis of the definition and role of the key competences, discussing their typologies and revealing the preconditions, factors and approaches to the development of the key competences. Results of the quantitative survey involving 6992 adult respondents in Lithuania showed that the key competences are important for the majority of the research sample in their social, work and personal life. Individualised ways of key competence development are applied more frequently than collective ways. Key competence development is mostly enhanced by personal needs (work, wish of development and self-realization) and support of the family. The most frequently mentioned obstacles to the development of key competences are lack of financial resources and expensive training services.

Lack of data has been a serious deficiency for comparative research on adult learning until recently. The present paper explores new opportunities based on the European Adult Education Survey (AES). It argues that general indicators of participation in adult education and training must be complemented by more specific indicators revealing sectoral structures and behavioural patterns within the adult learning system. AES as a subject-specific survey can help to understand better “what is behind” a general level of participation in adult learning, as provided in other statistics. Country variations are explored across a set of 16 European countries.

Knowledge is considered to be the factor of societal and economical development of today and tommorow. The concepts of lifelong learning, learning society, knowledge society or society based on knowledge are one of the most currently discussed problems. There are other priorities and argumentative strategies found in OECD, EU, World Bank, Employers' Associations, trade-unions or in UNESCO. They can be divided to normative – represented mainly in politics and in the documents of various organizations and analytic – which can be found in proffesional and scientific discussion. On the other hand, there is not common view neither in science – pedagogy, andragogy, sociology, economics, philosophy etc. Education has eminent and stable role – to create the bridge between past, presence and future, to ensure continuity of human knowledge and development of society and its members. Two main objectives are fulfilling in the process of adult citizens education. The first is societal objective, aimed at the development of human resources, the second is aimed on the individual personality development, its ability to adapt on the changing life conditions.

Games gain popularity as teaching tools. Escape rooms, however, are a novelty, with most authors focusing on their description rather than the analysis of effects of their utilisation. The objective of this paper is to analyse experiences of players partaking in an educational escape game, and to observe escape rooms from the viewpoint of a scholar interested in the efficiency of the tool. The research material consists of questionnaires filled in by research subjects and transcripts of structured interviews. Due to the relatively large sample (N = 258), it is possible to conclude from the gathered quantitative data that there has been a growth in the subjects’ knowledge.

The aim of the article is to describe emotional geography, i.e. a research trend located on the borderline between human geography and contemporary affect studies, which focuses on the relationship between emotions and the broadly understood environmental, socio-cultural, spatial, economic, and political context. For this purpose, the author refers to theoretical analyses and research in the area of the so-called affective turn, and to the critical and political theories of emotions. She presents the relationship between education and emotional geography as well as examples of educational research projects on the socio-cultural spatial analyses of emotions and education. She also indicates the methodological implications for educational and andragogy research projects concerning the study of emotions in education, i.e. their transdisciplinary dimension. The presented way of conceptualizing the emotional geography of (in) education is a new look at the functioning of educational institutions and at the practice of lifelong learning. It can be a source of empirical research projects for theorists of education and andragogues.

From a sociocultural perspective of cognitive development as a dynamic social activity, this qualitative study explores the experiences of students in higher education regarding culture contact. The goal is to understand how these experiences shape their cognitive abilities, with a specific focus on the development and use of critical thinking as a higher cognitive ability, as well as how they apply critical thinking skills in a different sociocultural context. Critical thinking is presented as an ability for adult international students to navigate cultural disorientations within diverse sociocultural contexts, aiming to ultimately improve their educational outcomes (Halpern, 2013). The findings reveal that students’ interactions with diverse cultures in a different sociocultural setting shape their minds, behavior, and critical thinking abilities, leading them to adopt new and different strategies to overcome diversity.

In the Danish educational system, it is possible to enter an academic master’s programme on the basis of a professional bachelor’s degree combined with some years in the job market, for example as a social educator. These adult students share lectures with the younger university students but are challenged on several levels. The aim of the article is to understand how adult students approach the pursuit of a second degree, using a sociological perspective. Based on biographic interviews with mature students at the Danish School of Education, an analysis of their backgrounds, the paths their lives’ follow, and the narratives on which they draw, it is shown how their endeavours can be construed as a rite of passage. It demonstrates how the individual students’ life courses include factors that influence not only the content of their studies, but also their life expectations.
