A graph property is any isomorphism closed class of simple graphs. For a simple finite graph H, let → H denote the class of all simple countable graphs that admit homomorphisms to H, such classes of graphs are called hom-properties. Given a graph property , a graph G ∈ is universal in if each member of is isomorphic to an induced subgraph of G. In particular, we consider universal graphs in → H and we give a new proof of the existence of a universal graph in → H, for any finite graph H.

Influenza A virus infections are the major public health concern and cause significant morbidity and mortality each year worldwide. Vaccination is the main strategy of influenza epidemic prevention. However, seasonal vaccines induce strain-specific immunity and must be reformulated annually based on prediction of the strains that will circulate in the next season. Thus, it is essential to develop vaccines that would induce broad and persistent immunity to influenza viruses. Hemagglutinin is the major surface antigen of the influenza virus. Recent studies revealed the importance of HA stalk-specific antibodies in neutralization of different influenza virus strains. Therefore, it is important to design an immunogen that would focus the immune response on the HA stalk domain in order to elicit neutralizing antibodies. In the present study, we report characterization of a conserved truncated protein, potentially a universal influenza virus antigen from the H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza A virus strain. Our results indicate that exposure of the HA stalk domain containing conserved epitopes results in cross reactivity with different antibodies (against group 1 and 2 HAs). Additionally, we conclude that HA stalk domain contains not only conformational epitopes recognized by universal FI6 antibody, but also linear epitopes recognized by other antibodies.

The paper presents an analysis of a number of cognitive metaphors pertaining to the concept of mind (e.g. sanity and insanity), heart, and fire. The study has been based on the text of Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer. The paper contains a short theoretical introduction and a discussion of different linguistic and psychological approaches to issues related to figurative and literal, conventional language use. The analytical part focuses on the detailed contextual study of the cognitive metaphorical concepts. It is argued that many apparently similar concepts can evoke semantically conflicting metaphors, while concepts that appear to be mutually exclusive can sometimes evoke common associations and thereby similar metaphors.

A class ℱ of universal algebras is called a formation if the following conditions are satisfied: 1) Any homomorphic image of A ∈ ℱ is in ℱ; 2) If α₁, α₂ are congruences on A and $A/α_{i} ∈ ℱ$, i = 1,2, then A/(α₁∩α₂) ∈ ℱ. We prove that any formation generated by a simple algebra with permutable congruences is minimal, and hence any formation containing a simple algebra, with permutable congruences, contains a minimum subformation. This result gives a partial answer to an open problem of Shemetkov and Skiba on formations of finite universal algebras proposed in 1989.

Opis:
The paper deals with entry barriers induced by public aid and actual monopoly in a given market segment. The EU law on competition constitutes the subject, being seen, however, from economic perspective, which is the method of law and economics. The focus are universal services which seem to be extremely vulnerable to the monopolization of public procurement and to unfair state aid, and to rent seeking as well. The overview of legal foundations reveals the EU regulations are too soft to bring a solution to these problems. Additionally, the soft stance of EU institutions by no means makes the situation sounder. As far as universal services are concerned, the member states are free to choose agents, with constraints imposed by the EU being of definitely general nature and the rationale for this saying that these services need to be delivered even on non-profit basis if necessary. Here, we see the EU aiming at two trade-offs that is liberalization on the one hand and mission of the efficiently performed universal service on the other hand. On the EU level common rules of providing universal services are made which are to be implemented on the national level. According to the European Commission, such “division of labour” allows an action which is suitable to peculiarities of every member state. In practice, such elasticity provokes national public bodies to moral hazard. This constitutes an actual challenge for common policies in the sake of gradual and controlled liberalization. There is a prolonged conflict between member states and the EU institutions concerning the issue in which direction rules in this field should be developed. The market segment under scrutiny, precisely market for universal services, reveals how controversial role in single-European-market building may be played by big companies. Most member states are prone to prefer agents vested in their countries. This peculiar alliance is supported with administrative devices that make the preferred group relatively narrow. Thus the state conserves actual monopoly and encourages rent seeking, and demonstrates its own weakness in promoting competitive order. Under such circumstances, by contrast to the EU endeavors to promote and to control economic liberalization in the member states, both the payer (public institution) and the provider (economic agent) may present an open aversion to competition. Obviously, this status quo is in contradiction to a general trend in the EU to guarantee equal access to public procurement, also in transnational dimension. Other conflicts arise on the ground that countries differ concerning a bare need for liberalization of universal services or with respect to advancement of the reforms. In some countries liberalization is advanced which means relatively open and equal access to public procurement, including foreign agents. Other countries discriminate agents, both foreign and non-privileged home operators.

