Opis:
Fluffy layer suspended matter (FLSM) and surface sediment samples from the Pomeranian Bay were examined for fatty acid, lipid and organic matter contents. FLSM is a several-centimetre-thick layer of fairly concentrated particulate matter lying on the sea floor significantly affecting the flux of matter to depositional basins. Analyses of fatty acids were used to establish sources and decomposition rates of labile organic matter along a transect from the shallow, highly dynamic, Odra estuary to the Arkona Basin, a deep, low energy, depositional area. In FLSM and sediments respectively, the ranges of organic matter contents were 4.0–25.0% and 5.1–23.0%, those of lipids 0.1–5.4% and 0.30–1.67%, and those of fatty acids 50–991 μg g−1 dry wt. and 100–546 μg g−1 dry wt. In shallow waters, the contents of these compounds are very variable, mirroring variations in biological activity and hydrological conditions. The high percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids in shallow areas indicates the presence of fresh, undegraded, labile organic matter of autochthonous origin. Fatty acids, the most labile components, are transported as suspended matter attached to minerals and finally accumulated in the depositional area in the form of condensed organic macromolecules. The intensity of bacterial decomposition of organic matter in this system is reflected in the high percentage of branched fatty acids. The low fatty acid content in the organic matter is attributed to the high rate of decomposition of the labile organic matter. No linear correlation was found between the contents of fatty acids and lipids.

Opis:
The Kendal Regency area is one of the areas on the northern coast of Central Java that has been experiencing rapid industrial development. The high human activity in this area will impact the quality of water in these surrounding areas and affect the fertility of the waters. The concentrations of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and total suspended matter (TSM) are major water quality parameters that can be retrieved using remotely sensed data. The retrieval satellite of the 3 OLCI chosen in this study has a 300 m spatial resolution. This study aimed to see the distribution and effect of total suspended matter (TSM) on chlorophyll-a based on measurement and retrieval of Sentinel 3 imagery using the linear regression method. The results show the chlorophyll-a distribution and the value from retrieval satellite are higher and occur over larger surface area compared to chlorophyll-a measurements. The linear regression model of chlorophyll-a by retrieval satellite imagery and measurement is y = 0.65x + 4.65 with R2 = 0.54. The presence of high amounts of suspended solids in the waters causes disturbances in the reflectance values, which are recorded by the retrieval of satellite. The model regression chlorophyll-a with TSM accuracy from retrieval satellite results in the equation y = -0.0416x + 5.14 (R2 = 0.45, p = 0.05, n = 13). The determination (R2) coefficient value is 0.445, which means that suspended solids have a 44.5% effect on chlorophyll-a and 55.5% is influenced by other factors and not examined in this study. The results show that TSM has an influence on the accuracy of chlorophyll-a and retrieval satellite recording can be disrupted if waters have high turbidity.

Opis:
Przedstawiono problemy związane z bilansowaniem ładunku zawiesiny i chromu w zlewni zbiornika Czorsztyńskiego w oparciu o dostępne dane z monitoringu jakości wód płynących. Pozyskane z bazy wyników monitoringowych dane, dotyczące wielkości przepływów i stężeń zawiesiny, uzupełniono wynikami badań dotyczących stężeń chromu w wodzie i zawiesinie.
The paper presents problems related to the estimation of the suspended matter and chromium loads based on the available monitoring data. The upper Dunajec watershed (West Carpathian Mountains, Poland) is an excellent small system to examine the chromium budget, since it remains the only serious metallic contaminant in this watershed. Chromium is discharged from the local tanneries, where is used as a tanning agent. Due to the improper tannery wastewater management, pre-treated or raw wastewater is discharged into local sewers or directly into the Dunajec River or its tributaries. The existence of an impoundment reservoir in the watershed (Czorsztyn Reservoir), constructed to protect the area against the recurrent flood events, presents its role in the chromium transport within this system. The chromium budget calculations were based mostly on the state monitoring data. The obtained from the monitoring agencies dataset consisted of flows and suspended matter concentrations. These data were supplemented with water and suspended matter chromium concentrations obtained in the research program, carried in the watershed in 2000-2001. The budget calculations, based on the regression equations, estimated the suspended matter load for a dozen or so thousand tons in the year with the average flow. Acting as a sink for chromium introduced mostly with the suspended matter, the reservoir creates a barrier preventing transport of contaminated sediment to the lower part of the river. Chromium accumulation load for this watershed was around 10 tons per year. Recurrent patterns of chromium load delivery can pose an increasing threat for the Czorsztyn Reservoir. The current study proves that estimating the contaminants loads, based on the existing monitoring data, is charged with the big uncertainties due to the low frequency of monitoring data.

