    This paper reports on some of the data from a large-scale study Teaching and Learning Foreign Language in lower secondary school, which began in the school year 2011-12 and traces selected groups of learners through the three years of Key Stage 3 (gimnazjum), ending in school year 2013-14. The study was conceived and is managed by the Foreign Language Section of the Educational Research Institute (ERI) in Warsaw with European funding. (see Acknowledgement). In this article the focus is on data obtained from interviews conducted with learners from class one of 120 lower secondary schools, where the students were asked to describe and give opinions about learning English in their school and to imagine an ideal lesson. The learners are the reason that lessons in school take place, but their views are rarely consulted. This study attempts to redress the balance.

    Opis:
    The Dalton Plan’s pedagogy was established by H. Parkhurst 100 years ago; but it is still valued and commonly applied in preschool and early school education. In this article; I intend to present different ways of implementing the Dalton Plan into teaching English at these stages. First; I will discuss the history of the Dalton Plan; and then I shall describe its founder and outline the main assumptions of the concept. Next; I will present how the Dalton Plan has developed worldwide; in particular in Poland; and I will discuss the current application of the Dalton Plan in the school environment. In the second part; I will present H. Parkhurst’s practical teaching strategies which can be effectively used in teaching English to children. I intend this article to be not only an inspiration for teachers teaching different foreign languages but also as an encouragement for practitioners to reflect on their work and perhaps expand their practice with new teaching strategies that would promote independence; responsibility; cooperation and reflection. Applying the Dalton Plan in everyday teaching allows teachers to personalise children’s learning and supports the development of children’s linguistic and social skills; which; in turn; facilitates the main objective of education.
    Mimo że pedagogika planu daltońskiego stworzona została przez H. Parkhurst sto lat temu; to nadal jest użyteczna i chętnie wykorzystywana w pracy z dziećmi zarówno w wieku przedszkolnym; jak i wczesnoszkolnym. W niniejszym artykule zaprezentowano sposoby wykorzystania elementów planu daltońskiego na lekcjach języka angielskiego. W jego pierwszej części przedstawiony jest zarys historyczny powstania planu daltońskiego; krótkie przybliżenie postaci twórczyni oraz główne założenia koncepcji. Następnie opisano rozwój idei na świecie i w Polsce oraz przybliżono współczesną realizację filarów planu daltońskiego. W drugiej części artykułu podano praktyczne rozwiązania; możliwe do wykorzystania na lekcjach języka angielskiego; zgodne z założeniami koncepcji H. Parkhurst. Założeniem autorki jest zainspirowanie nauczycieli języków obcych do poszukiwania nowych metod i zachęcenie ich do poszerzenia swojego warsztatu o narzędzia rozwijające u dzieci samodzielność; odpowiedzialność; współpracę oraz refleksję. Praca zgodnie z założeniami tej koncepcji pozwala na indywidualizację pracy ucznia oraz rozwój zarówno językowy; jak i społeczny; co zmierza do realizacji nadrzędnego celu; jakim jest wspieranie wszechstronnego rozwoju dziecka.

