    The main sources of waste generation are: industry, municipal sector, and agriculture. Municipal waste is solid and liquid waste that arise in households, public utilities (trade, services, handicrafts) and municipal services (e.g. street cleaning and maintenance of green areas). The main aim of this paper are the analysis of the flow of municipal solid waste in Łódź Metropolitan Area, its composition, presentation of the process towards a more selective waste system, and the extraction of biodegradable waste from the MSW. The article is based on a report prepared within the Horizon 2020 project REPAiR “Resource Management in Peri-urban Areas: Going Beyond Urban Metabolism”.

    Problemy instytucjonalizacji Obszarów Metropolitalnych, utrudniają efektywne zarządzanie nimi w wielu kwestiach, w tym na płaszczyźnie organizacji transportu zbiorowego. Poruszane w pracy zagadnienia, o charakterze geograficznym, mają na celu diagnozę wpływu działalności Miejskiego Przedsiębiorstwa Komunikacji w Łodzi (MPK) (głównego wykonawcy w zakresie organizacji transportu publicznego przez Prezydenta Łodzi) na kształtowanie się Łódzkiego Obszaru Metropolitalnego (ŁOM). W celu uzyskania diagnozy konieczne jest przeanalizowanie przestrzennego i demograficznego zasięgu oddziaływania MPK Łódź (w oparciu o zagadnienie dostępności mieszkańców do przystanków). Dodatkowo przeanalizowano efektywność w oparciu o częstotliwość i czas przejazdu. Badanie oparto na metodologii umożliwiającej maksymalny, zdaniem autorów, stopień obiektywizmu przy tego typu badaniu. Trudność wyboru sposobu, w jakim powinno badać się zasięg przestrzenny oddziaływania przystanku, wynika z charakteru sieci osadniczej ŁOM. Stąd też wyniki analiz oparto na trzech sposobach delimitacji granic zasięgu ekwidystanty, wykreślającej przestrzeń, która może być ujęta jako zasięg oddziaływania przystanku, skąd realizowane są połączenia MPK. Przeprowadzone badania mają na celu lepsze rozpoznanie problematyki i wskazanie potrzeb ich kontynuacji. Lepsze zrozumienie tych zjawisk zwiększy potencjał aplikacyjny podobnych badań. W świetle konfrontacji przeprowadzonych badań z analizami dotyczącymi spójności ŁOM, sieć połączeń realizowanych przez MPK należy uznać za słabą i wymagającą bardzo daleko idących usprawnień. Większość gmin sąsiadujących z Łodzią ma z nią dość dobre połączenia. Sytuacja ta pogarsza się jednak w miarę oddalania od miasta, gdzie wciąż znaczna część mieszkańców nie ma dostępu do możliwości bezpośredniego przemieszczania się za pomocą zintegrowanego systemu komunikacyjnego. Wyniki badań umożliwiają wysnucie tezy, iż MPK, jako realizator zadań Zarządu Dróg i Transportu w Łodzi w zakresie organizacji lokalnego transportu, w tym momencie nie stanowi znaczącej roli w kształtowaniu się Obszaru Metropolitalnego.
    Problems of the Metropolitan Areas institutionalization impede effective management of these areas in many aspects, including organization of public transport. The paper aims at the analysis and diagnose of the impact of the Municipal Transport Company in Łódź (MPK) on the formation of Łódz Metropolitan Area (ŁOM). In order to study this problem and make a diagnosis it is necessary to examine the spatial and demographic impact of the Łódź Transport Company (based on the issue of the transportation accessibility to bus’ and tram’s stops).The article presents also the analysis of the efficiency of Łódź Transport Company based on the frequency and transfer time of its vehicles. The research was based on the most objective – in the author’s opinion – methodology. The difficulty to select the appropriate method is related to the character of the Łódź Municipal Area settlement. Therefore, the results of the analyses are based on three ways of the delimitations of equidistant scope boundaries which can be recognized as the extent of the impact of the bus and trams connections. The studies aim to better identification of municipal transportation problems. Better understanding of these phenomenons will increase the application potential of similar studies. In terms of this paper and studies on the coherence of Łódź Metropolitan Area, the transport connections organized by the Łódź Municipal Transport Company can be regarded as ineffective and requiring very far–reaching improvements.