An original method for estimating the concentration of chlorophyll pigments, absorption of yellow substance and absorption of suspended matter without pigments and yellow substance in detritus using spectral diffuse attenuation coefficient for downwelling irradiance and irradiance reflectance data has been applied to sea waters of different types in the open ocean (case 1). Using the effective numerical single parameter classification with the water type optical index m as a parameter over the whole range of the open ocean waters, the calculations have been carried out and the light absorption spectra of sea waters tabulated. These spectra are used to optimize the absorption models and thus to estimate the concentrations of the main admixtures in sea water. The value of m can be determined from direct measurements of the downward irradiance attenuation coefficient at 500 nm or calculated from remote sensing data using the regressions given in the article. The sea water composition can then be readily estimated from the tables given for any open ocean area if that one parameter m characterizing the basin is known.

Opis:
Fluffy Layer Suspended Matter (FLSM) is a layer of fairly concentrated suspended matter resting on the sea floor. Its passage to the depositional basins in the Pomeranian Bay – Arkona Deep System of the Baltic Sea is estimated to take around six months. In the course of this migration, the properties of FLSM change as a result of ageing and the influx of fresh particles from the water column, and possibly also because of mass exchange with the uppermost sediment layers. Measurements of radioisotopes (210Po, 210Pb, 137Cs) have demonstrated that in shallow water this topmost layer of sediments, from 8 cm to 3 cm in thickness, is subject to mixing. This creates redox profiles favourable to biota and bioturbation. Basing on 210Pb/210Po disequilibria and the 210Po excess, it was estimated that under steady state conditions from 1.5 to 2.2% of fine fraction (FSF) in the mixed layer of sediments is freshly imported from FLSM. This implies replacement of FSF from the sediments and its incorporation into FLSM. On the assumption that the surface density of FLSM is 10 mg cm−2, FSF freshly exported from sediments actually comprises up to 15% of FLSM. Therefore, the properties of FLSM are strongly influenced by the processes taking place in the sediments, although FLSM by definition is independent of sediments.

