    Błoński and the texts of French cultureThe article is devoted to Jan Błoński’s connections with French literature and culture. Błoński, a Francophile and expert on France, repeatedly wrote about the greatest French novelists and playwrights. He also showed interest in twentieth-century French philosophy and French literary criticism (i.a. criticism of consciousness) and was engaged in translation and popularization activities as well. In the French texts of culture he has seen model forms of experiencing the modern cultural, historical and civilisation transformations. However, it did not prevent him from keeping the critical approach to many phenomena present in the French culture. The author of the article thus shows both the main areas of interest and fascination of the critic, as well as those phenomena in contemporary French literature and theory to which Błoński retained far-reaching scepticism.

    W przekonaniu autorki Andrzej Żuławski jest jedynym polskim reżyserem, który w swej twórczości podlega daleko idącym wpływom kultury francuskiej. Urodził się w 1940 r., we Francji spędził lata dzieciństwa i wczesnej młodości (jego ojciec, Mirosław, był radcą kulturalnym w Ambasadzie RP /1945-1949/, potem pracował w Paryżu, reprezentując Polskę w UNESCO /1956-1965/), tam skończył liceum (1957), studia w IDHEC (1958-1959) i studiował filozofię na Sorbonie (1959-1960). Przesiąkał – zapewne zarówno świadomie, jak i nieświadomie – wpływami kultury i mentalności francuskiej. Istotnym tego dowodem jest szokująca (nie tylko w polskim odbiorze) poetyka jego filmów. Badacze poszukiwali jej korzeni w różnych źródła inspiracji. Zdaniem autorki można ich także upatrywać w Le Théâtre du Grand Guignol – paryskim teatrze o specyficznym stylu i repertuarze, który istniał w latach 1897-1963 i wywarł wielki wpływ na kulturę – popularną, ale nie tylko – brytyjską i amerykańską, w tym także na horror filmowy w różnych krajach. Jednak – co bardzo ciekawe kulturowo – w ogóle nie przejawił się w polskim teatrze i kinie. Stachówna próbuje udowodnić, że filmowy styl Andrzeja Żuławskiego może mieć także związek z poetyką widowisk w Grand Guignolu.
    According to the author Andrzej Żuławski is the only Polish director, who in his work is subject to far-reaching influence of the French culture. He was born in 1940, and spent his childhood and early youth in France (his father, Mirosław, was a cultural counselor at the Polish Embassy /1945-1949/, then he worked in Paris, representing Poland in the UNESCO /1956-1965/). This is where Andrzej finished lycee and studies at the IDHEC (1958-1959) and studied philosophy at the Sorbonne (1959-1960). He immersed himself both consciously and unconsciously in French culture and mentality. We find a proof of it in the shocking (not only in the Polish perception) poetics of his films. Researchers searched for its roots in various sources of inspirations. According to the author one may also find them in Le Theatre du Grand Guignol - a Parisian theatre with a specific style and repertoire that existed in the years 1897-1963 and had a great influence on the culture both popular and otherwise, in Britain and America, and on film horror in many countries. But - what is very interesting culturally - had no influence on Polish theatre or film. Stachówna tries to prove that Andrzej Żuławski’s film style can also be connected with the poetics of the shows at the Grand Guignol.

Artykuł jest propozycją lektury dzieł Andrzeja Kijowskiego, będących zapisem pobytu pisarza w stolicy Francji – eseju Sezon w Paryżu oraz fragmentów dziennika. Autor artykułu skupia się szczególnie na intelektualnym aspekcie tych doświadczeń, rekonstruuje polityczne diagnozy autora-bohatera, analizuje jego postrzeganie relacji pomiędzy rodzimą kulturą a kulturą zachodnioeuropejską, w szczególności francuską. Intelektualny ferment, w jakim zobaczył Francję pochłoniętą „wojną algierską”, Kijowski odczytuje nie tylko jako doniosły fakt o znaczeniu politycznym, ale i jako okazję do przyjrzenia się aktualnej kondycji kultury współczesnego mu Zachodu, wreszcie i kondycji (moralnej, intelektualnej) jego mieszkańców. Sezon w Paryżu – inaczej niż dziennik – staje się ostatecznie pochwałą kultury jako zjawiska na swój sposób „niesterylnego”, niepoddającego się racjonalizacji. Najbliższa owej wizji okazuje się w ocenie pisarza kultura francuska. Autor artykułu wskazuje na podobieństwa niektórych wniosków pisarza do diagnoz formułowanych dziś ramach badań postkolonialnych nad Europą Środkową i Wschodnią.
    Michał Kopczyk, DEDALUS’ GRIN. ANDRZEJ KIJOWSKI’S CONFRONTATIONS WITH PARIS. “PORÓWNANIA” 1 (24), 2019. Vol. XXIV, P. 147-162. ISSN 1733-165X. The article offers a reading of Andrzej Kijowski’s works which constitute a record of the writer’s stay in the capital of France – the essay Sezon w Paryżu [A Season in Paris] and fragments of his diary. The author of the article focuses especially on the intellectual aspect of these experiences, reconstructs the political diagnoses of the author-protagonist, analyses his perception of the relationship between his native culture and that of Western Europe (especially of France), and the condition of both at the time. The intellectual dimension of the texts is closely bound with their personal dimension, as can be seen for example in the way that A Season in Paris praises culture – and the human being – as particularly “non-aseptic” phenomena, resisting rationalization. The intellectual ferment in which the visitor found France, engrossed in the “Algerian war,” became in this perspective an equivalent of the reevaluations provoked in the writer by his journey. The author of the article points to the similarities between the writer’s diagnoses and those formulated today within the framework of postcolonial research on Central-Eastern Europe.

