Opis:
Our increasing economic relations with China provide an opportunity to compare raw materials economies in both countries. They are completely different. A modern form of raw materials management in China is based on scientific analyses of universities and research institutes which, at their own initiative, submit their proposals to the Chinese Government. They are numerous in every issue, and even conflicting as regards the methods, conclusions and purposes. The Government selects the best options, providing broad and comprehensive justification for each of them. This method has brought to China a worldwide investment success in raw materials economy. If we want to cooperate with China in thisfield, it is worthwhile to take advantage of its experience in this matter.

Opis:
W artykule krótko scharakteryzowano światowe rynki podstawowych surowców do produkcji stali, tj. rudy żelaza i węgla koksowego.
The article briefly characterizes global markets for basic raw materials for steel production, i.e. iron ore and coking coal. The current situation on the steel market is presented as well as its impact on the development of commodity markets, and forecasts of prices in international trade. Weak growth prospects for the global economy are a key reason for the weakness of most of the prices of industrial raw materials. The slowdown of economic growth in China and its possible impact on the demand for raw materials and consequently their prices, raises great concern. This is particularly true in the case of raw materials that China is a very significant consumer of on a global scale. For the metallurgical raw materials markets (iron ore, coke, coking coal) the situation of the steel sector in China, which accounts for half of world crude steel production, is an important indicator for forecasting the future economic situation, especially since the country is the world’s largest importer of iron ore and coking coal. The slowdown in China’s economy include the effect of government policies aimed at changing the economic model based on investment and production to one based on domestic consumption and services. Although China currently records the slowest growth of its economy in 25 years, it will remain a major driving force for global economic growth.

The ethanol production industry is a fast growing branch of the economy in many countries, and there is a rich tradition of spirit beverage production of many unique drinks such as Polish vodka and Starka or Irish and Scotch whisk(e)y, all of which have unique organoleptic features. This variety is possible thanks to different raw materials used for production such as rye, barley or corn and potatoes, as well as technological solutions developed over the generations of manufacturing. Rye deserves a closer look due to its low growth requirements and many different uses as well as its long tradition of cultivation, especially in Poland. On the other hand, manufacturers are currently interested in using new, original raw materials for the production of so-called craft alcohols. Buckwheat is an example of a raw material that can be successfully used in the production of original spirits.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine the possibility of using the unconventional vegetable oils for the biofuel production. The research material were cold-pressed oils from the seeds of milk thistle, hemp and evening primrose. After conducting the initial physicochemical characteristics of oil samples, including the determination of sulphur content, acid number, viscosity at 40°C, density at 15ºC, oxidation stability and fatty acid composition, analysed oils have been subjected to the transesterification process. The roduced methyl esters were further characterized by the above-mentioned features. Additionally, the temperatures of cold filter plugging point, cloud point and flash point were determined. On the basis of the conducted analyses it was demonstrated that the obtained oils, due to the high, far in excess of acceptable, values of the viscosity and density, and too low oxidative stability could not be used as a pure fuel. A similar conclusion was formulated in case of the produced methyl esters.

This article is dedicated to the instrument such as raw materials convertible bonds, the application of which in the mining industry can increase the efficiency of mining investments and, consequently, contribute to the improvement of the economic and financial market of mineral resources. Bonds with the option of conversion into raw materials bring relevant benefits to both the investor – the bondholder who buys these bonds, and to the mining company as the issuer. The use of this debt instrument increases the efficiency of mining investments, mainly by lowering the cost of capital in relation to traditional sources and by flexibility of being able to convert the capital debt into raw materials. Due to the fact that the article is illustrative only, and its goal is just to present a relatively new instrument, which are raw materials convertible bonds, the author focused an attention on its possible use in the financing of investments in the mining industry and the potential economic effects of such a solution. In order to identify the likely financial benefits, discussed debt instrument was compared with selected sources of funding, such as ordinary bonds and simple bank loan. Due to this fact, the article doesn’t present the consideration of every aspect associated with the bond that has an option, but is mainly focused on its main attribute, which is the ability to convert debt into raw material. The paper presents the general assumptions regarding the raw materials convertible bonds, the advantages of this solution and the requirements that the issuer of such instrument will have to cope with. The article contains also a diagram showing the use of a raw materials convertible bonds in the tripartite agreement. The final part of the publication shows an example of a calculation comparing the newly presented instrument to the ordinary bonds and bank loans. The summary presents the conclusions of the analysis of the possible use of raw materials convertible bonds as an instrument of financing investments in the mining industry.