    Wychowanie chrześcijańskie w szkole to nie tylko lekcje religii. Niniejszy artykuł podejmuje kwestię wychowania chrześcijańskiego z wykorzystaniem wartościowego repertuaru muzycznego w edukacji wczesnoszkolnej na przykładzie doświadczeń ze szkoły podstawowej w Belfaście. Na wczesnym etapie edukacji, kiedy mamy do czynienia z kształceniem zintegrowanym, można w łatwy sposób nawiązywać do wartości chrześcijańskich podczas codziennych zajęć szkolnych. Czy można jednak połączyć wychowanie chrześcijańskie z nauczaniem języka angielskiego? W artykule zostaną zaprezentowane opracowania dotyczące nauki języka, a wykorzystujące utwory muzyczne, które odwołują się do wartości duchowych w rozumieniu Maxa Schelera. Nawiązując do założeń fińskiej edukacji muzycznej oraz edukacji religijnej, zostaną przedstawione wartości płynące z opisanego rozwiązania. Zaprezentowane przykłady będą omówione z wykorzystaniem odwołań do literatury, która zarysowuje szerszy obraz wychowania chrześcijańskiego we wczesnej edukacji dziecka. Pomocne będzie również odwołanie się do następujących kategorii: pedagogika katolicka, edukacja religijna, wychowanie chrześcijańskie, wartości duchowe czy też eurytmia, które leżą u podstaw teoretycznych tego artykułu.
    Christian education at school is carried out not only during religion lessons. This article deals with the issue of Christian education using the valuable musical repertoire in early school education on the example of experience gained from an elementary school in Belfast. At an early stage of education, when students have an integrated education, it is easy to refer to Christian values during everyday school activities. Is it possible to combine Christian education with teaching English lessons?The article will present studies on language learning, and using musical works that refer to spiritual values as they are understood by Max Scheler. Referring to the assumptions of Finnish music education and religious education, the values resulting from the described solution will be presented. The examples presented will be discussed using references to literature that outlines the broader shape of Christian education in early childhood education. It will also be helpful to refer to the following categories: Catholic pedagogy, religious education, Christian education, spiritual values or eurhythmics, which are the theoretical foundations of this article.

    Contemporary education presents a lot of new challenges for teachers, students and their parents. Undoubtedly, teaching a foreign languages to children diagnosed with the autism spectrum constitutes one of the challenges within the framework of inclusive education. In the case of students with disabilities, it should be remembered that appropriate conditions for students’ educational development and their individual needs are essential. In addition, the teacher must take into account the individual abilities of the student and his willingness to work, and this can only be released if the teaching process is well planned and organized. The article presents current educational regulations related to students with Autistic spectrum disorder, the characteristics of these students, the relationships in inclusive education, the tasks and competences of the English teacher, with particular emphasis on his cooperation with the supporting teacher.

    Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie udziału uczniów w (samo)kształceniu na lekcjach języka angielskiego prowadzonych według modelu partycypacyjnej kultury kształcenia. Badanie zostało osadzone w paradygmacie pragmatycznym, sięgając po ujęcie badawcze opatrzone nazwą „badania bliskiego praktyce” (close-to-practice research), z wykorzystaniem metody studium przypadku. To ujęcie umożliwiło wydobycie uczniowskiej perspektywy patrzenia na partycypację w pracy lekcyjnej i we własnym (samo)kształceniu. W wyniku badania ustalono, że uczniowie są zainteresowani i gotowi do udziału we własnym (samo)kształceniu na lekcjach języka angielskiego prowadzonych według modelu partycypacyjnej kultury kształcenia. Udział ten obejmuje trzy zakresy: wyznaczanie sobie własnych celów do zrealizowania, współdecydowanie o sposobie pracy na lekcjach oraz obserwowanie i ocenianie swoich osiągnięć. W rezultacie uczniowie eksplikują własne oczekiwania wobec nauczanego przedmiotu, potrafią odpowiedzialnie zarządzać czasem i pracą lekcyjną, traktują uczenie się nie jako działanie narzucone przez nauczyciela, lecz składową własnego (samo)kształcenia, postrzegają uczenie się jako etap (samo)kształcenia i nabywają umiejętności uczenia się uczenia.
    The aim of the article is to present students’ participation in (self-)education during English lessons conducted according to the participatory learning culture model. The study was conducted in a pragmatic paradigm, reaching for a research approach labeled “close-to-practice research”, with the use of the case study method. This approach enabled the researcher to bring to light students’ perspectives on participation in classroom work and in their own (self-)education. The study shows that students are interested and ready to participate in their own (self-)education in English lessons conducted according to the participatory learning culture model. This participation covers three scopes: setting their own goals to achieve, co-determining how they work at the lessons, and observing and evaluating their achievements. As a result, students present their own expectations of the taught subject, are able to manage their lesson work responsibly, consider learning not as an activity imposed by the teacher, but as a component of their own (self-)education, perceive learning as a stage of (self-)education, and acquire the skills to learn (how) to learn.

