Opis:
Erazm Otwinowski — an Arian Writer by Piotr Wilczek The book is devoted to the life and literary output of the Polish Protestant writer Erazm Otwinowski (c. 1526 - 1614). He was one of the most prominent figures of the Polish Brethren Church — a radical Reformation movement also called Arianism (Unitarianism, Antitrinitarianism). In his youth Otwinowski was a Calvinist and he is the supposed author of poems published at the beginning of the 20th century as lyrics written by an “Anonymous Protestant”. In the present book, however, attention is focused on later works written by Otwinowski when he was already a Unitarian. His works are analysed in the context of biblical and theological debates of the 16th century. In the first chapter the author presents the controversies in previous research surrounding the poet’s life and also the list of works attributed to him. An attempt is made to reconstruct the poet’s biography and the actual list of works written by Otwinowski. The second chapter is devoted to links between Otwinowski’s poetry and Polish translations of the Bible. The last two chapters present a thorough analysis and interpretation of Otwinowski’s major works: Sprawy abo historyje znacznych niewiast (Affairs or Histories of Notable Women) and Przypowieści Pana naszego Jezusa Chrystusa (Parables of Our Lord Jesus Christ). A wide historical and theological background is provided. The author The author of the book, Dr Piotr Wilczek, is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Silesia (Faculty of Philology, Pl. Sejmu Śląskiego 1, 40-032 Katowice, Poland). His research focuses on the literature Renaissance and Reformation and on translatology. He has published several articles and some Polish translations of English works.

Opis:
In this article we will present the Leibniz-Mycielski axiom (LM) of set theory (ZF) introduced several years ago by Jan Mycielski as an additional axiom of set theory. This new postulate formalizes the so-called Leibniz Law (LL) which states that there are no two distinct indiscernible objects. From the Ehrenfeucht-Mostowski theorem it follows that every theory which has an infinite model has a model with indiscernibles. The new LM axiom states that there are infinite models without indis-cernibles. These models are called Leibnizian models of set theory. We will show that this additional axiom is equivalent to some choice principles within the axio-matic set theory. We will also indicate that this axiom is derivable from the axiom which states that all sets are ordinal definable (V=OD) within ZF. Finally, we will explain why the process of language skolemization implies the existence of indis-cernibles. In our considerations we will follow the ontological and epistemological paradigm of investigations.

Opis:
Piotr Wilczek Discourse — Translation — Interpretation Early Modern Polish Literature and its Impact on Contemporary Polish Culture This book examines methods of explicating and interpreting literary texts and traditions in Early Modern Polish Literature and the manner in which the literature of this period has been interpreted by later generations. Not only are literary texts discussed, but also discourses inspired by these texts in religious polemics, translations and interpretations. The first part of the book concentrates on the work of Jan Kochanowski as a poet in the ancient tradition, a translator of Latin texts, and an author of a body of poetic works translated into modern languages. The first chapter discusses Kochanowski’s indebtedness to the Horatian poetic tradition. The second chapter deals with Kochanowski’s dialogue with Greek, Roman and biblical traditions in Treny (Laments) and the third chapter deals with the problems faced by twentieth century translators into English stemming from the multicultural context of his works. The second part of the book is devoted to religious polemical pamphlets of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. It presents an analysis of the role of the biblical and theological tradition and discusses the creation of a new rhetorical language of polemical discourse. The third part of the book examines the twentieth century critique of Polish Renaissance and Baroque literature by literary historians and poets. In the first section, devoted to literary scholarship, two issues are discussed: studies in Renaissance and Baroque rhetoric and the ideological implications of studying Radical Reformation literature in the Stalinist period. The second section examines various elements of Renaissance and Baroque poetic tradition present in contemporary literature from the point of view of translation strategies, intertextuality and the nature of religious poetry.

Opis:
In the article an attempt is made to answer the question why some Polish literary works are included in the world canon and some others, endorsed by Polish critics as excellent, are not. The author discusses The Western Canon of Harold Bloom and the criteria for including some literary works in Bloom’s canon and excluding  thers from this canon. There are only a few works of Polish literature on Bloom’s list. This is a starting point for the discussion about the presence of Polish literature in the world canon. As far as non-English literary works are concerned, the shape of the canon is infl uenced by several factors. Translation into English is only a prerequisite for a more important role in the world canon. Anthologies also play a decisive role in this process. However, there are a few other equally important factors: an infl uential, well known translator; a mainstream publishing house; recommendations of renowned critics; and reviews in prestigious journals and magazines. For that reason there are works and authors that can be found in the world canon, e.g. the latest translation of Ferdydurke, included as the only Polish literary work on a list of 501 Must-Read Books published by Bounty Books in 2007. This translation was included because it was published by Yale University Press, recommended by Susan Sontag and favourably reviewed by „The Observer”. This is also the case with the poetry Adam Zagajewski – he is in the canon not only because he is an excellent poet but also because he is a professor of prestigious American universities; his poetry and essays are present in magazines, such as „New Yorker”; he has an influential translator; his works are published by well known publishers and reviewed by „The New York Review of Books”. Only in such circumstances is there a chance to include a work of a minor literature in the world canon.

Opis:
In this article Whitehead’s philosophy of mathematics is characterized as a Structural Second-Order Platonism and it is demonstrated that the Whiteheadian ontology is consistent with modern formal approaches to the foundation of mathematics. We follow the pathway taken by model-theoretically and semantically oriented philosophers. Consequently, it is supposed that all mathematical theories (understood as deductively closed set of sentences) determine their own models. These models exist mind-independently in the realm of eternal objects. From the metatheoretical point of view the hypothesis (posed by Józef Życiński) of the Rationality Field is explored. It is indicated that relationships between different models can be described in the language of modal logics and can further be axiomatized in the framework of the Second Order Set Theory. In conclusion, it is asserted that if any model (of a mathematical theory) is understood, in agreement with Whitehead’s philosophy, as a collection of eternal objects, which can be simultaneously realized in a single actual occasion, then our external world is governed by the hidden pattern encoded in the field of pure potentialities which constitute the above mentioned Field of Rationality. Therefore, this work can be regarded as the first step towards building a Logic of Rationality.

Purpose: The aim of the work was to create an appropriate substrate for organ transplantation using bioactive tissue-based scaffold populated by cells of the graft recipient. The purpose of the modeling was to investigate the mechanical effects of wave loading of aortic and pulmonary tissue material. Methods: The biological properties of tissues of aortic and pulmonary valves were modified by the process of decellularization. The host cells were removed by various physical methods with focus on minimal degradation of the extracellular matrix. Thus, the decellularization process was controlled by histological methods. The tissue decellularization process was simulated by finite element modelling. Results: The mechanical results represented by a displacement at the center of the sample were coherent and the heterogeneity of the distribution of the caves on the surface of the samples was confirmed, both by experiment and in the simulation by the alternate occurrence of local minima and maxima. The latter results from the uneven removal of cells from the effect of the wave causing decellularization were also predicted by the numerical model. Laser radiation had a destructive effect on the components of the extracellular matrix (e.g., collagen and elastic fibers), mainly depending on the fluence and number of pulses in a single exposure. Conclusions: The differences between the valve tissue materials were shown, and the impact of the process of decellularization on the properties of the tissues was analyzed. It should be emphasized that due to low absorption and high scattering, laser radiation can deeply penetrate the tissue, which allows for effective decellularization process in the entire volume of irradiated tissue.
