Opis:
Typical processing routes for bearing steels include a soft annealing stage, the purpose of which is to obtain a microstructure containing globular carbides in ferritic matrix. A newly developed process called ASR cuts the carbide spheroidisation times several fold, producing considerably finer globular carbides than conventional soft annealing. The present paper explores the effect of the heating rate and temperature on the accelerated carbide spheroidisation process and on the resulting hardness. Accelerated spheroidisation was achieved by thermal cycling for several minutes around various temperatures close to the transformation temperature at various heating rates applied by induction heating.

The aims of the current study is to investigate the constraint of using caustic soda in water treatment and evaluating its performance in water softening, compared to other chemical group, including lime and sodium carbonate. Based on mass balance of reactants in the caustic softening process, a mathematical relation for expressing the constraint of using caustic soda in water softening was derived. To evaluate caustic soda performance in water softening and proving the derived relation as well, some experimental works on some water sources including well water and clarifier’s inlet water in two oil refineries were performed. The results showed that compared to lime- sodium carbonate, the caustic soda is the best choice for water softening, however, using caustic soda in water softening, while restrictive mathematical relation doesn’t verify the chemical characteristics of water, could lead to an extreme increase in alkalinity.

Opis:
In recent years, speech recognition functionality is increasingly being added in embedded devices. Because of limited resources in these devices, there is a need to assess whether the defined speech recognition system is feasible within given constraints, as well as estimating how many resources the system needs. In this paper, an attempt has been taken to define a technique for estimating hardware resources usage in the speech recognition task. To determine the parameters and their dependencies in this task, the two systems were tested. The first system utilized Dynamic Time Warping pattern matching technique, the second used Hidden Markov Models. For each case, the measurement of recognition rate and time, vocabulary database size and learning time has been performed. Obtained results have been exploited to define linear and polynomial regression models, and finally, an estimation algorithm has been developed using these models. After testing proposed approach, it was observed that even low-end mobile phones have sufficient hardware resources for realisation of isolated speech recognition system.

Use of de-icing agents is necessary in winter to maintain appropriate quality of road and airport surfaces. Formate or acetate de-icing agents are safer for aircraft and the environment than the commonly used sodium chloride, but may cause an alkali-silica reaction in concrete. The study investigated the influence of sodium formate and potassium formate on the occurrence of ASR (alkali-silica reaction) in mortars with granite aggregate. Accelerated mortar-bar tests at 80°C using various de-icing agents were performed and detailed studies of the SEM-EDS microstructure were carried out.

Opis:
Deep neural networks (DNN) currently play a most vital role in automatic speech recognition (ASR). The convolution neural network (CNN) and recurrent neural network (RNN) are advanced versions of DNN. They are right to deal with the spatial and temporal properties of a speech signal, and both properties have a higher impact on accuracy. With its raw speech signal, CNN shows its superiority over precomputed acoustic features. Recently, a novel first convolution layer named SincNet was proposed to increase interpretability and system performance. In this work, we propose to combine SincNet-CNN with a light-gated recurrent unit (LiGRU) to help reduce the computational load and increase interpretability with a high accuracy. Different configurations of the hybrid model are extensively examined to achieve this goal. All of the experiments were conducted using the Kaldi and Pytorch-Kaldi toolkit with the Hindi speech dataset. The proposed model reports an 8.0% word error rate (WER).

Reverberation is a common problem for many speech technologies, such as automatic speech recogni- tion (ASR) systems. This paper investigates the novel combination of precedence, binaural and statistical independence cues for enhancing reverberant speech, prior to ASR, under these adverse acoustical con- ditions when two microphone signals are available. Results of the enhancement are evaluated in terms of relevant signal measures and accuracy for both English and Polish ASR tasks. These show inconsistencies between the signal and recognition measures, although in recognition the proposed method consistently outperforms all other combinations and the spectral-subtraction baseline.

