    Social Europe, understood as a desirable political project, has been reflected in contemporary Polish political thought, especially after 2004. This paper explores the accounts of political thought of three political parties: the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD), the Polish People’s Party (PSL), and the Self-Defence of the Republic of Poland (Samoobrona RP). Their political thoughts shared emphasis on the social aspects of EU integration. According to the assumptions propagated by these parties, a social Europe would be built by incorporating the welfarestate principles to the European level, becoming a response to the multifaceted and excessive globalisation process, and offering resistance to the neoliberal agenda. All the political parties discussed here focused on the social nature of a unified Europe, and on promoting the values of solidarity, equality, freedom, justice and democracy.

    The concept of raison d’état (reason of state) is very popular in Poland, and it will apparently remain relevant as long as the Polish state exists. The idea is commonly used in official statements by politicians, political journalism, and in various government documents. Raison d’état is an ambiguous concept, which results from simplified and often popular opinions on what is and what is not the raison d’état. Conceptual chaos, intuitive judgments and notions appear to be the reason why political scientists are discouraged from systematized and in-depth studies on this political category. The paper is divided into three parts. The first part discusses definitions of raison d’état and the accompanying problems. The second one deals with the theoretical aspect covering the subjective, objective, temporal and spatial scopes of the concept. Two new definitions of raison d’état were mentioned which diminish the importance of the nation-state at the expense of international organizations. The third part presents methodological approaches in studies on raison d’état understood in two ways: as a system of vital interests of the state and as a category of political thought.
    Rację stanu rozumiemy jako system egzystencjalnych interesów państwowych realizowanych w sposób bezkompromisowy, co do których powinien istnieć konsensus głównych sił politycznych w danym państwie. Może ona być również traktowana jako osobna wartość lub kategoria myśli politycznej, wokół której budowane są wizje państwa obejmujące politykę wewnętrzną oraz międzynarodową. Analizując teoretyczne i metodologiczne aspekty racji stanu, należy stwierdzić, że cechuje ją niejasność definicyjna, duża pojemność treściowa, czasowa zmienność, trudności w określeniu katalogu interesów państwowych składających się na rację stanu, oraz różnorakie podejścia teoretyczne i metodologiczne. Wszystko to odstręcza badaczy od zajmowania się tą kategorią. Paradoksalnie owa wielowymiarowość i wieloaspektowość, połączona z polską specyfiką pojmowania raison d’état, może stanowić o jej atrakcyjności badawczej. Ciekawa z punktu widzenia teorii racji stanu jest jej współczesna ewolucja w kierunku ponadnarodowej raison d’état. Nieuniknione procesy globalizacji oraz działanie międzynarodowych i ponadnarodowych organizacji i instytucji prowadzą do uniwersalizacji racji stanu. W toku owej ewolucji zmienia się sposób rozumienia takich pojęć jak suwerenność czy bezpieczeństwo państwa (nieodzownych składników racji stanu). Suwerenność zastępowana jest przez pojęcie podmiotowości, a bezpieczeństwo nabiera coraz to nowego zakresu przedmiotowego.

    The assessment of the Polish Third Republic was undoubtedly an important plane of polarisation of the contemporary Polish political scene. After the post-communist division, in which a key role was played by the assessment of the PPR, there was a post-Solidarity division, and the dispute axis was found in the assessment of the regime and economic transformation and the state of the nation under the rule of the Democratic Left Alliance. Lack of decommunisation and only partial inspection was for many right-sided groups an evidence of the superficiality of the system transformation and an explanation of many of its imperfections. The political polarisation was further exacerbated after the Smoleńsk catastrophe of 10 April 2010. Next to the strongly emotional questions of the causes of the event, there was an increase of the number of discussions on the functioning and state of the country. The diagnosis of the political, economic and social reality of the Polish Third Republic became one of the main programme factors of the political parties before the 2005 elections. The Law and Justice party had come up with one of the most critical assessments of the Polish Third Republic. The political programme based on negating the large part of the achievements of the Polish Third Republic was the main reason of their victory in the elections. The opinion of the Polish Third Republic also divided a large part of the society. Without a critical judgement of the reality of the 2005 there would be no victory of the Law and Justice and Civic Platform – the parties that declare breaking up with the pathologies of the Polish country.