    Systemy informacji przestrzennej stają się coraz powszechniejszą formą prezentacji i zarządzania danymi o charakterze przestrzennym. Obszarem wykorzystania systemów informacji przestrzennej są również gminy, gdzie za pomocą tych narzędzi można podejmować decyzje strategiczne oraz wydawać szereg decyzji administracyjnych. Artykuł prezentuje wyniki badań ankietowych przeprowadzonych w sześciu urzędach miejskich Łódzkiego Obszaru Metropolitalnego. Analiza wyników badań, przedstawiona w artykule, ma na celu wskazanie grupy docelowych użytkowników systemów informacji przestrzennej. Dzięki temu możliwe staje się określenie zakresu wiedzy urzędników na temat możliwości i kierunków wykorzystania informacji przestrzennej w różnych obszarach funkcjonowania miasta. Badania weryfikują, czy w wydziałach i referatach urzędów miast zajmujących się gospodarką przestrzenną, gospodarką nieruchomościami, infrastrukturą, rozwojem gospodarczym, promocją gminy, urbanistyką i zarządzaniem kryzysowym wykorzystywane są systemy GIS. Przeprowadzone wywiady bezpośrednie wskazują również, jak wiele obszarów zarządzania gminą może zostać wspartych przez wykorzystanie systemów informacji przestrzennej.
    Geographical information systems are becoming increasingly common form of presentation and spatial data management. Area of use of geographical information systems are also gminas, where with the help of these tools it is possible to make strategic decisions and make a lot of administrative decisions. The paper presents results of studies conducted in six urban gminas of the Łódź Metropolitan Area. Analysis of research results, presented in the article, allow to identify target groups of users of geographical information systems in gminas. In this way it becomes possible to determine the scope of information about the opportunities and directions for use of spatial information in many different areas of the city which officials have. The research verify if in the departments dealing with land use planning, real estate, infrastructure, economic development, promotion and crisis management officials use the geographical information systems. Direct interviews indicate how many areas of community management can be supported through the use of GIS.

    The aim of the paper is to discuss spatial aspects of internetization of selling hotel rooms in metropolitan area of Łódź in Central Poland. However, only direct distribution channels were considered. Investigated hotels were divided into three groups referring to their ability to use Internet in direct selling activities. First group was established by the hotels most advanced in using Internet. Being advanced was understood as selling hotel rooms by online reservation systems. Hotels used to promote their services by their own website belonged to the second investigated group. It must be noted that mentioned enterprises presented full offer on their own websites, including detailed price information. However, they forced the clients to use phone, fax or email to complete the reservation process. Finally, the third studied group was established by the hotels without any experience with using Internet as a direct selling tool. Significance of three mentioned hotel groups was investigated both in spatial (metropolitan area of Łódź) and in time context (2009–2015 period).

    Celem artykułu jest szczegółowa analiza wydatków inwestycyjnych na infrastrukturę edukacyjną, poniesionych przez gminy Łódzkiego Obszaru Metropolitalnego. Zakres czasowy badania obejmuje lata od 2007 do 2013 roku, a więc miniony okres programowania Unii Europejskiej. Dzięki podjętym badaniom autorzy, po pierwsze, zidentyfikowali znaczenie inwestycji w infrastrukturę edukacyjną w polityce inwestycyjnej gmin Łódzkiego Obszaru Metropolitalnego. Po drugie, ocenili jakość planowania strategicznego i finansowego w zakresie rozwoju i modernizacji infrastruktury edukacyjnej w badanych gminach. Autorzy w swoich badaniach wykorzystali opracowaną wcześniej metodologię analizy planów strategicznych gmin oraz budżetów gmin i sprawozdań z ich wykonania (Napierała i in. 2013). Zdiagnozowano plany gmin w zakresie rozwoju i modernizacji infrastruktury edukacyjnej oraz zweryfikowano realizację owych zamierzeń. W analizach pokazano specyfikę inwestycji zrealizowanych w różnych typach gmin: wiejskich, miejskich i miejsko-wiejskich.
    The main goal of the paper is to analyze municipal investment expenditures for educational infrastructure in Lodz Metropolitan Area. Presented research was conducted for the period between the years 2007 and 2013, the last Multiannual Financial Framework of European Union. The authors identified significance of investments in educational infrastructure for municipal policy in Lodz Metropolitan Area. Moreover, they assessed the quality of strategic and financial municipal planning for development of educational infrastructure in the studied area. The authors used their own, earlier depicted methodology of complex analysis of municipal strategies, budget plans and financial statements (Napierała et al. 2013). Municipal goals of investment expenditures for educational infrastructure were identified. Moreover, the authors verified whether or not the purposes were achieved. Furthermore, specificity of investments were depicted for various types of municipalities: rural, urban and urban-rural.

