Opis:
The article discusses the idea of universities for children, particularly its foundation by Maria Skłodowska-Curie and the current condition of this initiative. Maria Skłodowska-Curie was not only an excellent scientist, but also a great teacher and an educational innovator. She was the first to show that university may be a great place for children to learn. She emphasised that universities should be responsible not only for teaching but also for students’ flourishing. Modern universities seem to draw on this inspiring idea developed by Skłodowska-Curie. The author describes how the Maria Skłodowska-Curie cooperative changed as well as how the idea evolved into the university for children as it is recognised today.

Opis:
The governance of universities and colleges in the United States basically follows the concept and spirit of democracy embraced by the nation from its birth.  The systems and practices in place at most U.S. institutions of higher learning include collaborative, representative, or collective decision-making arrangements known as shared governance.  However, these systems and practices are hardly uniform due to the diversity of governance patterns that reflect the unique and different history, needs, and mission of a particular institution.  Sometimes they are differentiated from, and contrasted with, corporate, business, and more authoritarian or centralized forms of institutional governance. In contrast with university governance elsewhere in the world-that can range from strong central government control to private self-regulated operations-the U.S. forms of campus governance have emerged in a country that does not have centralized authority over education.  U.S. institutions of higher learning respond to a variety of controls and interests that are on display variously at public, private non-profit, private for-profit, and religious universities.  Governance, authority, and administration are spread across a wide spectrum of players, including governing boards; presidents, chancellors, and other administrators; the academy/faculty; administrative staff; campus committees; students; and, even some external factors. Shared governance is not a perfect formula or panacea for university administration and decision-making.  It does, however, provide a methodology, system, and concept that can help guide the leadership of a university as it approaches the administration and conduct of its educational responsibilities.  In today’s higher education environment, the term governance is rather expansive.  In one sense, it means top-down governance that is the rightful role and authority of an institutional board charged with overseeing policy, programming, performance, and executive guidance and evaluation.  But, it also variously means the use of institutional strategies, operations, and components to distribute, disseminate, and “share” authority and responsibilities for a university’s administrative, management, and decision-making functions, i.e., “on-campus governance.”  In this respect, shared governance “borrows” many of the attributes and principles of democratic government. In any case, shared governance, in its many forms and applications, is widely practiced in U.S. universities, including Delta State University.

Entrepreneurship constitutes one of the key competences and a significant element of todays’ university graduates’ professional training. Academia, in its didactic and educational process, offers numerous opportunities for shaping students’ entrepreneurial behaviours. A fundamental role in this respect is played by the scope of knowledge and skills offered, as well as by shaping proper attitudes in the course of professional internships, participation in student organisations and science club projects. The present study attempts to evaluate the university’s role in the process of shaping entrepreneurial attitudes of students representing the selected universities in Lublin. Respondents’ opinions, collected by means of a diagnostic poll method and a survey, were analysed. The paper verified the thesis regarding insufficient outcomes of education in developing entrepreneurial competences of students from selected universities.

Opis:
The paper is devoted to the analysis of the creation of university's potential for knowledge transfer to the business environment. The analysis will be presented in the system inspired by the model proposed by Tidd, Bessant and Pavitt [2005] which is as follows: (i) generating knowledge (ii) searching for and identifying knowledge, (iii) evaluating and selecting ides, (iv) implementing in practice. Each stage creates different challenges for the university's operations (also the final stage, which is not generally carried out by the university), which will be included in the analysis. The results of the theoretical analysis are referred to the results of the research concerning knowledge transfer practices among universities in Lodz. A total of thirty-five cases of knowledge transfer practices were included in the analysis. The analysis conducted in 2010 and 2011 covered types of practices, the initiative of carrying out practices, their duration, the nature of practices, their subject scope and impact as well as risks and benefits associated with implementing knowledge transfer practices. The preliminary exploration, interviews and innovation studies conducted indicate that the analysis covered a vast majority of such practices, which means that it is representative of the Lodz region.

Universities operate in a legal environment constituted by the external legal regulations, which – due to their universality – are not sufficient as they do not take into account the specific nature of schools. In order to make their activity coherent and well organised, universities create their own rules. The material used by the author to analyze the language of the university internal law acts are the statutes and regulations posted on the websites of the universities supervised by the minister responsible for higher education in Poland. Due to special nature of the analyzed material, its vocabulary is not very varied. A lot of space is occupied by elements typical for legal texts, such as function names or abbreviations used in the description of a legal act. The study included phenomena related to both word-formation and inflection, as well as orthography, i.e. the grammatical type and number of nouns, the tense of verbs, and the notation of certain forms characteristic of the university texts.

