    Niniejsza praca zwraca uwagę na bardzo ważną, ale zarazem prawie zupełnie zapomnianą rolę, jaką odegrali polscy inżynierowie różnych specjalności, zarówno w swojej ojczyźnie, jak i poza jej granicami, rolę pozostającą w cieniu najważniejszego zadania Polaków w epoce zaborów: odzyskania niepodległości za wszelką cenę. Szczególnie warto wspomnieć działalność Polaków za granicą w dziedzinie inżynierii. Może się to wydawać dziwne w przypadku narodu bez silnych tradycji w dziedzinie techniki. Do pewnego stopnia wytłumaczyć to można motywowanym patriotycznie pragnieniem przygotowania się do przyszłej walki zbrojnej o wolność i niepodległość, w której – jak oczekiwano – dziedzina inżynierii odgrywałaby coraz ważniejszą rolę.
    The paper highlights a very important but almost completely forgotten role played by Polish engineers of different specialties in their homeland and abroad, remaining in the shadow of most conscious Poles’ agenda during the era of partitions: that of restoring their country’s independence at any price. Particularly noteworthy is the engineering activity of Poles abroad. This may seem surprising in the case of a nation without strong technological traditions. To some extent, it stemmed from a patriotically-motivated desire to get prepared for the future armed struggle for freedom and independence, in which – it was expected – the engineering profession would play an increasingly important part.

    Przedstawiony artykuł traktuje o właściwościach fizykochemicznych odpadów wtórnych jakimi są popioły i żużle powstałe po termicznym przekształcaniu odpadów komunalnych. Omówiono problemy, obecne tendencje i oczekiwania stawiane w przyszłości gospodarce odpadami komunalnymi. Opisano także aspekty prawne i podstawy działania spalarni odpadów. Scharakteryzowano popiół pochodzący z oczyszczania gazów oraz żużel denny. Wyniki badań zestawiono tabelarycznie i porównano ich wielkości do obecnie obowiązujących norm oraz rozporządzeń. Przedstawiono wykorzystywane na świecie sposoby zagospodarowania odpadów wtórnych, a także zaproponowano konkretne rozwiązania, zgodne z ideą gospodarki o obiegu zamkniętym.
    The presented article treats about the physical and chemical properties of secondary waste such as ashes and slags created after the thermal treatment of municipal waste. Problems, current trends and future expectations regarding municipal waste management are discussed. The legal aspects and the basics of the waste incineration plant are also described. Ash from gas treatment and bottom slag are characterized. The results of the research are tabulated and compared to the current standards and regulations. It presents the methods of utilizing secondary waste used in the world, as well as proposes specific solutions in line with the idea of circular economy.

    The contribution of 4f electrons to the electronic structure of the semiconductor clean surface caused by the surface doping of it by rare-earth metal atoms (Eu, Sm) will be presented. The surface doping was performed by the controlled, sequential deposition of the rare-earth metal atoms on the clean surface in UHV conditions (Sm on GaN or CdTe) or by the doping of the layer volume of (EuGd)Te. After each deposition or surface treatment the synchrotron radiation was used to measure in situ the resonant photoemission spectra (the Fano type resonance) to study the contribution of 4f electrons of divalent and trivalent Sm and Eu ions to the valence band electronic structure of created sample. The first stages of the metal atoms deposition lead to the surface doping. Further metal atoms deposition leads to the growth of the metallic islands on the surface and causes the appearance of the sharp metallic Fermi edge in the energy distribution curves. Proper coverage and annealing of the sample surface with metal atoms leads to the diffusion of the metal atoms into the sample and results in an increase in the crystal doping and decrease in the metallic islands contribution to the measured spectra. As a result, the new electronic structure of the valence band can be created and investigated in situ.

    Resonant photoemission spectra of Sn$\text{}_{1-x}$Gd$\text{}_{x}$Te (x=0.02 and 0.08) measured for the photon energy range 142 to 151 eV show the valence band density of states distribution and the Gd 4f derived maximum. The energy position of the J=0 component of the Gd 4f maximum was determined and used as a measure of the Gd 4f shell binding energy. The electrostatic model of core level shifts was used to interpret the difference in the Gd 4f binding energies observed for x=0.02 and x=0.08.

    The phenomenon of Fano type resonant photoemission was used to distinguish the Fe electrons derived partial contribution to the valence band of a semimagnetic semiconductor Cd$\text{}_{1-x}$Fe$\text{}_{x}$Se. The states appearing at the middle of the valence band correspond to the Fe 3d electrons while the step of the density of states obtained at the valence band edge region correspondsvto the hybridized s-p-d electrons.

    The CdTe(100) c(2×2) surface prepared by ion bombardment and annealing was investigated by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation with photon energies between 8.5 eV and 32 eV. The bulk band structure was determined along the ΓΔX-direction normal to the surface measuring energy-distribution curves. The results are compared with a theoretical valence band structure assuming free-electron-like final states in connection with k-conservation. For further comparison we calculated the final states by the pseudopotential method and analyzed the results in form of structure plots. In this way, most of the dispersing maxima in the normal emission spectra can be explained. For this mode of photoelectron spectroscopy the resulting dispersion must be due to the component of the Bloch wave vector normal to the surface, k$\text{}_{⊥}$, keeping surface related structures at a fixed binding energy position E$\text{}_{b}$. The lack of dispersion for five structures along ΓΔX gives experimental evidence for their surface origin.
