    The author assumes that the curiosity is a type of human expression. It can manifest in various languages and people’s behaviors, e.g.: verbal, mimic, gestural, costume and also by props, hairstyles, makeup etc. Regardless of differences between particular manifestations of the curiosity it is always semiotic. Freaks, eccentrics and weirdos disturb human community’s order and call into question established norms. They do that by their specific behaviors, appearances and individualism. They rectify, transform and change the social reality. The artistic curiosity not infrequently turn out to be the metaphor of an individual lifestyle (e.g. Witkacy, Dali). Freaks in the world of culture are not either savages or barbarians. They express themselves as well as they express their distance from the cultural system. In connection to this thesis, the author assumes that the curiosity is culture-producing.

    Artykuł Marka Hendrykowskiego analizujący zbiór materiałów dokumentalnych z lat 1952-1955 jest pierwszym tego rodzaju studium poświęconym filmowym obrazom budowy warszawskiego Pałacu Kultury i Nauki w kontekście ideologii stalinizmu. Autor konkluduje: Z prowokacyjnego daru Pałac Kultury i Nauki stał się reliktem czasów stalinowskich – coraz bardziej odległym przypomnieniem kilkudziesięciu lat zniewolenia Polski przez sowiecki i rodzimy komunizm. Dzisiaj obrazy filmowe nakręcone w trakcie wznoszenia tej budowli stanowią niezastąpione świadectwo pychy przedwcześnie zapowiadającego swój triumf, narzuconego siłą ustroju. Monstrualny w swym ogromie Pałac stał się jeszcze jednym zabytkiem dziejów Warszawy, wpisanym w pejzaż miasta i służącym jego mieszkańcom. Uwodzicielskie zło, z jakim na zawsze będzie kojarzony, przestało wywierać swój złowieszczy wpływ.
    In his article Marek Hendrykowski analyses archive materials from the period of 1952-1955 dealing with the images of building of the Warsaw Palace of Culture and Science in the context of Stalinism. The author concludes that from a controversial gift, the Palace of Culture became a relict of bygone Stalinist era, a reminder of increasingly distant decades of enslavement by the Soviet and Polish communists. Today, films filmed during erection of the building are an indispensable witness to the conceit of the system imposed by force that led to the premature announcement of its triumph. The Palace, monstrous in its vastness, is yet another monument of the history of Warsaw, a part of its landscape and is useful to its inhabitants. The seductive evil with which it will forever be associated ceased to exert its sinister influence.

    The article proposes the hypothesis that on the basis of analytical and interpretative practices, when describing, analysing and interpretating moving images, a dichotomous, binary division into objective and subjective images is a highly questionable move: it does not lend itself to an absolutely unequivocal resolution. In film, as in the field of moving images as a whole, there is no objective narration, just as there is no subjective narration. What emerges is an ostensibly dependent narration (or ostensibly independent), blending and merging both of these aspirations in diverse ways.

    Film parodies are now attracting more popular interest than at almost any time in their history except the first two decades of the 20th century (golden era of film parody). The contemporary renewal of parody is an attractive phenomenon of popular culture. To analyse and recontextualize this renewal of parodistic paradigm in film supporting by new media (spontaneous net art) Hendrykowski has compiled a wide-ranging panorama and collection of classic examples made by many famous but also unknown film-makers. Underlying the entire collection is the author’s personal belief that parody can be divers and rich as particular form of cultural rebellion and social catharsis – by turns comic effect and confusing dialogue in polemical confrontation with common opinion and public point of view established by parodied original.

    Dyskusja oraz interpretowanie adaptacji filmowej w społeczno-kulturowym odniesieniu, które jest typowym dla semiotycznej, strukturalistycznej oraz estetycznej analizy tekstu, bywa problematyczne. Nawet kino jako sztuka poddaje się zwyczajowi dyskutowania o filmowym dorobku przypisywanym lub identyfikowanym z „autorem” i kinem autorskim. Mylącym może być przecenianie i nadmierna uwaga poświęcana „wierności” adaptacji filmowej, a trafniejsze może okazać się spojrzenie zarówno na adaptowany utwór literacki, jak i jego wersję ekranową jako na połączone teksty kultury konfrontujące się wzajemnie i biorące udział w określonym dyskursie. Artykuł Marka Hendrykowskiego podnosi te kwestie, a następnie bada je w oparciu o teoretyczną podstawę, w ramach której postrzega się adaptację jako formę komunikacji oraz koncentruje się ona językowych aspektach analizy intertekstualnej adaptacji filmowej jako formy translacji kulturowej.
    There are problems with discussing and interpreting film adaptation in the socio-cultural framework that is used for the semiotic, structural and aesthetic analysis of text. Even cinema as art often gives in to habit of talking about film “oeuvres” attributed to or identified in terms of an “author” and author’s cinema. It may be misleading to give too much weight and attention to the concept of “fidelity” of film adaptation, and it may be better to look at both – adapted piece of literature and its screen adaptation - as variously connected texts of culture confronting each other and participating in specific discourse. Marek Hendrykowski’s paper raises these questions, examines theoretical background of adaptation as form of communication, and reflects on the modelling linguistic aspects of intertextual analyses of film adaptation as a form of cultural translation.

    Marek Hendrykowski’s paper is devoted to the unique volume and its outstanding author. The book entitled “Beyond the Screen. Polish Cinematography 1896-2005” written by Edward Zajiček, Professor of Film School in Łódź, is the standard work in the field, unquestionably the most comprehensive and complete book on the history of Polish film production as a specific form of state and individual activity. This newly revised and expanded up-to-date monograph covering every important information about Polish film industry is the ideal introduction to everything the interested reader needs to know about it: from the fundamentals of film production to close-reading analyses of hundreds of classic examples.
