The paper undertakes the issues of epidemiology, conditions, and treatment of eating disorders in men, which are not widely recognised both in Polish and international research. The text is based on desk research analysis of research reports on eating disorders. Authors discuss the issue of eating disorders in the context of gender, indicating that the clinical picture of them (including the perception of one's own body, the ways and motives for striving for a perfect figure) is mainly related to the stereotypical roles and tasks that society and culture impose on men and women. The empirical material analysis allows us to assume that ED symptoms in men are more often (than in the case of women) related to (self) stigmatisation, diagnosis difficulty, coexistent dimorphic disorders, substance addictions, and more significant physical activity.ty.

Celem niniejszego tekstu jest rekonstrukcja wybranych teorii kryminologicznych. Świadomie pomijam koncepcje o innym profilu, koncentrując się na kategorii płci kulturowej jako kluczowej. Celem moich rozważań nie jest przedstawienie całościowej wizji kryminologicznych koncepcji przestępczości kobiet lecz tylko pewnego jej wycinka. Treść narracji jest zatem częściowo reprezentatywna dla przedstawionego problemu, a w dalszych eksploracjach podejmę próbę uwzględnienia perspektyw teoretycznych w innych nurtach, które związane są ze studiami nad kobiecością (ang. gender studies).
The criminal activity of women in selected criminological theories – cultural gender contexts Abstract: The aim of this text is to reconstruct selected criminological theories. I consciously ignore concepts of a different profile, focusing on gender as a key category. The aim of my deliberations is not to present a comprehensive vision of the criminological conceptsof female crime, but only a certain portion of it. The content of the narrative is therefore partly representative of the problem presented, and in further explorations I will attempt to take into account theoretical perspectives in other trends related to studies on femininity (gender studies).

This article’s aim is to follow new directions in musicology research, that aspire to be interdisciplinary in character and to focus on cultural, analitical and critical approach to music. Almost entirely unknown to Polish readers, this research, defined as “new” musicology, refers to ethnomusicology and sociology of music’s outputs, and tries to apply some of the methods used in those disciplines to analyze classical Western music. Feminist musicology, on which I focus the most, is a still evolving, very popular in the US and at the same time very wide field of study. It’s analyses, although they are sometimes ideological, are one of the most interesting examples of widening the frames of traditional musicology, that are worth knowing. Not assuming to exhaust the topic, I find it crucial to outline the fields of research for this discipline.

Aim. The aim of the article is to reveal gender realisation peculiarities in English and German advertising texts. The concept of the research work is focused on the idea that representatives of different languages and cultures make unique world environment. The work proves the concept validity of the unique language nature in the distinctive idea of its cognitive base formed by an ethnic group. Methods. The concepts of universality and uniqueness of the linguistic and cultural features of gender perception are revealed using the methods of analysis and generalisation. Results. The result of the research work is in the necessity for advertising texts to have special gender language markers which are the kind of signal influencing the conscience of men and women while making purchases. The authors stress that social characteristics of men and women, such as age, social or family status expressed in the form of various degrees of comparison of adjectives are used mainly in English magazines; while German advertising texts put the use of adjectives and articles on the first place. Advertising for women have the set of a special expressive and emotional language tools complex while for men the use of vocabulary stressing the main type of activity of a man - energy is of the top priority. Conclusion. The research work presents cognitive value in theory and practical recommendations to gender linguistics specialising in advertising texts structure illustrating peculiar features of men and women as consumers being influenced by language, cultural, psychological characteristics.

W niniejszym artykule autor analizuje sposoby ujmowania transwestytyzmu szamanów w literaturze naukowej, by następnie przeprowadzić studium przypadku oparte na bezpośrednich badaniach terenowych. Głównym celem studium jest pokazanie, w jaki sposób zmienia się obraz pozornie bardzo podobnych zjawisk, gdy umieścimy je w szerszym kontekście kulturowym. Głównym pytaniem teoretycznym jest to, czy i na ile zasadnym jest porównywanie nietypowych sposobów ubierania się i przyjmowania nietypowych wzorów ról społecznych związanych z płcią w kulturach obserwowanych przez antropologów z podobnymi zjawiskami, które występują w kontekście cywilizacji euroamerykańskiej. Analiza dyskusji wokół tego zjawiska, a przede wszystkim próby wyjaśnienia genezy i funkcji transwestytyzmu czy wręcz transgenderyzmu szamanek i szamanów, mówią dużo o tym, w jaki sposób konstruowane jest zachodnie postrzeganie szamanizmu i samych szamanów. Są one również pouczające w kontekście międzykulturowego postrzegania płci. Analiza przypadku pokazuje, że transwestytyzm szamanki ma bezpośrednio znaczenie religijne, które opiera się nie na tym, że jest on zgodny z dążeniami, skłonnościami szamanki, ale przeciwnie, jego znaczenie opiera się na tym, że szamanka jest przez duchy do takiego zachowania przymuszana. Nie jest on wyrazem, ale przeciwieństwem jej własnej tożsamości płciowej tak na poziomie biologicznym, jak i kulturowym.
In this article the author examines the ways of describing transvestism of shamans in the scientific literature. The author extends the analysis of literature through a case study based on fieldwork. The main objective of the study is to show how the image of apparently very similar phenomena changes when we put it in a broader cultural context. The main theoretical question is whether and to what extent it is justified to compare unusual ways of dressing and adopting atypical patterns of social roles related to gender in cultures observed by anthropologists with similar phenomena that occur in the context of Euro-American civilization. Analysis of the discussion concerning this phenomenon, and above all of attempts to explain the genesis and function of the transvestite or even transgender shamans elucidates how the Western perception of shamanism and shamans themselves is constructed. They are also instructive in the context of intercultural perception of gender. The case study shows that transvestism of shaman has direct religious significance, which is based not on the fact that it conforms with the aspirations, inclinations of shaman, but on the contrary, its importance is based on the fact that the shaman is coerced by the spirits to such behavior. It is not an expression, but the refutation of her own gender and sexual identity.

