Opis:
At the heart of the celebration of the Eucharist is the Eucharistic Prayer, during which the mystery of Christ is made present. In the Latin liturgy of the Western Church, for centuries the priest always recited the same Eucharistic Prayer at the Holy Mass from the Roman Canon. This oldest liturgical text was built symmetrically around the words of the institution that Jesus spoke over the bread and wine. The structure of the Canon itself was shaped over several centuries, but the proper arrangement was known already in the 7th and 8th centuries. The Canon of the Mass has been for centuries the basis for the theological interpretation of individual texts, gestures and signs. Particularly since the Middle Ages, they were explained on the basis of their allegorical interpretation. This way of interpreting the Mass was known since the 8th century and consisted of a moralizing, typological, commemorative, eschatic and an anagogical presentation of all liturgical rites. The treatise Liber de divinis officiis by Rupert of Deutz is one of the most important texts dedicated to the liturgy in the Middle Ages. Rupert of Deutz explained the celebrations of the Mass in the second book of his work. In the first place, he points to the Passion’s interpretation in the Canon, from the moment Jesus entered Jerusalem to His body being placed in the grave. The Passion is also emphasized by the sign of the cross made by the priest at the time of the Canon, which symbolizes the wounds of Christ. The allegorical interpretation of the Mass Canon, made by Rupert of Deutz, is part of the theological tradition of the Middle Ages. Although he did not discuss all of the texts in the Canon, he did interpret its essential parts.

Opis:
The aim of the present work was to evaluate the topography of spirochetes’ cells Borrelia burgdorferi s.s. B31 in atomic force microscope (AFM). Results: The length of spirochetes B. burgdorferi has ranged between 15.38-22.68μm. The cells of spirochetes do not constitute structures of a fixed diameter and height. Thus, in order to identify real parameters of cells, the horizontal distance and vertical distance have been used in the measurements. The average value of a spirochetes’ diameter has been estimated by taking series of measures and it is 0.40 μm. The average value of a spirochetes’ height has been estimated by taking series of measures and it is 70.14 nm. The analysis of a relation between measured parameters of spirochetes: diameter and height revealed that along with the growth of diameter of a bacteria cell, its height also grows. The average value of a fibers’ diameter has been estimated by taking series of measurements and it is 0.09 μm and the average height of fibers was 7.91 nm. Conclusions: The atomic force microscope (AFM) is a modern tool with a broad spectrum of observatory and measure abilities and is a technique which has been used in biology and microbiology to investigate the topography of surface and in the evaluation properties of cells.

Opis:
Plants have been an important source of medicine for thousands of years. Medicinal plants are the most important source of life saving drugs. Even today, the WHO estimates that up to 80 per cent of people still rely mainly on traditional remedies such as herbs for their medicines. Medicinal plants are resources of new drugs. Approximately one quarter of prescribed drugs contain plant extracts or active ingredients obtained from plant substances. Medicinal plants are the most important source of life saving drugs for the majority of the world’s population. The biotechnological tools are important to select, multiply and conserve the critical genotypes of medicinal plants. In-vitro regeneration holds tremendous potential for the production of high-quality plant-based medicine. An efficient protocol was developed for high frequency and rapid regeneration was achieved in Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal. Invitro cultures were initiated by meristematic explants on M.S–B5 medium with various growth hormones individually as well as combinations. Highest shoot multiplication rates were observed when explants grown in the medium supplemented with 2.0 mg/l of BAP. M.S–B5 medium fortified with 1.0 mg/l BAP was found suitable for optimum growth and elongation of shoots. The best rooting response were observed when the medium containing 1.0 mg/l of IBA. The rooted plantlets were successfully established in soil.

Leaf blades of Norway maple (Acer platanoides L.), growing in heavily polluted industrial area have been studied for anatomical changes developed under the influence of the industrial contamination (with SO2, NxOx, Pb, As). The aim of the examination was to reveal the dynamics in the development of leaf blades and to trace the impact of the contaminated air on the leaf structure of Norway maple. The conducted study registered acceleration of the vegetative growth of the leaf blades that is manifested through approximately two weeks earlier appearance of leaves on the tree, faster linear growth and strengthened the xeromorphic traits in the leaf structure of the tree plants from the contaminated region. The observed changes are regarded as adaptation of the plant to the polluted environment, i.e. as tolerance.

During one vegetative season, the growth and the development of the leaf blades of Tatarian maple (Acer tataricum L.) from heavily polluted area has been studied. The region under investigation was contaminated mainly with SO2, NxOx, Pb, Zn, and Cu etc. The aim of the study was to compare the growth and the development of the leaf blades of Acer tataricum L. (Tatarian maple) from polluted field with those from non-polluted. Base on this to assess its tolerance to polluted conditions of the atmosphere, as well as to look for adaptive responses. The conducted study registered shorter time of the vegetative growth of the leaf blades in the commencement stages of the vegetative development. The leaves from polluted site had emergence approximately two weeks earlier compared with these from the control area. Faster linear growth of the leaf surfaces in the commencement stages of the development had been noted for the trees from polluted field. The spongy mesophyll had been reduced, as well as the common thickness of the leaf blades of the tree plants from the contaminated region. The observed changes are regarded as adaptation of the plant to the polluted environment, i.e. as tolerance.