Opis:
Eco-composites based on natural raw materials such as polylactide and plant fibres (e.g. flax, hemp, jute) show many important features which enable them to be used as potential materials for biomedical engineering. Availability of the raw materials and low costs of production, capability to enhance mechanical parameters and also controlled time of degradation in the environment allow considering them as materials for rehabilitation equipment, orthopedic supplies or materials for medical packages. Such materials due to the presence of the natural fibres provide higher comfort during their utilization and then they undergo safe biodegradation which is non-harmful for the environment [1,2]. The work presents attempts on fabrication of composites based on polylactide (PLA, Ingeo 3051D, Nature works, USA) reinforced with short flax and jute fibres. The fibres were mechanically comminuted to the length of 1-2 mm. Preparation of PLA/fibres mixture took part in two stages. The first one consisted in drying of the polymer granulate and the fibrous filler at 60 degrees of Celsius for 2 h. The second stage the granulate/fibres mixture was homogenized using vertical screw injection moulding machine (Multiplas). The obtained mixture was mechanically comminuted with a laboratory grinder (Testchem). Volume fraction of the fibres was nit higher then 5 %. The granulates were used to prepare PLA/natural fibres composites in the form of paddle-shaped samples (according to PN-EN ISO 527) by the injection method. The injection took place at 165 degrees of Celsius and pressure of 80 kg/cm2. The samples were subjected to hydrolytic degradation tests (incubation in distilled water at 37 degrees of Celsius, 15 weeks) and biological degradation (composting in an eco-composter, TERMO-410 with the addition of Radvit activator which contains composting bacteria and selected fungi cultures which support biodegradation and accelerate degradation of organic wastes, 15 weeks). The effect of the degradation environment on the composite material was determined on the basis of changes of its mechanical properties (tensile strength, Young's modulus) using an universal testing machine (Zwick 1453). The degradation process was monitored by FT-IR spectroscopy of the composite samples (transmission method, BioRAD 60FT). Changes related to the polymer chain degradation were assessed on the basis of viscosimetric measurements (Hoppler method). The carried out investigations proved, that during both the composting and the incubation in water a gradual degradation of the material takes place. Its visual effect was decrease of the tensile strength of the composites for about 70% for PLA/5% jute and for c.a. 10% for PLA/5% hemp and their Young's modulus for about 25 % for PLA/5% jute and for c.a. 10% for PLA/5% hemp. The changes were caused by decrease of molecular weight (Mn) of the polymer matrix from 100 to 28 kDa for PLA/5% hemp, and from 136 to 48 kDa for PLA/5% jute. The change of the polymer structure was faster in the case of degradation in water environment. This effect was related to facilitated migration of medium (water) inside the material and possibility of washing out and transport of products of the polymer chain disintegration. Additionally, the present fibrous phase which is characterized by high water absorbability may became a reservoir of both the medium and the degradation products. Biodegradation in the compost heap was slower and it was an example of synergic effect of hydrolytic degradation and biodegradation caused by the microorganisms. This process could be observed on the FT-IR spectra recorded during degradation in the compost heap, where longer composting time led to increasing disproportion between bands indicating increasing fraction of hydroxyl, carboxyl and carbonyl groups in relation to groups characteristic for PLA chain. In the case of biodegradation the process progress is related to such variable factors as: amount and type of the bacteria and fungi cultures, humidity and temperature. In conclusion, it may be stated that the proposed PLA/natural fibres composite materials are an alternative solution for many fields of biomedical engineering especially for rehabilitation and orthopedic provision.

The Polish expansion in mineral exploration is going to start with Africa. This is expressed in Government documents. Such direction is obviously welcome, but is not the most important. Chinese competitiveness in that continent is insurmountable. The Polish science was most successful in this field in the 19th and early 20th centuries in Siberia. Its achievements have been appreciated there until today, independently of political turmoil in Polish-Russian relations. This direction of the policy in mineral exploration is the most promising because this is where the world economy and policies are currently targeted. A weakness of both these options is the lack of commonly available knowledge about both Africa and Siberia, and about other areas of our interests in raw materials around the world. This should be a starting point to a debate about the Polish policy in mineral exploration abroad.

Opis:
Smectite clays, due to their barrier properties and swelling ability, are often applied for waterproofing purposes. A proper value of swelling pressure is one of the parameters, which must be met by the fillers used in hybrid waterproofing materials. The authors determined the swelling pressure of selected clay raw materials in their natural state and after chemical modification. This parameter was measured by the Komine method, as this procedure is more accurate than the standard edometric method. The authors introduced some changes in the method. The samples represent Krakowiec clays (Miocene) and a Triassic clay, collected in active pits of building clays, which are widely exploited in south Poland. The content of the smectite group minerals, determined from the sorption of methylene blue and copper(II) triethylenetetramine, ranges between 15 and 35%. Further characteristics of the clays were obtained with X-ray diffraction, chemical analyses (calcium carbonate content including) and pH measurements. It has been found that the activation of smectite clays with sodium lowers their swelling pressure as water penetrates easier the interlayer spaces of the smectites modified. This is important from the viewpoint of assessing the quality of bentonite fillers.

Balneological raw materials will fill an important role in maintaining and improving the quality of life. The increase in demand for health-resort and disturbing reports on the possible collapse of the current pension system will probably force necessity of extending the retirement age. Undoubtedly, balneological raw materials will be crucial for efficient functioning of the society by providing broader health care prolonging physical fitness of the population. The awareness of occurring and coming changes makes the authors discuss the significance of the role of mineral resources in terms of not only innovation, defence and safety but also socio-cultural and civilisation.
