Opis:
Gross margin is the difference between the annual value of production from 1 ha of crops and the variable costs incurred in their production. One of the points of this study was t o record individual variable costs for hardy nursery stock, especially consumption and labour costs. It should be mentioned that the gross margin includes just the main variable costs. It is often very difficult to split the other smaller variable costs, e specially between the crop categories. The gross margin evaluated for hedge cultivars of Eastern arborvitae plants grown in containers varied with the area of the nursery, from 95,75 PLN/ha in small nurseries to 125,687 PLN/ha in big ones. For plants grown in the field, the margin was much lower, from 47,217 PLN/ha to 65,527 PLN, respectively.

Opis:
The use of salt to malt ice has definite effects on the environment. Some of these environmental effects are: soil erosion, environmental pollution, changes in mineral nutrition or general destruction of the physiological processes of plants. This use of salt has a negative impact on roadside vegetation and sustainability. The objective of the presented study was to investigate the effects of fulvic and humic organic acids as well as the calcium on growth and chlorophyll content of seven tree species grown under salt stress. Two year old seedlings of – Acer campestre, Aer platanoides, Acer pseudoplatanus, Acer tataricum ssp. ginnala, Ginkgo biloba, Platanus ×hispanica 'Acerifolia' and Tilia cordata were planted to plastic pots (2 dm3 vol). They were planted outdoors in a growing medium compound which had high sphagnum peat, grainy sand and composted pine bark. Salinity stress was maintained by irrigating plants with tap water containing 3.3 g NaCl/L H2O. Different organic fertilizers were used to redce the risk of nutritional stress caused by salinity. Salinity in the growing medium limited the growth of two maple species and littleleaf linden. In other species such A. campestre, A. tataricum ssp. ginnala, G. biloba there were no significant differences when compared to the control group of plants. Severe leaf damage was observed on A. paltanoides where leaf burning was seen on up to 30%of the leaf blade surface. The response to salinity of other species like A. pseudoplatanus, A. tataricum ssp. ginnala, and T. cordata was less evident. Humic organic acids applied alone to the growing medium improved the growth of all the maple species when compared to the control group. A calcium had the best effect on the growth of all tested trees except A. tataricum ssp. ginnala and G. biloba. The chlorophyll content index (CCI) differed according to the growing medium treatment and the species. The total CCI ranged from 9.62 for the control plants P. ×hispanica 'Acerifolia' to 52.64 for G. biloba which had been treated with a calcium. Application of organic fertilizers to the salt treated growing medium increased the CCI in many species.

Opis:
Crabapples are well known ornam ental trees. The magnificent flowering and abundant, colorful fruiting are the main features that have made these trees so popular with the public. From over 900 species, hybrids and cultivars known throughout the world it is very difficult to make the rig ht choice and find the proper tree for a given public area, private garden, or street planting. Although hundreds of crabapples have been named, not many of them have been described and marketed. The majority still remain unknown and unavailable in Poland. In this article, based on the available literature and author’s own observations, an evaluation of the decorative value of 176 cultivars of crabapple is presented. Three of them scored in this research excellent marks of 15 points, which means that these trees are suitable for any landscaping needs. Three cultivars were evaluated at the lowest level of 7 points or less, and their propagation and cultivation should be discontinued mostly because of their high susceptibility to scab. Although flowering craba pples need very little care, they have one serious problem – leaf diseases, with the main and often noted apple scab. This is the main reason why so many of the crabapples in the presented evaluation which scored 7 - 9 points should be planted only in botani cal and dendrological collections to maintain gene diversity and/or for further hybridization programs.

Plants of ‘Catawbiense Boursault’ and ‘Eskimo’ rhododendrons or ‘Cannon’s Double’ and ‘Kilian’ azalea grown in 4 l containers were treated twice with chlormequat (2000, 4000 and 8000 mg · dm-3), trinexapac-ethyl (50, 100, 200, 400 mg · dm-3), daminozide (2500, 5000, 7500 mg · dm-3), proxeadione calcium (75, 150, 300 mg · dm-1) and once with paclobutrazol (50, 100, 200, 400 mg · dm-3). Shoot length of the subsequent growth flush following the treatments decreased with increasing rates of the growth retardants. The number of flower buds per plant increased with increasing rates of pacloburazol, chlormequat and daminozide. Prohexadione calcium was less effective in flower bud initiation and the worst results were obtained with trinexapac-ethyl.

Opis:
Woody plants grown near the roads are force-fed by salt and this has negative effect on their growth and decorative value. The aim of the presented study was to investigate the effects of salinity on growth and nutrient composition of four trees species often planted along the roads and streets in Poland. Two years old seedlings (bare root) of four tree species: Acer negundo, A. platanoides, Quercus robur and Tilia cordata were potted and grown outside under four soil salinity levels maintained by drenching plants with tap water containing 0.25, 0.5, 1.5, and 3.3g NaCl/L H2O. Plant height, soil samples for electrical conductivity (EC) and pH determination as well as leaf samples for macroelements (N, P, K, Ca, Mg) content evaluation were collected after each growing season of two years of experiment. Electrical conductivity of the growing medium varied insignificantly between species, but salt concentration in the growing medium was distinctly higher in the upper than in the bottom part. Soil salinity had strong but variable effect on plant growth during the experiment. Only Acer negundo growth was not affected even by the highest concentration of NaCl solution. With increasing salinity of growing medium more Na+ was taken by all species but the biggest amount of sodium ions was accumulated in the leaves of Tilia cordata, while the lowest in Acer negundo. Than potassium ions content decreased with increasing medium salinity only in the leaves of Quercus robur and Tilia cordata. In the leaves of Acer platanoides and Tilia cordata calcium concentration was decreased at increased salinity, in two other tested species amount of Ca2+ in the leaves was elevated. The main conclusion that can be drown is that Acer negundo is highly tolerant to salinity stress while Acer platanoides was the most sensitive among tested species.