    This paper is an overview, and its aim is to identify published research works on tourism in Łódź and around the city as well as the tourism trips of the city’s inhabitants. This target allowed around 100 articles to be gathered which have been divided into eight thematic groups and analysed for merit. Their names are the titles of subchapters: the city’s tourism resources, land use planning, tourism space, the tourism activity of the citizens of Łódź, the tourism product – tourism development strategies, and tourism research of surrounding areas in the metropolitan area of Łódź. In the final part, the author divides the research into stages leading up to an explanation of the current development of research on Łódź and its metropolitan area and then suggests further research directions.

    Współczesne miasto jest bardzo zróżnicowane społeczno – przestrzennie. Na podstawie badan wielu socjologów i geografów powszechnie znana jest teza o istnieniu silnych relacji miedzy bezrobociem i przestrzenia. Podstawowym pytaniem badawczym jest: w jaki sposób / za pomocą jakich narzędzi można skutecznie i obiektywnie zidentyfikować hotspoty bezrobocia w przestrzeni miasta? Obszarem badanym w poszukiwaniu hotspotów w Łodzi była Strefa Wielkomiejska. Jest to obszar stanowiący centrum miasta, który obejmuje swym zasięgiem zabudowę historyczną, stanowiącą obszar tożsamości miasta. W  artykule dokonano przeglądu technik GIS, dzięki którym można dokonać wyróżnienia hotspotów. Okazało sie, że najlepiej dopasowane hotspoty uzyskano przy zastosowaniu grupowania hierarchicznego metoda najbliższego sąsiada oraz estymacji gęstości jądrowej. Zgodnie z oczekiwaniami najbardziej naznaczone bezrobociem okazało się ściśle centrum Łodzi. Ze wszystkich zidentyfikowanych w Strefie Wielkomiejskiej miejsc koncentracji najwięcej bezrobotnych mieszkało na obszarze hotspotu, którego centralne miejsce zajmuje ul. Wschodnia.
    The modern city is greatly socio-spatially diverse. On the basis of accomplishments of many sociologists and geographers, it is a commonly known thesis that there exists a strong relationship between unemployment and space. The basic question of the research is: In what manner, or using what tools, can one effectively and objectively identify places of concentration (hotspots) of unemployment in city space? The part of Lódz studied in the study was the Metropolitan Area – the area which makes up the city centre and includes historical buildings that represent the city’s identity. In the article, a review of GIS techniques is made, thanks to which one can differentiate concentrations of unemployment. It turns out that the most accurate hotspots were obtained by employing the hierarchical grouping method with the nearest neighbour technique and the kernel density estimation. In accordance with the expectations, the very centre of Lódz turns out to be affected by unemployment the most. Of all the places of concentrated unemployment identified in the Metropolitan Area, the hotspot with the highest number of unemployed was found in the area along Wschodnia Street.

Direct study was conducted from March to August 2012 among 171 entrepreneurs who are running businesses in the Lodz Metropolitan Area.

    Opis:
    Small and medium-sized enterprises are the engines of market economies. In Poland, their position has been growing since the beginning of the transition, especially due to the fact that they stimulate economic growth, but also because they play an important role in the society. The paper shows the economic and social role of small and medium-sized enterprises in the Lodz Metropolitan Area (LMA). The analysis has been subjected to their size, ownership, legal forms, business sector structure, concentrati on in the LMA, average wages and the share of particular powiats and LMA in the employment during the global financial crisis. Due to the relatively large share of manufacturing in economic activities of SME, their branch structure in powiats has also been discussed. The analysis showed that SME in the LMA dominate, in terms of quantity, the rest of the Lodz voivodship, although their share in employment and investments is a bit less than 50%. The LMA residents are more entrepreneurial, both as compared to the Lodz voivodship and to the entire country. In all powiats of the LMA the main business activity is manufacturing. The Lodz powiat dominates in the LMA in terms of all analyzed indicators, i.e. the entrepreneurship of residents, the number of SMEs, their investments, the highest average wages and the share in employment, but the structure of the business, including manufacturing, does not differ from other the LMA powiats.

    Opis:
    The Lodz Metropolitan Area (LMA) is usually singled out based on functional and spatial relations among the city of Lodz and 4 neighboring counties (poviats). The statistics on the LMA are generally available for the counties and sub regions but are scarce for the area as a whole. Therefore the article aims to present the socio-economic situation of the LMA at the end of the last decade and assessing trends in its development. It analyses factors that are important for economic growth, namely structure of the economy, labor market, investment, entrepreneurship, foreign capital inflows, innovations and institutional environment. The level of economic development within the LMA differs a lot, meaning that its counties have different resources and objectives. These disproportions have increased in recent years due to spatially dispersed inflows of the EU structural funds and of FDI. The growth prospects will be threatened by an adverse demographic situation, low innovativeness and weak institutions but will be supported by good entrepreneurial spirit of the local inhabitants.