Opis:
The paper presents the simple technique of speaker gender recognition that uses MFCC features typically applied in automatic speech recognition. Artificial neural network is used as a classifier. The speech signal is first divided into 20 ms frames. For each frame, Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients are extracted and the created feature vector is provided into a neural network classifier, which individually classifies each frame as male or female sample. Finally, the whole utterance is classified by selecting the class, for which the sum of corresponding neural network outputs is greater. The advantage of the method is that it can be easily combined with speech recognition, because both processes (gender recognition and speech recognition) are based on the same features. This way, no additional logic and no extra computational power is needed to extract features necessary for gender recognition. The method was experimentally evaluated using speech samples in English and in Polish. The comparison with other methods described in literature based on other feature extraction methods shows the superiority of the proposed approach, especially in cases where the recognition is carried out in noisy environment or using poor audio equipment.

Opis:
Research work on the design of robust multimodal speech recognition systems making use of acoustic, and visual cues, extracted using the relatively noise robust alternate speech sensors is gaining interest in recent times among the speech processing research fraternity. The primary objective of this work is to study the exclusive influence of Lombard effect on the automatic recognition of the confusable syllabic consonant-vowel units of Hindi language, as a step towards building robust multimodal ASR systems in adverse environments in the context of Indian languages which are syllabic in nature. The dataset for this work comprises the confusable 145 consonant-vowel (CV) syllabic units of Hindi language recorded simultaneously using three modalities that capture the acoustic and visual speech cues, namely normal acoustic microphone (NM), throat microphone (TM) and a camera that captures the associated lip movements. The Lombard effect is induced by feeding crowd noise into the speaker’s headphone while recording. Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models are built to categorise the CV units based on their place of articulation (POA), manner of articulation (MOA), and vowels (under clean and Lombard conditions). For validation purpose, corresponding Hidden Markov Models (HMM) are also built and tested. Unimodal Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems built using each of the three speech cues from Lombard speech show a loss in recognition of MOA and vowels while POA gets a boost in all the systems due to Lombard effect. Combining the three complimentary speech cues to build bimodal and trimodal ASR systems shows that the recognition loss due to Lombard effect for MOA and vowels reduces compared to the unimodal systems, while the POA recognition is still better due to Lombard effect. A bimodal system is proposed using only alternate acoustic and visual cues which gives a better discrimination of the place and manner of articulation than even standard ASR system. Among the multimodal ASR systems studied, the proposed trimodal system based on Lombard speech gives the best recognition accuracy of 98%, 95%, and 76% for the vowels, MOA and POA, respectively, with an average improvement of 36% over the unimodal ASR systems and 9% improvement over the bimodal ASR systems.

Opis:
Concrete pavements are prone to microstructural changes and deterioration when exposed to Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR). ASR results in strength reduction, cracking, spalling and other defects in the concrete if left unchecked. Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) such as Cow Bone Ash (CBA) however can be used to improve concrete performance, hence its use in this study. Concrete samples were prepared at replacement levels of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 30% of cement with Cow Bone Ash. The concrete samples were then subjected to petrographic and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis. Petrographic examination shows that the minimal and least amount of ASR gels and micro cracking were observed at 15% CBA replacement of cement in the concrete samples. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis shows that changes in the elemental composition of the concrete samples is related to the effect of CBA which enhances adhesion in the concrete. SEM analysis show that, in general, the change in microstructure in the concrete was mainly due to the change in the arrangement of the C-H-S compounds. The microstructure analysis indicates that CBA in concrete influences the densification of the concrete at the transition zone, resulting in a much lower porosity. This results in the concrete having a tightly bound layer that repels ingress of water and thereby inhibiting cracks and gel formation as water is a contributing factor to the ASR in concrete.

Opis:
Speech segmentation is the process of dividing speech signal into distinct acoustic blocks that could be words, syllables or phonemes. Phonetic segmentation is about finding the exact boundaries for the different phonemes that composes a specific speech signal. This problem is crucial for many applications, i.e. automatic speech recognition (ASR). In this paper we propose a new model-based text independent phonetic segmentation method based on wavelet packet speech parametrization features and using the sparse representation classifier (SRC). Experiments were performed on two datasets, the first is an English one derived from TIMIT corpus, while the second is an Arabic one derived from the Arabic speech corpus. Results showed that the proposed wavelet packet decomposition features outperform the MFCC features in speech segmentation task, in terms of both F1-score and R-measure on both datasets. Results also indicate that the SRC gives higher hit rate than the famous k-Nearest Neighbors (k-NN) classifier on TIMIT dataset.
