Opis:
Durum wheat grains are in demand on the international market because they exhibit exceptional quality traits, which make them suitable for use in the pasta industry. Most Polish pasta producers import the necessary raw material from other countries (e.g. Italy). However, it is also possible to grow durum wheat under the conditions of Poland, as cultivars that can be successfully cultivated under these climatic conditions, as well as those that can overwinter successfully, have already been grown. When compared with the common wheat, durum wheat performs much better in terms of yellow pigments, gluten, glassiness and grain hardness. Under Poland’s conditions, it yields lower than common wheat, but the grain reaches a higher price. It should be stated that durum wheat is an important cereal, whose grain is used mainly for pasta and semolina production. The aim of this study is to characterise the method cultivation, cultivation possibilities, and usage of durum wheat grains.

Popularization of faba bean cultivation among growers can increase the supply of seeds of this crop on the Polish market. Thanks to the fact that more seeds will be available, especially low-tannin varieties, it may also increase the interest of the feed industry in this component, mainly of the poultry feed production sector. Studies have shown that the partial replacement of soybean meal with faba bean in mixture feeds does not adversely affect the production performance of birds. Refining treatments additionally increases nutritional value of seeds and the use of protein from them. Thanks to their starch content faba bean seeds bring a certain amount of energy into the mixtures. This is particularly important in view of the ban on the use of GMO feed materials in animal nutrition and, to some extent, in view of the improvement in the supply of Poland with domestic feed components.

In this review paper strip-till has been characterized from the point of view of the latest scientific research and practi- cal justification of the advisability of using and popularizing this cultivation method in Poland for various crop species. Analysis of scientific literature has shown that strip-till has a beneficial ef- fect on crops and soil properties. It reduces the number of tillage operations, and thus labour costs and fuel consumption. Further improvement of strip-till cultivation should be related to the im- provement of seeding units designed for this cultivation technol- ogy, as well as to the implementation of precision farming solu- tions related to the application of fertilizers and their effective use by plants. In connection with the implementation of cultivation technologies improving soil quality and reducing the negative im- pact of agriculture on the environment, strip-till technology has a chance to be much more widely used in Poland and may replace traditional plough tillage.

Opis:
This review presents a recent review of knowledge on the possibilities of sorghum cultivation in Poland including the strategies for its utilisation. Sorghum is the fifth cereal in the world in terms of production scale. This position stems from high tolerance of this plant to water shortages and, at the same time, relatively good yields. Therefore, the main sorghum growing re- gions are concentrated in Africa and Asia. In Europe, due to the sufficient supply of consumer and fodder grains of the main cere- als (wheat, triticale, rye, oats, and barley), there has been a lack of interest from growers in sorghum cultivation. The plant also has high temperature requirements during the emergence period and requires a long growing season, hence food products from sorghum came from imported grains. Although in Poland the plant still has a small cultivated area, there are visible attempts by growers to cultivate sorghum. The grains can be used more widely in human nutrition, especially for people with gluten in- tolerance. It is used in livestock feed production. It can be used in the production of bioethanol. In addition to grain production, sorghum can also be grown for green matter, which has applica- tions in ruminant nutrition (cattle, sheep and goats) and biogas production. The aim of this study is to analyse the potential of sorghum cultivation in Poland and the possible directions of cul- tivation (for grain and green matter) and use (for human food, animal feed and energy purposes). The analysis of the world and Polish literature in the field of sorghum cultivation shows that this species can be cultivated and widely used in Poland. However, it is necessary to popularize the nutritional value and food use of grain in order to build a market. The forage use of both grain and green sorghum mass should also be popularized. The possibility of cultivating sorghum for energy purposes is also a future trend.

Opis:
Several cereal species are grown in Europe, but wheat and maize have the largest acreage, followed by barley, oats and rye. Due to breeding improvements, cereal cultivars produce high grain yields. Improvement of cereals within a species and breeding of new cultivars is one of the main methods to improve yield and grain quality. However, the creation of interspecific hy- brids, in which new types with better characteristics are obtained through introgression and genetic selection, is also worthy of at- tention. The interspecific hybrids of cereals are not very popu- lar, but triticale is the cereal that has gained the most popularity and is of increasing interest to farmers in Europe. It is the result of the hybridisation of wheat and rye. Having many beneficial properties, its cultivation should be popularised. The aim of this paper was to review scientific research concerning possibilities of increasing the acreage under cultivation of this cereal, taking into consideration its agronomic requirements and grain quality, as well as the potential of grain utilisation for food and fodder purposes.