Opis:
In this paper we compare the following MERIS processors against sea-truthing data: the standard MERIS processor (MEGS 7.4.1), the Case 2 Regional processor (C2R) of the German Institute for Coastal Research (GKSS), and the Case 2Water Properties processor developed at the Freie Universit¨at Berlin (FUB). Furthermore, the Improved Contrast between Ocean and Land processor (ICOL), a prototype processor for the correction of adjacency effects from land, was tested on all three processors, and the retrieval of level 2 data was evaluated against sea-truthing data before and after ICOL processing. The results show that by using ICOL the retrieval of spectral reflectance in the open sea was improved for all processors. After ICOL processing, the FUB showed rather small errors in the blue, but underestimated in the red −34% Mean Normalised Bias (MNB) and 37% Root Mean Square (RMS). For MEGS the reflectance in the red was underestimated by about −20% MNB and 23% RMS, whereas the reflectance in the other channels was well predicted, even without any ICOL processing. The C2R underestimated the red with about −27% MNB and 29% RMS and at 412 nm it overestimated the reflectance with about 23% MNB and 29% RMS. At the outer open sea stations ICOL processing did not have a strong effect: the effect of the processor diminishes progressively up to 30 km from land. At the open sea stations the ICOL processor improved chlorophyll retrieval using MEGS from −74% to about 34% MNB, and TSM retrieval from −63% to about 22% MNB. Using FUB in combination with ICOL gave even better results for both chlorophyll (25% MNB and 45% RMS) and TSM (−4% MNB and 36% RMS) in the open Baltic Sea. All three processors predicted TSM rather well, but the standard processor gave the best results (−12% MNB and 17% RMS). The C2R had a very low MNB for TSM (1%), but a rather high RMS (54%). The FUB was intermediate with −16% MNB and 31% RMS. In coastal waters, the spectral diffuse attenuation coefficient Kd(490) was well predicted using FUB or MEGS in combination with ICOL (MNB about 12% for FUB and 0.4% for MEGS). Chlorophyll was rather well predicted in the open Baltic Sea using FUB with ICOL (MNB 25%) and even without ICOL processing (MNB about 15%). ICOL-processed MEGS data also gave rather good retrieval of chlorophyll in the coastal areas (MNB of 19% and RMS of 28%). In the open Baltic Sea chlorophyll retrieval gave a MNB of 34% and RMS of 70%, which may be due to the considerable patchiness caused by cyanobacterial blooms. The results presented here indicate that with the MERIS mission, ESA and co- workers are in the process of solving some of the main issues regarding the remote sensing of coastal waters: spatial resolution; land-water adjacency effects; improved level 2 product retrieval in the Baltic Sea, i.e. the retrieval of spectral reflectance and of the water quality products TSM and chlorophyll.

Opis:
The present paper dealt with the annual dynamics of the absorption coefficient of chromophoric dissolved organic matter at 440 nm {aCDOM(440)} during February 2015 to January 2016 in the continental shelf of northern Bay of Bengal (nBoB) for the first time. Sea surface salinity (SSS), chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), total suspended matter (TSM) were also analyzed. It was hypothesized that CDOM should exhibit significant spatial and temporal variability in this region. aCDOM(440) and spectral slope ranged between 0.1002 m1—0.6631 m1 and 0.0071 nm1— 0.0229 nm1 respectively during the entire study period. Higher values of aCDOM(440) were observed in the near shore stations and gradually decreased towards the offshore. Significant seasonal variability of aCDOM(440) was observed between the monsoon and non-monsoon seasons ( p < 0.05). Thus the framed hypothesis was successfully accepted by means of the present study. The CDOM was mainly found to be of allochthonous character in this region. aCDOM(440) portrayed a significant negative linear relationship with SSS (R2 = 0.80; p < 0.05) implying conservative mixing of marine and terrestrial end members. However, examining the spatial variability of the relationship, it was observed that this relationship was significant only in the nearshore stations. While examining the seasonal variability of this relationship, it was found to be most significant during the monsoon (R2 = 0.81; p < 0.05). Thus it was inferred that whenever the SSS gradient was higher, the relationship between aCDOM(440) and SSS was found to be most significant.

Owing to the high toxicity of cadmium (Cd) towards biota and the considerable quantities of this element entering the environment from anthropogenic sources, interest in its biogeochemistry is increasing. This is also true for the marine environment, which serves as a sink for both natural and anthropogenic Cd loads entering the hydrosphere and the atmosphere. The distribution of Cd in the coastal zone of the marine environment is governed primarily by the flux of the so-called fluffy layer suspended matter (FLSM), which spreads across the top of the sea floor as a several-centimetre-thick layer containing highly concentrated suspended matter. Both total contents and solid speciation of Cd was measured in FLSM collected in the Pomeranian Bay – Arkona Deep system (Western Baltic Proper) in the course of the three-year-long study. Seasonal changes in the total Cd content (0.5–1.8 μg g−1 dry matter) were attributed to the contribution of organic suspensions originating from algal blooms. The decreasing content of Cd in FLSM offshore is due to the input of Cd-rich suspended matter from the River Odra (Oder), and the decreasing organic matter content in FLSM with increasing depth. The contribution of labile fractions (adsorbed and bound to iron(III) hydroxides) was found to be from 50 to 75% of the total content. In view of the substantial mobility and bioavailability of the fractions, this is a highly alarming feature.

