Artykuł poświęcony jest wyodrębnieniu i wstępnemu opisaniu typu predykacji ontologiczno-retorycznej, którą można nazwać mortyfikacją. To szczególna, paradoksalna modalność animizacji, mechanizm służący orzekaniu obumierania, martwoty lub braku życia w odniesieniu do bytów żywotnych oraz bytów, przedmiotów, zjawisk i czynności, którym poza rejestrem figuratywnym nie przypisuje się atrybutu żywości. Mortyfikacje opierają się na analogii proporcjonalności oraz analogii atrybucji, także relacji o charakterze homologicznym między rejestrami faktycznym oraz symbolicznym.
The purpose of this article is to isolate and preliminarily describe a type of ontologicalrhetorical predication that can be labeled as ‘mortification.’ It is a peculiar and paradoxical modality of animation, a mechanism upon which dying, deadness or lifelessness are predicated of animated beings as well as beings, objects, phenomena, and actions that are not, apart from figurative modes of language, attributed with the quality of vitality. Mortifications are based on the analogy of proportionality and attributions and also on the homologous relation between the real and symbolic register.

W artykule poddano interpretacji Nową Atlantydę Francisa Bacona, odczytując ją jako hipertekst projektu odnowy nauk (Instauratio Magna), którego filozofowi nie udało się w pełni zrealizować. Autor podejmuje próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie, jaki model relacji między rejestrami dyskursywnym, retorycznym i literackim legł u początków nowożytnego kształtowania nauki. Jego zdaniem nauka empiryczna nie ustanawia swojego początku wyłącznie własnymi nowymi narzędziami, wykorzystuje natomiast sobie współczesne wzorce fikcji narracyjnej (np. ramę modalnościową opowieści podróżniczej), retorycznego prawdopodobieństwa (oraz alegorii) i siłą wynikającą z ich kompozytu nadaje spoistość własnej genezie.  
The article interprets New Atlantis by Francis Bacon and reads it as a hypertext of Instauratio Magna, the project of restoration of sciences, which the philosopher failed to carry out fully. The author seeks to discover the interrelations between the discursive, rhetorical and literary modes of writing that shaped the early stages of modern science.  In his opinion, empirical science does not establish its starting point only with its own new instruments, but it also deploys contemporary patterns of narrative fiction (for example, the modal frame of travel story) and rhetorical probability (also allegory). The power of this composite renders its own origin coherent.

The objective of this article is to briefly describe the ways in which aquatic and nautical metaphorics functioned in the seventeenth-century literature and philosophy in regard to meta-scientific discourse. The paper’s compositional frame is the reference to the interwar writings of Juliusz Kleiner. Firstly, I point out that the category of “life” along with the metaphors of “water” and “fluidity” he used, were ontologised and, in fact, refer to the undifferentiated domain of primal factuality that is located beyond the symbolic registers, ahead of the hermeneutic moment. Secondly, I hold that figures and concepts which appear in Kleiner’s writings, not necessarily refer solely to the French and German modern philosophy at the turn of the 19th and 20th century, as the sources of analogous conceptualisations: figurative and conceptual are to be found also within the seventeenth-century British meta-scientific discourse.The article’s axis is an analysis of selected writings of Francis Bacon, Thomas Hobbes and William Shakespeare concerning the ways they applied aquatic and nautical metaphorics. The article indicates how the mountainous space is articulated in Cosmos in its “logical-underground” manner. The gradual occurrence of random improbabilities permeates the novel. In addition, the book reveals marked differences in how tangible matter is represented in its first part (the guest house events) and in its description of the Tatras. Eventually, the journey of the living protagonists ends under the mass of inanimate matter, thus obliterating the cohesion of human and animal world, and even of corporeality as such. This is how the human polarity – the improbable – demonstrates itself and how it multiplies indefinitely.