    We wstępie artykułu autorka przybliża definicję innowacji pedagogicznej w odniesieniu do płaszczyzny szkolnej. Następnie, omawia główne zadania szkoły (w nawiązaniu do nowej podstawy programowej kształcenia ogólnego w szkołach podstawowych z 14.02.2017r.) oraz wybrane elementy z podstawy programowej języka obcego nowożytnego II etapu edukacyjnego, ze szczególnym zwróceniem uwagi na rozwijanie umiejętności produktywnej pisania oraz kompetencji społecznych. Na koniec opisuje przykład pedagogicznej innowacji językowej o zakresie międzynarodowym „Let’s chat via Snail Mail”, wdrażanej w szkole podstawowej województwa mazowieckiego w klasach IV–VII w roku szkolnym 2017/2018.
    At the beginning of the article, the author introduces the definition of pedagogical innovation with reference to the school reality. Next, she discusses the main tasks of the school (in relation to the new core curriculum of general education in primary schools from 14/02/2017) and selected elements from the core curriculum of the modern foreign language of the second educational stage, with particular attention to developing the productive skill of writing and social competence. Finally, she describes the example of pedagogical language innovation with an international scope “Let's chat via Snail Mail”, implemented in the primary school of the Mazovian Voivodeship in grades IV–VII in the school year 2017/2018.

    Certainly, it might be difficult to imagine what the world would look like if tunes on the radio or on TV were off, or one could not listen to favourite song when working at home or driving a car. Not only do songs provide pleasure, but they also enhance language practice and positively affect vocabulary acquisition and memorisation. The author chose teaching with the use of songs as her target in the study because listening to music in English is highly motivating for students and songs are easily accessible for all learners. The prime objective of this MA thesis is to investigate whether teaching English vocabulary with the use of songs contributes to developing students’ better memorisation of vocabulary. This MA thesis consists of three chapters; the first two sections deal with a theoretical background and the third one focuses on an experiment with the use of songs at primary school.

    Participating in oral L2 communication may be challenging for English-medium higher education students. While literature suggests that scaffolding facilitates the development of L2 speaking, research has not addressed the notion of tools for scaffolding its development. The aim of this study is twofold: (1) to investigate how scaffolding can be embodied in tool design to support L2 speaking and (2) to obtain and analyse student perceptions of the tools. We draw on questionnaire data gathered in two iterations of a larger design-based research study conducted in two contexts: English Studies students in Poland (N = 26) and culturally and linguistically diverse L2 learners in Australia (N = 12). This study illustrates how features of scaffolding were applied to map instructor, peer- and technology-based tools in terms of learning activities, resources, technology and feedback. The results suggest that these tools may cater to the multiple levels of student understanding and skill with regard to the development of L2 speaking found in modern L2 classrooms.

    Artykuł omawia niektóre z form pracy z uczniem ze specjalnymi potrzebami edukacyjnymi (SPE) na lekcjach językowych (i nie tyko), wskazując na szereg istotnych aspektów, na które uważny nauczyciel języka obcego powinien zwrócić szczególną uwagę. Oprócz przedstawienia szeregu obowiązujących obecnie aktów prawnych, scalających i warunkujących tego typu formy działalności edukacyjnej, w artykule zaprezentowano sposoby pracy z tego typu uczniami (głównie zaś z uczniami dyslektycznymi) możliwe do wykorzystania w trakcie działalności językowej w klasie. W końcowej części artykułu omówiono sposoby pracy i organizacji lekcji językowej w klasie, w której oprócz uczniów dyslektycznych znajdują się także uczniowie niewykazujący tego typu zaburzeń.
    The paper discusses some of the selected forms of work with learners with special educational needs (SEN) to be delivered during (not only) foreign language classes. Apart from presenting currently mandatory legal acts that concern different forms of work with SEN learners the paper discusses selected effective pedagogical approaches possible for application during (not only) foreign language lessons. In the final part of the paper we make an attempt to analyze these forms of effective foreign language deliverance to (mostly dyslexic) learners that can be applied to pedagogically divergent learners that are commonly found in many classrooms.
