Opis:
Ellipsometric studies of NdMnO$\text{}_{3}$ single crystals of orthorhombic symmetry were carried out in the spectral range 0.5-5.0 eV. Experimental data, which were obtained on the (001)$\text{}_{pc}$-type planes of pseudo-cubic system, were analyzed in the model of biaxial crystal. For the first time, three componentsε$\text{}_{x}$,ε$\text{}_{y}$,ε$\text{}_{z}$ of the effective dielectric function for manganites of orthorhombic symmetry were determined. From ellipsometric data, the spectra of optical conductivity and loss function were also calculated and considered. The fine structure of the spectra and optical anisotropy was the basis for discussion of the microscopic origin of the optical transitions responsible for the optical features. The electronic excitations due to dipole-forbidden spin-allowed transitions of the d-d-type in Mn-ions, f-f-type in Nd-ions and charge-transfer 2p(O)-3d(Mn) transitions were taken into account. The data for NdMnO$\text{}_{3}$ were compared with those obtained for other related undoped and doped single crystals of perovskite-type structure, LaMnO$\text{}_{3}$, (LaBa)(MnCo)O$\text{}_{3}$ and (LaCa)CoO$\text{}_{3}$.

The effect of nonmagnetic $Mg^{2+}$ and magnetic $Co^{2+}$ doping in Kagome compounds was investigated using DC magnetic susceptibility. The main effect of doping is to change the crystal field parameters. It was shown that $Co^{2+}$ doping increases considerably crystal field parameters in $Ni_3V_2O_8$ while doping with nonmagnetic $Mg^{2+}$ ions decreases considerably crystal field parameters in $Co_3V_2O_8$ crystals.

This paper reviews recent progress in the studies of magnetic dilutions on magnetic properties of two frustrated systems: magnetoplumbite-like $SrGa_{12-x}Cr_xO_{19}$ and kagome staircase $Co_3V_2O_8$ doped with Mg ions. In the first group of compounds magnetic properties are determined by magnetic defects arising due to doping. In the case of kagome staircase compounds magnetic dilution suppresses effects of crystal field acting on magnetic ions. In particular, the dilution decreases magnetocrystalline anisotropy and anisotropy of magnetization.

The structural, optical, and magnetic properties are studied in the (M$\text{}_{2}$Cu$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{3}$)$\text{}_{m}$(CuO$\text{}_{2}$)$\text{}_{n}$-type single crystals with the surface on which the Bi-2212-type phase was indicated. The physical properties of such samples were interpreted to some extent by the contributions of two phases. When the secondary phases on the surface of the samples were removed by mechanical polishing or etching by Ar$\text{}^{+}$-ion plasma, the physical properties were typical of the (M$\text{}_{2}$Cu$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{3}$)$\text{}_{m}$(CuO$\text{}_{2}$)$\text{}_{n}$-type crystals. The optical method was shown to be effective for indication of secondary Bi-rich phases on the surface of (M$\text{}_{2}$Cu$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{3}$)$\text{}_{m}$(CuO$\text{}_{2}$)$\text{}_{n}$ samples.

La$\text{}_{1-x}$MnO$\text{}_{3}$ films grown by metal organic chemical vapor deposition technique on r-plane cut Al$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{3}$ substrates were investigated. The change of the optical response over the La$\text{}_{1-x}$MnO$\text{}_{3}$/Al$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{3}$ sample surface was investigated along with the temperature dependence of magnetization. The mostly pronounced difference in the spectra of dielectric function occurred in the region of the d-d transitions of Mn-ions. The changes in the optical spectra and magnetic properties were correlated to the structural features of thin film.

The giant magnetoresistance effect (of about 50% at magnetic field of 1 T) was observed near the Curie temperature. Several mechanisms responsible for temperature dependence of resistivity are discussed. The effect of annealing was studied. It shifted the Curie temperature to the lower value, probably, because of the loss of oxygen.

Transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction proved chain ladder incommensurate single crystal structure of investigated samples. The incommensurate ratio was determined from the X-ray and electron diffraction being equal to 0.704. Diffuse scattering intensities localised on the planes perpendicular to the c*-axis and passing through the spots originating from the periodicity of chain sublattice were detected. High-angle grain boundary or twinning formed by rotation of 33.3° around [100] direction was observed. High-resolution electron microscopy images revealed the stacking faults in ac planes.

A spin-wave resonance technique was used to collect information on elementary magnon excitations in high quality epitaxial La$\text{}_{0.7}$Mn$\text{}_{1.3}$O$\text{}_{2.84}$ films prepared by dc-magnetron sputtering. It was found that besides bulk spin-wave modes, the spin-wave resonance spectrum includes also the surface spin waves. The value of spin-wave stiffness constant D=156 meV·Å$\text{}^{2}$ was found. The values of the surface magnetic anisotropy on both surfaces and their angular dependence were determined. The experimentally found spin-wave resonance spectra were explained based on the surface-inhomogeneity model. The effect of surface anisotropy on the spin-wave excitation conditions in epitaxial La$\text{}_{0.7}$Mn$\text{}_{1.3}$O$\text{}_{2.84}$ films was investigated. Spin-wave resonance data give an indirect evidence of periodic charge-ordered stripes formation.

The influence of heavy ion irradiation on the magnetic properties of the spin-Peierls compound CuGeO$\text{}_{3}$ has been investigated by means of the electron paramagnetic resonance, the spontaneous magnetization, and the low field ac susceptibility. The measurements were performed on the CuGeO$\text{}_{3}$ single crystals before and after irradiation with 80 MeV oxygen ions in the wide temperature range of 2-300 K. It was found that the irradiation induced an increase in the EPR signal intensity, magnetization, and susceptibility of this material. It was also shown that the irradiation does not lead to a decrease in the spin-Peierls transition temperature and to the formation of an antiferromagnetic phase which is expected to appear in disordered spin-Peierls systems.

Iron-containing nanoparticles and clusters were formed in silica with porosity, which was predetermined by different procedures of sol-gel technology and the chemical composition of precursors. Bulk and layer-type samples of different porosity were synthesized and investigated. Opis:
We have investigated thin films of lanthanum manganites epitaxially grown by pulsed laser deposition on single-crystalline substrates. X-ray diffraction studies show that the characteristic feature of the investigated films is a superposition of fractions with long range atomic order in the basic single-crystalline matrix, and mesoscopic order in the clusterized structure encompassing the Mn-O layers. A detailed analysis of diffusive scattering shows that the size of metallic clusters and their volume concentration in the dielectric matrix varies. In the case of a small size and concentration, the metallic clusters in low temperature behave as quantum dots and their presence leads to a tunneling mechanism of conductivity with characteristic R(T)= const. In the case of large cluster size, the discrete energy levels become smeared. It appears also that the optical, transport, and magnetic properties of the investigated films depend critically on the distribution of Mn$\text{}^{2+}$, Mn$\text{}^{3+}$, and Mn$\text{}^{4+}$ ions in the clusters.

Opis:
We have investigated the structure, and electric, optical, and magnetic properties of LaSr(Ca)MnO films containing atomic clusters of various types coherently built into the basic crystallographic matrix. Below the transition to the metallic state, the electrical conductivity of the films is determined by tunneling of charge carriers between metallic clusters. We have found that for each sample there exists a threshold value of magnetic ordering, above which the magnetic subsystem starts to affect actively the film conductivity. The observed increase of conductivity with decreasing temperature is caused by the fact that in the process of magnetic ordering of the samples the cluster size and concentration of metallic phase increase. Experimental results are in agreement with theoretical calculations.