After the Treaty of Vilnius (1561), the process of gradual inclusion of Livonian nobility to the administrative and political structures of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and later of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth began. With the creation of the Inflanty Voivodeship in 1677, the Livonian nobility of German origin began to Polonise / Lithuaniseand return to Catholicism. The bond between the Livonian families and the Polish-Lithuanianstate began their great careers and political activities at the central level. The participation of “Teutonic” families in the public matters in the 18th century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was measured through the senate offices and the legations. The greatest number of senatorsin the 18th century came from the Plater family, followed by Hylzen, Tyzenhauz, Zybergs and Grothuz families. Among the Livonian deputies, members of the Plater and Tyzenhauz family dominated, while the rest of the families gained much less seats.

Artykuł poświęcony jest analizie metaforyki geograficznej użytej przez Ephraima Chambersa w jego Cyclopædia (1728). Angielski cyklopedysta dokonał nałożenia topiki geograficznej oraz kolonialnej na systemowe podziały świata wiedzy i nauki. Cyclopædia, tj. nowoczesna, osiemnastowieczna encyklopedia wyrastająca z ducha brytyjskiego empiryzmu ma nie tylko gromadzić dotychczasową wiedzę, jej istotniejszą cechą jest to, że musi orientować się również względem tego, co jeszcze nieznane, niepoznane. Połacie świata nieobjętego jeszcze poznaniem zostają w ten sposób usankcjonowane jako wewnętrzne terytoria przestrzeni encyklopedycznej.
The aim of this article is to analyze the geographical metaphors used in Ephraim Chambers’ Cyclopædia (1728). The English cyclopaedist combined the geographical and colonial rhetorical figures with the systematic divisions of knowledge and science. Cyclopædia, which is the modern 18th-century encyclopaedia rooted in the spirit of British empiricism, does not only collect the existing knowledge but also aims to reach out to what is yet unknown, unrecognized. Thus, the parts of the world which are unknown and unchartered become validated as internal territories of the encyclopaedic space.

The paper describes a system for monitoring and diagnosing a gantry. The main goal of the system is to acquire, visualize and monitor vibration levels of the gantry crucial elements. The system is also equipped with a computing and analytical part which enables predictive maintenance related to the vibration level assessment. The system architecture can be used in other applications too, i.e. those which require a wireless network of vibration sensors to carry out diagnostic tasks.
W artykule przedstawiono system monitorowania i diagnostyki suwnicy bramowej. Głównym zadaniem systemu jest akwizycja, wizualizacja i monitorowanie poziomu drgań newralgicznych elementów suwnicy. System wyposażony jest również w część obliczeniowoanalityczną, umożliwiającą realizację zadań predykcyjnego utrzymania ruchu (ang. predictive maintenance) związanych z oceną poziomu drgań. Architektura systemu umożliwia wykorzystanie go również do innych zastosowań, w których dla realizacji zadania diagnostyki wymagana jest bezprzewodowa sieć czujników drgań.

This paper presents a study of vibrations appearing in a vehicle in the process of its operation. The authors describe the primary source of the vibrations and their propagation in the entire structure. The observations were performed on the passenger cars with various gasoline and diesel engines. The aim was to examine the level of damping factor in the different locations in the car, precisely specified for the purpose of this studies. The secondary goal was to develop an effective method of obtaining and analyzing signals generated during the engine operation. The chosen instrument was Laser Doppler Vibrometer (LDV), which is used as the non-intrusive measurement utensil to detect velocity variations in designated places. The signals are gathered and collected as group of sinusoidal characteristics in the time domain. In order to achieve specific information about every component of the original signal, the authors apply Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) as the analyzing method. It allows to distinct the basic sinusoidal characteristics in the frequency domain through the spectral analysis. Based on the results, the authors are able to distinguish the dominant modes from the complex signal and indicate their impact on the car.

In the article, the authors analyze the effect of a fuel mixture (iso-octane, butanol and ethanol) on the generation of engine vibrations. The paper presents the results in the form of frequency response (using the Fast Fourier Transform - FFT) for three mixtures of different proportions. The measurements were made with the use of accelerometers and data acquisition cards, conditioning the received signal. The vibration component, in the form of acceleration, will be subjected to a FFT and presented in graphical form (periodogram). The authors put a special emphasis on a comparative analysis, indicating changes in harmonics, which may be a potential cause of engine degradation.
