    Public space more and more often makes use of multimodal texts, combining in them both linguistic and graphic-picture elements. The present article constitutes an attempt at a linguistic analysis of multimodal texts described on the example of city logos. The economization of perception as well as the willingness to present a given city in a way that is attractive for the recipient cause that this kind of text that a logo is, evolves continually. Simultaneously, logo still remains a whole which is coherent in functional and semantic terms and that, in turn, entitles it to be treated in terms of a semiotically arranged visual plane.

    "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer" by Patrick Süsking constitutes a perfect example of a literary text which, in its verbal layer, makes use of a variety of a linguistic means aiming to reflect, as accurately as possible, the core notion of the world created in this text, namely scent. A linguistic description of olfactory sensations is an extremely difficult task, as they are highly individualized and they always remain in a close relation with the recipient, drawing from his/her experiences and memories. The language that the author of "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer" employs enchatnts with the abundance of similes and metaphors, which turns dealing with this literary text into a special kind of experience. The article constitutes a linguistic analysis of "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer", whose focal point is the literary title itself and the way it is realized in this novel. The manner of creating the paricular fragrances is analyzed through the description of linguistic structures and stylistic forms that contribute to the coherent picture of olfactory impressions.

    The present article constitutes an attempt to answer the question what functions are performed by a literary title in reference to the text preceding it and in the relation: text’s author and its recipient. At the beginning presented are general functions of a text, later on followed by an analysis of the functions of a literary title on the basis of a corpus made up of book titles within the range of women’s literature. Literary title and its functions are analyzed against the background of text linguistics and psycholinguistics.

    Der vorliegende Beitrag setzt sich zum Ziel, multimodale und mit journalistischen Beiträgen verlinkte Verweiselemente von Internetseiten (sog. Teaser) aus medienlinguistischer Sicht zu beschreiben, um zu prüfen, welchen Mehrwert sie für ihre Rezipient(inn)en bieten können. Als Datenbasis gelten Einstiegsseiten polnischer Portale www.wpolityce.pl und www.natemat.pl, die sich mit allen topaktuellen Ereignissen beschäftigen und gern an die sozial relevanten Fragen anknüpfen. Ihre Einstiegsseiten geben Aufschluss über die Konzeption des Formats und animieren zur weiteren Lektüre. Untersucht wurden insgesamt 120 multimodale Verweiselemente, die auf den Einstiegsseiten dieser Portale im Zeitraum von März bis August 2014 erschienen sind. Im Vordergrund der Analyse steht die Bewertung der gebrauchten Gestaltungsmittel und nicht der visualisierte Inhalt.

    The article constitutes an attempt to answer the question whether demotivators being popular in multimedia communication can be treated as an example of verbal – iconic texts which have a right to an visual planes status. In the present article an answer is sought to the question in what semantic relation the elements of the verbal and iconic layer of a given demotivator remain with regard to each other as well as what function can be ascribed to them. In reference to the theory of microtexts according to Hardarik Blühdorn presented is also the author’s own concept of microtext which integrates verbal and iconic elements. A formal, semantic and functional analysis of demotivators serves to demonstrate that they are entitled to the status of visual planes.

    The article presents a linguistic analysis of verbal-iconic structures of ‘demotivators’. It is the ‘demotivators’ that constitute an excellent example of how strong and multi-dimensional the relation between a text and a picture can be. The constitutive feature of ‘demotivators’ is the co-existence of two sovereign, and yet to some extent also symbiotic, planes i.e. the plane of text and the plane of picture. The type of mutual relation between the above mentioned planes determines the functions of ‘demotivators’. The article presents various types of ‘demotivators’ and provides a classification of the functions of those visual planes.
    W artykule zaprezentowano lingwistyczną analizę struktur werbalno-ikonicznych, dokonaną na przykładzie demotywatorów. Właśnie demotywatory stanowią doskonały przykład tego, jak silna i wielopłaszczyznowa potrafi być relacja między tekstem i obrazem. Cechą konstytutywną demotywatorów jest współistnienie dwóch suwerennych, a jednak w pewnym sensie także symbiotycznych płaszczyzn, jakimi są płaszczyzna tekstu i płaszczyzna obrazu. Typ relacji, w jakiej pozostają wobec siebie owe płaszczyzny, determinuje z kolei funkcje demotywatorów. W artykule przedstawiono różne typy demotywatorów oraz sklasyfikowano funkcje tychże płaszczyzn wizualnych.
    Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird die linguistische Analyse von Text-Bild-Gefügen präsentiert, deren Bezugspunkt Demotivatoren bilden. Gerade die Demotivatoren gelten als Beispiel dessen, wie eng und vielfältig die Beziehung zwischen Text und Bild sein kann. Zum konstitutiven Merkmal der Demotivatoren wird die Koexistenz zweier souveräner, aber auch im gewissen Sinne symbiotischer Flächen, d. h. einer Text-Fläche und einer Bild-Fläche. Der Typ der Beziehung, zu der es zwischen den beiden Teilflächen kommt, nimmt Einfluss auf die Funktion des Demotivators. Im Beitrag werden unterschiedliche Typen der Demotivatoren präsentiert und Funktionen dieser Sehflächen werden klassifiziert.