    Spór o model integracji europejskiej oraz wokół pojawiających się raz po raz propozycji reform i zmian Unii Europejskiej stały się jedną z głównych osi konfliktu w polskiej polityce. Celem artykułu jest analiza poglądów politycznych dwóch głównych podmiotów tego sporu – Prawa i Sprawiedliwości (nurt konserwatywny) oraz Platformy Obywatelskiej RP (nurt liberalny). Przedstawiciele obu nurtów ideowych, mimo znacznych różnic aksjologicznych, opowiadali się za integracją europejską. O ile PiS prezentowało postawę eurorealistyczną, o tyle poglądy polityków PO można określić mianem euroentuzjastycznych. Do ostrych sporów dochodziło wtedy, kiedy trzeba było doprecyzować zakres i zasięg integracji europejskiej oraz model UE, co de facto sprowadzało się do debaty wokół roli i znaczenia państwa narodowego w stosunkach międzynarodowych. W pracy szczególnie eksponowana jest teoretyczna warstwa myśli politycznej, gdyż akceptacja realistycznego lub liberalnego paradygmatu stosunków międzynarodowych przez badane partie była równoznaczna z poparciem dla określonego modelu Unii Europejskiej. Kluczowe wydawało się również zbadanie przydatności oraz wagi takich wartości politycznych, jak państwo i jego suwerenność, tożsamość zbiorowa czy bezpieczeństwo, a także ich związku z pożądaną wizją UE.
    The dispute over the model of European integration and around the proposals for reform and change of the European Union, which appear time and again, has become one of the main axes of conflict in Polish politics. The aim of this article is to analyse the political views of the two main actors in this dispute - Law and Justice (PiS - conservative current) and Civic Platform of the Republic of Poland (PO - liberal current). Representatives of both ideological currents, despite significant axiological differences, were in favour of European integration. While the Law and Justice party presented a Eurorealist stance, the views of Civic Platform politicians can be described as Euro-enthusiastic. Sharp disagreements arose when the scope and extent of European integration and the model of the EU needed to be clarified, which de facto boiled down to a debate around the role and significance of the nation-state in international relations. The theoretical layer of political thought is particularly exposed in the study, as the acceptance of a realist or liberal paradigm of international relations by the parties studied was tantamount to support for a particular model of the European Union. It also seemed crucial to examine the relevance and importance of political values such as the state and its sovereignty, collective identity or security and their relationship to the desired vision of the EU.

    Celem poznawczym artykułu jest analiza dwóch nurtów współczesnej polskiej myśli politycznej (narodowego i konserwatywnego) w perspektywie systemowej i problemowej przez pryzmat pożądanej pozycji międzynarodowej Polski w XXI w. Analizie poddano myśl polityczną partii politycznych − Ligi Polskich Rodzin (nurt narodowy) oraz Prawa i Sprawiedliwości (nurt konserwatywny) w dwóch jej wymiarach. Po pierwsze −  w wymiarze ideologicznym, obejmującym poglądy polityczne o największym stopniu uogólnienia. Po drugie −  w wymiarze programowym, który należy rozumieć jako zestaw konkretnych propozycji politycznych, koncepcji pożądanego ładu międzynarodowego i miejsca w nim Polski. Realizacji celu badawczego służyły odpowiedzi na postawione pytania badawcze: W jaki sposób LPR i PiS definiowały i opisywały ład międzynarodowy? Na jakich podstawach aksjologicznych chciano opierać proces kształtowania pozycji międzynarodowej Polski? Jakie role międzynarodowe przypisywali Polsce politycy obu badanych partii?
    The research objective of this paper is to analyse the trends in contemporary nationalist and conservative political thought from the system and problem-based perspectives through the lens of Poland's international status in the 21st century. The subject of the analysis is the political thought of two parties −  the League of Polish Families (representing the nationalist trend) and Law and Justice (the conservative trend) in two dimensions. First − in the ideological dimension, covering political views with the greatest degree of generalisation. Second − in the programme dimension, understood as a set of specific political proposals, creating concepts and defining the conditions for their fulfilment in the future. The research objective is to be reached by providing answers to the following research questions. How did LPR and PiS define and describe international order? What values were assigned key roles in shaping Poland's international position? What international roles were assigned to Poland?