This paper focuses on the issue of whether the boundaries of the private lives of judges are shaped according to cultural conditions and gender. My main assumption is that gender inequality in a culture is reflected in how the boundaries of the private life of judges are interpreted. In this regard, women judges may face more restrictions than their male colleagues in what they wear, what they do and what they say in their lives generally. And ultimately, an interpretation of private life that reinforces gender roles also limits the freedom of expression. I concretise my discussion regarding gender stereotypes that influence what judges do or say in their private lives in different cultures.

Artykuł przedstawia propozycję interpretacyjną czwartego tomu autobiograficznego cyklu powieściowego Karla Ove Knausgårda Moja walka. Powieść dostarcza interesującego materiału badawczego pod względem zobrazowanego w utworze problemu tożsamościowego i nienormatywnego pożądania związanego z erotyczną transgresją, która nie powinna zaistnieć z powodów etycznych (pożądanie względem nieletniej uczennicy). Metodologia wykorzystana w artykule sytuuje się na granicy dociekań psychoanalitycznych, teorii gender i poetyki queer.
The article attempts interpretation of the fourth volume the autobiographical cycle My Struggle by Karl Ove Knausgård. The novel provides interesting research material in terms of the identity problem and non-normative desire associated with erotic transgressions that should not be present for ethical reasons (lust for a minor schoolgirl). Methodology used in the article it is located on the border of psychoanalytic investigations, gender theories and queer poets.

The paper considers male and female images in the Yakut fairy tales as a component of cultural programming of gender behavior in a tribal society. The analysis of the Yakut fairy tales reveals that the main male characters whole being integral are represented as a rule by three types – in the image of heroes, hunters and poor men. Female images are more diverse, among them there are girls of the Upper World and udagans (shaman women), endowed with magical powers and the gift of transformation; girls of the Middle World, who can be both passive and active characters; the third group of female images is represented by old women, who are often embodied in the collective image of the old woman Simekhsin. The results of the analysis suggest that the masculine images correspond to the stereotypical male behavior patterns in the patriarchate society, while the feminine images may deviate from the accepted gender stereotypes for various reasons.

This paper concerns three significant concepts in Maria Komornicka’s writings: body, spirit and gender. The first two are closely related to each other, thus initial paragraphs are devoted to them both. On the basis of these reflections, I draw some conclusion about the image of gender created by the poet. The notion of gender is analysed in terms of Young Poland discourse of gender and from the perspective of modern methodologies: feminist criticism as well as gender and queer studies. This paper aims at encouraging the reader to reinterpret M. Komornicka’s output with contemporary awareness.

The study aimed at discovering whether gender, age, and different cultural background may be associated with procrastination. Therefore, procrastination tendencies by students of Polish nationality residing in Poland with Polish students living in Austria were compared. All participants completed the Pure Procrastination Scale that measured the degree of self-reported procrastination. Results revealed higher procrastination scores by emerging adults living in Poland than Austria. Males from the Polish diaspora reported more procrastination behaviors than females. In contrast, procrastination was higher among Polish female than male citizens. Delaying tasks were higher in older than younger respondents within the Polish sample; for students in the Polish diaspora, procrastination decreased with age.