    Contemporary urban spaces are full of visual planes on which all kinds of signs are combined in a comprehensive manner, collectively creating new meanings. If these messages are connected with a given place or situation, they perform specific functions resulting from this fact, for example they structure urban space, they facilitate orientation, they warn, forbid, advertise, and embellish. The aim of the present article is the analysis of selected urban texts occurring in German and Polish cities paying special attention to their structural layer as well as its compliance with principles of semiotic economy.
    Współczesne przestrzenie miejskie pełne są płaszczyzn wizualnych, na których różnego rodzaju znaki łączą się w sposób kompleksowy, wspólnie tworząc nowe znaczenia. Jeśli komunikaty te związane są z danym miejscem lub sytuacją, pełnią określone, wynikające z tego faktu funkcje, np. strukturyzują przestrzeń miejską, ułatwiają orientację, ostrzegają, zabraniają lub reklamują czy też ozdabiają. Celem artykułu jest analiza wybranych tekstów urbanistycznych występujących w polskich i niemieckich miastach ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem ich warstwy strukturalnej oraz jej zgodności z zasadami ekonomii semiotycznej.

    Zum Thema des Beitrages werden Sprache-Bild-Texte, die auf bebilderten Kinderbucheinbänden auftauchen, bei denen der literarische Titel in seine visuelle Umgebung so eingebettet wird, dass er zu ihrem integralen Teil wird. Die Beziehungen, in denen der literarische Titel und seine visuelle Umgebung zueinander stehen, scheinen der Grund dafür zu sein, bebilderte Kinderbucheinbände als komplexe Sehflächen zu betrachten. Mit zahlreichen Abbildungen wird im Beitrag exemplifiziert, wie sich der literarische Titel und seine graphische Umgebung gegenseitig ergänzen, indem sie in Partnerschaft und Symbiose zueinander stehen. Der Beitrag gibt auch eine Antwort auf die Frage, wie Kinderbucheinbände als Sehflächen gestaltet werden sollten, um die Aufmerksamkeit der Kinder zu lenken, ihr Interesse am Buch zu erwecken und ihre sprachlichen Kompetenzen zu fördern.
    Tematem artykułu są teksty werbalnoikoniczne, analizowane na przykładzie ilustrowanych okładek bajek dla dzieci, gdzie tytuł literacki wpisany jest w swoje wizualne otoczenie, stanowiąc jego integralną część. Relacje, w jakich pozostają wobec siebie tytuł bajki i jego wizualne otoczenie, są podstawą do tego, by okładki bajek dla dzieci traktować jako kompleksowe powierzchnie wizualne. W artykule prezentowane są liczne przykłady tego, jak tytuł bajki i środowisko graficzne wzajemnie się uzupełniają, pozostając w relacji partnerstwa i symbiozy. Artykuł stanowi także próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie, w jaki sposób kształtować takie powierzchnie wizualne na okładkach bajek, by dzięki nim skupić uwagę dziecka i zainteresować je lekturą bajki oraz równocześnie wspierać jego kompetencję językową.
    The subject of the paper concerns verbaliconic texts, analyzed on the example of the illustrated covers of fairy tales for children where the literary title is inscribed in its visual surroundings, simultaneously constituting its integral part. The relations in which the title of the fairy tale and its visual surroundings remain with the reference to one another, are a basis for treating covers of fairy tales for children as complex visual surfaces. The paper presents numerous examples of how the title of a given fairy tale and the graphic environment mutually complement each other, remaining in the relation of partnership and symbiosis. The article also constitutes an attempt at answering the question in what way to shape such visual surfaces on covers of fairy tales so as to, owing to them, focus a child’s attention and make them interested in reading a particular fairy tale as well as simultaneously support their linguistic competence.