    Tekst jest rozdziałem wydanej w roku 1981 książki La nuit des proletaires, będącej rozszerzoną wersją rozprawy doktorskiej Jacquesa Rancière’a. Kwestia emancypacji robotników w okresie następującym po porażce rewolucyjnego zrywu w lipcu 1830 roku stanowi centralny problem tekstu. Autor nie komentuje jednak toczonych ówcześnie walk o władzę. Emancypacja ujęta zostaje tu od strony wysiłków podejmowanych na polu estetyki. Estetyczna identyfikacja, ludowe widowiska, oddolna prasa, dobór lektur czy nawet wystrój mieszkania przedstawiane tu są jako pełnoprawne narzędzia emancypacyjnych starań. Rancière pokazuje, że robotnicza kultura, jakkolwiek synkretyczna i pełna zapożyczeń, okazywała się wystarczająco subwersywna, by skutecznie przekraczać klasowe podziały.
    The text presented here is a chapter from Jacques Rancièreʼs La nuit des proletaires, an extended version of the author’s doctoral thesis. It focuses upon prospects for workers emancipation following the unsuccessful revolutionary attempt of July 1830. Rancière does not comment on struggles of power and instead, emancipation is seen here mostly as an intervention into the aesthetic. Aesthetic identification, popular spectacles, grassroots press, the selection of readings and even the design of rooms are all presented as genuine tools of the emancipatory effort. Rancière shows that workers culture, although syncretic and full of calque, turned out to be subversive enough so as to undermine class divisions.

    Przywołanie obrazu średniowiecznej zabudowy kolebki stolicy Francji stanowi podstawę do namysłu nad charakterem jej utraconego religijnego i kulturowego dziedzictwa nie tylko w wymiarze materialnym, ale i duchowym, oraz nad wymową ideową nieistniejącej już sfery sacrum, w przeszłości zdecydowanie wyróżniającej się spośród świeckiej zabudowy wyspy. Świątynie miały nie tylko znaczenie religijne, lecz także polityczne i propagandowe. Przechowywane w nich święte relikwie, a szczególnie sprowadzona z Konstantynopola na paryską wyspę przez św. Ludwika IX w 1239 roku Korona Cierniowa, podniosły Paryż do rangi nowej ideowej stolicy cesarstwa. Wezwania kościołów upamiętniające pierwszych galijskich świętych wskazywały, jak fundamentalna dla początków chrześcijaństwa we Francji była wyspa. Bogata sfera sacrum podnosiła prestiż miasta, świadcząc zarówno o pobożności, jak i zamożności jego mieszkańców. Strefa sacrum Île de la Cité stanowiła istotę dawnej francuskiej religijności, w której była zakorzeniona cała tradycyjna kultura tego narodu.
    Conjuring up the image of the medieval buildings in the cradle of the capital of France triggers reflection on the nature of its lost religious and cultural legacy both in the material and spiritual aspect. It also evokes thoughts on the ideological significance of its – no longer existing – sacral architecture, which stood out from other buildings on the island. The temples were important not only from the religious perspective but also from political and propaganda ones. Holy relics kept in them, especially the Crown of Thorns brought to the island from Constantinople by King Louis IX in 1239, elevated Paris to the rank of a new ideological capital of the empire. Dedicating churches to the first Gallic saints can be viewed as evidence of the significance of the island at the dawn of Christianity. Its opulent sacral architecture raised the prestige of the city and proved both its religiosity and prosperity. Sacral architecture of Île de la Cité was the essence of old French religiosity in which the whole traditional culture of France was rooted.