Poland's accession to the European Union resulted ina change of the livestock production structure. A constant andsystematic increase in the poultry production is observed and inthis respect Poland is a leader in the production of poultry meatand eggs. A significant increase in the poultry population resultedin the need to supply the animal feed industry with appropriateraw materials for the production of feed for various species anddifferent market destinations. Stable poultry production is associatedwith economic efficiency and the production of grain, thebasic component of compound feed. Improvement in cereal yieldand oversupply of grain on the domestic market stimulate the productionand increase the poultry population in Poland. Grain hasvarious effectiveness and usefulness as well as restrictions resultingfrom poultry breed characteristics. This has caused changesin the demand from animal feed industries for grain of particularcereal species. The current study aims to discuss the issues of growing andusing particular cereal species as a raw material base for the productionof poultry feed. The work focuses on the main speciesof feed grains: wheat, triticale, barley, oats, rye and maize. Thestudy also presents the problem of cultivation and utilising thosegrains for animal feed, with particular emphasis on the scale ofproduction and their usefulness in poultry feed production.

Opis:
Amaranthus L. belongs to herbaceous plants with C4- type photosynthesis. The genus Amaranthus contains about 70 species, with three subspecies, including both cultivated and wild types. Amaranth, a pseudo-cereal, has been known to mankind for quite some time and is one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world. It originates from South America, where its cultiva- tion began and where its seeds and green parts were used as food for humans and animals. Nowadays, it is grown in many coun- tries of the Americas, Southeast Asia and Africa. In Europe it is a plant whose cultivation and utilization potential remains under- appreciated. The seeds are gluten-free and contain the valuable health-promoting compound squalene along with tocopherols and carotenoids. As the amaranth seeds have exceptional nutritional qualities, the crop should be cultivated in Europe. Both the seeds and the green parts of amaranth can also be successfully used in animal nutrition. They contribute valuable protein, fat and macro- and microelements to the feed. As evidenced by previous scien- tific research, amaranth can be grown in Poland. It is currently grown on a small scale, but the varied potential uses of the grain offer a good prospect for a significant increase of the area under that crop in Poland. Only two cultivars are currently available for cultivation in Poland so there is much demand fort further breeding work aimed at developing new cultivars adapted to the coutry’s climate. The aim of the study is to discuss the nutritional value and possibilities of cultivation development and use of am- aranth seeds in Poland.

After triticale, Tritordeum is the second cereal obtained by means of hybridization. As a new type of cereal, it can be introduced in the long term into cultivation in Polish conditions after conducting scientific research. However, it is necessary to identify its requirements regarding climate, soil conditions as well as agricultural engineering. Since this cereal has a high nutritional value, it may be successfully used in the production of food products with increased nutritional value. At the same time, the grains have a good fodder value, therefore they can also be used for the production of feed for livestock. In this work, a description of Tritordeum and an assessment of the cultivation potential of this crop in Poland are undertaken, with considerations for its nutritional and fodder value, based on the scientific literature.

Poland is one of the leaders among poultry producers in Europe. There is a constant and dynamic development trend in this field of animal production. Restructuring which has occurred in Polish agriculture after the period of systemic transformation, including in poultry farming through the transition from small--farm farms with diversified animal species structure and feed production based on own production feed resources to speciali-zed poultry farms with a production profile of eggs or poultry. This resulted in a significant increase in the demand for indu-strial feed as well as raw materials necessary for their production. The introduction of high-production hybrids of laying hens and broiler chickens requires proper living and feeding conditions. The poultry industry in Poland is characterized by high dynamics of development and in this respect it was ranked among the top European Union countries. Large poultry stock requires constant supply of raw materials for the production of feed, including pro-tein components, which constitute the highest cost of feed mix. The aim of the study is to discuss the problem of cultivation and use of native coarse-grained leguminous plants as a substi-tute for post-extraction soybean meal. The work focuses on four species: faba bean, pea, lupine and soybean. The problems of cul-tivation and use of seeds of these plants for fodder purposes are presented, with particular emphasis on the suitability of their use in poultry feeds.

Opis:
Sorghum is a cereal crop of major importance in global production. It is grown in hot and dry regions of the world. In Poland, this species has so far not been cultivated for grain due to unfavourable climatic conditions. Currently, climate warming and the extension of the growing season provide an opportunity to introduce sorghum into grain cultivation. Three grain sorghum cultivars Albanus, Anggy, GK Emese were used in the ongoing microplot trials and three different nitrogen rates were applied: 80, 100 and 120 kg ha-1. The research was conducted over two growing seasons. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of cultivar and level of nitrogen fertilisation on the yield, yield structure and grain protein content of sorghum. A differentiated response of cultivars to nitrogen fertilisation was shown. Albanus and Anggy cultivars have similar yield potential and reaction to nitrogen fertilisation, and the optimum nitrogen dose for the cultivars is 100 kg of nitrogen per hectare, and an increased dose does not significantly increase the yield. Regardless of the level of nitrogen fertilization, the GK Emese variety always showed a higher protein yield compared to the other tested sorghum varieties. The cultivar GK Emese showed the highest yield potential. In 2020 it exhibited the highest increase in grain and protein yield along to increase of nitrogen fertilisation.