Opis:
While criticism of management and other authorities might sometimes count as virtuous, it is often taken as a disturbance of business operations. Some people even think that criticism reflects badly on managers, as it supposedly shows that they do not have sufficient control over their employees. As I see it, then, feedback or criticism is framed in a highly ambivalent way: Although criticism is often invited as an opportunity for improvement, it is mostly received as a cause of reputational damage. A straightforward illustration of this fact is the treatment of so-called whistle blowers who might be viewed either as martyrs exposing problems to be addressed or as traitors revealing failings or misconduct. Yet, given the moral and institutional stakes in improving a problematic situation, it is still surprising that a portrayal of criticism as a disturbance is so often successful. So how is it possible to obscure the obvious downsides of shunning criticism? Zooming in on the ambivalent values associated with criticism, I shall argue that administrative hierarchies and distributions of tasks often provide incentives to suppress criticism and, by extension, collective action rooted in criticism of authorities in academia.

Opis:
Background: First aid is a critical skill, and knowing how to perform it may ultimately save a person’s life. Aim of the study: The aim of the study was to assess the level of first aid knowledge among students from three backgrounds: medicine, science, and the humanities. Material and methods: The authors surveyed a group of 180 fifth-year physiotherapy, geoinformatics, and psychology students, of which there were 60 from each discipline. The authors used an anonymous survey of their own design, composed of open- and closed-ended questions, which included 15 questions about first aid rules. The research was conducted in Wrocław, Poland. Results: Only 60 students (30.33%) had previously had the opportunity to receive first aid training during the course of their studies. An additional 100 students (55.56%) claimed they were familiar with first aid rules. Of the physiotherapy students, 32 (53.3%) declared they would remain calm and composed in an emergency situation, with men claiming they would remain more composed than women. The difference in behaviour turned out to be statistically significant; the value of the chi-square test was 13.74. Students who had had prior first aid training at university were the most familiar with life-saving techniques and claimed they would remain the most composed in an emergency situation (32 students from physiotherapy; 53:3%). Prior to taking the first aid exam, the majority of students (100 respondents; 55.6% of the total) were confident that they would obtain the maximum number of points possible on the test. However, upon completion, they were found to have a medium level of knowledge at 889 points out of 1,500, or 59%. Conclusions: The level of first aid knowledge among university students should be dramatically improved, so they are able to perform first aid with some level of expertise, should the need ever arise. To facilitate this, every university should include first aid classes in their curriculum. First aid techniques should be revised and refreshed every six months.

Intellectual capital is treated as a tool for creating a new type of University. Its strategy should be based on competitiveness and shaping entrepreneurial attitudes among employees. Universities should be focused on continuous development, selfimprovement, modeling new methods of acquiring, using and updating knowledge. The application of the concept based on intellectual capital is to increase the chances for development based on modern principles and form the contemporary model of the University. The aim of the article is to describe the University as a knowledge-based organization and present selected tools used to shape the intellectual capital of these organizations.

For several years, social networking sites are growing in popularity in Poland. That is why, more and more organizations take action known as social media marketing. Just as business organizations, usually universities take actions on Facebook, the most popular social networking site, which is used by nearly 70% of Polish Internet users. The purpose of this article is to analyze and evaluate the activity of Polish universities and their students on Facebook, to compare the activity of public and private universities, and to identify activities that universities should take on this portal. The analysis is based on the author’s own research: exploration of university’s sites (fanpages) on Facebook (conducted from January 2012) and a survey carried out among the students of two Polish universities.

The article presents the introduction of online learning at universities in Poland, which was a solution aimed at preventing, countering and combating COVID-19. Attention was drawn to the perception of this change by the stakeholders, i.e. students. The analysis examines students’ concerns regarding the implementation of this form of learning in selected areas related to access to technology, the organization of classes, and the participation in them, social interactions and administrative activities. The aim of the research was also to ascertain students’ opinions on the consequences of the implemented change and on the actions aimed at facilitating the transition to online learning undertaken by the authorities and university employees. The research was conducted with the use of an electronic survey questionnaire. The responses of 189 full-time university students were analyzed. Based on the results of the research, communication between students and university authorities, as well as the involvement of participants in the process of change were considered as key elements in the implementation of online learning. Among the important activities there were those that enable participation in online learning (provision of equipment, programs, licenses) and those that support learning (access to library resources). As regards the latter, conclusions were formulated concerning the planning of teaching, i.e. the content and the way of transferring knowledge.

“Ilustrowana Republika”
Interwar Poland
Opis:
“Ilustrowana Republika” was a daily published in Łódź in 1925–1939. Apart from the news, it published economic, social, cultural, educational, and sports information as well as materials on tertiary education. The issue of higher education was raised in over 440 articles and notes, which included information on the Łódź and other Polish universities. Journalists wrote about activities which aimed at making Łódź a university city and about more important events from the life of Polish universities. Fewer publications focused on academic issues; however, a great part of articles showed individual and atypical student conduct sometimes hard to accept such as suicidal attempts, conflicts with the law, organising anti-Semitic manifestations by right-wing students for almost the entire Interwar period. This work does not provide a complete picture of tertiary education or the academic community before WWII as it presents only facts and events described in the newspaper. However, it may be useful as a basic source for more comprehensive works concerning higher education in the past.