Opis:
Content of heavy metals is strongly dependent on the composition of suspendend particulate matter (SPM). Metals contamination of the aquatic environment can be natural origin as well as is a result of human activities. SPM is an important indicator of processes occurring in the basin. Mineralogical and geochemical identification and determination of the origin of the suspension components is necessary to evaluate the role of SPM in the accumulation and transport of trace metals in Odra river. Research were carried in the Upper and the Middle Odra River and its tributaries. SPM samples were analyzed with SEM-EDS application and metals in water and SPM were determined by ICP-MS. Result of SEM-EDS shows the presence of carbonates – mainly calcite, silicates – especially quartz and feldspars as well as illit. Obtained results allowed to recognize a variety of plankton species. It should be noted that very common in SPM feldspar and quartz contain relatively low amount of metal, as opposed to clay minerals that are responsible for the pollution. In SPM samples the presence of significant quantities of anthropogenic dust were recognized. Observed metal pollution of the Odra river basin is dangerous because of their toxic nature and the threat to living organisms. Suspended matter seems to be one of the best indicator of antropogenic pollution in riverin system.
Dodatkowo przeprowadzono badania Ca, K i Mg. Stężenia pierwiastków wynosiły odpowiednio 71,5 mg/dm3, 8,77 mg/dm3, 18,37 mg/dm3. Równolegle autorka prowadziła szczegółłowe badania ilość zawiesiny i zawartość w niej metali. Badania wykazały znaczne zanieczyszczenia Cd, Zn i umiarkowane pozostałymi metalami ciężkimi (Pb, Ni, Cr, Fe, Cu, Mn) i As.

From a data set of observations of Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) concentration, Turbidity in Formazin Turbidity Unit (FTU) and fluorescence-derived chlorophyll-a at a mooring station in Liverpool Bay, in the Irish Sea, we investigate the seasonal variation of the SPM: Turbidity ratio. This ratio changes from a value of around 1 in winter (minimum in January— February) to 2 in summer (maximum in May—June). This seasonal change can be understood in terms of the cycle of turbulence and of the phytoplankton population that affects the nature, shape and size of the particles responsible for the Turbidity. The data suggest a direct effect of phytoplankton on the SPM:Turbidity ratio during the spring bloom occurring in April and May and a delayed effect, likely due to aggregation of particles, in July and August. Based on the hypothesis that only SPM concentration varies, but not the mass-specific backscattering coefficient of particles bbp *, semi-analytical algorithms aiming at retrieving SPM from satellite radiance ignore the seasonal variability of bbp * which is likely to be inversely correlated to the SPM:Turbidity ratio. A simple sinusoidal modulation of the relationship between Turbidity and SPM with time helps to correct this effect at the location of the mooring. Without applying a seasonal modulation to bbp *, there is an underestimation of SPM in summer by the Ifremer semi-analytical algorithm (Gohin et al., 2015) we tested. SPM derived from this algorithm, as expected from any semi-analytical algorithm, appears to be more related to in situ Turbidity than to in situ SPM throughout the year.

The Maximum Chlorophyll Index (MCI), developed for the MERIS sensor processing scheme, is used to investigate the seasonal dynamics, spatial distribution, and coverage of cyanobacterial blooms over Lake Peipsi (Estonia/Russia) and Lake Võrtsjärv (Estonia). In these optically complex waters, the amounts of suspended matter and dissolved organic matter vary greatly and independently of the phytoplankton biomass. We demonstrate that MCI is a useful, new tool for detecting and estimating cyanobacterial biomass (R2 = 0.73), phytoplankton biomass (R2 =0.70) and chlorophyll a concentration (R2 = 0.64). The MCI-derived results are consistent with known patterns of phytoplankton dynamics in these lakes, whose optical properties are in the same range as in many coastal regions of the Baltic Sea.