Artykuł przedstawia wyniki badania przeprowadzonego w dziewięciu polskich liceach ogólnokształcących. Dotyczyło ono wpływu zajęć warsztatowych na temat świata islamu na stosunek do Arabów i innych narodów. Zastosowano dwie techniki pomiaru – wartościowanie muzułmanina (10 cech) oraz skalę dystansu (10-stopniowa zmodyfikowana skala Bogardusa). Oprócz zmiany postaw wobec Arabów i muzułmanów (efekt specyficzny) – warsztaty przełożyły się także na zmianę stosunku badanej młodzieży do przedstawicieli innych kultur – Romów i Indusów (efekt niespecyficzny). Istotne okazały się także różnice między płciami, dotyczące zarówno bazowego poziomu deklarowanej otwartości na Obcych, preferencji poszczególnych narodów, jak i efektów uzyskanych w obu grupach po oddziaływaniu edukacyjnym.

The aim of this research was to identify the factors differentiating gender on the one hand and, on the other hand, to check how they differentiate the level of satisfaction with selected areas of public and private life. The following research questions have been asked: what is the gender of Poles, and by which socio-demographic variables is it differentiated, do sex and gender differentiate the level of satisfaction with the selected areas of public and private life? The hypothesis investigated in the research assumed the existence of differentiation due to sex and gender. Statistical analysis was also intended to identify the possibility of the existence of an interactive effect between sex and gender which would be responsible for differentiating the level of satisfaction. The research was carried out on a representative sample of Poles aged 15-59, using the techniques of direct interview, questionnaire and The Bem Sex-Role Inventory (BSRI). On the basis of the results obtained in the research it has been concluded that the socio-demographic factors which were taken into consideration do differentiate the genders of the cohort. The relation between gender and satisfaction with the chosen areas of life has been confirmed, whereas in the case of sex such a bond has been observed only in assessment of marriage/ permanent relation and in self-assessment of physical attractiveness. The data shows that the most satisfied category, in all analyzed dimensions, are androgynous persons.
Celem badań było z jednej strony rozpoznanie czynników różnicujących płeć społeczno-kulturową, a z drugiej sprawdzenie jak różnicują one oceny zadowolenia z wybranych obszarów życia publicznego oraz prywatnego. Postawiono następujące pytania badawcze: jaka jest płeć społeczno-kulturowa Polaków i jakie zmienne społeczno-demograficzne ją różnicują oraz czy płeć i płeć społeczno-kulturowa różnicują ocenę zadowolenia z wybranych obszarów życia publicznego oraz prywatnego. Weryfikowane w badaniach hipotezy zakładały istnienie zróżnicowań ze względu na płeć biologiczną i płeć społeczno-kulturową. Analizy statystyczne objęły również sprawdzenie czy między płcią biologiczną a społeczno-kulturową istnieje efekt interakcyjny odpowiedzialny za zróżnicowanie poziomu zadowolenia. Badania przeprowadzono na reprezentatywnej próbie Polaków w wieku 15-59 lat i realizowano z zastosowaniem techniki wywiadu bezpośredniego, ankiety oraz Inwentarza do oceny Płci Psychologicznej (IPP). Na podstawie uzyskanych wyników stwierdzono, że wzięte pod uwagę czynniki społeczno-demograficzne okazały się różnicować płeć społeczno-kulturową badanych. Potwierdzono związek płci społeczno-kulturowej z zadowoleniem z wybranych obszarów życia, podczas gdy w przypadku płci biologicznej związek taki stwierdzono tylko w przypadku oceny małżeństwa/stałego związku i samooceny atrakcyjności fizycznej. Z danych wynika, że najbardziej zadowoloną we wszystkich analizowanych wymiarów kategorią osób są osoby androgyniczne.

All over the world girls are still highly underrepresented in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) subjects in school, and only a small percentage of women choose occupational careers in that field. The socially-influenced gender differences in spatial abilities – particularly in the ability to rotate two- or three-dimensional objects in one’s mind – are considered as a cognitive mediator of that gender gap. This paper gives an overview of the social causes and social consequences of the gender differences in spatial abilities. It focuses on sociocultural influences, including gender stereotypes (e.g. the phenomenon of the “stereotype threat”), and the importance of role models in family and school. Furthermore, personal factors like the ability-related self-concept and the effects of experience and training are taken into consideration. The results of empirical studies are reported which reveal that mental-rotation performance is strongly influenced by gender-specific differences in spatial experiences, role models, the ability-related selfconcept and socio-economic status. Finally, the paper discusses why and how women`s perceived lack of spatial abilities might lead to gender-typical educational and occupational choices.

This article examines how audiences engage with popular culture in ways that forge political awareness and civic engagement. Through exploring the various levels of engagement of Hungarian women with the 2017–2020 television adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale, this study answers questions such as: How do Hungarian female audiences engage with topics raised in The Handmaid’s Tale? How does their engagement with the show encourage cultural citizenship? Based on in-depth interviews with twenty-two Hungarian women, this qualitative empirical research sheds light on the role of television drama series in facilitating the manifestation of cultural citizenship as an arena of identity-construction and community-formation.