The article is focused on the problem of universal validity of moral norms and it combines them with security matters. It presents the point of view of relativism with its relative comprehension of standards, where they are conditioned by time and culture. It shows two negative examples of dealing with the universality of standards, i.e. the position of hedonism and utilitarianism. All three ethical orientations absolutely can not become the basisfor a sense of security. The article also justifies why the existence of universal standards should be discussed. Their various sources such as natural and revealed law, human nature and dignity, as well as a man understood as an aim in itself were indicated here. The article emphasises the fact that the existence of universal standards and respect for such a situation determine safe human existence. The analysis was conducted primarily on the basis of thework of one of the greatest living German philosopher Robert Spaemann. In contrast, the safety aspect harmonising with his thinking has been developed by the author of the article.

Due to their advantageous properties, universal motors are widely used in various applications and can be operated with both AC and DC voltage. Between main advantages of universal motors are their high starting torque, very compact design and high operating speed. In terms of the wide use of the universal motor, we want to analyze the impact of DC and AC power supply on the universal motor in this article. As part of the analysis, measurements were made of the influence of the AC/DC supply on the speed, torque, efficiency and electromagnetic radiation of the motor. At the end of the paper, the results of measurements on a universal motor with DC and AC power supply are presented.

This article aims to show that the universal design which developed out of different stages of including people with body and mental impairments in the full stream of life of the societies, is a highest and most civilised way of designing the human environment for everyone. It is not only the most developed way of treating human needs but also most innovative one, as the studies show. The author presents the development and progress of the tendency, specific trends in universal design and its relations with sustainability. The newest perspective for implementing the universal design is created by the aspect of the cultural inclusion, which shows the problems of integrating people of all kinds and possibilities with the societies in the light of chances for participation in the social life.

In [1] Burger and Mynhardt introduced the idea of universal fixers. Let G = (V, E) be a graph with n vertices and G' a copy of G. For a bijective function π: V(G) → V(G'), define the prism πG of G as follows: V(πG) = V(G) ∪ V(G') and $E(πG) = E(G) ∪ E(G') ∪ M_{π}$, where $M_{π} = {u π(u) | u ∈ V(G)}$. Let γ(G) be the domination number of G. If γ(πG) = γ(G) for any bijective function π, then G is called a universal fixer. In [9] it is conjectured that the only universal fixers are the edgeless graphs K̅ₙ. In this work we generalize the concept of universal fixers to the convex universal fixers. In the second section we give a characterization for convex universal fixers (Theorem 6) and finally, we give an in infinite family of convex universal fixers for an arbitrary natural number n ≥ 10.

The purpose of the article is to provide a theoretical and empirical analysis of a universal basic income, with a particular emphasis on the origin and results of introducing this instrument. In the text, research methods are used based on literature studies in macroeconomics and economic policies as well as statistical and descriptive methods based on the data published by international economic institutions (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development and the World Bank).

Influenza is a global health concern. The single most effective way of protecting people against influenza infection and disease is vaccination. However, currently available vaccines against influenza induce only strain-specific immunity, and do not elicit long-lasting serum antibody titers. Therefore, they are ineffective in the case of possible pandemics. There is an urgent need for a new generation vaccine which would induce broad and long-lasting immune protection against antigenically distinct flu viruses. The paper presents recent achievements and the challenges in the field of universal vaccine construction.

Opis:
Competitive swimmers have a high incidence of breaststroke-related knee injuries. The cause of the breaststroke swimmer’s knee, which is accompanied with medial pain of the knee joint, has not been clearly identified. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the biomechanical and anatomical factors which predispose subjects to injury. This study includes 60 breaststroke and crawl swimmers (16 ±3.2 years old) who have participated in 3–6-year-long swimming training in Tabriz city. The knee pain was evaluated with McGill’s pain questionnaire, and Q angle was measured with universal goniometry by knee radiography in standing position. The medial pain of knee joint increased significantly and the knee was only symptomatic when the swimmers performed the whip kick. Breaststroke swimmers were hardly able to complete training because of the knee pain. It is concluded that competitive training of breaststroke swimming for 6 months can cause exclusive injury and pain in swimmer’s knee. On the other hand, the result showed that there is a direct relationship between the swimmer’s Q angle amount and chance of the knee injury. This emphasizes a scrious consideration of Q angle states in breaststroke swimmers.

Opis:
This paper aims to bring theoretical linguistics and cognition-general theories of learning into closer contact. I argue that linguists’ notions of rich Universal Grammars (UGs) are well-founded, but that cognition-general learning approaches are viable as well and that the two can and should co-exist and support each other. Specifically, I use the observation that any theory of UG provides a learning criterion – the total memory space used to store a grammar and its encoding of the input – that supports learning according to the principle of Minimum Description-Length. This mapping from UGs to learners maintains a minimal ontological commitment: the learner for a particular UG uses only what is already required to account for linguistic competence in adults. I suggest that such learners should be our null hypothesis regarding the child’s learning mechanism, and that furthermore, the mapping from theories of UG to learners provides a framework for comparing theories of UG.