Opis:
Polluted air is a stress factor that contributes to the decline of urban trees. Air pollution may cause short-term (acute) damage, which is immediately visible and long-term (chronic) damage, which can lead to gradual tree decline. Long-term damage may predispose trees to other disorders. The impact of technogenic factors on the leaf’s anatomical structure of Acer negundo L. (Box elder) was studied. The thickness of the upper cuticle is increased when compared to those from an ecologically pure area. A change in the rate of mesophyll tissue is due to the enlargement of the palisade parenchyma. The thickness of lower epidermal cells is decreased. All changes of the leaf blade structure are significant and are in direction of increasing the xerophyte characteristics of the leaves. Box elder is native to much of temperate North America. This is a tree of lowlands and wet hardwood forests. As such, we can assume that the registered changes are adaptive responses of the tree to the contaminated environment and that the tree can be considered to be relatively tolerant.

Moreover, it satisfles the condition [formula], |Re z| → ∞, α > 1 uniformly in ‾Ga. The result is applied to prove the representation theorem for the inverse Kontorovich-Lebedev transformation on distributions.

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is a common public health problem and early diagnosis and treatment is important. Aim of the study: The aim was to evaluate complaints and radiological features, drug side effects, changes in radiological findings after treatment, and to evaluate the factors affecting this change in patients with pulmonary TB. Material and methods: One hundred patients with pulmonary TB were evaluated, and the following data recorded: age, gender, contact with TB patient, complaints, physical examination, tuberculin skin test, acid resistant bacillus, polymerase chain reaction and culture results, posteroanterior/lateral chest radiographs and thorax computed tomography findings at presentation and after treatment, treatment duration, and side effects. Treatment adherence and follow-up data were evaluated, and radiological findings before and after treatment were compared. In predicting radiological improvement, the effects of age, sex, duration of complaints, living in in rural/urban areas, treatment duration, treatment adherence, follow-up, and presence of cavitation were examined. Results: Mean age was 6.0 ± 4.2 years. 66 of the patients had contact history with TB patients. The most common complaint was cough, whilst infiltration and/or mediastinal lymphadenopathy were the most common findings in radiological examination at presentation. 84 patients were scheduled a treatment program for 6 months. Improvement in radiological findings were significantly better in patients who adhered to medication and follow-up protocols. Age, sex, complaint duration, living in rural/urban areas, treatment duration and presence of cavitation were not significantly associated with radiological improvement. Conclusions: Pulmonary TB should be considered in patients presenting with cough, even if their physical examination and chest radiographs are normal. Adherence to anti-tuberculosis treatment and follow-up were the most important factors in radiological improvement.

The familiar Beurling theorem (an uncertainty principle), which is known for the Fourier transform pairs, has recently been proved by the author for the Kontorovich-Lebedev transform. In this paper analogs of the Beurling theorem are established for certain index transforms with respect to a parameter of the modified Bessel functions. In particular, we treat the generalized Lebedev-Skalskaya transforms, the Lebedev type transforms involving products of the Alacdoriald functions of different arguments and an index transform with the Nicholson kernel function. We also find inversion formulas for the Lebedev-Skalskaya operators of an arbitrary index and the Nicholson kernel transform.

The leaf blades of white ash Fraxinus americana L. and London plane tree Platanus acerifolia Willd. growing in heavy polluted industrial areas were studied for morphological and anatomical changes developed under the influence of industrial contamination. The aim of the investigation was to determine and compare the influences of air polluted with SO2, NxOx, Pb, As, Zn, Cu etc. on the morphology and the structure of the leaves of these deciduous trees. Both species are tolerant to environmental changes but with different environmental characteristics and tolerances and they are widely used for planting. Under polluted conditions, the trees strengthened the anatomic xeromorphic characteristics of their leaf structures, which gave them the opportunity to mitigate the stressful conditions of the environment. The observed responses are regarded as adaptive and compensative to the adverse effects of air pollution.

Introduction. Evaluation of the prognostic potential of the S100B protein and neuron-specific enolase (NSE) as predictors of mortality in critically ill patients in intensive care units (ICU). Materials and Methods. The study was conducted on 62 patients. Basic clinical variables and blood samples for S100B and NSE level testing were obtained during the first four days after admission. Mortality was described as the patient's death during hospitalization in the ICU. Results. 35% of the patients had died. The level of S100B and NSE was significantly higher in non-survivors in comparison with survivors (p=0.007 and p=0.02, respectively). Mortality risk was significantly higher in patients with higher levels of biomarkers than the reference values for S100B (OR 9.00; 95% CI 2.38-33.99; p<0.001) as well as for NSE (OR 5.75; 95%CI 1.31-25.27; p=0.016). Receiver operating characteristic proved that S100B is a better mortality predictor than NSE (AUC 0.76 for S100B and 0.68 for NSE). From all the other variables, the Apache II score turned out to be the only significant predictor of mortality (AUC 0.88). Conclusion. There is a significant correlation between mortality in the ICU and increased serum concentration of S100B and NSE. This correlation is stronger for S100B. Testing for serum levels of S100B and NSE may be useful for prediction of treatment outcomes in the ICU patients.
