Opis:
Background: As dental technicians are exposed to a variety of airborne chemicals that can act as irritants and sensitizers, and may give rise to work-related respiratory symptoms, the aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of respiratory symptoms of exposure to substances in the workplace and associated risk factors in dental laboratory technicians. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed among 539 dental technicians in the Plovdiv region using a self-report questionnaire. A multiple logistic regression analysis was performed in order to investigate the relationship between sex, work experience, daily exposure to chemicals from the dental environment, and a history of atopic disorder with work-related respiratory symptoms. Results: A total of 539 dental technicians completed the questionnaire. The prevalence of self-reported work-related respiratory symptoms was 26.2%. Based on logistic regression, the most significant factors associated with work-related respiratory symptoms were daily exposure of >8 h (OR = 5.83, 95% CI: 1.96–17.34) and the lack of a ventilation system (OR = 4.26, 95% CI: 2.39–7.58). Dental technicians with work experience of <5 years more often reported work-related respiratory symptoms (OR = 1.83, 95% CI: 1.14–3.44) compared to those with long-term exposure of >20 years. A personal history of asthma (OR = 3.74, 95% CI: 1.39–10.07), allergic rhinoconjunctivitis (OR = 2.10, 95% CI: 1.29–3.41) and atopic dermatitis (OR = 2.32, 95% CI: 1.23–4.38) was also associated with work-related respiratory symptoms. Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that work-related respiratory symptoms are frequent among dental technicians and occur early in their career. A more comprehensive study should be conducted throughout the country in order to estimate the prevalence, and to establish effective programs and techniques of preventing work-related respiratory symptoms in dental technicians. Opis:
Background. Cereal grains and their products are among the basic components of the diet all over the world. Their consumption varies depending on the dietary habits in each country. Apart from ingredients valuable from a health point of view, these products can also be a source of contaminants. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) included these foodstuffs in the group of main contributors to the dietary exposure to nickel by different groups of the population. Objective. The aim of the studies was to determine the nickel content in cereal grains and selected cereal products commercially available in Poland and to assess the exposure of consumers to nickel intake with these foodstuffs. Material and methods. A total of 56 samples of cereal grain and cereal products from trade were tested. Nickel content was determined after microwave mineralization of the samples by atomic absorption spectrometry with a graphite furnace atomization (GFAAS). The estimated exposure for the different groups of the population was assessed and compared with the Tolerable Daily Intake (TDI) value established by the European Food Safety Authority based on an updated risk assessment at 13 μg/kg body weight (b.w.) per day. Results. The mean (MB) and 95th percentile (MB) nickel content in investigated samples of cereal grains and their products were 0.66 mg/kg and 1.93 mg/kg. The mean content of Ni in the analyzed samples of grains was 1.16 mg/kg. Obtained results in this group of products ranged from 0.10 mg/kg for rye to 4.80 mg/kg for millet. In the group of grain products, the mean (MB) concentration of nickel was 0.61 mg/kg (95th percentile (MB) 1.84 mg/kg). The highest nickel level was determined in the samples of bran, groats, and flakes compared to other grain-based products. The highest content of Ni in the group of cereal products was found in the samples of roasted buckwheat 1.81 mg/kg and oat flakes 2.53 mg/kg. Significantly lower nickel content was observed in barley groats as well as for pasta and flour. The estimated average exposure of adults and children to nickel intake with grains and grain-based products ranged from 1.1% to 13.4% of TDI and it does not pose a health risk for consumers. Conclusions. Based on the obtained results, it was found that the nickel content in the tested samples of cereals and their products does not pose a health risk, even though the contamination of individual samples was significant

Opis:
Generally, the choice of cutting element used in brush cutters for brush-woods and grasses depends on the type of work on one hand and the size of the engine on the other. However, at the same time, the use of individually chosen cutting elements entails a certain risk of vibration resulting from their varying design and size, which has a big impact on comfort and working time, but most importantly on operator health. The aim of the study is a preliminary analysis of the dangers due to vibration of brush cutters and to determine how the choice of the cutting element affects the intensity of the vibrations emitted by the machine. Furthermore, one aim was to determine the daily vibration exposure, relative to an equivalent value of vibration, experienced by the device operator. This study involved four models of brush cutters with three machines of each model, differing in size (displacement and engine power) and equipped with six different cutting elements. A vibration acceleration test was carried out in accordance with the applicable PN-EN ISO 5349-1 and 2: 2004 and Directive 2002/44 / EC. An analysis of the obtained results leads to the conclusion that the examined professional brush cutters emit vibrations of such intensity that the daily exposure limit (5 m ∙ s-2) is exceeded more than twofold. One cannot directly determine the influence on vibration intensity by the type of cutting element or the exhaust, but it should be noted that use of a cutting unit as recommended by the manufacturer creates less harmful vibrations, especially when the engine runs at the nominal rotational speed. In order to minimize the risk due to vibrations from brush cutters, engines with a cylinder capacity below 45 cm3 are recommended to be equipped with trimmer heads and disk knives, while engines with over 50 cm3 should run with circular saws.

Opis:
The wide use of bisphenol A (BPA) as a monomer in plastics manufacture or epoxy resins intended for food contact materials (FCM) has triggered numerous concerns due to toxicological findings indicating possible endocrine disrupting properties. This article traces the evolution of the scientific opinions since 1986 when the Tolerable Daily Intake (TDI) for BPA and its specific migration limit (SML) from plastic FCM into food were proposed for the first time by the Scientific Committee for Food (SCF). Resent extensive scientific studies concerning refined data on toxicity and exposure to BPA from food and non-food sources (eg. dust, cosmetics, thermal paper), including the most vulnerable groups of population, allowed the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) to reduce the TDI of BPA from previously 50 μg/kg bw/day to now 4 μg/kg bw/day. EFSA’s latest scientific opinion published in 2015 concludes that basing on the current estimations of total exposure to BPA from dietary and non-dietary sources for infants, children and adolescents is below the temporary TDI of 4 μg/kg bw/day. EFSA has also underlined that BPA poses no health risk at the estimated exposure levels of any population age group, including unborn children and the elderly. However, EFSA has indicated that some data on exposure and toxicological effects still require clarifications.

Opis:
The paper presents some aspects of relations between modern plant protection of apple orchards and ecotoxicology. Based on significant similarity of the shape and size of apple and tomato fruits the relation between the doses of active ingredients of plant protection products and their residue levels immediately after treatment was derived for the apples and then quality indices and the risks for human health were estimated. It was found that many of the currently in force MRLs need to be revised and the exposure of consumer should not exceed the acceptable daily intakes (ADIs) and acute reference doses (ARfDs) for pesticide residues.