    In Polish literature devoted to art history one can easily find information concerning scholarships of Oskar Hansen, Lech Kunka, Kazimierz Ostrowski and Tadeusz Romanowski at Fernand Léger Atelier in Paris. The subject is not strongly present in Polish art history therefore it is worth reconstruction. It shows that the French culture was still very important for Poles. What is more, the painters were in Paris at the very important moment in the French history, when existentialism and spectacular activity of the French Communist Party were developing. Abstraction and surrealism were very popular in visual arts. But Polish students were influenced by artists associated with communism. The students received scholarships funded by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs which worried about strong influence of American culture in Europe at this time. That was the reason why so many students from Eastern Europe got this kind of scholarship. On the other hand it was the last moment to get it. The relations between two countries were getting worse and worse. The Polish students could study at the Academy of Fine Arts for free. Nevertheless, they chose the Fernand Léger Atelier. It is possible to reconstruct the nature of studies at the Fernand Léger Atelier thanks to memoirs of his students. I refer here to texts written by the Pole, Oskar Hansen, the Frenchman, Pierre Faniest and the American, Bruce Gregory. The master attended the atelier only once a week therefore the school was managed by his assistants strongly influenced by communist ideology. The atelier was located at a large building in Montmarte and was full of still lifes à la Léger. Most of students imitated the works of the master and only strong individuals kept their style. Correction of the works was quite bizarre. Léger used to say just one sentence and the best not one could get was „C'est costaud” („It's strong”). The master gave also lectures at the Atelier, showed his works and avant-garde films. Every year Léger organised the competition and exhibition of students’ works at the gallery outside Atelier. The scholarship at the Fernand Léger Atelier was particularly important for Lech Kunka and to a lesser extent for Kazimierz Ostrowski. Kunka was interested in the master’s works created during his stay in the United States (paintings where colour was separated from the line). He mixed also features of Léger style (thick black contour with pure colours) with fascination with Pablo Picasso or works from the Museum of the Human Being. Kazimierz Ostrowski was mainly inspired by the work Les Constructeurs. He mixed influences of Fernand Léger with Klee or Matisse's works. Probably also mural paintings created by both artists after return to Poland were under influence of Fernand Léger. The end of the French scholarship was astonishing. Kazimierz Ostrowski's exhibition in Sopot in 1950 was closed after few hours. Oskar Hansen didn’t take part in Polish artistic life. The cultural policy changed diametrically. The socrealism came and in the next few years nobody could take advantage of foreign scholarships.

    The article comprehensively presents French art and literature in a socio-cultural weekly magazine that was published between 1944 and 1950, and that was considered to be one of the most prominent magazines in post-war Poland. Its widespread reach and open attitude towards culture that was reflected in “Odrodzenie” (contrary to Marxist approach represented in “Kuźnica”) influenced opinion-forming processes greatly and also shaped new literary canon. It was edited by Karol Kuryluk followed by Jerzy Borejsza — both editors had been genuinely involved in French culture since youth, hence the presence of writers and artists from that circle was explicit. Considering the amount of texts, “Odrodzenie” consisted mostly of Russian literature and also of French literature, that, having more artistic value, was ahead of English and Italian writings. Those proportions were also influenced by Aragon, Picasso and Eluard who were leftist and who were close friends with Kuryluk and Borejsza. Those connections were natural for both editors and they confirmed particular place that Poland took on the verge of Western and Eastern cultures. The transition that started to happen around 1948 and the processes that inhibited artistic freedom lead to a shift in the attitude towards Western culture which also included French culture. The beginning of Social Realism terminated artistic freedom and ended the publishing of “Odrodzenie” that was then perceived as too liberal. The magazine had printed classic writings by authors such as Diderot, Hugo, then-forgotten symbolists such as Verlaine, Rimbaud, and also by current writers that were gradually recognized in Polish culture.

    The article is a reflection on the symbols through which the modern experience of cultural belonging is expressed and on the motivations behind their contestation. Examples of selected themes that Marcin Świetlicki and Barbara Gruszka-Zych explore in their writing are used to examine the poetic quest to overcome feelings of alienation in one’s own cultural milieu. In spite of the differences between the two poets, both address the problems facing the contemporary consciousness of Western man, split between the desire to complete the process of deconstructing his own universal “identifying signs” and the need to creatively explore the process of symbolization itself. The issue of “internal acculturation,” as a particular case within the topic of acculturation as a whole, is also correlated to examples drawn from Francophone poetry.
