- Semantic interference of languages and translator’s “false friends” This contribution deals with lexical and semantic interferences leading to transfers and borrowings from the source into the target language. We analyse the linguistic and extra-linguistic factors of language contact and language interference, especially in the context of bilingualism / multilingualism, produced by globalization. Positive and negative interferences are established in relations between French, English and Ukrainian. A particular attention is drawn to the problem of “false friends” in translation, and some recommendations are given to identify them. Stress is laid on using semantic, stylistic, pragmatic, distributional and formal criteria to distinguish international words.
